Chapter 12. Gone
-Keegan-
"You lost her?" His hissing almost threatening voice was quiet, but a threat Orla seemed to notice no matter how low or loud his voice was.
He took a step closer to his sister. Jared followed him and Orla suddenly did not look as confident like she usually did.
Normally she would never admit to such a mistake, or any mistake for that matter. She would instead throw something in Keegan's face from a time when he had done something similar. Unfortunately for Orla, he had never lost Cara.
Well, I did not lose her at the market... she walked away... right in front of me.
"No... I did not... Yes! Fine! I lost her!" Orla snapped back and her green eyes were practically fuming. They then turned worried and filled with guilt. Keegan knew those eyes. Orla was blaming herself for this and she did not like to be reminded of it. What she liked even less was to admit it out loud.
"She couldn't have gone far." Jared said and it sounded like he was trying to comfort Orla. His gazes swept across the area around them. "I mean... Where would she go and why?"
She is not safe anywhere but with us... why would she leave? Did she leave? Keegan's mind was a mess.
He inhaled deeply and clenched his fists in frustration.
"What happened?" he asked his little sister and locked eyes with her. Orla swallowed nervously. "Were you not supposed to watch her while she was at the old teacher's house?"
"Yes...I don't know..." Orla mumbled. "We never even got there." She told him and rubbed her right cheek with her hand. "We were on our way there and-"
"Wait! What? You-" Keegan did not understand a word of what Orla was saying. "She disappeared? On your way over there? How?"
"I DO NOT KNOW, KEEGAN!" Orla screamed back at him and he could hear how desperate she was getting. "ONE MINUTE SHE IS WALKING BEHIND ME AND THE NEXT SHE IS GONE!" Her green eyes looked like lightning would come out of them if she possessed the ability and he saw how Jared took a step back in terror from his sister's fury.
Orla's eyes spewed hatred. Keegan was not sure if it was meant for him, Cara or for the one or those who could have taken her.
"Did you see anything?" he asked her in a sigh. There was no use in screaming or growling at her, the damage was already done.
"No." Orla sighed at first. "I only saw their tracks when I noticed that she was gone." She added afterwards and placed her hands on her hips. "They were at least two of them."
"Tracks?" Jared asked in confusion and crossed his arms. Orla simply nodded and then looked with dark eyes at her older brother.
Someone took her. Keegan thought and felt a surge of panic flow through him.
A numbing sensation pricked in his fingertips until it was replaced with an anger he had never experienced before. It made his muscles tense and his mind clouded.
"I have never seen tracks like it." Orla continued and her eyes conveyed that she was truly concerned. "Their footwear is different to ours."
"What do you mean?" Keegan asked and tilted his head to the side without realizing it.
"Come on, I will show you." She muttered and waved at him to follow her.
"Go home, Jared." Keegan said when his friend took the first step. He had placed his left hand on Jared's chest and pushed him back. "This does not concern you."
"Fuck off, Keegan." Jared scoffed. "You will not rob me of the only thing that has happened since Orla was forced to wear a dress for one day." Jared laughed and slapped his own thighs in amusement of the memory.
I would not-
In the blink of an eye Jared was not standing next to Keegan anymore. He was lying on the ground with his hands over his face, just like he had been in the woods. A small cloud of dirt moved around him in the breeze created by his fall.
Keegan looked up, not surprised by the sight of his sister breathing heavily, sucking on her knuckles of her right fist. She had knocked Jared to the ground and for some reason it brought Keegan so much pride.
"Good one." He chuckled and placed his arm around Orla as they continued walking. She shrugged it off after a couple of seconds but gave him a look that told him how sorry she was over losing Cara. "Do not worry, Orla... I am sure we will find her before dusk."
It was a lie. He was not sure of anything. What caused him even more concern than his sister's very worried behavior was his own body going into a state of pure panic.
Why am I feeling this way? He wondered and turned his eyes back on the road in front of them. Where is this coming from? I cannot stand being around her so why am I even worried?
"Don't lie to make me feel better, Keegan." Orla sighed. "I might have believed it if she had walked off on her own, but she didn't."
I know... He thought.
-Cara-
She was freezing. The majority of her toes felt numb when she wiggled her body only to find that she was strapped down. Again. The faint memory of being in this exact situation surged through her mind and caused her to inhale deeply while trembling all over from the realization.
The sound of water dripping against metal was close and it gave her goosebumps. A drop of water hit her beneath her left clavicle, and she gasped.
It's so cold! She thought as her body cried for warmth.
The sound of metal carefully meeting metal woke her from her thoughts. It sounded like instruments, like when you were at the doctor's... It sounded like surgical instruments.
"Did you get all the procedures done this time?" A dark voice mumbled close to her. It almost sounded like someone was observing her. Cara whimpered when she was right. Someone had done something to her... surgically.
Wait... I understood him! She quickly thought. He speaks English!
She tried to open her eyes but couldn't. It was first then Cara realized that she was blindfolded, but not gagged.
"What did you do to me?!" She screamed with a coarse voice. A cough ripped its way through her due to her dry throat. But this time she could scream, and she was not going to hold back.
"You didn't sedate her enough." The dark voice stated. It sounded like a man, and like he was talking to someone else.
"I don't know what it is with her, but she needs a lot more than the others." Another male voice, but much softer, muttered next to her.
The others?
"What did you do to me? Answer me!" Cara screamed. "What is happening?"
There came no answers and it felt like they had not even heard her. No matter how much or loud she screamed, it seemed like she could just as easily have been screaming into a void.
Cara coughed again and suddenly felt a stabbing pain in her lower abdomen. She groaned in pain. Close to her ovaries and uterus, something hurt. Terribly. It was like a constant heavy pain that never faded. Like menstrual cramp, but one that didn't go away.
"What did you do to me?" She whispered and gasped from the pain. She wanted to pull her legs up and make herself into a ball, but her legs were still strapped down. This only brought her more pain and tears made their way out of her eyes. They moistened the blindfold she was wearing.
"Put her under. Now."
"But sir, she can't go back this soon. She needs to rest from the-"
"It's a fucking coil to prevent her from getting knocked up! It is not like we performed major surgery on her!" The dark voiced boomed.
Cara cried out. Had they inserted a coil in her? What for? Except for obvious reasons?
"Send her back now!" The dark voice roared. "We have already lost days because of your fuckup!" He hissed. "This whole shit show wasted about six hours of our time and in their time that is about... what? A matter of not just one day, it has probably taken several!" He screamed at the end. Frustration dripped from his voice.
Cara's heart stopped. What was he talking about? Were they going to send her back? Her thoughts started spiraling in a chaotic speed.
What if I end up in a completely new place? What if I can't find Keegan and the others again? What if... what if I die before I even find-
"As you wish, sir." The other man with the softer voice suddenly sighed. He sounded reluctant.
Cara turned her head as much as she could towards his voice and waited until he touched her arm before she spoke.
"Please..." she whispered quietly enough so only he could hear her. "Tell me what is happening." She whimpered and felt more tears blend with her blindfold.
After the sound of a door being closed the voice next to her sighed. An explanation was going to be handed to her, she could hear it on him.
"You are going back." He answered her question in a low tone. "When you wake up, do not move for a while. You should not be going back there for at least a couple of hours, but it is my fault." He sighed and she felt a prick in her arm.
"No! No, please tell me what the meaning of all this is!" She cried and felt her body become warm. It began in her right arm where she had felt the prick. The warmth spread through her like a pleasant wave, but she did not want to give in to it.
"I am sorry... It is not my place to tell you anything. Take my advice and stay still for at least a good ten or fifteen minutes after you wake up. It will feel much better."
"I do not want..." Cara started slurring and her vision turned dark and blurry.
-Keegan-
Orla took him to the place where she had last seen Cara.
They had made it halfway to the old teacher but not a single step further.
Keegan studied their surroundings quickly and it was clear that whoever had taken Cara had planned on doing it where they were; in an area where the road was surrounded by trees, almost like a small forest right before it became a simple field again. It was well protected from curious eyes and Keegan could not blame Orla for not hearing or seeing anything. The ground was soft and left little to no sound when they stepped on it.
"Here." Orla sighed and pointed with her opened hand towards the dirt road beneath their feet. "These are there footprints."
Keegan walked up to her and frowned when he noticed them. There were strange patterns to the footprints. The patterns consisted of strange lines crossing each other at different places and so on. He was completely new to this sort of thing and he could not for his life remember seeing anything like it before.
"Where do they lead?" He asked his sister with a dark voice when he noticed Cara's footprints. He could see just where they had grabbed her and how she had tried to fight them off, only to be dragged off to who knows where.
"In there." Orla said and sighed. She pointed toward some trees and shrugged her shoulders. When Keegan set off to take a look for himself, she hindered him with her hand. "It is no use. I have already searched the area. There are no tracks when at the edge of the trees." She nodded towards the visible field on the other side of the trees.
"Did you look for-"
"I searched this whole place for two hours before I came for you." She interrupted him. "I swear, if I had seen or heard anything I would not have left until I had found her. It is like she disappeared into thin air."
"We have to back and get Blackie." Keegan mumbled. "He might be able to follow her scent."
"It will do us no good. We do not have anything of her which he can-"
"Fuck!" Keegan interrupted his sister when she was right.
My coat. He thought in relief and Orla saw that he has thought of a solution.
"Come on, we are leaving."
"Mother will ask where she is." Orla said sternly.
"Then answer her." Keegan growled.
"You know what will happen if I tell her that her new little gem is gone." Orla said shaking her head.
"I do not care, Orla." He turned and walked away. Orla ran up alongside him and fear was playing in her face. "And she is not gone, she was taken."
"Mother will still kill me." She sighed.
"When we tell her that someone took Cara, you will not have to worry. Mother will kill the ones who took her before she even touch us." He answered and then picked up a faster pace.
