Embarassing Questions for Couples - Mason and Yvette
I tell my heart to shut up and stop screaming in excitement but it doesn't listen. Not sure if you've ever tried to control your racing heart, it's like trying to control a toddler whose on a sugar high.
Since there is no making my heart calm the frick down, I sit in my chair and take deep breaths. It does nothing but makes me feel like I have some small sense of control.
It's the little things that count.
The door to my office opens and my heart lets out one loud shriek as Mason strides in followed by Yvette.
Mason eyes me critically and my heart clamps shut and shrinks back. The only thing to make it not cower is the smile Yvette wears, warm and inviting.
"Why are we wasting our time here?" Mason asks.
Yvette simply looks at him and he plasters on a smile that is nothing but mocking. But that tracks.
"You can sit," I say, barely managing to push the words out of my tight throat. Why is he both so good-looking and terrifying? It seems unfair.
Yvette takes a seat on the couch but Mason doesn't move, completely reluctant. Again it's a single look from Yvette that makes him settle down beside her. Now that is power.
I take a deep breath and my heart asks me if we really want to bring on the rainstorm of skepticism that is undoubtedly coming our way. Since it's been established I dive head first without any true thought, I tell my heart to shove it.
"Thanks for coming today," I say. "As you know I've asked these questions for couples to Carter and Donovan and now I want to ask them to you."
"Owens actually sat through this?" Mason asks.
The skepticism is sent with raised eyebrows. I bear the weight of it without quelling.
"Yup and Yvette said you both would be up for this," I say.
Not sure where this sense of bravery is coming from but I hold onto it with dear life. Have you ever stared down an attractive man with piercing blue eyes? Nerve-racking.
"We are up for it," Yvette says.
She touches Mason's knee and he eases back from his piercing stare.
"Okay," I say. "I'll ask the question and you can just speak your answer or point. First question, who overthinks everything?"
With a tiny smile, Yvette points to Mason and Mason rolls his eyes.
"I give things the amount of thought they deserve. I do not overthink. Overthinking is for people who aren't confident in their decisions."
Yvette continues to sit with her tiny smile. This woman is too perfect for him. I hope he knows that. This is Mason, of course he doesn't. No, wait this is Mason, maybe he does know. But I don't know, he can be dense. Oh jeez, now I'm overthinking.
"Who showers less?" I ask.
Mason scowls. "What type of question is that? We both shower like normal people."
"I do," Yvette says. "Mason sometimes showers twice a day. It's how he decompresses."
"That is not something that needs to be shared. I want that struck from the record."
"It's struck." There's no record so I don't know what he expects me to do. But it's best not to antagonize him. "Who's always eating?"
Instantly they both point to Yvette. She reaches out and squeezes Mason's knee.
"Mason doesn't eat when he works. Its something we're working on."
"It's called concentrating."
"No, it's called unhealthy."
"Excuse me for being good at my job."
"Going twelve hours straight without eating isn't being good at your job."
"Whatever it is, this isn't a topic for us to be discussing here."
"Okay. But it's something we need to talk about."
I fight my smile at seeing how Yvette handles Mason. At least someone does. Carter doesn't really handle Mason as much as she reacts to him and they start a never-ending back and forth.
"Next question," Yvette says.
"Who has a nicer butt?" I ask.
Yvette raises her eyebrows in surprise and Mason points to himself. Yvette slaps his hand and he laughs. It's a rare sound and is more boyish than I imagined it ever would be.
"Just kidding," he says as he leans close to Yvette. "It's definitely you."
She laughs and shakes her head at his teasing smile. I don't say anything, afraid to break this precious affectionate moment. Let's be honest, we hardly get to see these moments. Mason is like a porcupine who is always prepared to attack. We never see him without his quills raised.
When they both look at me, I start and shift. "Um, okay who is more possessive?"
They both point to Mason.
He makes a face. "A million women could flirt with me and this woman would have zero reaction."
"It's called trust, mi amor."
"Still, a little sense of possessiveness would be appreciated. I could be stolen from you, you know."
Yvette lifts her face to him and Mason stills as he stares down at her. In his look is not just love but complete vulnerability. None of his emotions are hidden, they are there in his eyes for the world to see. And all he sees is his whole world.
I do nothing, I don't even breathe. This is something that rivals any moment between Carter and Donovan and I have no idea what to do. I can't slip away, that would draw attention to me. What do I do?!
Mason breaks from Yvette's gaze and focuses on me. All the previous softness about his expression is hidden behind a mask.
"Let's get this over with," he says. "We've been here long enough."
I cough and clear my throat. "Right, flash round. Who drools more?"
They both point to Mason and he doesn't seem at all bothered by this truth.
"Who is the better driver?"
Mason points to himself and Yvette points to herself. With a shake of his head, Mason takes Yvette's wrist and shifts her pointing finger to him then smiles in satisfaction.
"Who curses more?" I ask.
"In English or Spanish?" Mason asks as Yvette points to him.
"Uh, either," I say.
Mason points to Yvette. "What I know, I got from her."
She elbows him playfully. "Your vocabulary was already very extensive when we met."
"Next question," Mason says.
"Who always sleeps in?" I ask.
They both point to Mason and he raises his hands.
"In my defense, I'm not lazy, I simply don't go to bed until early in the morning."
"Which makes life interesting since I get up early to run in the morning," Yvette says.
A night owl and an early bird, that had to make life interesting. At least with Carter and Donovan, Donovan just wakes Carter up.
"Who is always on their phone?" I ask.
Yvette instantly points to Mason with both hands and he looks annoyed as he crosses his arms.
"No comment," he says.
"Do you ever try to make him stop," I ask Yvette.
Mason leans in before she can respond. "That is not one of the couple questions, so you get no response."
Oh, seems she does. I can't imagine trying to make Mason do anything he doesn't want to. It seems as easy as trying to get Carter to do something you want her to. Both of them are kinda impossible.
"Who has the worse singing voice?"
They both point to Yvette and she smiles up at Mason. "He surprisingly has a good singing voice. He sometimes sings me to sleep-"
Mason clamps his hand over Yvette's mouth. "That is not something that should be shared."
Even with him covering her mouth, Yvette manages to look teasing and unbothered. Eventually, the look makes him lower his hand.
"But it's so sweet," she says.
"It was sweet. It is now never happening again. Next time you'll know not to share things that aren't meant to be known by other people."
She kisses his cheek and I watch as Mason thaws. Again I can't help but be amazed at how much this woman is able to handle Mason. I truly thought that was impossible. But I guess miracles do happen.
"Who takes the most selfies?"
The reaction is instant as they point to Mason. He shrugs, unabashed.
"When I look good it's good to document it," he says.
"Every day?" Yvette says.
This time, Mason leans over and kisses her cheek. "You're welcome for being this attractive and maintaining it just for you."
"I would be flattered if I didn't know it comes from a habit of years of being the First Son."
"I could stop any time and become a fat, ugly man if you want."
"It's a habit I'm not mad about."
Mason smirks. "That's what I thought."
I fight another smile, enjoying this moment of affectionate bickering. Mason, a married man. Wow, I really never saw that one coming. Could have sworn he'd end up a bachelor for life.
"Final question, who is the lawbreaker?" I ask.
Yvette points to Mason as he points to her. She stares at his accusing finger and then up at his face.
"Excuse me?" she says.
"You're criminally beautiful."
Her head falls back as she bursts out laughing. Mason stands and takes her hand, helping her up.
"That's it, we've wasted enough time."
"But I don't know how you're a lawbreaker," I say.
Mason stares me straight in the eyes and I see that the soft, affectionate husband side of him is not given to me.
"And you'll never know. I know you leak secrets," he says.
"I do not!" I say, even though I am fully aware of leaking Carter and Donovan's couple questions when they told me not to.
Mason narrows his eyes as if he can read my thoughts or maybe it's the guilt that is splattered all over my face.
"Of course not," he mocks. "You got what you want. We're leaving."
It's fair, even though I enjoy seeing this rare moment of them being a happy couple. As they walk to the door, Mason laces his fingers with Yvette's and kisses the back of her hand. She smiles up at him.
I sink back in my chair as the door closes behind them. Yup, I'm going to be single for the rest of my life.

Hello there my Diddliest of Doos!
This was cute, this was adorable, this was something else and so therefore you should say something about it. 🗯💭💬🫶
Okay, you don't have to say anything about it if you don't want to. I won't pressure you into it. *slides ice cream towards you* It's completely you're own free will. *slides spoon over* There's no reason whatsoever you should share your thoughts. *smiles* It's totally your choice.
Okay, now that I have successfully bribed you, let me break some bad news to you.
*Hits glass with hammer*
Depressing, I know. Now we have to clean up this mess.
Okay, that was not the bad news I had to break to you. The bad news is my writing is out of wack. Due to my health being out of wack. I'm struggling to write even one shots, which are usually the easiest things.
I'm still going to try to give you Saturday updates but they might be more along the lines of these little moments, maybe a Carter quiz, or whatever I can think that's easily written.
I'm sorry, I hope you understand. I'm hoping if my health stops being wacky wack then I'll be back with the one shots.
Till them I hope you show anything I post in here a lot of love so it lessens my guilt of not giving you one shots.
Love you tons, my cinnabon!
Vote, comment, follow because I gave you ice cream and so that means I own you.
