Chapter 4

"How long ago did Mr. Armaer leave the building?" Questioned a short man with pudgy red cheeks and a wrinkled nose. "I had some important business to discuss with him."
The doorman, who had been assigned to keep track of all the party guests entering and exiting the building simply shrugged with a blank expression.
"From what I can tell, he has yet to make his exit, sir." Replied the man with a thick accent.
"You mean to say you did not see him leave?"
"Sorry, uh, no sir."
"This is preposterous!" Shouted the agitated man, flinging his arms in the air "And after I worked so hard to promise such a beneficial contract to the both of us!"
"He is still in the building, sir. Maybe he is using the washrooms, admiring the new wallpaper."
"Well, whatever would he be standing around admiring wallpaper for? Search the place. He promised to keep up his end of the bargain and I expect no less!" Grumbled the man  before he stormed off angrily.
The poor doorman just sighed and radioed head security.
"Have you seen a Mr. Armaer around, lately?" He asked, expecting to be told he was still in the building and there was nothing to worry about.
"Uh, no I haven't." came the staticy  reply "I'll be sure to keep my eyes open though. I saw him earlier tonight. Thanks for letting me know."
"Yeah, no problem!"
Wesley Morris, head guard of security,  was already scanning the crowd around him for William Armaer as soon as he heard that he was supposedly missing from the party.
' But why?' He thought 'Parties such as these usually went late into the evening, and William was always one of the last to leave, as he often had important business deals to negotiate.
Wesley Morris had a bad feeling about this. There was something he didn't trust, so even though there was no valid reason for concern as of yet, he decided to investigate.
"I need coverage on the first floor, main ballroom. I have something I need to do. It'll only take a minute." He radioed to the other guards.
"We got ya covered, Morris. Go ahead."
And that was all it took before Wesley was off to find one of his closest friends. Yes, something was definitely not right, which meant he had to hurry.

Wesley gasped as he pushed open the wide doors of the upstairs study. There, in the center of an array of shattered glass, lay William Armaer. The officer could only hope he was not... no... he couldn't be.
After a moment of brief shock, Wesley rushed over towards the body and knelt down beside it, already checking for a pulse. As he held his fingers against William's wrist, he knew there was no reason for hope, but he kept willing himself to hope anyway, almost as if he could wish the man back to life. William had been like a father to him. It wasn't long before the officer was left with no choice but to accept the scenario. There was no heartbeat either.
"No blood, no bruises, no bulletwounds, only a body and a broken glass." Sighed the officer.
He bent his head low and cried into the victim's ear.
"William, my dear friend... I was on duty, now your death... it is on  my hands. I'm sorry. " his voice broke off in a stifled sob.
Shakily, Morris reached for his radio. His hands trembled even as he pressed the button. He mustered up some small amount of strength and controlled himself momentarily. Officers didn't cry.
"I'm gonna need all teams in the main study." He stated matter of factly "There's been a murder."
