Chapter 7: More than 21 Questions

I yawned and leaned onto the side of the couch, my eyes slowly blinking shut with the disappearing stars. I felt like my body and mind were in two different dimensions refusing to reunite.

"Alright, so their normal time frame in the bank lasts around four minutes. It's not long, but the alarm triggers are efficient and immediate, so the girls take that risk strategically." Green interrupted the three of us as he entered the doorway, "come to the conference room."

I slapped my cheeks and let the coolness from my hands refresh my sleepiness. The others were completely awake and the fact that dawn was coming in a few hours didn't seem to faze their sleeping patterns. I, on the other hand, was a mess. My face reeked with exhaustion and ironically I'd had the least contribution.

I fell onto a chair and gazed at the projector. It was a scene we had been hearing about, but not seeing.

"I've forwarded it, and trimmed the footage to what's relevant. Keep your eyes on the Gardevoir, and how different the two responses are."

Green played the video, and we cautiously watched the scene unfold.

"How long?" The Gothitelle shouted as she moved to collect a full bag of notes, continuing to point her gun at the cashiers.

"Two th-thirty." The Gardevoir had her arms around her chest, and leaned onto the reception desk.

"What? Speak up!" Vespiquen's voice was bitter as she took out a Poké Ball from her pocket.

There was a muffled sound and we watched as the Gardevoir swayed, then slumped downwards.

"Shit! What happened?" Gothitelle dropped the bag she was holding and then ran to her team mate, "Is anyone a here a doctor?"

As the Gothitelle brandished her gun frantically, the Gardevoir beside her groaned. "We need to go, get me out."

The lined up hostages were all on their knees, staring at the floor in a mixture of horror and fear. Vespiquen strut behind each of them, sometimes tapping her gun against the back of the heads. As the other two members left through the back exit, we watched the evil woman release the deceased Spearow in front of the line of hostages. There was an air of gasps and some people turned away at the cruelty, but Vespiquen simply chuckled to herself.

It was pure sadism.

They were running short on time and as the Gothitelle came back to collect the bags, her remaining partner crushed the Poké Ball beneath her heeled black boots.

"Let's go, we're out of time."

"Oh no," Vespiquen moved to face the camera directly and it eerily felt like she was staring at me, "what does a few minutes matter? They can't find us anyway."

"What the hell?" Blue interrupted our attention on the footage, "She's just doing this for the thrill."

It was true and the girl only proved that when, to our shock, she lifted her mask.

"Arceus, what the hell?" Red murmured.

Her pale face mockingly glanced at us as she slowly licked her pink lips, "The DAPP have nothing on us."

"And that's when it freezes," Green paused the clip on her face, "I'm guessing the Gardevoir froze it whilst she was in the van, but I've ran tracks on her face."

"No matches with the data bases?" Red asked, scowling back at the cocky face.

"None. She's completely unidentifiable and knows it."

"Guys," I peeled my eyes away from her vivid purple pair, "she's not just mocking the police, she's specifically taunting the DAPP. Why us?"

"That's true," Blue snapped her fingers in my direction, "Why is she so sure its the DAPP investigating her when we haven't had any press releases yet?"

"You don't think she has someone working from the inside?" Green's eyes flashed with anger.

"I don't think so," Red shook his head, "It's more of a game between the Queen's Maids and DAPP. She's one step ahead of us, but there's nothing that directs she has internal knowledge."

I leaned my head onto the table and sighed to myself; this was ridiculously misleading.

"We can't stop, she's going to hit again and these robberies are only scaling upwards." Red looked at me as my eyes blurred, "if you're part of K-Z, you stay awake."

"He's right," Blue stood up and began typing on her her phone, "but I'm hungry and we skipped dinner. Come with me Yellow, we're getting food from Jean."

I fumbled to stand up and yawned again, then asked, "Jean?"

"You'll see," she stretched her arms and then chuckled, "you'll probably like him."

*

Blue perched on one of the counters in the kitchen, her legs swinging in a rhythm.

"The extra cheese too, Jean. You know we love our junky food."

Jean, a man in his forties, simply shook his head at the girl with a smile. He was tall and burly, but the kindness in his eyes contrasted his intimidating physique. "I should just let you make your own food at this time Blue, you're unacceptable."

"Oh you know you love me." Blue waved her hand in amusement at the man.

Jean looked back at me with a pitiful smile, "And who is this? I've never not seen you here without that moody boy."

"Green?" She chuckled, "he's just got a bad expression."

I raised my eyebrows, personally disagreeing with the statement about the boy who seemed intent on belittling me. "I'm Yellow."

"Oh," Jean analysed my face for a brief but nonetheless awkward moment, "Are you the new member of K-Z? None of the recruits have lasted long enough to meet me."

"Careful Jean, don't give her ideas." Blue hopped off the table and moved to the plate of grill cheese sandwiches that Jean was still adding to. She picked one up and quickly forced it into my hands, then took her own and began eating.

I bit into the golden triangle hungrily, then felt the softness of the cheese merge with the crunch of the bread. "This is delicious Jean."

"Thank you Yellow, it's nice to be appreciated." The man pointed his spatula at Blue in accusation.

"I think it's lacking in the spice." Blue shrugged, but that didn't stop her from continuing to eat.

"I'll turn you into spice." Jean grumbled.

I realised how hungry I was as the size of the bread grew smaller, "How did you two become close?"

"Now that is an interesting question with a long answer, but if you don't mind I'm going to squeeze in some sleep," the chef placed a dish cover over the plate of grilled cheeses, "Good morning."

I giggled as he walked away, "Have a nice sleep."

"You're the best Jean." Blue waved before lifting the dish open again, "Want another?"

"Thanks." I gratefully took a bite then looked back at her expectantly for answers.

"What?" Blue narrowed her eyes before remembering what I had ask, she laughed and shook her head, "No way am I telling you."

"It was just a question." I looked down in disappointment, some part of me was hoping Blue would accept me first.

"It's personal and unless you're ready to do a background exchange, my lips are sealed."

I swallowed another bite and looked back at her, it was these conversations I always shied away from, but I knew answers came with a price.

And personal knowledge only brought people closer. At least, I hoped.

"Okay," I nodded my head and then pushed myself upwards to sit next to her, "But this knowledge stays between us."

"I did not expect that," Blue looked at me and I automatically gulped at how close she was. She could probably see all the crumbs on my face and how messy my hair was, not to mention my worsening eye bags. "We'll take turns, me first."

I nodded and began to twiddle with my thumbs.

"Who forced you to come to the DAPP?"

It definitely wasn't poor uncle, "My parents."

Blue nodded and I hastily asked, "When did you join K-Z?"

"The same time it was created, five years ago."

"Wow," I looked at her thoughtfully, "We could have joined at the same time."

"What?" Blue snapped her head and glared, "What do you mean?"

I chewed my lip nervously, "My parents wanted me to be raised by the DAPP. I wasn't, only because my uncle took me under his wing. Why did you join K-Z?"

Blue sighed, "I was here beforehand and trained to perfection out of hobby, it made sense."

She looked back at me as I felt the tension increase, "Who are your parents, Yellow?"

I felt a shard of skin from my lips tear under my teeth, "Burgundy and Alexander del bosque Verde."

Blue, who had been swaying to herself during our information exchange, froze. "Shut up."

I traced a flower pattern onto the surface below me and didn't respond. "Who are your parents, Blue?"

"Yellow you cannot just reveal that and carry on like normal." Blue slapped her hand over my imaginary flower, "you're the child that the famous couple practically abandoned for their work?"

I frowned at her choice of words and whispered, "you don't need to rub it in."

"Sorry, I'm just in shock." Blue was staring at my face as if it were the latest crime scene.

I shrugged and covered a yawn, "So, who are your parents?"

"I don't know, honestly. I do know they're dead like yours, probably not in the same way."

Blue's expression was full of curiosity now, "Did your parents ever visit you?"

"No. My uncle stopped them from keeping me here, he said that there was no point of them visiting me unless they had the guts to be committed. I think he was afraid of me becoming attached to them."

"Harsh, but very true," the girl looked down as a call from Green lit up her screen, she ended it and looked back at me, "I am so shocked at you, Yellow."

"What happened in your childhood?" I peered at her, knowing my secrets had been spilled amongst a sealed vessel.

"Finally, you asked the juicy question." Blue stretched her arms and then smiled sadly, "I was kidnapped. You're probably too young to know about it, but we were a famous case for the DAPP. Your parents actually solved it."

My attention peaked now; this was the first time Blue looked completely honest.

"A group of children, including Silver and I, were kidnapped at a very young ages. I think I was five, but I remember spending a section of my life captured." She didn't look comfortable anymore, "I'm not going to repeat the unnecessary details. The DAPP eventually caught the masked man, who had been holding us captive, after Silver and I escaped. Most of us were returned and reunited, but Silver's dad had disappeared and my parents were dead."

"Where did you go?" I broke the question pattern and slapped my forehead, "Oops."

"I don't know why, but I didn't want to build an entire relationship again. I was a stubborn girl, but I was smart too. I familiarised myself with the department of the DAPP who had been trying to find my parents, then refused to be adopted. Silver and I quickly became... Apprentices? We were young and determined to prove our worth."

"So that's how you've known Jean?"

"Yellow, you are so out of questions," Blue snorted, "but yes."

"That's amazing," I breathed out in shock, "It's like you were made from the DAPP."

"It is," Blue nodded, "Tell me, do you miss your parents?"

I smiled sadly, "I miss the idea of them. It would be impossible to crave the presence of people who were never there. Uncle was enough for me though."

As if she sensed I was about to spiral into a void of bitter nostalgia, Blue smiled, "Parents are overrated, hm?"

I mirrored her facial expression, "Honestly, it's crazy that you probably saw them more than I did. Do you remember anything about them?"

"Not much, I was more familiar with staff like Jean because all the detectives were too busy. They were very respected though, and working in K-Z has earned them a lot of my admiration."

"I wonder what would have happened if I stayed with them," I tried to imagine myself as a child here, rather than Viridian, "We would have started working together in K-Z immediately."

"You know," Blue's eyes lit up as she smirked, "It's like you were always meant to be here."
