11 - Too soon to be caught
Chapter the Eleventh
Too soon to be caught
Amber's POV
Have you ever run so fast that you felt as if you were stopping time? So fast that you questioned if your clothes were about to be ripped off by the force of the wind that you were cutting through? So damn fast that you even forgot that you had shoes on your feet?!
Well, I guess I wouldn't know how that feeling would be because right now, I 'thought' that I was running at the speed of lightening but to my ultimate surprise, I was only in a jogging formation.
My legs and lungs were already giving up on me. Being unfit is so unfair... I mean, can't God just spare this one time and give me an extra set of legs or even a boost. For crying out loud, flimsy people such as myself can't be going through these types of physical work.
Hmm... I wonder if I were to lose my virginity one of these good days, would I be this tired?
Too bad for me though, tonight would be my last night on this planet. Jaden is maybe on to me as we speak. It would be so funny of he pulls up next to me and extends a gun out of his window and says something like, "Stop b*tch... Really stop embarrassing yourself, you look like a deformed hen when you run. I repeat, stop and get in the vehicle... Make this easier on yourself."
Then, no lie, I'd die on the spot. I'd save him the trouble and humiliation of having me entering his vehicle like this. I may be dressed somewhat normal but come on, I'm Amber, just having me around is embarrassing.
Luckily for me, none of the above actually occurred and there is a slight chance of me escaping.
Stopping, resting my palms on my knees, my breathing was extremely heavy. If I didn't take a break now, I'd end up fainting on the sidewalk. People would just pass me by because they'd guess that I was a homeless person who stole someone's bag and collapsed since I've been trying to lose the victim around the corner.
Gosh, I really do need to start taking good care of myself. I need to start acting like a growing woman. One who kept up with the fashion world, one who knew what it felt like to get compliments from random persons on the street.
But, that's it, I could never be that person...
Already catching my breath, I stood upright and tried finding the closest restaurant so that I could grab a sit and even something to eat. I was exhausted and famished. Now I knew how it felt to be hiking through the wilderness without a meal. I didn't really know but right now I felt the way my phone feels when the battery is dying out. Never have I been so alert and hungry.
Spotting the exact same restaurant from the night of the party, an edged smile crept to my face. The memories made there were awesome. Kevin and Jaden, the best-friends of the century. Too bad for me though, no matter the memories made, this would be my last time ever entering here.
Stepping inside, I paced for the washroom. The moment I got to the center of the restaurant, coincidentally my eyes locked onto a familiar figure. Not sure if my eyes were playing tricks on me, I squinted and stared for a while. Learning from Usain Bolt himself, the simple shift of this person's neck and the rotating movement of their face had me ducking and fitting myself under a nearby table.
Hold potato chips and whipped cream! Why am I so stupid! How didn't I think of this before entering this place. Amber, stupid, stupid, stupid!
Yes, you guessed right, Jaden Brat was seated three tabled from my current location. Normally he would be based here together with Kevin, but Kevin was nowhere to be seen. Great, that way I only have one person to dodge.
A sigh of relief exists my lips, knowing that I had a chance of survival.
The moment I was about to make a move for it, the most unexpected thing happened.
A huge foot, the size of my freaking Ad Math text book came in contact with my toes. The pain had me quickly blocking my mouth because I knew that one heck of a scream would have escaped my lips. Luck wasn't on my side though, the impact made me jump, causing me to hit my head from under the table.
The owner of those gigantic army tanks stopped in his tracks and began looking around. I held my breath, not wanting to blow my cover. This could cause a scene and then Jaden will spot me with his bag on my back and since he knew where I lived... He'd just put a name to my face since we've already met and even spoke to each other. This could ruin my chance of escaping.
Suddenly, the table cloth was lifted and a guy stoops down in front of me. I hurriedly closed my eyes.
If I can't see him, he wouldn't be able to see me. I am now invisible. No one can detect or feel my presence anymore. Superpower, activated!
A chuckle escaped this individual's lips and he then began conversation. "Amber, what do you think you're doing? Superpower activated, huh, funniest sh*t I've heard in such a long time," He says, letting out a real laugh this time. Hopefully he wasn't drawing the attention of the patrons towards us.
Praying to God that the voice I heard is who I think it is, I open my eyes slowly. A blanket of relief covers over me as I observed Kevin's amused face. He then stands up and outstretches me a hand, "I'm sorry about destroying your toes by the way, I didn't see you there. Instead of having a repeat of unfortunate events, I suggest that you get up from under the table. Just a hint."
I smile, being quite amused at the situation. I simple shake my head and reply, "It's pretty comfy down here if I do say so myself. And don't worry about it, my toes needed some cracking anyways."
"So you're not gonna get up from under there? Should I call Jaden over to convince you otherwise?" A smirk formed on his face, the look in his eyes were filled with something and trust me, I was scared to find out what it was.
"Nope, no need to call Jaden over, ha-ha," I say, letting out a shaky laugh. "You don't even need to tell him that you saw me here tonight. Just go to your seat, I need some personal space under here. Trust me on this one, this alone time can save me my life."
My face mirrored fear and I knew it. Kevin seemed to have noticed this and brushed it off. He simply nods, presents me with a thumbs up and strides towards Jaden's table.
Tonight was going much better than expected. Maybe, things were unfolding too much in my benefit. I have a feeling that the cycle of nature and the laws of physics won't be too pleased with this.
"Dude, the weirdest thing just happened. The GPS went off alerting me that that good for nothing thief is in this restaurant!" Jaden wails, there was a hint of excitement in his voice. "I'm gonna kill that bitch when I lay hands on-"
"Calm the f*ck down bro, what makes you so sure that it wasn't a false alarm?" Kevin asks, and I hear the lack of interest in his voice.
"Really Kev? This tracking device was worth big f*cking money and trust me, it is forever accurate. So stop being a lil wuss and be at the edge of your chair, knowing that our fists, mostly mine is going to colliding into some pathetic asshole's skull. Well not literally 'cause hitting a girl that way isn't right even if she may be a thief and tried messing up my flow."
A lump develops in my throat, I gulp, feeling fear creeping up my spine. I was gonna fudging die tonight! What on earth am I going to do? I didn't even have time tell my mom, Eva of Amelia good bye. Oh my God, Amelia... I hope that she's doing better than I am right about now.
"This is your bone to pick Jay, not getting involved. I bet, you'd be more than able to handle this on your own," Kevin responds; the sound of a knife cutting into whatever that was on his plate was then followed with chewing noised.
Suddenly, the forceful hit of Jaden's fist on the table made me jolt, "You're right! But, I'll deal with this after I eat... My body needs some fuel before I get into action."
There was silence not long after. The sound of cutlery on plates, glasses being placed on the table after it was drank from. I saw this as a go ahead for me to get my lame bum out of this place before it was too late.
Peeping my head from under the table, I saw Kevin's head down, focused on his food. Kevin, clear. Darting my eyes towards Jaden's direction, I see that he was digging into his front pocket, meaning that his attention was on whatever he was searching for. Jaden, clear.
Crawling from under the table... I tried my best to get as close to the front door before I actually stood up and made a run for it. The instant I stood up and was about to make my first stride to commence my running frenzy, I heard the worst thing that I could hear right about now.
"Dude, the culprit is on the move. They're heading out of the restaurant. Hey! Look, the person is making a run for it! Hey you! Stop right there!"
The sound if rustling chairs and tabled being pushed aside was an extra boost. I began running like I've never ran before in my entire life.
The fact that Jaden was literally like my tail right now, had me envisioning many death scenes in my mind. Oh Lord, please don't allow him to catch up.
Who am I kidding, the guy is an athlete, I don't stand a chance against him and running, come on I suc-
Mid thought, I felt five fingers gripping onto my hair firmly. Because I was running, the force pulled me backwards causing me to plant myself down back first. A scream of pain escapes my lips and I felt tears ready to flood my eyes. This was it... I was about to die.
Though I was on the ground suffering, his hand still gripped the hair to the back of my head. Thankfully he was because if he wasn't holding on, my skull would have cracked due to said fall. My eyes open, Jaden's face was more astonished than angry or even excited. He closes his eyes and shakes his head and then opens them again before he spoke up... His voice held so many questions, surprise and disappointment.
"Amber...?"
