Epilogue
"Oh, not yet," Sirius whispers as he gently stops a little EH.
I sit on a rock near them while they stalk a rabbit behind bushes.
"Right. I must wait for its gaze to drop," my little son whispers enthusiastically.
He is perfect. He looks like me but has all the features of an EH, with beautiful green eyes like his father's.
"You see?" Sirius tells him. "If you fail now, don't worry. It will go to the lake, and you can chase it. Remember, always downwind. Can you feel it?"
My little one looks up at the sky and closes his eyes, feeling the breeze blow against him. He looks back at the animal, entirely focused; he will hunt down the rabbit. He is a fearsome little two-year-old predator with the human charisma and the strength and cunning of an EH.
He advances slowly without causing any noise, going to meet the poor animal. He squats a foot away and jumps. The rabbit manages to escape from its tiny claws and begins the chase towards the lake.
He is out of sight a bit, but Sirius is aware of his position. He approaches me with a beautiful smile.
"Well, if we're lucky, we could eat rabbit later, too," he says, feeling proud.
"Sure. I should have guessed you would teach him to hunt rabbit, one of your favorites," I murmur as I wrap my arms around his neck.
He presses me against his body, keeping his mischievous smile.
"You like it too, I know... Since I had to go out at two in the morning to hunt one because you were craving it."
My husband never wavered when I asked him for something, much less while pregnant. He is also an excellent cook when it comes to meat, which is lucky for me since my cravings revolve around that.
"I'll eat without complaining if you promise to let me eat you at night," I whisper barely.
He kisses me, and I return it with all the love that floods me for him.
It took us a couple of tries, but we finally succeeded. I was scared when I told Sirius about my pregnancy, but he was too happy and helped clear my fears. He had faith that everything would work out, and he asked me to focus on that, and I did so.
Our little one is the first of his kind. Marcus deduced that the evolved genes were dominant over those of humans, so if one day they all intersect, the human characteristics will remain in the past to give way to the new: evolved humans, who are perfect. This is the beginning of a new age.
"Whoops! I didn't see anything," exclaims my son.
We turn to see. He holds the rabbit in one hand while he covers his eyes with the other. I smile and move closer to him.
"Easy, you know..."
"No word of this to my friends," he completes.
I have decided to live with Sirius in his city, in a lovely country house, connected with nature, as it should have always been. I don't want my son to grow up close to human vices and perversions.
The little boy starts to kiss my face, and I can't help but laugh.
"Dad says that I can give you kisses," he announces happily.
"Of course."
I kiss his forehead and hug him tight.
"Ready? Come on, Leo," my husband says as he takes his hand.
The constellation Leo. A name both human and evolved.
Without difficulty, Sirius picks him up off the ground, sits him on his shoulders, and gently takes my hand to go home.
Upon arrival, the door is open. Sirius smiles, and I can see that Leo does too.
"Surprise!" screams Rosy, rushing out to greet us.
She hugs me like always and jumps. She takes my hand and pulls me inside the house—Sirius's parents, Marcus, Acrux, Max, Ursa, and the twins Rigel and Deneb are there. Everything is decorated, and there is a huge cake on the table.
"Lion!" exclaims Max.
Sirius takes Leo off his shoulders, grabs his hands, and the little boy runs up to Max.
"My name is Leo, Uncle Max."
"Bah, it's the same. Didn't your mother tell you?"
"Happy birthday, little Leo," says Rosy as she hugs him against her chest.
Sirius puts an arm around me while the others come over to say hello to our son, who is turning two years old.
"Don't crush the child," Acrux reproaches Rosy. "The others haven't greeted him yet."
"Aunt Rosy, I caught a rabbit!" Leo shows her, and she receives it, laughing nervously and almost horrified.
Marcus takes advantage of Rosy's bewilderment to push her away and examine my son's eyes with a small flashlight.
"Marcus," I accuse him.
"Oh, please give me a second. I want to see how his reflections go."
Acrux pushes him away smoothly as he smiles.
"Leo will be a heartbreaker when his uncles teach him the art of seduction."
"Don't even think about it," Sirius threatens him.
I can't help laughing.
"Well, let's eat!" says Max. "Leave the child. Move on, move on, I'm hungry..." He approaches Ursa. "I could get you some beef roast if you like."
She gives him a sideways glance.
"As you like, it doesn't matter," she answers.
Max never tires of seducing her even though she is harder to crack than a stone.
"Did you say roasted beef?" the twins ask in unison.
"Hey, not for you!" Max reproaches them.
The four have become almost inseparable.
Sirius walks up to me, kisses my hand, and winks at me.
"You'll have to wait for everyone to leave so you can eat me," he whispers. "Can you bear it?" He kisses my hand again.
"I'll be able," I whisper back. "The reward is worth it."
He approaches with a sublime smile, allowing me to delight in his aroma. It doesn't matter if they see us. Everyone already knows how we are. I thought he would kiss me, but he didn't. He turns away while his feline eyes flash playfully.
"I'll look forward to it," he purrs.
He heads off to help his mom hand out the cake, and I follow him a few seconds after I get out of the trance, in which he leaves me with his charm. I realize that he has left a piece of paper in my hand.
"See you later, under the pink tree."
I smile. We have brought his favorite tree to our garden, a very special place where we spend pleasant moments of tranquility.
He, as always, is my temptation. He has learned to drive me crazy with just the touch, and he gives me body and soul in every interaction, every kiss, every waltz, always, day by day. And, of course, I don't hesitate to reciprocate.
After everyone is distracted and eating, I stop seeing him and head to the garden. Indeed, there he is, waiting for me with his back leaning against the trunk of that tree.
I approach smiling and hang around his neck to lose myself in his feline eyes. That alone is enough to tell him how much I love him. He presses me against his body, and we merge into a sweet kiss.
