Gwen Accused of Witchcraft
Catie's POV
After my morning chores for Arthur. I went with Gwen to pick out some flowers for Morgana. Who apparently has not been sleeping well and it still having nightmares. Poor girl. Anyway, we're on our way back to the castle. So that she can give Morgana the flowers and I can fold Arthur's dry clothes. When we see Merlin and Gaius pulling a wagon.
"Morning Merlin, Gaius" I say.
"What are you doing?" Gwen asks them curious.
"Er... just moving something" Merlin tells us.
"It looks heavy" Gwen states.
"Do you both need some help?" I ask.
"No we got it" he assures me. "It's nothing really. Erm... did someone got you flowers?" he asks Gwen. Changing the subject.
"Oh, no" she tells him with a giggle. "Would you like one?" she asks him. She plucks a purple one from the bundle. "A purple one. Purple suits you. Not that I'm saying red doesn't suit you" he rambles. He places the flower in his scarf.
"Thank you" he says. "Er... see you both" he says and leaves with Gaius. And the wagon. As we said 'bye'.
"Is it just me? Or were they hiding something?" I ask Gwen.
"I'm sure it's nothing to worry about" she assures me. "Isn't Merlin late for his duties?" she asks me.
"Yep, as usual" I tell her. We reach the castle and go our separate ways. I go to Arthur's chambers.
"Have you seen Merlin?" he asks me.
"He was with Gaius" I tell him.
"Well he is late again" he states. There's a knock on the door.
"Prince Arthur, the king wishes to see you and Gaius in the council chambers" a guard says.
"We'll be right there!" Arthur calls. "Catalina, go get Merlin and Gaius" he tells me. I nod my head and leave. I go to Gaius' chambers and knock. Merlin answers it.
"Arthur says you're late" I tell him.
"Erm... I'm on my way. Sorry I'm late" he states.
"Not me you have to apologize too" I tell him. "Besides I think Arthur is getting used to it" I add. I smile when I still has the purple flower in his scarf. "Anyway, please inform Gaius that the king wishes to see him right away in the council chambers" I tell him and leave.
I stand by Merlin as Arthur looks at the flower in his scarf. Merlin blushes slightly. "It was a gift from Gwen" he mutters as Gaius exams the body.
"What's happened to him?" Uther asks him.
"I don't know, Sire. It's the second case I've seen today" Gaius states. Must of been the heavy thing he and Merlin were moving earlier.
"Why didn't you report it to me?" Uther asks.
"I was attempting to find the cause" Gaius states.
"What did you conclude?" Uther asks.
"I don't think it's time to hurry to conclusions. The scientific process is a long one" Gaius tells him.
"What are you concealing from me?" Uther asks him suspiciously.
"Sire, I have seen nothing like it. The victims are dying in 24 hours, and it's spreading fast" Gaius explains.
"What is the cause?" Uther demands.
"I think you should say that the cause, the most likely cause, is sorcery" Gaius states. Uther pulls Arthur aside and talks to him in hushed tones. No doubt giving him orders. I only heard the part about letting Merlin help Gaius find a cure. Guess I'll be working late again.
I didn't work as late as expected. Though I had collect some water for father and I. As Gwen had used all she had collected the other day for dinner. Gwen decided not to have water with dinner. But father and I did. Which turned out to be a big mistake, as we both woke deathly ill the following morning.
(Gaius' Chambers) Third Persons POV
When Gwen saw that her father and sister had gotten the illness. She ran to Gaius' chambers. Praying he had found a cure. "Gwen?!" Gaius says surprised. He was expecting Merlin, who he had sent to collect some water to test.
"Gaius" she says close to tears.
"You have the sickness?" he asks her concerned and she shakes her head. As tears stream down her cheeks.
"My father and sister! Please, Gaius, they're all I have" she pleads. As Merlin appears with a bucket of water.
"Gwen, I have no cure" he tells her sadly.
"I am begging you" she says.
"I wish there was something, anything, but so far the remedy is beyond what I can achieve" he tells her sadly taking her hand. "I'm sorry Gwen" he says and she runs from the room.
"There must be something we can do" Merlin states.
"My best. Let's hope that this can provide some answers" Gaius tells him. Taking the bucket of water from him.
"But that'll be too late for Gwen's father and Catie" Merlin tells him.
"I fear you may be right" Gaius says sadly. He was fond of Catie, she is a very bright girl. Always helping any in need. Gaius puts some of the water in a jar, and places a flower in it. Merlin goes to his room. He couldn't let Catie and her father die.
That night he snuck out and went down to Gwen's house with two poultices. He puts one under Catie's pillow and her father. Being careful not to wake Gwen. "þu fornimst adl fram guman" he says and sees the sickness leave Catie & her father. He leaves and watches from outside as Catie & Tom steer.
Catie's POV
I wake up groggily. I had the strangest dream. A male voice said something in a strange language and I suddenly started to feel better. I look over as Gwen and our father. Who is also awake and he strokes Gwen's hair. "Father?" she asks as she wakes.
"Gwen" he says.
"What's happened? I can't believe it!" she cheers and hugs him.
"Where's my hug?" I ask her. She turns and gasps in shock. She rushes over and hugs me too. We rejoiced and soon went back to bed. The next day father and I were well enough to return to work. So he returned to his blacksmith shop. While I went to the castle with Gwen. I went to Arthur's room, to see him not present. He must be training or something. I get started on my chores.
I had just made the bed when Arthur appears. "Catalina!" he says shocked.
"Morning my lord" I say.
"I heard you and your father were sick" he states.
"We were, very sick. But we woke this morning completely fine" I tell him.
"Really?" he asks.
"Yes, I don't know how. But I am grateful, Gwen would have been devastated if she had lost father and I" I state. "What are my chores today?" I ask him.
"I want you to take it easy, you have just recovered after all" he tells me. "I must go on patrol with the guard. Why don't you go relax?" he suggests.
"Only if you're sure my lord, I know Merlin is still helping Gaius" I state.
"I can manage without you both for a couple of days" he states. I chuckle, it's cute that he thinks that. He left and I decide to go visit Gwen. I see her with Merlin.
"Catie, I am so glad to see you are alright" he states.
"Thanks" I say. "You may have some extra chores, Arthur told me to take it easy" I tell him.
"That's fine" he states. "Speaking of chores, I should get back to Gaius" he tells us and leaves. I look around Morgana's chambers and notice the flowers we had gotten her are dead.
"Oh no" I say.
"Strange, they should have be dead" Gwen states.
"How about you empty it once you finish cleaning the room and I'll go pick some fresh flowers" I suggest. She nods her head and I leave the room. I went outside the city walls and pick some fresh flowers. As I walk back to the castle I run into Merlin.
"Someone get you flowers?" he asks me.
"No, just some fresh ones for Morgana. For some reason the ones Gwen and I picked the other day are dead. Even though we put them in fresh water" I tell him. He goes to speak when Gwen appears being dragged by two guards.
"Catie! Merlin, please help me!" she cries. "Why won't you listen to me?!" she asks the guards.
"Gwen!" I shout and go to help her only to be grabbed by Arthur. "Let me go! That's my sister!" I cry. Where are the guards taking her and why? Gaius left with Merlin.
"She's been arrested for using magic" Arthur tells me.
"Rubbish, my sister is no sorceress" I snap.
"Then how do you explain yours and your father's miraculous recovery?" he asks me. I don't say anything. "I'm sorry Catie" he says softly releasing me and leaves. I run to Morgana.
"I take it you heard about Gwen" she states sadly.
"Yes and it's complete rubbish! My sister is no sorceress, what reason does she have to attack Camelot? Please I can't lose my sister" I tell her.
"We'll save her" she assures me. "Come" she says and I follow her to the throne room. Where Gwen is kneeling on the floor before Uther and the court. "I believe you. Perhaps this is a disease that is not always fatal. Have you thought of that? Perhaps Catie and their recovered naturally" she states.
"And what of these poultices that were found?" Uther asks her.
"What poultices? I don't know anything about poultices!" Gwen cries.
"It was found in your house. Undo this enchantment. Put an end to this contagion" Uther orders. I so want to snap at him. But then I won't be able to help prove Gwen's innocence.
"I can't" she tells him.
"I will show you no mercy" he tells her.
"I am not a witch. I don't know how to stop the illness!" she shouts.
"If you will not undo your sorcery, you force my hand and I must find you guilty" he states. "It is therefore my duty to pronounce judgment. And under the circumstance I have no choice but to sentence you to death" he declares. Tears stream down my face as Morgana hugs me. "I can only hope that when you die, this evil plague dies with you" he states. He orders the guards to take her away.
"Please, no! I'm innocent! Please, please, no! Please help me! Please, I beg you! No!" she cries.
"Gwen!" I shout as Morgana holds me tighter.
"Catie I want you to go home" Morgana tells me as the courtiers leave.
"But Gwen..." I cry.
"She won't die, I promise" she assures me in a whisper. "Go" she says and I nod my head. I leave and go home. Where dad meets me and I run into his arms crying. Telling him about Gwen. He assured me that everything will be alright, we just have to have faith. And he was right.
The thing responsible for the disease was found and killed by Arthur. All those still alive suffering the illness, started to recover. Gwen was proven innocent of witchcraft. Father, Merlin, Morgana and I went down to the dungeon as Gwen is released.
"Dad, Catie!" she cries tears of joy. We share a family hug as she is released. Guinevere reaches to grasp Morgana's hand. "Thank you" she says.
"Don't thank me. It was more Merlin" Morgana states. I look at him surprised.
"Really?" Gwen and I ask.
"He's the real hero here" Morgana tells us. I hug him.
"Thank you Merlin" I tell him.
"I didn't do anything" he says modestly. I just kiss his cheek and go back over to Gwen. Hugging her again.
"Catie and I are grateful to you all. Come on, Gwen" dad says. The three of us leave the dungeon and go home.
"I think Merlin may like you Gwen" I say teasingly and she blushes.
"Doubt it, besides he is not my type" she states. I giggle. Dad decided we'd go to the tavern for dinner to celebrate Gwen's release. It was nice not to cook or worry about dishes. We then all went home and I slept with Gwen in our bed like usual. While Dad slept in his. I pray I never lose my sister.
