Chapter 9
Dana swallowed the lump forming in her throat as her narrowed eyes skimmed the screen before her. She hadn't expected this, no, she hadn't expected things to go this far at all.
Dana had thought for certain she was in the clear, but now, days later, the Investigation Bureau was calling her in for DNA testing?
Perhaps she had made a mistake... she cared too little to cover up her crime in its entirety. Now the police were using her mistakes to trace her down. She knew they weren't on to her yet, but they were getting dangerously close. If she allowed them to get even one step further she knew that she'd no longer be safe.
Her serene and nonchalant exterior was breaking, beginning to reveal the trembling creature inside. With shaky hands, Dana slowly stood and began retrieving items from around the room. There was no way she could stay here now. Frantically throwing random objects into expensive suitcases, Dana made up her mind to run from her problems rather than face them head on. To the world, of course, she was an image, but inwardly there had always been a coward, coming to light now in the midst of panic.
Dana called her butler to her room via the intercom and he arrived promptly afterward.
"Miss Lorington, how may I be of service?" The stout man asked as he stood directly outside her door.
"Thank goodness you're here Herman. Something has come up and I'm afraid a rather spontaneous... erm... vacation seems my best course of action. Ill need you to look after the manor in my absence of course, keep it looking spiffy for my return. Oh, and Herman, I will require a vehicle for my transportation needs. "
The man's handsome black suit extended for a moment as he bowed dramatically low. "Of course, Madame Lorington. Shall I have your chauffeur drive it up to the front entrance for you?
"Oh actually Herman I won't be needing a chauffeur. I daresay this whole idea is really just a way for me to escape the cameras and find some privacy. You won't tell anyone anything?
"Not a thing"
"I knew I could count on you, now do hurry." Dana pasted on a smile to cover her nerves.
With another bow, the man was gone from sight, and Dana took up her thoughtless packing once more. Packing for what? She did not know. For how long? That she didn't know either. Without thinking, she simply tossed useless things, silly things, that in truth she didn't need at all, into her name brand bags. Then, looking iconic as ever, but feeling helpless, she drove away to somewhere, she would not know where for quite some time yet.
