Chapter 23: The Coast Is Clear
I'm falling.
Clinging to Pidgeot's rough talon, the two of us plummeted downwards, and the dirty ground beneath us sped closer. I hadn't even hit the ground, yet my body ached.
The irregular beat of my heart scared me more than our loose flight. It was thumping impatiently, as if my adrenaline levels were unprecedented.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
There went the gun, and Red-
"No!"
Dim light blinded me as I jolted awake, my throat clenched dry and body tingling. As I tried to register my surroundings, and the fact that I was alive, a buzzing pain began to brew from my head.
I was in my room. I was back in K-Z. I was safe.
But... What happened?
"Yellow! You're awake."
I winced, turning to my right as I watched ChuChu scamper into my room eagerly.
ChuChu.
Whilst my mind began to regulate, I beamed as she jumped onto me, then squeezed my best friend into a hug. "Oh thank Arceus you're okay, I was so worried you'd never come out of that tree."
"Well, I was stuck... But Red's Aerodactyl found me. He took me with him on the path through Mount Moon, but didn't let me come to the opening just in case."
I smiled, remembering she wasn't around when Red had emerged.
"I'm so grateful to him for that." I murmured, stroking her fur, "But how did I get here?"
"You want a quick summary?"
"Of course, spare the detail please. My head is killing me." I brought a hand to the back of my head, then realised it was wrapped up.
Damn it.
"Well I came up to help Red, Sakura was about to stop him from getting his Poké Balls, so I shocked her-"
"Sakura?" I breathed out in curiosity, propping my pillow up and leaning against it.
ChuChu looked back at me with her snarky expression and I smiled lightly, "Fine, no more interruptions."
"After Sakura was down, Red and Rose battled. It wasn't going too well for him until a Clefairy family helped, one of them was returning a favour."
I raised my eyebrows in interest, Red was really great with Pokémon.
"After that, I shocked Rose to paralyse her. Lance and other aid came at the right moment, while he sorted her out, Red came to your side. I think the Clefable made some sort of Healing Wish, though you've been unconscious until now."
I nodded my head slowly, trying to imagine all the commotion on Mount Moon; we must have disrupted so many Pokémon.
"I can't believe it's over ChuChu, I feel so tense. She planned all of this, and I'm scared she's still watching from somewhere far away."
I bit my lip, remembering how she'd been waiting for me. So quietly and swiftly, like a shadow, she'd kicked me.
"Yellow? Yellow!"
The voice matched his tall figure as he ran through my door, reaching my bed in a matter of seconds.
Red stole my breath away as he halted at a chair I'd just noticed, seated right beside me. His face hovered a few inches away from mine and all I could feel was the warmth from his deep exhalations.
"You're okay." He studied my face for a little longer and then repeated himself, "you're okay."
I smiled, then reached for his hand and gently squeezed it, "Are you telling me that, or yourself?"
Red didn't respond, instead, he touched the bandage around my head with a frown.
"You saved me." The words barely left my lips as I remembered the agonising despair that disappeared when he'd arrived.
"No, you saved me." He looked straight at me, with an earnest expression that only made my throat drier.
Then, he leaned even closer to me.
The sun wasn't pouring over us this time, but when Red's lips lightly grazed over mine, I leaned backwards in shock.
He'd taken me by surprise, and I really wasn't in complete focus. I instantly regretted my decision as confusion spread around his face. Arceus that came from nowhere, but I wanted it too.
"Argh!"
I winced on behalf of Red, then glared at ChuChu, who had just sent a few sparks flying at him.
"Why didn't you tell me she's up! Yellow!"
The stillness between Red and I was disrupted as both Blue and Green burst through the room, the brunette flinging herself towards me in a hug.
"It's so good to see you." I murmured, closing my eyes in comfort as she squeezed me.
"But it's even better to see you." I grinned at Green as he patted my shoulder, not getting much space because of his girlfriend. "How are you feeling?"
"Not too bad, I'm just wondering when I can tear this off." I gestured to my head, and the annoying pressure from the bandage.
"We'll take you to the nurse later." Blue sat on the bottom of my bed, grabbing ChuChu to stroke as Green took my desk chair.
"I have so many questions," I narrowed my eyebrows, "Was the funeral real?"
"Fake, staged by Rose. She intervened with the details, it's actually in a week." Green passed me my phone, which I noticed now had a fat crack on the edge.
"Before we answer your other questions, tell us what happened when you left K-Z. How did Rose find you?" Red asked, not bothering to meet my eyes this time.
I wanted to kick myself for my earlier actions, but focused on my memories.
"Well, I had Pigeot back in his Ball to get through the junction. When I got to Route 5 and released him, she kicked me down. It really took me by surprise, but with a gun to my head there wasn't much I could do."
"That bitch, I could kill her." Blue hissed, and ChuChu warily edged away from the angry girl.
"Anyway, she made me get on Pidgeot and threatened to shoot the both of us if we didn't follow. I wanted ChuChu safe, so I pressed for that and she eventually agreed, using my Pikachu as a portable mailbox." I scowled as I remembered that creep folding her flower, "I really wish I'd brought my own gun. She used her Venomoth to carry her, speeding to Mount Moon with us in front."
I closed my eyes and flinched as the moments became more vivid in my head. "Then, when we reached the peak and were about to descend, she shot Pidgeot's wing. That made the both of us fall."
"That was unnecessary, the little shit!" Green slammed a fist down, and I jolted at the sound.
A sudden guilt began to churn as I remembered his poor Pokémon, and all the blood. "Green, I'm so sorry. I tried so hard to heal him, but it didn't work. How's he doing?"
"Well at least he's better than all those other corpses," he gave me a half smile, then murmured, "Pidgeot probably won't be able to fly or battle for some time, but he'll be okay. He's being treated in Celadon City."
"Thank Arceus." I exhaled in relief, then looked across at the three, "Now can I ask my questions?"
"Shoot." Blue nodded her head.
"Well, I need an answer for the Snorlax in the room. What happened to Rose?" I looked around at them in curiosity, "Please tell me she's gone."
"Well she's officially not our problem anymore." Red murmured quietly.
"Although you were lucky enough to sleep through all of the report writing. Blue and I managed to finish the file." Green raised his eyebrows at me, "Lance is still a bit pissed off we let you go. I told you it wasn't a good idea."
"Yeah I get it," I sighed, "You were right."
"Anyway, that psycho is detained in Gringey City right now, she's going to have a court hearing soon." Blue lay her head down on my bed, leaning against my feet with a dramatic sigh. "I wish that idiot Red would've just waited for us to come."
"Sorry for the hundredth time, Blue," Red rolled his eyes, not sounding the slightest bit apologetic, "I couldn't wait knowing Rose had Yellow."
I smiled to myself at his words, he did care. ChuChu met my eyes, and I knew we were sharing the exact same thought.
"Oh," Green clicked his finger, "And that Venusaur was taken away from her, like her other Pokémon. They're probably going to be at the reserve in Fuchsia City, but that depends on if they're peaceful enough."
"Better than being with Rose." I felt sorry for her team, living with someone so cruel must have worsened them.
"She'll get what she deserves. A title of being a serial killer, probably charged with second degree murder, and a shit ton of other crimes. Theft, unauthorised conduct of weapons and even hacking." Blue raised her fingers into the air in accordance with her list.
"So this is it," I closed my eyes and tried my best to rid my body of all the tension, "case closed?"
The others all laughed in response and Red murmured, "Not exactly."
~
Evening had settled in, warm colours leaking into darker shades. The department had frozen still, it was like the closed case had sealed us into a relaxed state.
"I don't know," Yellow sighed as I patted a little glitter into the corner of her eyes, "Everything happened so fast and now it all seems unreal."
"Well let's just thank Arceus it's all over, that was the worst case we've ever been assigned." I groaned and lay back in my chair, then admired the makeup I'd put on the girl. "I'm so glad we're having this celebration."
Being one of our rare S-Cases, our unit was holding a small gathering to celebrate the final closure. It was pretty much an excuse for our seniors to have a good drink, not that I was complaining. I loved any sort of celebration, and seeing Silver was another benefit.
"So, before we get going," I stood up and smirked at the blonde, "You haven't told me about your little romance."
"Urgh," Yellow leaned back on her chair, "I don't even know what to do Blue."
"C'mon, he hasn't exactly hidden his feelings. Losing you put Red's emotions into perspective."
"You're right..."
"So, what are you waiting for?"
"I don't know. Before you and Green came to me yesterday, he was about to kiss me." Yellow saw my eyes brighten and shook her head in embarrassed, "I pulled away. Don't get me wrong, I wanted to kiss him, but it was timed all wrong."
I pressed my lips together, then pulled her up, "You know what? While you were unconscious, Red was the one who sat beside you attentively. He wouldn't have even eaten if it wasn't for us. I think it's only right for you to reach out for him this time."
Yellow chewed her lip in thought, then nervously chuckled. "I can't argue against that."
"Perfect," I pulled her opposite my standing mirror, "now one last check."
I patted my straightened bangs down, admiring my khaki green dress. It was cut in a slanted angle, with one side stretching over to reach my knee whilst the other was at my thigh. The spaghetti straps were nice and simple, but I'd jazzed the outfit up with a pair of tassel earrings and gold heels.
Beside my reflection, Yellow leaned her head against my shoulder. Yesterday night we had watched her cut off some of those long blonde locks to tidy up Rose's mess, so now her hair was layered shorter. She was wearing a white off-the-shoulder dress, with the classic bell sleeves that matched her favourite tops. It reached her knees and fluttered in gentle pleats, with specks of bronze that matched her sandals. I'd honestly been surprised she could steadily walk in her heels, they weren't for the weak.
"We look amazing, now let's head out!" I pumped my fist in the air, "ChuChu, you coming?"
The Pikachu warily stared at me; she hated my loud voice. Yellow giggled and then scooped her up into her arms, "Hey, you leave Blue alone."
"I do not appreciate your silent insults, you little mouse." I joked and opened up my room door, revealing two bored boys.
"About time!" Green groaned, grabbing my hand and pulling me to the elevator button.
"Excuse you?" I pouted as we all got in, "Aren't you going to compliment my stunning dress?"
The idiot just smirked and wrapped his arm around my waist, "You compliment yourself enough."
I elbowed him, then looked forward at Red and Yellow, standing beside each other with a clumsy awkwardness - not tense, but not comfy.
The two of us watched in silent entertainment as Red gazed at Yellow, then quietly murmured, "You look great."
Her worried face burst into a blushing smile, and I immediately wanted to kick Red as his hand brushed against Yellow's. Arceus, he was going to take my little Yellow away.
As the door pinged open, I felt Green's voice against my ear.
"How much do you want to bet ChuChu shocks him before he gets an entrance?"
My smile widened as we all walked out, "Let the games begin."
A/N:
