Chapter 10: Breaking More than the Ice

"You would have enjoyed that journey if your eyes were open." Red commented, giving me his hand as I jumped off Aerodactyl.

I felt nauseous as my body steadied itself in sand, "That was nothing like the normal Pidgeot."

"You said it." ChuChu mirrored me as she slumped onto the sand and fell in love with the lack of motion.

It wasn't just the odd feeling of Aerodactyl's membrane-like skin that creeped me out. It wasn't the thundering air that had whipped my hair into a catastrophic failure. It was him. Sitting at the front meant I wouldn't have to hold onto Red, but it did mean that Red held onto me as his Pokémon blasted through the sky.

I could still feel the pressure of his hands against my waist and it made me want to shiver.

"Hello?" I swerved my head to look up at him as he waved a hand in front of my face.

I wanted to lock myself up in a room and hide from those taunting eyes. "Yes?"

"I asked what you think of the place, now that you're not just staring at the sand."

I hadn't had time to soak in the warm surrounding but once my eyes absorbed what was around me, I wanted to stay here.

Having heard that Chrysanthemum Island was famous for its unprecedented resort, I'd immediately been unattracted to the popular place. However, what I saw was quite different from my expectations.

The vast area of golden sand was only a border to the beautiful water that rippled strings of foamy aqua. If I squinted, I could see brown fences at a distance that sectioned the ground away from what I assumed was the main resort. Where the sand ended, a series of colourful beach houses were neatly aligned in a row. There were only a few people enjoying the luxurious atmosphere; it gave the entire scene a presence of privacy. I loved it.

"Red," I breathed out in amazement, "It's beautiful!"

I shaded my eyes as a few Hoppip floated above me and through the bright sky.

"All of us used our savings to buy this place two years ago and whenever a case starts to feel confining, we escape."

"It's definitely a good contrast to Saffron City," I met his eyes and felt his contagious smile change the colour of my cheeks.

"Hey! You two!" Blue's voice disrupted about every person here as she and Green approached us.

"Meet the new Parasol girl." Red chuckled at the sight of Green balancing a multitude of different objects, then passed the two their respective Pokè Balls.

"More like slave," Green rolled his eyes as he dropped Blue's things in front of her, "Don't disturb me, I want to sleep."

As he stalked off with his parasol and chair, we looked past him in amusement.

"Still feel bad about not working?" Blue met my eyes with a grin.

She was stunning. Blue wafted with confidence as she craned her neck to look at the distanced people. Her body was like that of a model: tall, toned and balanced.

"Kind of..." I felt both guilt and self-consciousness entwine themselves around me.

"Well we'll do some work in the evening, just empty your mind for a bit."

"She's right," Red yawned, "I'm going to go grab a bite. Yellow, keep an eye on Pika please."

I watched him leave and then looked back at the two Pikachu who were sitting at the end of the sand, sending static shocks to the edges of waves.

"Why don't you get changed? Put on some sun cream and then join me, we can enjoy these Pocky." Blue held up a fun sized pack of my favourite snack.

"That's tempting." I smiled and caught the key she threw to me, "What house is it?"

"The peach."

"Thank you." I grinned to myself whilst moving towards the house, then a sudden thought slammed into my head. I reached into the pocket of my jeans and frantically grabbed my phone to dial a number.

"Uncle!"

"Amarillo, what's wrong?" His familiar voice made me grin, it was like I'd never felt this happy before.

"For once, nothing. I've just been too busy to talk to you, I miss you and that name."

"Ah, I miss you too, I've been looking through your artwork but it's not the same as watching you sketch. Are K-Z treating you better?"

I fumbled to unlock the door as I replied, "I think there's been some recent progress, but not with the case we have. It's so tricky."

It sucked that I couldn't tell him about the actual case for confidentiality. As I closed the door behind me, my eyes roamed around the peaceful rustic setting of the house.

"That's good! Your father used to tell me that whenever he was struggling to solve something, he would pretend to act like the perpetrator. Maybe that will help?"

"Interesting." I murmured, though I doubted that a heartless murderer fell into my preferred role.

"I have to go, there's some business to do in the city, but I hope you call again soon."

"Of course, oh and uncle, try not to get stuck on a boat again." I giggled as I looked around the lounging area that was adjoined to a small kitchen on its right.

"If you insist." He chuckled and ended the call as I walked further in, then looked between two very different rooms.

Whilst one reeked with darkness, the other illuminated in a pastel lilac. Beside the door to my left were the printed letters 'G and R', whilst on my right it said 'B and Y'.

"Wow," I gasped and a warm comforting feeling emerged in my abdomen, "That's me. I'm Y."

It sounded too good to be true until I walked into the simple room and saw a bunk bed. Blue had packed my things while we went to the daycare, which had been worrying, but now I didn't regret it.

She'd already folded my pyjamas onto the side of the bottom bed, and a half-full backpack remained leaning against them. On the bed itself was one of my few summer clothes, a white off-the-shoulder top that looked too gentle to wear. She'd placed a pair of denim shorts that I assumed were hers beneath, and a thin brown belt too. Arceus knew I needed that because my waist wasn't nearly as curvy as hers.

A little note caught my eye and I shook my head in amazement, Blue's kindness was certainly unexpected, but it shone with friendly gestures.

Hey sunshine, welcome to Chrysanthemum. Sorry I kept the top bunk, but the bottom is all yours now. You're a cute weirdo Yellow, I'm starting to like you so watch out! Anyway, welcome to the gang. The guys are idiots so don't expect to hear that from them, but I do love having another girl here.

By the way, you should wear your hair down today, it would look cute.

I smirked to myself as my hands weaved the sections of Yellow's hair together, "So you haven't had a recent boyfriend?"

She twiddled her fingers as I reached for a band, "Romance isn't easily accessible when you're a hermit like me."

"Let's see how long that lasts," I chuckled and looked back at Red, who had released his Poliwrath, "all done!"

"Thank you!"

We both stood up, and as Yellow admired her braided hair in the the reflection of her phone, I turned to watch what the guys were doing.

"Oh, Poli and Scizor, interesting." I grabbed Yellow's hand and pulled her towards the direction as I moved to get a better look.

The girl beside me didn't look too thrilled at the scene, and pulled her hand away from mine, remaining at a distance.

Poli and Red were really close, and didn't even use words to normally communicate in battles. The Water-type began the battle with a shot from his Water Gun.

"Steel Wing." Green calmly ordered.

Scizor, however, dominated with his swift movement and easily dodged the attack. He retaliated with a metallic shine to his body, charging towards Poli with his wings.

Rather than avoiding the damage, Poli jumped towards the Scizor, taking the attack full on. He grappled his opponent and jumped upwards, pointing Scizor to the ground before thrusting him down.

"Nice." I raised my eyebrows, then shielded my face from the sand that had dispersed at the Poliwrath's impact.

Whilst Poli landed, Green called out "Turn direction, Slash!"

Like a bullet, the Scizor swerved to his right before he could hit the sand and darted back up. In a split second he had retaliated against Poli and successfully landed a full blown Slash, causing his opponent to fall backwards.

"False Swipe!" Scizor was already moving in for another attack, and Green's order only fastens his pace as he attacked the Poliwrath that had just started to get back up.

Poli attempted to protect himself with a Dynamic Punch, but having just fallen to the ground, he was unsuccessful and open to the attack.

"Hang in-" Red was cut off by a piercing scream that froze us.

We turned to look at Yellow in shock as she fell to the ground, her legs sprawled out on the sand. Her face was painted white with an expression of horror as she held her head, eyes squeezed shut.

"Stop it!" She opened her eyes and then pointed at Poli, "Can't you feel you're hurting him?"

In all honesty it looked like Yellow was in more pain than the Pokémon. I squatted down to wrap an arm around her, "They're just battling Yellow, it's okay."

"It's not," She shrugged me away from her and stood up, walking towards a very bewildered Poliwrath whilst holding her abdomen, "You can't feel what I feel. It hurts."

I followed her passionate steps and exchanged eye contact with the other two, who were as confused as me. Yellow's face was drenched with tears as she extended a hand to Poliwrath carefully.

It was phenomenal.

The Pokémon, who had been roughed up by his opponent, had grazes across his body. But as Yellow closed her eyes, a soft hue of blue light from her hands began to heal Poli back to normal. I'd never heard of anything like it, let alone witnessed her powers. As her palms hovered, the illuminating light grew like a small magical bubble. The only sound detectable now was Yellow's sharp breathing.

"You're amazing." Red murmured as he stepped beside the girl, getting a closer look at his Pokémon.

ChuChu, who had been asleep until Yellow's scream, now approached her trainer defensively. She scurried to sit beside Yellow's bare feet and looked at her in worry.

Time seemed to move again when Yellow moved her hands away from Poliwrath, who had his eyes closed in a blissful manner. Now that the job was done, she took a wobbly step back, moving her hands to hold her own abdomen.

As I moved closer to her in concern, Yellow released a breathless whimper, then swayed backwards. Red quickly acted to steady her with his hands on her shoulders, but as he did so, the girl fell into his arms.

Unconscious.
