Chapter 6. My name?

-Keegan-

The next morning Keegan woke up to the sound of the door to his parents' bedroom opening. It creaked loudly as his mother came out with her arms stretched up over her head. She yawned out a 'good morning' before stepping out of the house to go and fetch the usual freshly baked bread and milk they always had for breakfast.

Keegan studied the ceiling for about five seconds, wondering if yesterday had truly happened. Did he really let Orla talk him into bringing a naked stranger into their home?

"Yes. Yes, you did, because you are thick as shit." He groaned and sat up. He groaned once more in frustration while rubbing his hands against his face. "Why... why was I the one who had to sleep out here?"

When he lowered his hands and opened his eyes, he saw that the door to his room was open. The girl stood in the door frame with eyes which revealed that she had been up for a while. Only a hint of sleepiness lingered in the blue eyes. Keegan was all of a sudden much more alert. He moistened his lips, prepared to say something but nothing came out.

The girl had either slept in his mother's clothes, or she had done a very bad job getting dressed this morning. The shirt hung loosely around her shoulders, on her right side it even hung down so much that her right shoulder and a big part of her upper arm was visible. It only left her breast to one's imagination... Even though he had already seen them both. Keegan blinked and pretended like he hadn't just noticed how much skin she was showing... Not to mention how badly she had tied her skirt... The only way to describe it was poorly, and when she turned slowly to see if someone else was awake Keegan held his breath.

What was presented in front of him was a vision that tormented him in the sweetest kind of way, just like how the shirt hung of her. The girl's right leg peaked out through the fabric of his mother's skirt. His eyes rested on her ankle before it slowly made its way up to her knee and then her soft thigh.

Jesus... I can almost see all of her right leg... He thought to himself and pressed his lips together. He could even spot the hint of her right butt cheek and he bit his chin in frustration.

"Good morning." The sound of her voice distracted him from his mind. The girl had a very soft tone to her voice. She did not sound like she had just woken up.

No please don't talk to me... I can't... Does she really have to be so... Urgh! I will definitely get slapped today. He thought and could already feel the back of his mother's and sister's hands hitting him. How am I supposed to go through the day without being slapped by either mother or Orla if she will look like that? Why don't she just slap me herself...? Hopefully, mother will fix her clothes later... He thought, but he didn't really hope for it.

The girl was still looking at him when he remembered that she had just spoken to him. He wasn't able to construct a response so instead he pressed his lips together and gave her a faint smile in return.

His response didn't seem to be what she expected because she frowned a bit. He must have offended her... She mumbled something under her breath and Keegan felt his brows rise in surprise and amusement. He knew this type of behavior. Orla mumbled nasty things about him like this all the time.

"I might not understand what you just said, but I know when someone is being snide." He told her and smirked at her haughtily.

The blue eyes narrowed and the girl's nose wrinkled. She turned her face away from him. Apparently she wasn't amused by him, that was very clear, but Keegan couldn't focus on whether or not she was pouting. The way her face looked right now had him thrown off and distraught. She looked so charmingly displeased. He wasn't even able to stop smirking at her.

Stop smirking you idiot! He screamed inside of himself. She is going to think you are being rude on purpose!

-The Girl-

Why is he smirking like that? He looks like such a dick right now... She thought as she glanced at him when he wasn't looking. This situation was nothing less than awkward...

She just wanted the rest of the family to wake up so she wouldn't have to be alone with him... He was so distracting, and she had thought of him as kind of nice... but the comment he had just uttered exuded arrogance. So those warm fuzzy feelings his green eyes had summoned in her was temporarily ice cold.

They didn't look at each other for a couple of minutes and there was complete silenced.

Suddenly the man got on his feet and picked up the blanket he had used during the night and then walked past her and into the room where she had slept. From the look of things it had been his bed she had been sleeping in. Why else would he have been sleeping the on the floor?

A feeling of guilt washed over her, but she pushed it away. If he hadn't just acted like a douche bag, then maybe she would have actually felt bad for being the reason he had slept on the floor... but now she was actually kind of grateful that the woman had let her sleep in there...

As he passed her, she kept her gaze to the left, but she felt his eyes on her. The emerald green eyes seemed to be studying every inch of her and it strangely didn't make her uncomfortable. Rather the opposite... She liked it, but she didn't let him know that... In fact she tried her hardest not to let him know just how distracting his gaze was... She kept her eyes averted as he finally walked over the threshold to his room and she then heard the door close behind her.

The scent of him lingered next to her for a couple of seconds and she had a hard time placing it... He smelled of... wood... and... was it dirt? It would make sense since he had gotten down into that hole with her yesterday... but there was something else to his scent. Something she couldn't put her finger on. Was it just the way he smelled?

Later...

A while later they were all sitting at the table. All except for him. There was no quiet and soft murmurs around the table now, instead there was silence, and she felt that it was because of her presence. In front of her stood a wooden plate with a piece of bread that smelled quite nice... it looked a bit... unpolished but it still smelled nice. It smelled freshly baked.

She took the chance to really study the people who had decided to take her in... The girl had strawberry kissed red hair and light green eyes... She was skinny and had cheekbones like a model. All the while she looked like she could break a nose if someone said the word thing to her... She also had very faint freckles on her cheeks and over her nose, but they were very hard to see. The girl could only detect them because she was sitting right next to her.

The younger man was also red haired. However, his was a little darker... but his eyes were the same light green as the girl's. He was normally built and looked just like every other guy. However, he had a lovely smile that he had flashed towards her when he had sat down. It exuded kindness and his eyes had looked like to suns when he had seen her.

Their parents, or whatever they were, shared the traits with their children. However, the man had chestnut colored hair but it was showing some grey streaks here and there, and he also had kind of thick and bushy mustache with the same color as his hair... It made him look kind of... sweet. At times he wiggled it a little. His eyes however... they were the same emerald green as the man that had carried her here. Those eyes were enchanting enough to make you speechless... The woman was obviously the reason and origin for their children's hair color. Hers was a vibrant mixture of red and a tinge of orange. Almost... sunset red. However, her children didn't share this vibrant color with her, but they had most definitely gotten it from her. The mother's eyes were also green, but they were more like the man's siblings' eyes; light green.

"Where's Keegan?" The woman asked and looked around. The girl narrowed her eyes. Keegan... was that his name or was it just a word she didn't understand? It sounded like a name... but she wasn't sure. People wasn't called Keegan from where she was from. Guys were called names like; Dave, Philip or... Eric. Well, classic and modern names. The weirder part was that she wasn't even sure where she was from... She felt her heart start to beat faster as she struggled to keep her panic in order.

Stay calm... Breathe...

"I think he's sleeping." The younger man answered. "I don't think he got much sleep. You know, since you made him sleep on the floor."

The woman grunted something and yelled out the word 'Keegan'.

That must be his name... The girl concluded. It has to be... and the girl is called Orla... I think? Then what is the younger one called? And the parents?

"What do you want?" The man named Keegan grunted through the closed door. He sounded exhausted.

"We are having breakfast. Get your arse in here!" The woman yelled. The girl smiled discreetly. She was amused but the woman's feisty spirit. She was a real no-nonsense kind of woman and somehow it reminded her of someone... but nothing came to mind.

Yet again the feeling of panic washed over her like a massive wave. Why could she still not remember anything?

Don't think about it... You probably hit your head or something and... No! This is insane! I did not hit my head and got amnesia! This is real and these people...

"Have some more bread, dear." The woman woke her up from her disarray of thoughts. She looked at the woman with widened eyes and exhaled in surprise. "Are you alright?" The woman's eyes turned worried and she caressed the girl's cheek softly. When she didn't get an answer she lowered her hand but seemed to keep a close eye on her whilst they continued eating.

Breathe... Don't panic...

Five minutes later there was a very grumpy and agitated person in the room with the rest of them. However, the girl seemed to have taken his seat at the table as well as his bedroom, so he stood whilst eating. He looked out the window with a very stoic expression on his face.

From nowhere the sound of a very high pitched yawn erupted and a large black shadow entered the room. The girl's eyes grew big as a massive long haired dog appeared. The paws were huge and the head as well, but the dog looked like the kindest soul she'd ever laid her eyes on.

A pair of dark chocolate brown eyes searched the room for someone and when they fell on Mr. Grumpy the dog stretched itself out and the girl's eyes widened even more.

My God. I didn't think it could get bigger? It must be some sort of cross breed between two enormous dog breeds.

The dog was just about to walk over to Keegan when it suddenly stuck it's black nose in the air. Something had caught its attention and with three quick sniffs the dog had its eyes set on the girl. Her heart fluttered, she would love to pull her hands through that thick black fur.

She made eye contact with the black fur ball and it immediately looked a lot happier. It set of towards her. The love and affection from an animal would most definitely calm her down.

A quick but very low whistling sound stopped the dog three steps away from her. She looked up and noticed that Keegan was looking at the dog, and then at her. He averted his eyes and then the dog walked over to him. It sat down and leaned against him to be patted.

Why would he do that?

"What do you think her name is?" The younger man suddenly spoke after he had finished his breakfast. The girl studied him shortly but then averted her eyes when he very eagerly met hers in return. She didn't want to give him any ideas... Even if he hadn't shown any signs of being interested in her. However, she wasn't taking any risks.

"You haven't asked her what her name is?" The father spoke now. He gave each of his children a wondering look. He must have asked them something.

"And how do you suggest we do that?" The girl named Orla seemed to ask something back and she sounded a bit uppity.

"Congratulations, Flynn. You are no longer the stupid one." The father said and gave his younger son a quick smirk.

Flynn... Is that his name? She wondered while she drank her milk. It tasted funny... and it wasn't cold... it was lukewarm, but it didn't seem like there were modern stuff like electricity here.

"Hey..." This so-called Flynn chuckled at his father. "If you are so smart... than you ask her."

Arh! I wish I could understand what they are talking about! This is freaking torture

The old man chuckled and rolled his eyes. The girl listened to them intently. She wanted to know if any of the words they spoke sounded even remotely like English, but no luck so far.

Suddenly the old man cleared his throat and looked at her. He was obviously asking for her attention, so she put her food down.

"What is your name?" He asked her something and pointed at her. She looked at her clothes but there was nothing on them. A quiet little laughter arose from the girl, sitting next to her. The others, except for this Keegan, smirked. He just stood with his food and looked out the window.

"I don't understand you." The girl answered the man very shyly. He tilted his head to he left and smiled at her. She crossed her arms and felt very... observed.

"What. Is. Your. Name?" The man enunciated every word and as he said the last word he pointed at her again. When she didn't answer him, he pressed his lips together in thought. He was obviously asking her something.

"Georg." He suddenly said and pointed at himself. "I am Georg." He said. The girl narrowed her eyes.

Is he introducing himself? she wondered and tilted her head unconsciously.

"She doesn't understand you, father." Keegan suddenly spoke. The girl forced herself not to look at him.

"Keep your mouth shut and focus on your breakfast, boy." The man growled. The other's, except for the woman, chuckled.

The girl inhaled slowly and decided that if the sweet man tried to communicate with her... then she would try her best to do the same.

"Georg?" She asked and pointed at him.

Everyone lit up as she said his name. They all nodded and then they seemed to decide that everyone was going to introduce themselves. Next up was Flynn...

"Flynn." She said before he even had opened his mouth. The light green eyes glistened with joy and pride as his name danced on her lips.

"Looks like I made an impression. She knows my name!" He chirped. Whatever he said it made the others roll their eyes while smirking. Still though, Keegan didn't join in. He was sulking. "Flynn." He repeated affirmatively to her and placed his hand against his chest. "Did you hear that, Keegan?"

"Congratulations, she has heard us call you by your name." Keegan muttered something.

"Miriam." The woman said softly and caught the girl's attention. The girl smiled at her. It was a very beautiful name and it had such a nice ring to it. It almost sounded like some sort of melody when she said it.

"Orla." The girl gave Orla the same treatment as her brother and she smiled widely towards her.

However, this Keegan, did not join in on their nice moment. He stood where he was and pretended like he wasn't even there. She couldn't help but to feel a bit annoyed and offended.

Miriam seemed to notice that the girl was bothered by her son's rudeness. She leaned in against her and looked at him.

"That is Keegan." She whispered and the girl confirmed that she had guessed correctly.

"What is your name?" Georg asked her and now the girl understood. He was asking for her name.

She opened her mouth to answer him, it was the only thing she knew, until she was about to form the word in her mind. Nothing. She was completely blank.

My name... My name... Come on, it's... A feeling of beads of sweat emerging on her skin was accompanied by the cold sensation that ran down her spine. My name! Why can't I remember my own name?! The girl felt her breathing become heavy and her eyes widened in panic.

"What's happening?" Orla whispered when the girl started hyperventilating. The other's looked at her with worried eyes and Miriam placed a soothing palm between her shoulder blades.

She placed her hands against her temples and felt her blood rush in her ears. It felt like someone was standing on her chest as well... No matter how deeply she took her breaths, it felt like she was breathing through a straw.

"My name..." The girl whispered as her eyes filled with tears. These were the kind of tears that were so big that they didn't even wait until they fell down her cheeks. They trickled down as soon as it as physically possible and it felt like they rolled down. That's how big they felt. "My name... why can't I..."

Oh my God! What happened to me? What is my NAME?

The room became blurry and she felt herself drift off and her vision going dark. Soon she could feel her hands gripping for something to hold on to, but she failed.

"Someone catch her! She is fainting!" Someone called out.

This time it was Keegan.

-Keegan-

He just managed to run around the table to help Flynn catch the girl mid air. Flynn ended up throwing himself under her so she wouldn't hurt herself in the fall. Keegan caught her head just in time.

"What was that all about?" Orla whispered as she got up from her chair and rushed over to them.

Keegan lifted the girl off of Flynn and sat down on the floor with her head resting against his chest. He immediately felt how her face was wet.

"She's crying, or she was." He sighed in relief that they had caught her.

"Was it because of what I said?" His father asked and it sounded like he felt guilty. "I only asked for her name..."

"She looked like she panicked." Flynn mumbled and watched the girl from where he sat on the floor. "Maybe she doesn't remember and she just... lost it?"

"How could she not remember her own name?" Their mother whispered and her eyes turned sad. No one said anything. They all just watched the girl.

"Mother... what should we do with her?" Keegan asked. "We can't-"

"We will take care of her until we know where she's from and who she is. I will not put her out on the street... The Gods will punish us if we do."

Keegan rolled his eyes mentally. For such a wild tempered woman whom was so quick to anger, his mother was deeply devoted to keeping whatever deities that existed content and pleased.

"I didn't say that we should throw her out." He defended himself.

"Sounds like you want her to stay..." Orla teased. "You know the Gods will punish you if you keep staring at her like you did yesterday..."

A smack was immediately distributed. The sound of it ripped through the air and one could hear how much it hurt... Keegan stared in shock at his little sister who held two hands behind her head. His eyes drifted to his mother.

"Firstly, we do not mock the Gods in this house, Orla. Secondly, do not talk to your brother like that." Their mother hissed at her daughter. "I will not have it."

Keegan pressed his lips together in amusement.

"Keegan. Wipe that smirk of your face and put the girl to bed." His mother ordered him. From the sound of her voice he could hear that she was serious. There was no room for objections.
