Chapter 3 - Stupid Smile

Hi friends! I'm back! Please enjoy and vote :) Also, I have no clue where I found this Kellic fan art but it's been saved in my phone for FOREVER and it's just perfect. I had to share it with y'all!

Vic's POV

I was laying in the grass underneath the bleachers, the smoke from my joint twirling upwards against the bright blue sky.

It was the last period of the day, Gym, and I was having a celebratory smoke with my three new friends, Jaime, Jack, and Tony.

Keeping the joint secured between my pointer and middle finger, I passed it to Tony who took a small drag.

My eyes squinted as the warm afternoon sun shone across the football field, casting a golden hue against everyone's skin.

I sat up and pushed myself back a bit until my shoulders leaned against one of the metal bars that held up the bleachers.

Since it was the first day of the new school year, most of my classes were spent going over the syllabus for each subject. It was extremely mundane.

But our Gym teacher was even more lazy than that. He didn't try to stretch out the syllabus reading at all. He finished in five minutes and then told us to either do laps around the track or mess around with the different sports equipment on the football field.

So naturally, myself and the guys snuck off to the bleachers to smoke. It would have been the perfect end to the day if Mr. Way didn't make us get changed into our awful gym uniform.

At my old school we could wear whatever clothes we wanted for gym as long as we didn't wear jeans. But at Salem High, our uniforms were all waiting for us in boxes when we entered the locker room.

There were eight boxes total. Four for the tops and four for the bottoms. We had a choice between small, medium, large, or extra large.

I fished around the boxes and pulled out what I thought would be the closest to my size. I pulled on the bottoms which were heather grey sweatpants, cinching the drawstrings to tighten them around my small waist.

The top right now, for the fall semester was a heavy crewneck sweatshirt. It was the same color as the sweatpants but had "Salem High" embroidered across the chest in a deep scarlet shade.

I had taken one look at myself in the mirror and grimaced. I needed to add a little...flare to this outfit. If I was going to be wearing it for almost an hour every day, I couldn't fit in.

So, before I followed the rest of the class outside, I ducked into the teacher's office and grabbed a pair of scissors.

I had hacked off a good few inches from the bottom so that the hem hit just above my belly button. Very 80's. And hey, I was all about retro.

Plus, I couldn't lie that I had a decent body, including small indentations of abs. Sue me for wanting to look good.

When I had came outside, I quickly gathered the attention of the entire class. A few bonehead jocks snickered, some of the girls gasped, and my crew were quick to give me thumbs up, Jack even whistled which I graciously bowed for.

Mr. Way simply sighed and asked me why I felt the need to "adjust" my uniform.

To which I replied, "This is the way we dressed for gym in California."

That got a few laughs from the group and landed me the nickname "Mr. Cali from Mr. Way. Which I was happy to go along with.

I was enjoying the warmth against my closed eyelids when an object smacked me in the shoulder. I jolted up, eyes narrowing in the direction of my assailant.

Quinn.

He was throwing the football around with a couple other meatheads on the team. That was when I noticed another guy picking himself up off the grass and dusting the dirt from his sweats. He must've missed Kellin's pass.

I quickly grabbed the football from the ground and held it against my chest.

Kellin jogged over to where I was sitting and waved at me. Tony, Jaime, and Jack were quick to straighten up, eyes wide and mischievous smiles plastered on their face.

"Hey! New kid. Ball." Kellin said all out of breath as he came to a stop in front of me.

They knew about my slight infatuation with Kellin Quinn and I'm sure they were eager to see where I'd go with this interaction.

"Mmm, nope I'm good." I answered, tossing the ball up and catching it in my hands.

Kellin's eyebrows furrowed as he crossed his arms.

"What?"

I stood up to face him, tucking the football underneath my arm. I took note of how I stood just an inch or two taller than him. He must have a damn good arm to be the "star" Quarterback at that height.

"I think my friends and I will keep the ball. I mean, it didn't almost break my face. And that would've been just tragic." I answered him again, pretending to be uninterested.

He thought he was being sneaky, but I saw him do a double take at my bare torso. His eyes quickly flicked back to mine.

"Just give me the fucking ball back." Kellin glared, grunting, what could only be an attempt to make his voice seem deeper.

I couldn't admit it was adorable. I also couldn't help admitting just how fun it was to mess with him. It was clear that his buttons were easy to press. He got so pissed so easily.

"Ooh big scary boy words. How about this? I bet that I can catch a touch down pass over you." I wagered, smirking at the fuming raven haired boy in front of me.

Kellin shook his head, "I'm THE Quarterback, not a running back."

I shrugged and started walking towards the center of the field.

"Yeah and a star quarterback like you, should still be much faster than a stoner like me. I never took you for one to back down from a dare."

"Are we literally 10 years old?" Kellin rolled his eyes but reluctantly followed me.

I tossed the ball to one of football players and stood on the white line marked onto the grass.

"Hey stretch, throw this ball for me will ya?"

Kellin grunted and grabbed the ball from his friends grasp. He tossed it to a less stocky guy that was standing nearby.

"Gabe, can you throw this into the center of the end zone?"

I shot Kellin a look as he stood beside me.

"At least let our back up quarterback throw the ball. Make this ridiculous charade somewhat legit."

"Okay, we both stand at one end of the 50 yard line...that's this big line in the center of the field. A football field is 100 yards long and since this is in the middle -"

"Oh gee, thank you star quarterback Kellin Quinn for that abundance of useful knowledge. How would I ever know what half of one hundred meant if it wasn't for you?" I deadpanned.

Kellin rolled his eyes, "You're fucking annoying has anyone ever told you that?"

"Please. Your life has been nothing but predictable before I moved here." I teased. I couldn't help it. His "angry" face was just too cute.

"You don't know anything about me. Gabe! Throw the goddamn ball." Kellin fired back.

I watched Gabe over my shoulder as he pulled the football back and counted down.

"Ready...set...GO!"

I took off, my feet moving quickly across the field as I ran towards the end zone. I was fast. I had always been fast. My dad put myself and Mike in the soccer league when I was only four years old.

I was exceptionally good. My dad couldn't have been more proud of me. That was until ninth grade when my interests changed and I quit the team.

He never outwardly told me just how devastated he was, but I knew. I could see it in his face everyday. He quickly turned his attention to Mike and his soccer career.

It hurt my feelings at first but I knew he didn't mean anything malicious by it. My dad was never good at expressing emotion.

Plus, my mom and I had a closer relationship anyways so his disappoint didn't hurt too bad.

The end zone was nearing quickly and I was surprised at how well Kellin was keeping up with me.

I was definitely much faster than him, I had at least four strides on him. But he was gaining on me. I was impressed.

I pivoted on my heel and jumped up to catch the incoming football. Kellin reached me and matched my jump, blocking my view as he leaped in front of me.

Because of my speed I had more time to get a better positioning. And because of my height I had a better reach. But Kellin had the experience.

He expertly turned in air to block my arms, catching the football with ease.

Gravity quickly got the better of us as we both came tumbling down, falling onto the grass together.

Because Kellin had jumped up in front of me, he fell on top of me.

Both of my arms subconsciously reacted and wrapped around Kellin's waist, holding him as we fell.

I didn't mean to grab him. It was a natural reaction. An instinct. When you fall, you try to break that fall.

My back hit the hard ground with a thud. Kellin's hand was pressed onto my bare abs, my sweatshirt riding up quite a bit.

Silence.

Silence filled the air around us as we looked at one another curiously. Kellin's eyes went to his hand on my stomach, and then my hands that were securely on his hips.

I noticed a tiny, minuscule smile flash across his lips before his eyes turned into a glare as he realized where he was.

His demeanor immediately changed as he shoved me back.

"Dude, what the fuck. Get your hands off me."

I pulled my arms back and held them up in surrender.

"Relax. You crashed into me. It was a natural reaction to not want someone to fall and hurt themselves. I just saved you from probably breaking your arm. Can't have a the star quarterback without his arm." I replied, trying to lighten the mood.

It didn't work.

Kellin stood up and grabbed the football, he faced me but his eyes were everywhere but on mine.

"I would've rather broken my arm. Leave. me. the. fuck. alone." He spat and stormed off towards his friends.

The bell rung out across campus, signaling the end of the day. My friends came running over towards me, helping me up off the ground.

"Damn Vic, you're fast! You're like lightening fast!" Tony exclaimed.

"Yeah you totally would've had him!" Jaime chimed in.

"That was HOT!" Jack grinned.

All three of us turned towards Jack with wide eyes. Jaime and Tony bursted out laughing. I rolled my eyes. I probably would've agreed if it wasn't for Kellin's reaction.

"Shut up." I forced a smile and pushed Jack playfully. We all fell into step towards the locker room to get our bags.

I couldn't help my face fall into a frown as I thought back to Kellin. What he said wasn't all that bad. He didn't outright call me a...you know. But it was almost worse. It looked like he wanted to. He would've preferred breaking his arm than have me touch him.

There was a second where I thought something different would have happened. That smile on his lips, that warmth in his eyes. His normal icy blue eyes were almost a golden green when he looked down at me.

I hated rejection. I fucking hated it. I've put up this front that I'm a confident person, but deep inside it's far from the truth.

The second those words fell so bitterly from Kellin's lips, I retreated further into myself. All of my insecurities came rushing to the surface.

I only came out as bisexual to my family and friends back home two years ago. In that time, I've fooled around with a few guys, but the nature of the experiences were usually always a secret.

Clearly I was in over my head when it came to being my true self and expressing my interest in guys.

I watched Kellin as he walked off with a few of the cheerleaders. Each and every one of them hanging off his every word like puppy dogs.

Ugh. I hate this feeling. I hate feeling unsure of myself.

Fine. From this moment on I will do everything in my power to try and forget about Kellin fucking Quinn.

//////

It was after school. I was up in my room messing around with a new song on my guitar when the doorbell rang.

"Vic! Can you get the door? My hands are in the middle of mixing a muffin batter!" I heard my mom yell from the kitchen.

Sighing, I placed my guitar gently on my bed and padded down the stairs. I hopped over the last step, landing on the brand new plush welcome mat mom had bought.

I grabbed the golden ornate door knob and whipped open the heavy wooden front door.

My face fell and I rolled my eyes when I saw who it was.

Kellin.

Well there goes my attempt at forgetting all about him.

Kellin's jaw was practically on the floor.

"You're our new neighbor?" He questioned.

I didn't even notice the woman standing behind him. She was incredibly striking. She had long, sleek black hair just like Kellin's. It was parted down the middle and fell across her shoulders. She was wearing a deep maroon velvet suit and black shoes whose heels were so tall and sharp I was sure they'd break skin.

Her face was warm and friendly, creating a stark contrast against her extremely strong and powerful body language.

She smiled and looked down at Kellin then back at me.

"You two already know each other?" She asked, her question directed at the both of us.

"You could say that." Kellin mumbled.

"We have a few classes together. Hi, I'm Vic Fuentes." I smiled.

"Hi Vic, it's wonderful to meet you! I'm Mrs.Quinn, I'm Kellin's mother and mayor of Salem. I wanted to come over and formally welcome you to our town, and to the neighborhood of course!" Mrs. Quinn replied.

I heard the sound of my mom's footsteps as she came beside me.

"Vic, who was at the door? Oh! Hello, I'm Vivian Fuentes." My mom greeted Kellin and his mother.

"Uh mom, this is Kellin and his mother. Kellin is in a few of my classes in school and his mother is the mayor. They live behind us." I caught my mom up to speed with the two people standing in our door way.

"Oh my goodness this is wonderful! Now, you two come in, come in. Let me make you some coffee." My mom smiled brightly and welcomed them into our house.

"Vivian thank you. Your home is beautiful. Oh and we brought you and your family some of our famous cookies." Mrs. Quinn beamed and followed after my mom into the kitchen.

Kellin and I were left standing awkwardly in the foyer. He abruptly pushed a wrapped box into my arms which I assumed contained the cookies.

"How did you know already that I lived behind you?" He asked, his blue eyes finally meeting mine.

"Huh? I have no clue what you're talking about." I muttered, suddenly realizing the mistake in my words.

"Don't play dumb. You told your mom that we lived behind you." Kellin pushed. Although there was no malice in his voice. He was genuinely curious.

I felt my cheeks blush slightly, my hand going to the back of my neck as I scratched at it.

"On my first night here, I was exploring my backyard and came across this little stream with a bridge over it. It was back at the edge of the property. I was smoking a joint when I saw you through the trees. You were standing at the edge of your yard, smoking a cigarette." I shrugged.

"You watching me?" Kellin smiled cheekily.

I rolled my eyes, "God! No. What is it with you straight guys? You think that just because someone is bisexual that they're interested in every guy on the planet."

I don't even know why I bursted out like that. I was clearly still not over this afternoon.

"Whoa hey, chill. I was just playing around. I um...I didn't know you were...what does that even mean?" Kellin asked quietly.

My eyes snapped over to him.

"Bisexual? Uh it means you like girls and guys. I like guys more than girls, though. It's different for every person." I explained.

I watched Kellin's face. It was like I could see the gears turning in his mind, connecting the dots and making sense of what I just told him.

"Vic, I -" He started but was interrupted when our mom's appeared in the doorway.

"Now Vivian, you and your family must come over soon for dinner. Oh and Vic, you have to come to Kellin's Halloween party this Saturday." Mrs. Quinn's voice pulled both of our attention off one another.

"Uh Halloween party?" I asked.

Mrs. Quinn looked at her son and motioned towards me with her eyes.

Kellin cleared his throat abruptly and started rambling, "Oh yeah. I throw it every year. The entire school is invited."

My mom shot me a look when I didn't answer him.

"Cool. Yeah, I'll uh, I'll see. Thank you."

Mrs. Quinn clapped her hands together and started walking towards the front door.

"Wonderful! And Vivian, please call me anytime. Our book club would love to have you. This Thursday evening?"

My mom nodded, "I wouldn't miss it. Thanks again Charlotte, we can't wait to dig into your lovely cookies too.

Kellin and his mother left the house, my mom closing the door behind them. She spun around, leaning against the door with a huge grin on her face.

"He's a cutie."

I groaned and immediately took off up the stairs.

"Vic, I may be old, and I may be your mother, but I'm not blind. I saw that look in your eyes before me and Mrs.Quinn interrupted." She called up at me from the bottom stair.

"MOM! PLEASE STOP!" I pleaded, storming off to my room and shutting the door behind me.

But I couldn't wipe this stupid smile off my face.
