Chapter 13: The Healer

"So you're saying I can't see him?" I shook my head obstinately.

"Miss, you have to understand that he's suffered significant abdominal trauma and has consequently lost a large amount of blood. It's impossible for us to let you in whilst he's in surgery."

I looked up at the doctor, whose face was full of pity as tears welled in my eyes.

"Well what do you expect me to do? I can't leave him here." I stubbornly waved my hand towards the sealed corridor.

"You have to. We'll try to keep you up to date, but there's been a huge influx of casualties that this small hospital can't handle alone. We may have to transport him to a larger branch."

I didn't want to just walk away.

"Thank you," Lance spoke firmly at the relieved woman, who hurriedly walked back down the corridor.

He looked back at me as I wiped my face angrily; this was so unjust. How could those criminals do this?

Uncle is all I have of a family.

"Yellow, there are two things you can do right now," Lance placed his hands on my shoulders as I glumly met his eyes, "you can either continue being an emotional wreck or face the facts and move forward accordingly."

"Facts?" I spluttered, "what facts? My uncle might die and I don't even get a chance to say goodbye."

"There isn't anything you can do apart from leave him in the hands of professionals. What are you going to do now?"

I covered my face with my hands as tears of morbid assumptions fell downwards. "I don't know anymore Lance, I don't know!"

The man sighed and wrapped an arm around my shoulder in an attempt to comfort me, "You need to give him justice. Catch Vespiquen with a new motive."

I didn't respond, because we both knew that thought was already instilled in my mind.

"We've got another problem before we can go back to Saffron."

"What?" I looked up at him in alarm.

"Red's arm was cut by a piece of glass, he's still in the waiting room because the doctors have to prioritise all the emergencies."

I nodded my head and looked down at my torn tights. I'd been lucky Green had protected me, so only a few grazes were troubling my legs. "Is it really bad?"

"He's got it compressed, but the bleeding is still going through. Do you think you could help?"

I bit my lip as we walked back to the waiting room, "I've never healed a human before, they're a lot bigger. But I can definitely try."

"Atta girl," Lance murmured as we approached the three, who were surrounded by dozens of other people, "let's see if I can get you to a more private area to work at."

The others were eyeing me with a cautious concern and when Lance went to talk to the staff in the reception, Blue finally split the silence.

"How's he doing?"

I bit my lip, not wanting to relive the information, "he's in surgery, I can't see him."

I distracted myself from any form of pity by quickly looking at Red's left arm. It was elevated as Green applied pressure to the tightly wrapped bandage that was stained with a gruesome scarlet. He was doing a good job at masking the pain, but there was definitely an air of frustration surrounding his clenched jaw.

"Was it the glass from a light?" I murmured to Blue.

She nodded, "We've changed that bandage at least twice now."

"Finally some good news," Lance announced as he returned, "there's a small room that we can use, come with me you two."

He pointed at Red and I as the boy got up slowly, "What's going on?"

"Yellow is going to heal you."

"Try to," I quickly followed Lance's words and gazed at Red, "I'll try to help."

He nodded his head and we followed Lance's daunting figure into a small room marked with 'Blood tests'. Inside, there was a computer balanced on a desk, a large blue phlebotomy chair, a cabinet that probably contained all sorts of vials and another spare chair. A small sink was also attached to the back, with a dispenser of gloves and paper towels.

I gulped as the reality of the situation hit me, Red had already lost a significant amount of blood and I wasn't exactly trained in any medical profession.

Red moved to the phlebotomy chair as Lance carried the other chair beside him and gestured for me to sit. "Do you need me?"

I bit my lip and then nodded, "Can you raise the arm of the chair to elevate it again, then I need you to loosen the bandage. Let me take a quick glance at the wound."

Time to take control.

I pulled out two pairs of purple gloves, slipping my fingers into mine as Lance squeezed his hands into them. The only thing I was relying on was basic knowledge of healing Pokémon, so I opened the cabinet and scanned across for anything useful.

"Looks like the bleeding has improved compared to before." Lance murmured as he analysed Red, "Are you holding up alright?"

I didn't hear Red's reply as I ran my hand under a tap, collecting some warm water in a jug and then grabbing a small packet of soap.

"Has it stopped?" I placed the things on the counter behind me and moved to the side of Red's arm cautiously.

No big deal, just the fate of Red's arm.

"I think so." Lance moved aside as I eyed the wound, freezing at the gruesome sight.

A majority of the area was painted in deep blood stains that made the sight more graphic. The cut itself was about four inches long and looked as though it was engraved in a deep burgundy colour, with the skin between the jagged incision distraught. Even though the bleeding had come to a stop, it looking ridiculously painful.

It was safe to say I was horrified.

I squeezed my eyes shut, there wasn't time for me to be shocked or nauseous.

"I thought you can't feel human pain" Red's voice probed my eyes back open as he clenched his teeth, "why are you crying?"

"I just don't like seeing you with such a horrible injury." I looked back down at the wound and then rubbed my eyes, today was a series of alarms.

"Hey," He winced and then leaned forward, placing his right hand against my cheek firmly, "I'm fine Yellow, so stop worrying."

I felt my body warm after realising he was waiting for a reply, and still touching me in comfort.

"I don't think you're fine, it looks as if a Ryhorn has attacked you."

"Well you're healing me so there's nothing to worry about." His voice became blurred and the only thing I could sense was the motion of his thumb running down my face.

I couldn't reply when his rough thumb came to a halt at the corner of my lips, the two of us meeting eyes again.

"So what do you need to do Yellow?" Lance interrupted me as I snapped my face away from Red's grip.

"I'm going to clean the area first, can you rotate between the jugs?"

I rinsed the soap in the jug, then soaked the paper towels and gently patted the skin around his cut, stroking away the stains.

"I need to be quick in case it starts bleeding again."

Lance opened a bin as I threw the used materials away, then looked back at what was left of Red's injury.

"How does it feel?"

"The same," He gritted his teeth, "it just looks less worrying now."

"You're sure no glass entered?" I looked back at the two sceptically.

Red nodded his head, "Blue was adamant about using her magnifying glass."

"I'm glad one of you likes looking at blood." Lance muttered, "That girl is psychotic."

I smiled lightly then pointed to the wound, "It would need stitches so this is the part where I see if my powers can help."

Silence embedded the air as I hovered my hands over Red's arm, and the soft hum of energy transferred to my palms. It was similar to aura, with a glowing light emerging in the shape of a sphere. I frowned in concentration and steadied my feet, then tightened the grip of my hands and lowered them very closely to the scar.

My efforts looked like they were going to waste initially, but slowly I began to notice that small segments of his skin were breaching the thick cut.

Under my hands, the skin on his arm began to slowly creep back together.
I looked back at Red and tried to separate the idea of blood from him, I wasn't the one injured but seeing him in pain made me hurt.

"Shit," I snapped my head up as Red closed his eyes and clenched his jaw, "Is it mean to sting like this?"

"Well when your skin is getting stitched back together, what do you expect?" Lance sarcastically replied and I sighed.

There was now a buzzing in my head as I looked over the skin, it looked like a fresh scar but not as reliable. "I think we need another round to be on the safe side, you definitely can't exert any pressure on this though."

"Are you sure you can handle that?" Red narrowed his eyes, "You fainted when you healed Poli and this took up more energy."

"What?" I could feel Lance's eyes glare at me, "Do you want me to take over?"

"No," I shook my head and put my hands into position again, "Healing is my speciality."

*

It was late in the evening when I finally met Lance for dinner; the others had all gone to sleep after we got back to Saffron City.

"I can't lie," I looked down glumly, "Uncle's not doing so great. They told me someone would call if it became critical, but he's not in a state to have visitors."

I stirred around my bowl of pasta as Lance sighed, "In the meantime we can only hope for the best and move on with the case."

"Did you find out anything significant?"

"Well the footage was destroyed half way through, but this time there were only two perpetrators."

"Who was missing?"

"The Gardevoir, Audrey Polazo."

I raised my eyebrows, "Do you think she died?"

"I wouldn't doubt it," Lance ran a hand through his dishevelled hair, "This cold blooded destruction wasn't an accident though."

"You're right," I felt my appetite disappear and offered a forkful of food to ChuChu, "The media were swarming the spot in comparison to the other incidents. It was a lot more publicised."

"Vespiquen intended to cause a social outrage. She provoked it all."

"Why, though? I doubt she's doing this all for the thrill, so it must be strategic."

"I had hoped we could avoid one, but there's no choice now. The case isn't ending anytime soon."

"Avoid what?" I eyed Lance curiously as he finished his can of beer.

"We have to have a press conference."

A/N:
I'm so sorry for the late updates and inactivity, life has been a little hectic lately. I'm in London and the virus has pretty much been spreading in the UK like crazy. For some reason, schools are still open and my college has decided to press on with monthly exams T^T

On that note, I hope you all stay safe (and hygienic) during this time.

Baii for now xx
