iii. pilot [1x1]
That same night, the three hunters returned to the bridge to analyze the place better. They looked over the edge of the bridge, looking for something in the dark water, to help them.
"So this is where Constance took the swan dive." said Dean.
"So, do you think dad would have been here?" Sam asked quietly to his brother.
"Well, he's chasing the same story, and we're chasing him," Dean replied to his brother, moving away from the edge of the bridge. Sam did the same with Nova right behind.
"Okay, so now what?" Sam demanded.
"Now we keep digging till we find him." Dean replied. "It may take a while."
"Dean, I said I have to be back by Monday—" Sam said calmly to his brother. Nova could feel the Winchesters were ready to start an argument.
"—Monday, the interview. Yeah, I forgot," Dean said. It was as if Nova could hear what was to follow before it even happened. "You're really serious about this, aren't you? You think you're just gonna become some lawyer, marry your girl?"
"Maybe, why not?" Sam fired back.
"Does Jessica know the truth about you? Does she know about the things you've done?" Dean asked abruptly to his brother.
Sam walked a little closer to her brother. "No, and she's never going to know."
"Well, that's healthy." Dean said sarcastically. "You can pretend all you want, Sammy. But sooner or later you're gonna have to face up to who you really are."
"Who is that?" Sam asked.
"One of us!" Dean answered, stopping.
"No! I'm not like you," Sam exclaimed, stopping in front of Dean. "This will not be my life."
Dean looked at his younger brother. "Well, you have a responsibility to ..."
Sam interrupted him. "To dad? And his crusade?" He shook his head. "If it weren't for pictures, I wouldn't even know what mom looks like. What difference would it make?" When Dean did not respond, Nova passed the brothers, but before she could say anything Sam started again. "Even if we do find the thing that killed her, Mom's gone and she's not coming back."
He had reached a delicate matter and knew it. Dean grabbed Sam by the collar and shoved him against one of the pilasters of the bridge. "Do not talk about her like that."
"Can you stop?" Nova demanded, the girl took a deep breath looking at the two before continuing. "I know it's hard, but we're the only people we have now. We need to be together." She said softly. "I mean, you still have one of your parents to find."
She moved away to continue her way but was interrupted when she saw a woman on the edge of the bridge, about to take the last dive of her life. The woman gave a look of sympathy to the hunters, before stepping forward, letting her body fall brutally. Nova did not wait for the boys and ran to the edge where the woman had been seconds ago.
"Where'd she go?" Dean said, looking over the edge.
"I don't know." Sam replied, who had come to Nova's side in disbelief at what she saw. A roar of the motor came crashing into the silence between them, following a ray of light that crossed the dark bridge.
"What the..." Dean said in surprise.
"Who's driving your car?" Sam asked nervously.
Dean pulled the keys out of his pocket and shook them. The three then blushed in the opposite direction of the Impala without looking back, they could see the reflected headlights behind them. The car is going too fast, if they didn't act fast they would get hit. The three of them looked at each other briefly, having the same idea. Synchronizing, the hunters then jumped over the edge. Sam and Nova managed to hold on to the metal bridge before they fell completely into the water below them. Sam looked at the brunette as if asking if she was okay, the girl consented before returning to the safe place above the bridge.
"Dean?" Nova exclaimed, searching for him in the dark water. "DEAN!"
"Hey, are you all right?" Sam asked his brother when he came safely to Nova's side.
"I'm super!" Dean fired, then made his way back to the bridge.
Nova sighed looking up at the taller Winchester beside her. "Are you alright?"
Sam looked at the girl and only nodded. A muffled Dean sound covered with mud, they made them look back. He was checking the car anxiously. "Yeah, we're okay," Nova said sarcastically, drawing Dean's attention to her. "Is Baby all right?" She completed, approaching the muddy hunter.
Dean leaned against the hood of the car, turning to his brother and the brunette, who were now in front of him. "Yeah, whatever she did to it, it seems all right now." An angry expression crossed his face. "That Constance chick. What a bitch!"
Sam found himself on the hood beside Dean. "Well, she does not want us digging around, that's for sure."
"So where's the trail go from here, genius?" Dean exclaimed, throwing his arms up in frustration, accidentally wiping mud from his hands on the girl.
"Oh c'mon" Nova grunted as she felt the mud.
Sam sniffed the air and grimaced at his brother. "You smell like a toilet." Dean glared at his younger brother.
"He's not wrong." Nova said, annoyed by the smell.
☾☼☽
Dean jumped to the nearest motel counter when the hunters decided to get a room for the weekend. "One room, please. ." He told the clerk, handing him the fake credit card.
The officer looked at the three suspected hunters, and Nova sent him a discreet nod. You guys having a reunion or something?"
"What do you mean?" Sam asked
"That other guy, Burt Aframian. He came in and bought a room for the whole month."
The three hunters exchanged a meaningful look. "Well, I think they've already taken our room, we come here looking for him." Nova said, rushing forward Dean to get the card back.
And with that, he turned and left the hotel reception. Dean and Sam ran after her, following the room where John was before.
Once they found the room, the brothers watched as the brunette bothered to open the lock. She pulled a pin from her hair and began to tug at the lock. With a click, the door opened. She looked at the boys with a smile on her face. "Welcome to my domain."
The three of them entered the room looking around, the walls were filled with photos, news clippings, personal information. John's things were thrown about the room, everything seemed like a mess.
"I don't think he's been here for a couple of days at least." Dean said, after checking for a burger he found in the dresser.
"Salt, cat-eye shells. He was worried, trying to keep something from coming." Sam said, close to John's salt line. Nova analyzing one of the walls with her back to the boys. "What do you got here?" Sam said, moving closer to the girl, followed by Dean.
"Centennial Highway Victims." Nova answered.
"I don't get it," Dean said. "I mean, different men, different jobs, ages, ethnicities. There's always a connection, right? What do these guys have in common?" While Dean wandered off, Nova noticed Sam walking away to another wall, and followed when he saw what he had found.
"Dad figured it out." Sam said, looking at the wall where John had put articles and information on the 'Woman in White.'
"What do you mean?" Asked Dean.
"Uh ... He found the same article we did." Nova said, looking back at Winchester. "Constance Welch, she's a woman in white."
"You sly dogs." Said Dean. "All right, so if we're dealing with a woman in white, dad would have found the corpse and destroyed it."
"She may have another weakness." Replied Sam.
"No, Dad would want to be sure." Dean said approaching his brother and the brunette next to him. "Does it say where she's buried?"
"No, not that I can tell." Said Nova.
"If I were dad, though, I'd go ask her husband, if he's still alive." Said Sam, pointing at the photo of her husband they had seen earlier.
"All right, why don't you see if you can find an address? I'm gonna get cleaned up." Dean said, pulling away from them.
"Hey, Dean, what I said earlier about mom and dad, I'm sorry." Said Sam. Nova gave a small smile, knowing exactly what Dean would say next. It was what he told her when she tried to apologize for something.
"No chick-flick moments." Dean said, his response made Nova let out a sarcastic laugh.
"All right, jerk." Sam replied.
"Bitch." Dean said for the last time, before leaving.
Nova rolled her eyes, happy to see the two of them understood.
☾☼☽
The next day, everything was calm. Sam was sitting on one of the beds, checking his voice mail. Dean was confused in the bathroom while Nova was on her laptop, looking for more information about Constance. "Hey, it's me, it's about ten-twenty on Saturday night." Jessica's voice came from Sam's voicemail. This got Nova's attention from the laptop.
As the girl turned her gaze to Sam's direction, she saw him smiling at himself, which made her want to smile too. Nora thought about how lucky he was to get Jessica. It had only been one day, but he already missed her.
"Well, I don't know about you, but I can not work empty-handed." The brunette said, rising from her seat.
Dean left the bathroom and retrieved his coat. "Me too," he said to both of them. "Let's get some food at that restaurant down the street." Said the girl directly, then turned to her brother. "Do you want anything?"
"No thanks," Sam said, shaking his head.
"Don't wait too long, Sammy." Nova said and sent Sam a smile.
Sam flashed a smile, remembering that this was what the girl used to tell him when she was hiding from Dean when they were younger. "Well, goodbye then, try not to get lost."
With that, Dean and Nova left the hotel room, Nova following in Dean's footsteps. "It's nice to have him again." She told Dean. "You know, like the good old days."
Dean laughed, glancing over his shoulder, and instantly he froze. There was a police car parked a little way away, and the clerk had been talking to the two officers since the day before. "Call Sam."
Nova looked confused at Dean, even turning in the same direction he was looking. And he swore in a low voice when he saw the officers. She took out her cell phone and dialed Sam's number quickly. "What?" Sam replied, looking confused. "Did you forget something?"
Looking over her shoulder again, Nova could see the clerk pointing at them, and now the officers were on their way. Nov looked at Dean, and returned to Sam saying "Dude, get out." Nova hissed.
"What about you?" Sam asked urgently.
"Uh ... they kind of saw us already. We can't escape anymore." Nova said in a lower tone as she saw the officers now coming toward her. "But you do, then you'll find John."
Dean nudged Nova to the side, and she hung up the phone. The officers were standing in front of them, looking annoyed. Dean shot them a dark look.
"Problem, officers?" Dean asked innocently.
"Where's your other partner." An officer asked abruptly.
"Partner, what other partner?" Dean said, figuring he did not know anything.
An officer nodded toward the motel room they had vacated. Another officer stepped out of the police car and started walking toward the motel room. Nova cast a discreet glance toward the bedroom, praying that Sam had already left. The officer turned to Dean and Nova. "So, fake US Marshals, fake credit cards, do you have anything real?"
Nova turned to Dean, who had not responded, as she thought he would, then let out the first thing that came to her mind. "My boobs." She said innocently with a forced smile.
"In fact, everything you see is natural." Dean said, grinning at the officer, causing Nova to mourn his opening words immediately.
Nova was pushed forward by one of the officers, she stumbled in front of a hood of the car. She turned her head to see an officer pulling on a pair of handcuffs. When she felt the cold metal close on her wrists, she heard Dean laughing. Then she heard Dean hit the hood of the car as well. She caught eye contact with Dean giving him a sarcastic smile, just to listen to the officer told them they had the right to remain silent.
☾☼☽
Dean and Nova were both sitting in an interrogation room, and she was burning with shame in her comment to the officer. It was not the best answer she ever gave, but kind of worked out, and she's fine with it. And she was burning with shame in her comment to the officer. She'd let it slip, and now she was certain Dean and Sam a tease forever. The stout officer on the bridge came in, carrying a cardboard box in his arms. The officer sat down in front of them and stared at them. "So, you want to tell us your real names?"
"I told you, it's Ted, Ted Nugent." Dean said coldly. "And she's Robin, cannot you understand that?"
Nova looked anxiously at the officer, with a fake smile. "No last names."
"I'm not sure if you realize how much trouble you're in." The officer said coolly. "And by the way, Ted and Robin, like on that TV show? ... do I look like I'm stupid?"
"I'd rather not answer the last question." Nova said.
"So anyway," Dean said. "We talkin', like, misdemeanor kind of trouble or, uh, squeal like pig trouble?"
"You have the faces of ten missing people taped to your wall." Said the officer abruptly.
"That'll be interesting." Nova grunted, then sighed.
"And a bunch of mumbo-jumbo satanic." The officer continued. "I know you're a worshiper, you have a damn pentagram on you."
"No, see it's actually a symbol of protection." Nova said, citing what Sam said earlier. "I don't know why everyone thinks it has to do with the devil."
"You two are officially suspects." Said the officer brutally.
"That makes sense." Dean said sarcastically. "Because when the first one disappeared in '82 I had three, and her two."
"I know you have partners, one of them is an older guy, maybe he's gotten the whole thing started, so tell me, Dean." He tossed a thin brown leather magazine on the table. "That is?" Dean and Nova both looked forward to a closer look. Nova had seen him so many times that he had already decorated the marks. This was John's diary. The sheriff began to leaf through it.
"I thought it might be your name ... Look, I flipped through it, with little I could understand ... I mean, it's nine kinds of crazy! But I found that too." He opened a page, which in John's familiar writing, Dean 35-111, was written from one side to the other. "Now you're going to stay right here until you tell me exactly what it means." He looked at Nova with a mocking smile. "I still want to know your name, dear."
"Well, it's definitely not dear." Nova answered back in the same tone the officer used.
Nova felt a mixture of emotions when she saw the numbers. It was a set of coordinates, clearly. John sometimes did this, leaving a sticky note in the motel refrigerator. He knew clearly that they were chasing him, but wanted them to go somewhere. The two hunters exchanged a glance, realizing this at the same time. Then Dean lifted his head, knowing he needed to come up with a good story.
The officer turned to them. "So?"
"It's an old locker combination." Dean lied
The officer raised his eyebrows, looking between them. "Really?"
Dean and Nov shrugged. "Yeah, why not?" Nova said.
"Something normal would be there?" He drove toward the newspaper "or something with the Satanic crap?"
"How do you know if it's satanic?" Nova asked, arranging her position in the chair, which is now more uncomfortable than normal.
"Are you confirming?" The officer asked a little confused and surprised.
"No, just asking." Nova said.
"I don't know how many times I have to tell you. It's my old combo of school lockers." Dean said innocently.
Nova sat back in her chair. "Let's do this all night?" A deputy stuck his head in the doorway and cleared his throat. Drawing the attention of the officer and the two hunters.
"We just got a 911, shots fired on Whiteford Road." He said urgently.
The officer got up immediately but looked at the two prisoners. "Do you need to go to the bathroom?" He asked.
"No," Dean said, giving him a strange look. He glanced sideways at Nova. His lips were wrinkled, when he saw the officer was looking, he gave a false smile.
"Great." The officer said dryly. He took out two pairs of handcuffs and handcuffed them on the table. Looking at the two of them, he left the room, the door clicking closed behind him.
"Well, you want to do the honors?" Dean asked the beautiful girl at his side. Nova nodded, reaching for a paper clip that was in John's journal, and quickly began twisting one end of the paperclip in the handcuff, moving it from all sides until it heard a click of the unlock. She took the cuffs off the wrist, doing the same with Dean.
He moved to the side of the door, spying on the rest of the police station to see the cops running frantically. Nova grabbed the newspaper, which was on the table, before she could join Dean at the door, the same prevented her "Out of the window!" She ran to the window and opened it. The two went up and down a nearby post. They stopped at the end, and quickly, still completely looked around, making sure none of the officers were watching, so they ran away.
Dean then spotted a phone booth and made his way there. "Come on!" He came in and Nova followed, Dean ran his hand through his pockets for a change, when he found none, looked at the brunette expectantly. Nova rolled her eyes and slipped the change from her pockets into the slot, and dialed a number, which Nova recognized as Sam's. Dean grabbed the phone in her ear, and the girl pressed her phone aside for Dean, so she could hear.
"Fake 911 phone call? Sammy, I don't know, this is very illegal," Dean said on the phone.
"I bet law school would not be very happy with you if they knew that," Nova added.
"You're welcome." Nova could see the smile on Sam's face could be heard through the pay phone.
"Listen, we have to talk," Dean said to his brother.
"Tell me about it," he agreed. "So her husband was unfaithful, we're dealing with a woman in white and she's buried behind her old house, so that should have been Dad's next stop."
"Sammy, do you shut up for a second?"
"I just can not understand why the father didn't destroy the corpse yet."
"Well, that's why I'm trying to tell you." Dean explained, "He's gone. Dad left Jericho."
"How do you know?"
"We have the journal." Nova took the phone from Dean to tell Sam.
"He's not going anywhere without this thing." Said Sam.
"Yeah, well, he did it this time." Nova said, Dean did as she had done with him, approached the phone to hear what his brother was saying.
"What they say?"
"Ah, the same old ex-sailor, when he wants to tell us where he's going."
"Coordinates" Sam understood. "Where?"
"We're not sure yet."
"I don't understand, I mean, what could be so important that Dad would just jump in the middle of a job? What the hell is going on?" Then over the phone, Dean and Nova heard a muffled crash, the two of them looked at each other without knowing what had happened. Moments later, all they heard was silence, Nova opened her mouth to call Sam, until the next words shut the girl, from a woman's voice. 'Take me home.'
The two then ran away from the telephone booth, and into a back parking lot. Dean chose a car, which he knew would be easy to break. Nova was now at the side of the car, every two seconds, checking to see if there was any sign of humanity that would catch them in their illicit acts. The car roared for life and Nova immediately felt relieved to wash over it. She ran to the passenger side of the car, and Dean left before she could close the door. Accelerating the roads, Dean traversed almost every stop light and signal that he could without creating a collision, knowing that getting into a car accident would not help any of them.
Within a record time, Dean stopped at the address Sam found the night before. As soon as the stolen car stopped completely, Nova jumped out of the car, just like Dean. They approached the Chevy Impala that was in front of a slaughtered house, with its guns. Each of them took a side and began firing, breaking the windows into pieces. Making sure not to hit the only living person in that car.
Sam regained his senses and sat down to drive the car. "I'm taking you home!" He shouted firmly. Sam drove forward, not noticing Dean and Nova. He crushed the foundation of the broken house, wood and dust obscuring his vision. Sam closed his eyes to the impact and felt a small knock in front of him. He opened his eyes to hear the wood and the remains being pulled. It was Dean and Nova, fighting through the rubble to get to him.
"Sam, Sammy, are you okay?" Nova was in her line of sight now, her eyes wide with concern.
"I think ..." Sam stopped.
"Can you move?" Dean asked.
"Yes." Sam groaned. "Help me?"
Dean and Nova both helped Sam out and held him as he shook himself a little from the daze of the situation. The three of them were standing in the car beside the Impala, Nova was still attached to Sam by the arms. Dean closed the car door behind him, and Constance's head popped. She looked at them in disgust and threw a photograph she was holding. Her anger made one of the dressers fly to the three of them, the comoda made its impact on them. Pressed against a wall, the three hunters grunted as they tried to break free.
The lights began to flash and Constance looked around. Even she looked frightened. The water started down the stairs in torrents, licking puddles at the bottom of the stairs. Constance moved cautiously to the foot of the stairs. Two shadowy figures were at the top of the stairs, holding hands. It was a boy and a girl, not more than six years old. They were Constance's children. The ones she'd killed.
"You came home to us, Mama," the chorus, their voices sharp and sinister. Constance's face was disturbed, and she began to walk back. She knew they knew what she had done. Guilt began to bother her. She did not want to kill them. Before she could move, the children had shined on her side and began to hug her. They hugged her tightly, and Constance screamed as the three spirits melted into a puddle on the floor, disappearing forever.
Dean looked at his brother, and then each of them shoved the table. He fell to the floor, freeing them from the grip. Advancing toward where the ghosts disappeared, where there was a small puddle, Dean said, "So, this is where she drowned her children."
Sam nodded. "She could not go home because of this. She could not bare to face them."
"You've found her weakness." Nova said proudly.
"Nice work, Sammy." He played jokingly where Sam had been injured, and Sam laughed in pain.
"I wish I could say the same for you both!" Sam laughed. "What were you thinking, throwing Casper in the face, your freaks?"
"Hey, we saved your ass, did not we?" Nova said. "Do not be arrogant."
"I'll tell you something else." Dean said, spinning around the Impala as he examined each tiny piece of it. "If you screwed up my car ... I'll kill you."
☾ ☼☽
Sunday night. Hours before Sam had his interview. The Impala was knocking down a darkened road, the three occupants of the car in good spirits. With AC / DC playing, Nova felt as if she was sucked into the good 'ole days. She was sitting comfortably in the backseat as Sam examined the coordinates left for them. "Okay, so I found where Dad was." He announced.
"It's called Blackwater Ridge in Colorado."
"It looks lovely." Said the girl leaning against the bench in front of her. "where?"
"About six hundred miles," he replied.
"Hey, if we shag ass, we could do it in the morning." Dean said. Sam looked at him. "Dean, I ..."
Dean looked at the road and his brother. "You are not going?"
"The interview at about ten o'clock. I have to be there." Sam insisted.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever." Dean grunted in response. Sam turned his gaze to the backseat, to his best friend. He could see her eyes glittering with tears, and a chunk of emotion came to her throat. She flashed a forced smile at Dean, who rolled his eyes, and reluctantly said, "I'll take you home."
Within an hour, they were back at the Stanford campus. This time, however, Dean parked in front of Sam's building, not behind.
Sam came out with his purse, then leaned out the window and smiled at Dean and Nova encouragingly. "Call me if you find him, right?" Dean nodded. "And maybe I'll meet you later?"
Nova smiled. "Sounds like a plan."
The girl then got out of the car, just to get into the front seat next to Dean. Sam knocked twice on the car door and started to walk away. Dean leaned toward the passenger door and cleared his throat. "Sam?"
Sam turned around. "Yes?"
"You know, we, the three of us, made a hell of a team back there."
Sam smiled softly. "Yeah, we did."
Nova looked one last time at her best friend and hesitated when she said it. "Bye Sam." Dean looked back at Sam, before starting and leaving Sam alone in the darkness. Nova watched Sam as best she could until he was out of sight. She looked back at the source, suddenly feeling anxious. She did not know what it was, and it frightened her, she'd had that feeling before.
"Nova?" Dean said sharply. "Nova, are you okay?" He asked, his voice filled with concern.
"I have a really bad feeling." The girl said with a sigh.
"What kind of bad feeling?" Dean carried a worried expression.
"I don't know, I just do, and I hate it," she told him. "Maybe we should stay, just for the night."
He made a fast and balance between legal and illegal U-turn, and sped back to the direction of the apartment building. Dean had seen Nova go through this before, whatever she felt, he was always looking for a solution. When they stopped outside the building, it was on fire. The smoke rose from the roof and the flames licked the doors. The neighbors were around looked worried, and one was on the phone to the fire department.
The two hunters ran out of the car and up the stairs, Dean leading to the door of Sam's building. His hand was on the door handle when he heard his brother's screams. Without thinking, Dean kicked the door, before running into the room as Sam's screams were coming. Dean looked at Nova. "You're not coming in. I promised your father I'd keep you safe."
"Well, I'm not losing Sam and you. If we're going to die, we're going to die together, you idiot." Nova said, still recovering from the near panic attack she suffered.
"Sam!" Dean screamed as he raced past Nova to the burning room.
The two found Sam in bed, staring at the ceiling as the hot flames dominated the room, claiming the life of a blonde girl. He shielded her face as parts of the room began to fall. "No, no!"
Dean pulled Sam out of bed and tried to get Sam out of the room while his brother fought him. He looked at Nova, who had been in shock until then. When Nova heard Dean call her, she came back to realization, and then she pushed Sam, helping Dean get him out of there. She knew how terrible it was to see a loved one die, she saw her parents being taken away, and she did not want to see the three of them being swallowed by the flames as well. On the way down, Nova saw a fire alarm and pulled it. She wanted to make sure everyone was off the property. Sam kept pushing against Dean when they got outside.
"Let me save her!" Sam screamed.
"She's gone, Sam!" Said his brother. Sam screamed again as Dean released him. He dropped to his knees and began to cry. Nova slid down to the side beside him, wrapping her arms around the boy, Sam leaned closer to her, letting Nova comfort him. The girl cast a nervous look at Dean, who shared a look similar to hers, and in a way, it was comforting to her.
☾☼☽
Dean was as close as the cops allowed, watching the fire department work. Beside him was Nov, who was looking at the burning building.
She looked back at Sam who was standing beside the Impala, digging through the trunk, and carrying a shotgun. He had grown serious, keeping all his emotions behind a mask of rage. She approached, and offered a weak smile, and said softly, "Hey," but he did not respond. Dean soon approached and looked at Nova, who gave her a sideways smile. They both looked at Sam when they heard a clunk of him throwing his shotgun into the trunk. Firmly, he stated, almost simply:
"We have work to do."
