Chapter 13 Protect
Rogers walked into Roni's after receiving an SOS text message from her, slightly confused that everything seemed fine. He approached the bar.
"I got your text. What's going on?" He asked. Roni gestured for him to walk around the bar, so he did. He looked down at Kassidy sitting on the floor holding a phone to her ear
"Pick up. pick up. pick up.." She mumbled and then sighed out of frustration and shook the phone.
"Your phone is broken!" She yelled at Roni and quickly punched in a phone number and held it to her ear again
"Pick up Will.." She muttered.
"What is she doing?" Rogers asked.
"I don't know. She got a call from Will about 20 minutes ago and she's been like this since." Roni sighed. "What ever he said to her on the phone wasn't good, because she has been a total spaz."
"Okay, so why did you call me?" Rogers asked "You know her more than I do."
"Yeah I do, but you have a way of getting through to her. and I kind of need my phone back." Roni said. Rogers sighed and crouched down to Kassidy as she was raising the phone to her ear again. He put his hand over it and lowered it.
"I don't think he's picking up love." he said.
"He has to. He can't just call like that." Kassidy said.
"What did he say?" Rogers asked.
"I don't know. he kept breaking up something about Seattle, and danger and then he said he had to go and I heard someone yelling and then the phone went dead. What if something happened to him?" She asked and stood up panicking and pacing the phone started ringing in her hands She answered it.
"Will?!" She asked. and then sighed. "You want a cheeseburger go to McDonalds!" She spat in the phone and hung up. Roni gave Rogers a 'Do something' Look.
"Kassidy, why don't you give me the phone number Will used to call the bar, and then you and I can go to the station and try to trace it to see where he may have been calling from. Yea?" He had handled hostage situations before, so talking Kassidy Cole out of a panic attack seemed easy enough.
"Well what if he calls?" Kassidy asked.
"Then I will call you, Go with Rogers, it will help more than standing here screaming at my call in customers." Roni said. Kassidy nodded.
"Okay." She said and handed Roni back the phone.
Kassidy rolled a pen back and forth between her hands on Detective Rogers desk while he was trying to trace where the phone call came from.
"Stop fidgeting." Rogers sighed and took the pen away.
"Did you find anything?" Kassidy asked.
"No, its only been 5 minutes since the last time you asked." Rogers said.
"Oh." Kassidy sighed and tapped her fingers on the desk.
"Bloody hell.." Rogers muttered and looked up at Kassidy. "I understand you are anxious, and you are worried but I need to focus. Why don't you go and get some coffee from the Lounge?"
"Sure." Kassidy said and stood up. "You want some?" She asked.
"Please." He smiled. Kassidy walked away to go and get the coffee. Rogers continued trying to trace the number and finally got a ping.
"Son of a bitch.." He muttered and put the coordinates in his phone and stood up. Kassidy walked back into his office with the coffee
"Hey. Where are you going?" She asked.
"I got a hit on the phone. Its nearby." He said.
"Will is here??" Kassidy asked.
"I think so. I'm going to find out."
"Well, I'll come with you." Kassidy said.
"No, you stay here. I don't know what I am walking into." Rogers said.
"But.. its Will. I can help." Kassidy said. Rogers sighed and put his hands on her shoulders.
"I'm not about to put you in danger. Stay here, I will be right back." He said. Kassidy sighed and plopped down in his office chair and Rogers left the station.
Kassidy looked at Rogers computer screen at the location of the phone. She knew exactly where this was. He wasn't putting her in danger if she walked into it freely. Right?
Rogers had parked his car and got out starting to look for any signs of Will on foot he dialed the phone number and listened and followed the sound of a ring tone until he found a partially smashed burner flip phone. He picked it up carefully making sure not to damage any prints that might be on it before putting it into a zip lock bag. Something rattled just ahead of him and he pulled his gun from the holster walking cautiously towards the noise and that's when he saw someone run.
"Hey!" He shouted and chased after the man "Stop!" He followed the man and got close enough to knock him down.
"Bloody hell!" The man shouted and rolled over "Did you have to go and do that?" Rogers sighed.
"Scarlet." He said keeping his gun pointed at him. "What have you been up to?" Rogers asked.
"Oh, you know. Business as usual." Will said and sat up. Rogers stepped forward with his gun.
"Easy. Put the gun away Detective."
"No, I don't think so. What game are you playing?"
"I'm not playing a game mate. Where is Kassidy?"
"I left her at the station. How long have you been here?"
"A couple weeks." Will replied. "And if you think shes staying at the station you're a bloody idiot. Tell me Detective, did you manage to close your computer after you tracked the burner phone?"
Rogers cursed to himself.
"Right. So, I'm going to go before she gets here." Will said.
"Why are you hiding from her? Do you have any idea what you've done to her?" Rogers asked.
"I never wanted to, but I was told that if I didn't leave her, that she would get hurt."
"Who told you that?" Rogers asked.
"My boss." Will replied.
"And that is?"
"I can't tell you."
"Fine, than you can come with me." Rogers said and reached for his handcuffs.
"No. I can't be anywhere near Kassidy." Will said.
"Why not?"
"Because they are looking for her. I've pissed them off and they want to get back at me and they know that I don't give a bloody damn about anything else besides her."
"Who?" Rogers asked again.
"I need to go. You take Kassidy and you get her the hell out of here Okay?" Will asked.
"Who is after her?" Rogers demanded.
There was a sudden rustling in the gravel behind Rogers.
"I wasn't here. understood?" Will asked before taking off. Rogers spun around with his gun.
Kassidy jumped back with her hands up.
"God Damnit Kassidy." Rogers sighed and put his gun away. "I told you to stay at the station. You could have gotten hurt!"
"I can take care of myself Detective I have for years." Kassidy smiled and lowered her hands. "What's that?" She asked pointing to the evidence bag tucked under Rogers arm.
"Its the burner phone Will was using."
"Did you find him?" Kassidy asked. Rogers didn't want to lie to her, but if her safety was on the line he had no choice.
"No love, Sorry. If he was here he's not anymore." Rogers lied and felt a pang of guilt as her eyes welled.
"Come on, lets go back and keep digging yeah?" He asked and put an arm around her shoulders leading her back to his car.
