TWENTY

WHEN TIGRIS, CORIOLANUS AND I STEPPED INSIDE THE classroom, Lucky had been going over the tribute form district 8 being murdered last night.

The image of his dead body on the screen causes my entire body to freeze, the memories of last night haunting me like a cloud over my head.

I swallow thickly, stuck in my tracks as I stand next to Lysistrata, who has a puzzled look fixated on her face and her arms crossed over her torso as she thinks through this situation. "Mari, they aren't showing us what happened to that little boy."

She turns to face me and I'm sure she suspects something. Maybe she knows that Coriolanus--

A hand meets my back, cutting my train of thought and causing my entire body to stiffen. He's come to rescue me from an unwanted interrogation--I'm a terrible liar, and frankly, if Lissy asked me anything about last night I'd give everything away just due to my lack of skills in the lying department.

"He clearly was killed right there. There are cameras everywhere." She waves a hand in the air, pointing at his dead body on the screen. Once she notices Coryo beside me, she now turns to face him. "It doesn't make sense.

"They were old cameras, Lissy." Festus smirks, joining in on the conversation. "Probably just another one of Coral's."

Lucky then approaches us, but only tells Festus to sit down--reminding us that we're still assigned to the same seats we chose yesterday.

"Hey, have you heard anything about Felix?" I turn to face Festus in my chair. I don't know whether I should believe Dr. Gaul or not when saying he had been fighting for his life or not, but I also don't have a reason not to.

Festus shakes his head, but then I watch a lightbulb go off in his brain as a conniving smirk appears on his face as he looks at me. "But, uh, since when were you and Coriolanus a thing?"

I almost want to laugh because he's teasing me, trying to get me riled up but honestly, his smirk infuriates me and I don't want to give him the satisfaction of seeing me laugh. "Fuck off, Festus."

He almost snorts too, and I'm relieved to have some sort of comic relief today, but apparently not for long because the screen switches to a view where we see Mia, Lucy Gray, and Jessup still in that room in the underground tunnels.

Lucy Gray and Jessup had been sitting next to one another, leaning into each other while Mia laid asleep in the center of the floor.

Jessup lets out a series of uncomfortable grunts and moans in his slumber and Lucy Gray goes to place the back of her hand against his sweaty forehead, but this startles him and he jolts away. But once he sees Lucy Gray sitting there, he lunges right at her.

Mia awoke from this, I can see it just before the camera follows Lucy Gray running away.

He's screaming at her, asking her why she would do this to him as Lucy Gray runs out from the tunnel and into the center of the arena.

To my left, away from the screen, I can see both Coryo and Lissy rise from their seats, watching as their tributes turn on one another.

I can't help but wonder where Mia is and if she's safe from Coral and her gang now or not.

Lucy Gray is panting and trying her hardest to run from Jessup up on the stands.

The camera zooms back in on Jessup and his mouth is foaming. There's foam and spit salivating out of his mouth and it's so clear that the bat bite from the train has given him rabies.

Somebody has to act fast or else both of them are going to die and Coriolanus and Lysistrata are both cut from winning the prize.

Lucky announces that a drone is being sent and within seconds a drone comes flying into the arena--the glass bottle of water shattering against Jessup's chest.

Genius.

Water is known to scare any being with rabies so in doing this, I'd have to applaud whoever's idea this was.

Jessup gasps and yells and falls backward, his life being cut short by his rough landing on the rock 6 feet below.

We see Lucy Gray slowly ease down the rocks to join Jessup's dying body and I can feel Coriolanus look down at me.

I meet his gaze, and I can read in his eyes that he's telling me he doesn't want me to think this was his doing. He and I both know that he was the one to suggest sending that drone but he didn't kill Jessup and he wanted to make sure I knew that.

Another repetitive order of weapons clashing sounds and Coryo splits his eye contact from me.

On the screen, Coral and her minions have surrounded Lucy Gray in a circle. She's outnumbered; there are four of them and only one Lucy Gray.

The one chucks his nunchucks at her, knocking her onto the ground as she lets out a yelp.

She throws a rock at the one district's feet, but that obviously does nothing. They've backed her into a corner, taunting her as they sling their weapons around at her.

Mia has come out of utterly nowhere, she's holding the machete the tribute from last night cut Coriolanus with and yanks the boy with the nunchucks to her. Her arm wraps around his neck, holding him in almost a headlock as she uses her opposite arm to hold the machete over him. "You hurt her and your friend gets it."

"She's bluffing." Coral's face contorts in some sort of taunt, narrowing her eyes on Mia. "Little Miss Perfect doesn't have it in her."

Mia raises an eyebrow, cocking her head as she accepts this as a challenge, almost. "Oh yeah?"

She quickly swaps out her machete for her forearm and swipes the blade against his neck. The blood splatters onto the ground, just barely missing Lucy Gray as she drops his body onto the ground.

Mia is now out in the open--a perfectly clear target for anyone to knock her out. And Coral almost does, but before she can, nearly a dozen drones come flying in, and when they do, they attack the four tributes.

"You can't attack the tributes!" A blonde girl to my left exclaims to Coriolanus, voicing my thoughts.

"I'm just sending water!" Coryo calls back, and I can't stop the prideful smile on my face from forming.

Within seconds, all three of the surviving tributes are on the ground and Mia and Lucy Gray have run to hide in one of the cracks in the arena.

They'd taken three of the five remaining waters, and although they were now out of any camera lens' view, I knew they were up to something.

Coryo takes one more look at me with a small smirk on his face and I can't help myself from replicating it.

Lucy Gray and Mia are alive and they're doing a pretty amazing job.
