SIX

THE BODY: PART ONE!

Dustin was quiet as he walked into the Henderson residence, his head hanging low. The curly haired boy hadn't even spared his older sister a glance as he made his way through the house and to his bedroom.

June couldn't remember a time where her brother had ever been quiet. In his entire life. Hell, she remembered him as coming out the womb with a shit ton to say.

She listened to to door slam behind him with furrowed brows, that familiar gut feeling returning.

Slowly she stood up from her spot on the couch, rolling her eyes as Mews cried from her shift in focus. The cat was spoiled as hell thanks to her mom.

June knocked quietly on Dustin's door, calling out to the boy in a gentle voice. She could be nice when she wanted to.

When there was no answer she opened the door a  crack, peaking her head through. The only light came through a streetlight that stood directly outside of Dustin's window. The boy laid on his bed fully clothed, head buried in his pillow.

"Go away." Dustin grumbled, not bothering to lift his head and look at June.

June hummed quietly, closing Dustin's bedroom door behind her as she walked in further. She took a seat on the edge of his twin sized bed, placing a comforting hand on his arm. "You can talk to me, you know?"

Dustin peaked over his arm at the girl who wore a gentle smile. He couldn't help but to let a few tears leak from the corner of his eyes.

"They found Will," Dustin croaked out, more tears falling, "—at the quarry."

June's heart dropped to the pit of stomach, her own eyes filling with tears. Will and her brother had been friends for longer then June could remember.

She didn't know the boy too well, but it was obvious that he was a good kid. Probably the kindest out of all of her brother's friends.

"I'm so sorry," she frowned, blinking away the tears that had blurred her vision, "—I can't imagine what his mom is going through right now."

"It's such bullshit!" Dustin groaned, burying his head further into his pillow.

The two sat there until their mom came home from work, silent tears sliding down their faces.

They mourned Will Byers— the boy they had known since Dustin was six. And June mourned the ignorant blanket of peace that had sat over Hawkins for as long as she could remember.

Because if there was one thing she knew— it was that nothing in the small town would ever be the same again.
