Chapter 16 Stay

Kassidy felt a hand brush her face and blinked her eyes open gasping.

"Hey you're okay." Rogers said softly. Kassidy looked around she was still against the station door.

"What happened?"

"Well love I was hoping you could tell me that." Rogers said and helped her to stand. She went to step forward forgetting she hurt her ankle.

"Ah!" She cried and fell forward Rogers caught her before she fell too far.

"Easy." He said. Kassidy looked back towards the door and shivered.

"What happened out there?" Rogers asked as he helped her sit down. "Where are your things?"

"Gone." Kassidy muttered and winced as he propped her foot up in his lap.

"What were you running from?" Rogers asked as he untied her shoe and pushed her pant leg up to look at the swelling on her ankle.

"Um.. there were these men. They knew my name and one of them grabbed me but I got away I slipped out of my jacket and ran and then.. I threw my backpack down and one of them tripped. but the other one grabbed my hair and pulled me backwards he dragged me a little ways through a puddle. Like.. what a douche." Kassidy sighed. "I dug my fingers into his hand until he let go and I got up and started running again and stepped wrong and hurt my ankle. and then somehow I got here." Kassidy said looking back over her shoulder.

"Hey, you are safe here." Rogers said trying to reassure her. "Did you see what they looked like?"

"I don't remember. I was mostly focused on running from them." Kassidy said. "Ow!" She yelped as Rogers touched her ankle.

"I'll be right back I'm going to get you some ice." Rogers said and stood up putting her foot in the chair he was sitting in and walked out of the room. Kassidy slowly stood and hobbled around to his desk and over to his computer to see if he had any more information on Will.

"What are you doing?" Rogers asked as he came back in the room with an ice pack. Kassidy jumped.

"Nothing!" She said. Rogers raised an eyebrow at her.

"Try again." He said.

"I was looking to see if you found more stuff on Will." Kassidy shrugged.

"Well, I haven't and if I did, I would have told you. Sit." He said. Kassidy sighed and hopped back over to her chair and sat down while Rogers put the ice pack over her ankle.

"Do you think this has anything to do with Will?" Kassidy asked. Rogers knew it had to it was the only thing that made sense. He sighed.

"I don't know, so until we figure it out, you are officially under police protection." He smirked. "You'll be staying with me."

"I could stay with Roni. She has a bat." Kassidy said.

"Roni may be good with a bat, but I can keep you safer. If you let me." Rogers said. Kassidy looked back towards the door.

"You got lucky this time. but now you are hurt you wont get away quite so easily." Rogers said. Kassidy looked back at him and nodded.

"Okay. I'll try." She said and half smiled.

"Good." He said returning her smile.

Rogers parked his car outside the house and looked over at Kassidy in the passangers seat.

"You ready?" He asked. Kassidy nodded

"Yeah." She said though she looked really unsure.

"Okay, stay there. I'll come around and help you out." Rogers said and got out of the car, however Kassidy was already trying to get out on her own.

"So Stubborn." Rogers sighed. "Here. Let me, its cold and raining." He said and scooped her up making her yelp in surprise as he carried her into the house.

"You are.. uh..quite strong detective." Kassidy said and blushed a little.

"Aye. Well, there's really nothing to you. You are 5'3 and live off of pop-tarts and sarcasm." He chuckled. She smiled at him not really caring that he hadn't put her down yet. He walked over to the kitchen table and pulled a chair out with his foot and set her down.

"I'm going to get you something less.. wet to wear." He said and patted the chair next to her. "Keep that foot up."

"Yes Doctor." Kassidy smirked and put her foot in the chair. Rogers walked away and returned with some clothes for her and put them on the table.

"Until we can get you some new clothes these will work since you'll be staying a while you should probably use the spare bedroom. It will give you more privacy than the couch." Kassidy nodded.

"Sure." She said.

"Any food allergies I should know about?" He asked. Kassidy shook her head.

"Nope. I guess I'm going to go shower and change." She said

"Alright. I'll start dinner. Is there anything you wont eat?" He asked.

"Nah, I'm cool with anything." Kassidy smiled and got up and picked the clothes up and hobbled to the bathroom. She started the shower and peeled off her wet and muddy clothes. She looked in the mirror and brushed her fingers over the bruising on her upper arm were she was grabbed earlier and sighed. It was way too close of a call for her.

"What the hell did you do Will?" She muttered to herself before stepping into the hot shower wincing a little as she put pressure on her injured foot. Once out of the shower she dried off and put on the clothes Rogers has pulled out for her which was a pair of sweats and a tee shirt. She pulled the drawstring on the pants as tight as they would go and tied it before pushing the legs up a bit. She fluffed the towel through her blonde hair and tried to finger her way through her tangled curls. she walked out of the bathroom and put her clothes in the washing machine and started it before opening the door to the spare bedroom and checking it out. There was a bed, and a dresser in the room along with a small desk. She walked over to the window and pulled the curtains back watching the rain come down outside jumping backwards a little at the crash of thunder She felt two hands on her shoulders steadying her. she spun around and sighed.

"Rogers." She said.

"Well, who else would it have been?" He chuckled.

"I don't know.." Kassidy said and shrugged.

"I didn't mean to startle you. I just wanted to check on you. I know the room isn't much."

"No. its fine, its a room. I..haven't had a room in nearly 4 years." Kassidy said and half smiled.

"Yeah." Rogers said and scratched behind his ear. "Well..dinner is ready." He said.

"Good, I am starving." Kassidy said and limped along to the table. She sat down and propped her foot up in the chair next to her. Rogers put a plate of some form a pasta in front of her.

"You are probably going to want to stay off that foot as much as possible for a couple of days." He said.

"I'll try. I don't like staying still very long." Kassidy smirked.

"I know." He chuckled. Kassidy took a bite of the pasta.

"Oh. Wow. Detective Doctor can also cook." She said and shoved more into her mouth.

"Well, it's no toasted strawberry pop-tart, but I do try." He grinned.

After dinner Kassidy hobbled over to the bookshelf beside the TV and looked at his collection.

"You like to read?" Rogers asked.

"Yeah. Well, I did. I don't really read much now." She replied with a shrug.

"Well, if you see something that interests you, help yourself." Rogers said. Kassidy smiled and picked out a book and sat down next to him on the couch. She peeked at the sketch he was working on.

"You can draw too." She said quietly

What else can this guy do?

"I guess so." He chuckled.

"You guess? It's better than the stick figures I do that's for sure." Kassidy said.

"It's just a hobby. Do you have any?"

"Any what?" Kassidy asked.

"Hobbies."

"I like to write." Kassidy shrugged. "Well. I did, but now my journal is in the hands of whoever it was who tried to take me.. as is everything else I own." Kassidy muttered.

"We'll get it back. Don't worry." Rogers smiled and stood up. "I think I'm going to turn in for the night if you need anything my room is right down the hall from yours." He said.

Kassidy nodded.

"Thanks, Detective." She smiled.

Rogers woke up the next morning and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and got up and walked to his dresser pulling out clothes for the day and walking to the bathroom yawning. He peeled off his sleep clothes and leaned over and started the shower and jumped at the startled squeak coming from the bathtub. He pulled back the shower curtain and watched Kassidy scramble to get out of the pouring water He shut off the shower.

"Jesus Christ Kassidy what are you doing sleeping in the bathtub??" He asked and quickly hid his exposed lower half with the shower curtain as Kassidy got out.

"Don't worry detective, I've seen it before." She smirked.

"What?!"

"I peeked when I stole your clothes that day." She shrugged.

"Jesus.." He sighed. "Out!" He said and shooed her out of the bathroom. Kassidy giggled at the crimson shade his face took as she was pushed out of the bathroom and the door was shut.

When Rogers was done in the shower and dressed, he walked out and narrowed his eyes at Kassidy who had a big grin on her face while he walked to the kitchen to start breakfast.

"Not a word Cole." He muttered.

"Sure thing Detective Chest hair." She grinned.

"Wanna tell me why you were sleeping in my bathtub?" He asked.

"I couldn't sleep in the bed. To be fair I'm used to sleeping on sidewalks the only time I've slept in a bed in the past 4 years..someone was with me." Kassidy shrugged. Rogers sighed It was something they were both going to have to adjust to.

"How do you like your eggs?" He asked

"Scrambled." Kassidy answered. "Need help?"

"Nope, I got it besides you need to stay off that foot." He said.

"What's on your agenda today?" Kassidy asked.

"Well, after breakfast I've gotta go to work. I'm going to start questioning people to see if anyone saw what happened yesterday."

"Oh. Well.. I can co-"

"You are staying here. I'd rather you not be out there roaming, you are hurt and you can't get away as quickly."

"What am I supposed to do here all day?" Kassidy asked.

"Well you can watch TV, I found a notebook and some pencils if you want to write you can do anything you want just stay here and don't burn my house down." He smirked.

"Fine." Kassidy sighed.

"She actually stayed?..She was there when you woke up?" Roni asked Rogers as he sat down in the bar taking a break from asking people questions.

"Yep. Had breakfast with her and everything." Rogers smirked.

"Wow." Roni said. "Gotta admit, I didn't even think almost getting kidnapped would stop her from leaving." Roni laughed. "She doesn't like to stay."

"Now if I could just get her to actually sleep in the bed we'd be getting somewhere." Rogers said. "She slept in my bathtub which made for an incredibly awkward morning." He said blushing a little.

"I'm not even going to ask." Roni smirked. "It's going to be an adjustment for her. Just be patient but her staying as long as she has is a big step for her so you are doing something right. She trusts you. I've known her for years and she still won't stay with me."

"Think she'll still be there when I get back?" Rogers asked.

"I think so." Roni smiled. "So. You know she thinks you are hiding things about Will from her right?" Roni asked and put her hands on her hips. "Are you?"

"For good reason." Rogers sighed. "The people who grabbed her are people Will work for. He's done something to piss them off."

"And how do you know this?" Roni asked.

"Will told me."

"You saw him??" Roni asked.

"Yes. He's probably still lurking around somewhere He was trying to stay away from Kassidy to keep her out of danger, but apparently that didn't work. He wanted me to take Kassidy out of town. Maybe I should have listened."

"No. Kassidy doesn't know anyone outside of seattle, Everyone here is all she has and there is no way you would talk her out of leaving." Roni said.

"What about family? She doesn't have family out there anywhere?" Rogers asked. "Before she burned my file on her I read about a brother. Sam?"

"I don't know much about her family. She doesn't talk about them Detective."

"I'm just trying to figure out options if things get worse." Rogers said and ran a hand through his hair. "If you know anything.. Anything at all."

"I don't. If I did I would tell you." Roni said. "Maybe ask Will. He knows more about her than anyone else." Roni suggested.

"Well, I would but I haven't kept in contact with him since the day I found him."

"Okay. Maybe ask Kassidy." Roni said.

"I'd like to not get stabbed." Rogers laughed.

"She wouldn't stab you." Roni smirked. "She might punch you though. Seriously though, just ask her." Roni shrugged.

Rogers walked through the front door and set a Pizza on the counter and looked around.

"Kass?" He called out.

No answer. He walked down the hallway.

"Kass?" He called again. Kassidy popped out of the closet at him.

"Boo!" She screamed.

"Jesus!" Rogers shouted and jumped backwards.

"Did I scare you?" She asked and laughed.

"Only because I thought you had left."

"Nah. you're stuck with me for a little while Rogers." She smirked and hobbled back to the couch.

"How's your ankle?" Rogers asked and walked over and sat beside her trying to calm his heart rate. She was clearly trying to kill him.

"Much better today. I think by tomorrow It will be good to go and then maybe I can leav-"

"Not on your own." Rogers said. Kassidy sat back and groaned.

"But I was so bored!"

"You're creative you will find something to do." Rogers chuckled. "I just don't want you getting hurt and right now it's not safe."

"Do I smell Pizza?" Kassidy asked.

"It's on the counter." Rogers laughed. Kassidy got up and limped over to the counter and opened the pizza box and took a slice and put it on a paper plate and sat down at the table Rogers joined her.

"So.. I was thinking. You know incase things take a turn for the worst and I need to get you some place safer..."

"You mean Roni's?" Kassidy asked.

"No.. I mean out of Seattle."

"Why would I leave Seattle?" Kassidy asked.

"Just incase.. Is there someone outside of Seattle you know?"

Kassidy shook her head. "No." She said quietly.

"I remember reading about..a brother." I said.

"I..have no one Rogers." Kassidy looked down at her plate.

"I'm just trying to figure out where to take you if things get worse." Rogers said. "I Just figured if your family is out there.. if you don't know where they are I can help you find them."

"I know exactly where they are." Kassidy said.

"Have you tried to reach out to them?" Rogers asked.

"No." Kassidy said and took a bite out of the pizza.

"Are they not worried about you?" Rogers asked.

"No." Kassidy said again.

"How can you be so sure?"

"Because they're dead." Kassidy said and got up from the table and walked into her room.
