04 - Away from hell for a month
Chapter the Forth
Away from hell for a month
Amber’s POV
I didn’t dare to make a move. All this was too much for me to handle, I mean, the senior block literally exploded! What if I had gone inside the school, what if, just what if? Thanks dad, for blessing my face with a horrendous bruise on the cheek! If wasn’t for you, I’d have been made into nerd style barbeque.
Staring at my beloved school building, I saw the students running out of their classes. The emergency bell kept on ringing and noted for us to get away from the senior block. Soon after, the voice of our principal rang throughout the school. “All senior students please make your way to the auditorium! Stay clear of the areas next to the explosion. I repeat, stay clear of the area!”
I shook my head and whipped a sweat bead off my forehead. Seriously, I was way too fragile to be experiencing stuff like this. ‘For crying out loud, what’s the worst that could happen?’ I question mentally, and as if on cue, the rain started drizzling.
The one thing I hated the most was getting my hair wet in public.
Finally thinking right, I began jogging to the auditorium which was located on the other side of the school next to the juniors. Though I wasn’t a sportive person, the cold droplets from the rain aided in the quickening of my speed and caused me to pass a few students.
The funny thing was, the school has sheltered walkways but we intelligently decided to run on the grass. If I didn’t mind my step properly, I would be already lying in the dirty puddles of water which was already forming. No matter all this commotion, there were only two questions on my mind. Who the hell would do something so crude? And where the hell could Jaden have gone to? Not that I care anyways.
Entering the auditorium, I twisted my hair at the entrance, wetting the area around me even more. My outfit wasn’t soaking wet so there was no need to remove any object of clothing. The room was air conditioned, causing me to tremble a little. Hugging myself slightly, I walk up, approaching the area where most of the students were gathered.
Walking onto the stage, my principal Mr. Bandage, scratches the back of his head and exclaims, “Holy fu*king sh*t! What the hell is going on here?! Oops sorry guys, please excuse my French.”
Half of the senior population stares at the principal in shock, wondering what his outburst was all about... It’s true that all of this was absurd and confusing but wow, someone needs a special toothbrush. I can’t blame him for his reaction though, because if I was in his situation and my school just blew up, I’d be worst. But minus the profanities though.
“Okay, everyone, listen up!” He shouts from the stage, not using his microphone. The many students who were about to have panic attacks and whatnot, they straightened up at the sound of his voice. Continuing, he says, “This is just too ridiculous to be true! But, being the responsible principal that I am, I need to get things under control. In the meantime, all seniors would be advised to stay at home for an entire month! Your block needs to be repaired and we will need time to do this. Be glad that our school is way ahead than the others so the one month out won’t even dent our total average.”
There were many cheers from the crowd of students but I couldn’t help the groan. No school meant staying at home and staying at home meant seeing my parents more often. It was really bad of me to not want to see them but what happened today could definitely repeat itself and I was beyond the point of surety that I didn’t want a reply.
Mr. Bandage continues speaking and says something about emailing our parents a letter to tell them about the absence of school. My mind was straying away to different matters so I didn’t quite catch every detail. Looking around, I scanned the room for Eva. That’s strange, normally she was pretty punctual.
Was something up?
“Hey! Amber, there you are!” Someone shouts from behind me. Diverting my attention to the direction the voice came from, I see a perfectly dry Eva jogging towards me. Her heels clattered on the floors and her hair flew everywhere. “Where have you been E, some weird stuff has happened,” I say as soon she was standing in front of me and giving her a fast hug.
“I’ll explain later. What’s going on here?” She questions, looking around while fixing her bag on her shoulder. Though the AC was kind of drying my clothes, I still wanted dry ones like Eva’s at the moment. It was so freaking cold!
“Well you see…” I start off, going into detail of what happened. My story started from the encounter with Jaden at the gate to the senior block exploding. Including the fact that I saw a few guys dressed in black running out of the school and ending with the big news of not having school for an entire month. Once I was done, my best friend literally starts jumping up and down.
“Holy fucking shit! My dreams are finally coming true! Well, minus the senior block turning to dust part. This is so awesome! Oh my God, what to do, what to do? Eeeeep, this is co cool!” I stared at her in disbelief. Was I the only one who was going to miss coming to school for a month? Yes, Amber, actually you are.
“How on Earth could you be so thrilled about not coming to school?” I asked baffled. Eva only shakes her head at me and then places a hand on my shoulder. “Oh my little nerd friend, when life gives you apples, make lemons out of them. And when you have those lemons, make a great big jug of lemonade.”
“You know that made no sense at all, right?” I respond with a laugh. Eva only shrugs at me. Wrapping her arms around my shoulders, she turns me around to view the exit of the auditorium. Pointing at the door, Eva finally speaks up once more, “Young one, walk through the doors of truth with me. Come over to the dark side.”
Eva and I walked towards the exit but I couldn’t help shake my head. Every time she was really merry, she would start speaking like some ancient wise dude. It was quite enjoyable from time to time but I needed to say something. Stopping in my tracks, I made sure that my poker face was now present.
“We haven’t even been dismissed as yet Eva. Isn’t this technically ditching?” An annoyed groan escapes her lips and then she smacks me at the back of my head. I let out a soft ‘ouch’ and then glared at her. “What was that about?”
“That was called ‘knocking some sense into an idiot’ but you could call it whatever you like,” She replies, dragging me behind her and bringing me outside. The rain seemed to have stopped and the sun was out again.
Whilst we walked towards the parking lot to the front of the school, I could still smell and see the smoke ascending into the clouds. The firemen were working hard in making sure that there wasn’t any flame left unextinguished. The police were there also and some FBI agents. They were investigating the area. All this made me feel as if I was in some weird movie.
“Buckle up A,” Eva’s voice brought me back to reality and I did as instructed. My mind was so far away that I didn’t recall getting to her car. Oh well, at least I wasn’t spacing out too much to enter the wrong car. I removed Jaden’s bag from my lap and placed it gently onto the back seat. We didn’t want anything going wrong here, if you know what I mean.
The two of us drove off of the school’s premises. This was feeling so wrong! Ditching school in the time when we needed information the most. Was Eva really going insane? Okay, she was already at that stage but holy moly dude! She didn’t even ask about anything concerning if anyone of the students got hurt or what not. Ah well, that was Eva for you.
I didn’t question as to where we were going because it was already somewhat clear where we were headed. On our way to our destination Eva and I had some small chat, laughed a little and whatnot. She made jokes about the auditions for the squad and I couldn’t help but laugh because these girls sounded ridiculous.
“I’m starving!” She wails, getting out of her car at the same time with me. Using her key to lock up, I followed behind. “You do know that it’s still early in the morning, right?” I state as we pushed the doors of the local diner open. Eva shrugs at me and puts her tongue out.
Walking into the building, the cozy feeling enveloped my body. A smile slowly crept onto my lips. The persons who were already seated at their booths gave me this weird look and I shook it off. I already knew that they were bold-facedly making rude comments on my clothes with their partners. What’s wrong with these persons? Haven’t they seen someone with such a unique fashion sense as mine? Pfft, I guess not then. Haters are gonna hate!
“What can I get you girls?” The waitress addresses us and we put in our orders and then made ourselves comfortable as we waited patiently for our meals. Soon as the young lady was gone, Eva stares at me with a goofy expression on her face. Telling by the way her eyes were sparkling, I figured that it was finally time for her to break the news as to why she was late for school this morning.
“This morning I met this amazing girl Amber! She was so freaking perfect that my breath was caught in my throat! I think she goes to our school and she’s in the same year as us. I think this is the one this time!” She squeals and I couldn’t contain my laughter any longer.
Eva always had this habit of finding this really hot girl, fooling around with her and says that ‘she’s the one’. Eva being Eva gets bored with her girlfriends really quick and moves on just as nippy. I might not know anything about relationships but one thing was sure, Eva’s owns are not healthy ones.
Smacking me on the shoulder jokingly, she says, “Hey! What’s so funny? Ha-ha.” Obviously she joined in with the laughing too because, laughter was contagious, duh! “It’s funny because that’s what you said about all your exes dude. I really advise that you just marry your hand. That way it won’t disappoint you.”
Both Eva and I let out a gasp at my comment. Since when did I make such vile remarks? The freak is going on here? I suspect that Eva was finally rubbing off on me. Eva’s eyes were about to fall to the floor but she still managed to speak up. “Whoa, where did that come from?”
“Believe it or not, my mouth,” Like wow Amber, it couldn’t have come from your anus, could it huh?
Eva then starts to laugh but it was soon interrupted by the soft call of her name. “Hey, um… Eva?” A petit girl calls out, standing next to our booth and playing with her thumbs. She was cute. Her hair was dark and her eyes were a sky blue color. She was shorter than Eva and I could tell even though Eva was still seated. This girl’s face looked familiar and then it sunk in.
That’s Fiance Cobbler. She’s… well, the principal’s step daughter.
“Oh my, I thought that we wouldn’t see each other again!” Eva says, standing up and hugging her tight.
“I know, right? It’s such a coincidence!”
“It sure is!”
They chatted for a while and I was bored out of my mind. Eva even flirted with her a little and she did the same harmlessly. The exact moment our food got here, she made herself scarce. Right now Eva and I were enjoying out blue berry pancakes and I stole a glance at her. She was smiling to herself and then it all sank in.
“No…” I say trailing off. Giving me an evil grin, Eva nods her head nonetheless. “You do know she’s straight right?” I pressured onwards. Shaking her head, Eva replies to me, the smile never living her face. “That’s because she has never met these babies,” She says, wriggling her fingers.
“Oh my God, you’re so disgusting,” I answer, sending my napkin in her face jokingly. We then laugh about it, chatted and ate for the rest of the morning. I liked this feeling a lot. The whole Jaden matter was off my mind the entire time but I knew that this moment was too good to ever last a lengthy amount of time.
