Chapter 2
Slowly, Dana inched towards the refreshments table. She poured some wine into two cups and then walked over to where William was standing, talking to another man in a fancy suit and quirky bowtie.
"Can I talk to you for just a minute, Will?" She looked at him imploringly, knowing he couldn't resist when she gave him that look.
"Excuse me." Will briefly stated to his companion. Then he stepped away and focused all his attention on Dana. "What is it that you need?"
Dana handed him a glass of wine then pulled him towards the doorway. "Can we talk in the study?" She paused " In private?"
"Of course" replied Will, and followed her beyond the intricately carved doors and into the wide hallway. When they had made their way up the elegant stairway and into the quiet study, Dana sat down gracefully on the plush, velvet couch. She patted the seat next to her.
"Take a seat." She said.
Will hesitated, then moved toward her and sat down where she had motioned.
"What is the matter, my dear?" He asked earnestly " It must have been important for you to bring me up here."
"What I'm about to say will come as quite a shock to you, I am sure." Sighed Dana.
By this time, poor William had grown quite anxiously curious, and was dying to hear the next words out of Dana's red-lipped mouth.
"Yes? What is it? You can tell me anything." He pleaded.
Dana sat for a short moment, afraid of the words she would soon speak. Then, simply and coolly, she stated: "You have a son, Will."
"What?"
"You and I, we have a son, and his name is Davison."
"Well, I, I don't know q, quite what to say." Stammered a now flustered William.
"There's no need to say much. He's simply another being living among us. Of course, I had to hide him away from the world so as not to expose anything scandalous."
"How can you say that about your own son? Our son? Oh, I must find him and get to know him. I've missed so much with him! I must make up for it all. Oh, I'm such a terrible father. Why did you not tell me? You had so many opportunities. At the balls, the parties, when I was in the hospital, when you first found out... all of these times you chose to keep something so significant a secret?"
"I had no other choice. Surely your small, childish mind can at last somewhat comprehend that."
"Its so unfair. To me, to him, to you, to all of us."
Dana simply turned away. She grabbed his wine glass at the other end of the room, and, while he was distractedly pacing the floor, she slid a small tablet into her hand from out of her purse, took it out of its packaging, and dropped it silently into his drink. Wordlessly, she came back across the room and handed his drink to him.
"Its the least I can do to help you recover from such shocking news. I knew you might need it to distract yourself." She cooed innocently.
"Thank you." William accepted the drink and immediately began to guzzle the contents of the glass.
