Secrets
Life. What a strange way to word everything that happened all around us. I always thought life was difficult, problematic, and never any fun. Especially after learning what I now knew about my childhood. But this new information only proves that life was even worse for me then, let alone how I feel about it now. Just the thought of how things were when I was younger made me shudder, barely able to put it all in place in my head. But my mother told me we were forced to be part of multiple experiments, as if we were guinea pigs sworn to make our world a better place.
Better wasn't the right word for it. Every experiment I took part of only made it all fall apart, yet the ones who I now call my enemies–after they shunned me away, forcing me to leave my family as if it was all some kind of joke–did their best to keep it all going. No matter how much it broke us, they just had to continue to try.
It took quite some time before I found out what truly happened. My family did their best to hide it all from me, but they should've known better. I knew there were secrets and I was going to find it all out. And of course, after multiple getaways and sneaking around, I did. Afterward, I made my family answer any and all questions I had about what I learned. Though it haunted me since the day I left.
As a child, we had to wear these insanely bulky helmets with wires attached to our brains. We were forced to sit there, without saying a single word, as they transmitted as much information as they could to their machines. Maybe that was how I learned to become so patient. Being so young, I'm sure I thought it was just for fun. Now I know they did this to us in order to break us down. Break us to the point where they created robots who were built on our own personalities. Each robot started to take over when I was forced to leave. Every day the robot would be standing there instead of someone's own child, replacing them as if they were never there. Luckily I caught onto this before it started happening to me.
This only meant that I couldn't stay in one place for long. Sand hit my feet as I walked, dragging it through my toes. My tan skin only got better every moment the sun hit my body. Smoke rose up into the light blue sky, signaling that my camp was close. Running now, I knew I needed to pack up quick. My enemies weren't that far behind me. Though I escaped once, I wasn't so sure that it would happen again. Sweat beaded down my forehead, my feet doing their best to catch up. After what seemed like an eternity, I made it, taking a quick second to wipe the sweat away.
My dark green tent blew in the wind as I undid the pegs quickly, careful to fold it up and stuff it in my bag. Grabbing my water and the snacks I left inside it, I took a bite of one of the bars. It wasn't much, but it'd give me a little bit of protein for a while. Then, I rolled up my sleeping bag and placed it inside my backpack, swinging it onto my shoulders. The weight was heavy on my back, but I had no other choice. I took one last look at the fire I built for myself to keep me warm on the cold nights. There wasn't enough time to put it out even though it would certainly bring them to my trail from the smoke. All I could hope for was rain. But that didn't happen often here.
With a sigh, I looked away and continued on my journey. They may have forced me to leave my family and everything I knew behind me, but they shouldn't doubt me. I trained for this. Finding them would be no easy battle, yet running away would be too easy. Going after them became my specialty. They chose the wrong person to mess with. I would find them. Just like I found out every one of their secrets.
