Chapter 18
Song: The Night We Met by Lord Huron
---------------------------------------------------
Audrey's P.O.V
The town fair was being held this Saturday and I really wanted to go.
Today was Thursday, a busy day for the market, even early in the morning. I turn to the clock and read the time. 5:45am, 15 minutes until my shift was over.
I try to concentrate but I feel my eyes start to wander, not focusing on my job as a cashier and instead, searching for a certain blue-eyed boy.
My eyes rake through the customers, searching all throughout the store until they spot him. There stood Tyler in the far right corner, his apron hanging loosely against his chest and his hair in a perfect mess. I watch as he stocks the shelves with canned beans as he carelessly flexes his arm muscles when he does so.
"Solo!" I call over from my register, ignoring the weird looks I get from people who were waiting in my lane. I see him go rigid for a second before continuing to stock the shelves. He must not have heard me. I quickly grab the speaker from my register and slowly speak into it,
"Solo Williams, please report to lane two." I drawl in a fake British accent while waving him over with my one free hand. Tyler still doesn't pay me any attention and I frown in annoyance. "Solooo," I try again, this time a bit louder. Tyler lazily turns and looks at me before rolling his eyes and continuing to stock the shelves. For some reason, Tyler was being unusually cold to me. He was always a bit cold, but that was normally a playful cold. Something about today seemed different.
I hated it.
I place a closed sign on my register, causing a few people who had been waiting in my lane to mutter angrily. I give them apologetic smiles before picking my way through the crowds of customers and skipping over to Tyler. I walk up behind him and place a hand on his shoulder. He had really nice shoulders.
"Solo?" Tyler turns around, his eyes already narrowed. He sighs a long breath before lazily answering me,"What?"
"Wanna go to the fair with me?"
"No." He says, Shrugging my hand off and turning around, placing another can of beans on the shelf. I stand there for a moment hoping he would turn around and say something like, 'Of course I'll go with you, my Darling! I love spending time with you!' and then he would scoop me up in his arms and spin me around while a Mariachi band played behind us. I shake my head from my daydream and frown in disappointment when I quickly look behind me and notice that there aren't any Mariachi bands.
"Please?" I ask my shoulders dropping.
"No."
"Why?" I ask, suddenly feeling like a very stupid little girl. He sighs and turns around, looking at me straight in the eyes.
"Because I don't like you. We are not friends." He says harshly. I swallow, staring at him for a good minute before finally being able to talk without my voice breaking.
"Oh," I ignore the feeling of my stomach dropping and instead put up the one thing I was good at doing. I smile.
"Well, I like you and you are my best friend." He pauses for a second before continuing to ignore me. "I'll come by early on Saturday?" I stand there and wait for him to answer but he turns around and pretends that he didn't hear me. My smile falters a bit before I slowly turn around and walk back to my register with a few quick glances behind me.
I stand behind my register and take the 'closed' sign away, trying to ignore the feeling deep in my stomach as I ring up the next few customers. Just as I'm about to hand a woman and her child a receipt, I look up to see Grumpy giving me a weird look. Almost like he was concerned. He was either concerned or constipated.
I shoot him a forced smile and when he sees that I've seen him, he goes back to ringing up people in his lane.

It was finally my lunch break and I was hoping that Tyler still wouldn't be angry at me. I was reciting my apology to him in my head as I walk towards our bench outside of the market, my sandals dragging against the pavement. The leaves scatter against my feet as I slowly come to a stop in front of our bench. I feel my shoulders sag in disappointment when I see that Tyler isn't there.
Just as I'm about to turn around, I notice a small bag laying under the bench.
I slowly walk up to the bag, in case it was a bomb or if someone was hiding around the corner with a knife. I carefully pick up the bag and notice that inside there is half of a chicken sandwich. A wide grin stretches across my face as I sit down, relieved and feeling like I could float away.
Just as I take the sandwich out, a small yellow sticky note falls from the bag down to my feet. I frown a bit before bending down and picking up the small piece of paper and turning it around to see Tyler's handwriting scrawled in messy letters across the paper.
'So you won't starve.
See you on Saturday.'
- TW ( Solo )
I laugh and take the sandwich out of the bag, taking a small bite and smiling to myself.
