Chapter 9
"Far off, full of sorrow,
centuries old."
The Rosier family home was one of the most beautiful building Kira had ever seen. It was a house entirely focused on art and architecture, one that had been in the Rosier family for generations. It's white exterior stood out in the green surroundings. The inside was filled with white pillars and marble floors and even contained a three-story library.
Evan had been surprised to see them but he did not hesitate to let them in. He had closed the door and activated the protection charms without a word.
Now, they sat in one of the smaller living rooms. His house elf had brought them tea and he had lit the fire. He was waiting for them to explain what had happened.
"You know my magic?" Kira began.
"Yeah. You're a descendant of a powerful witch and all that." He frowned, wondering where it was going.
"We found another relative who had the same magic. Only when we got to her house, everything changed." She continued to explain the past week to him. "We came here because I knew it would be the safest with all the magic protecting it. We'll leave if you want us to."
He shook his head. "You're always welcome here, Kira. Who is this wizard that's after you?"
She bit the inside of her cheek, holding her mug closer to her body as she thought. "I don't know. Whoever he is, he's after the artefacts and believes I can find them."
"So what are you going to do?"
She looked up. Her gaze filled with determination. "I'm going to find them."
"Find them?" Aurelia interjected. "Are you sure?"
She was sure. She thought about it the entire journey here. This man would continuing trying to find her until he had all the artefacts. Who knew what he wanted them for. The chaos he would cause. If she could find them before he did, she could keep them from him. And then she could stop him from whatever he was trying to do.
She looked at Aurelia and nodded. "He's not going to leave me alone. I need to stop him before he tries to hurt my family." Her family. Another large motivator. Her magic was yet again putting her family in danger.
"I'm in. Merlin knows you need me."
Kira smiled, there was no convincing her to not put herself in danger. She would always be there for her.
"I'm going to help to," Evan said.
"You don't have to. It's going to be dangerous."
"I'll be damned if I let you run into danger on your own." The corner of his lips turned upwards. "Now, where do we start?"
"The ministry."
~~~
The French Ministry of Magic was situated in the center of Paris, accessible to all those visiting. Kira walked through the massive doors, holding up a badge that had her name and department on it. She received a nod from the security guard and led Evan inside. Aurelia stayed at the house, offering to go back to their home and look it over.
They walked through the main entrance hall and turned down a passageway. They were going to the Department of Magical Artefacts. There had to be some research or notes on Dhara Horne. Her status would get her in undetected but she remained careful. She wanted them to blend in.
She found the elevators and stepped inside, Evan following her. She had combed her hair back into a neat bun and wore a long, dark purple trench coat. She did not have her actual uniform, but it was close enough to not be most noticeable. Most Unspeakables rarely leave the Department of Mysteries at normal times.
The elevator tinged as it stopped and her and Evan exited. She walked down the hallway and after a few turns she found the door she was looking for. The Archive. This was where they kept copies of all research done on any magical artefact. It was also a room she was fortunate enough to have access to.
She walked in, only to be stopped by the person sitting at the front desk. The older woman spoke French. "Reason for entry?"
She held up her badge and the woman nodded. "Your friend?"
She responded in the same language. "He's from the London Ministry. Department of International Magical Co-operation."
"Why does he need to see the Archives?"
"Classified."
The woman frowned but she nodded and let them through. Evan nodded his head to her, mumbling his thanks and followed Kira into the rows of tall shelves. Once they were out of earshot, he said, "So, what exactly are we looking for?"
She sighed. "Dhara Horne." She waved her hand and the shelves shifted around them as boxes filled with files moved towards them. Three boxes stood before them. "These are all the files that mention her."
"I guess we should start."
Kira raised her hand and two files flew towards them. She grabbed it and flipped through it, looking for anything that would lead them to her artefacts.
"What artefacts are we looking for again?"
"A wand, a mirror, and a ring."
After looking through every file, Kira was certain this was going to be harder than she had originally thought. The most helpful piece of information were the notes done on one of her diaries. It was the only one found in France, near a castle in Amboise. They mentioned how it detailed her time as an advisor for the King who lived there, but most of it had been blank. They also believed it was cursed, but they could not figure out the spells. After three people had died trying, they locked the diary away and concluded their research.
Was the diary she had cursed? She had tried to search for magic but she was no Curse-breaker.
"I think that's all," Evan said, drawing her from her thoughts.
She put the last file back into the box and sent them away with a wave of her hand. She turned around and the shelves reformed, making a path back to the entrance.
They got to the end and found a group of people at the end. The woman was looking into the rows of shelves, talking hurriedly in French. Three men stood behind her.
She whispered to Evan, "Let me do the talking."
They got to the end and stood before the group. Kira's eyes widened slightly as she recognized one of the men standing in the middle. It was her brother. Nothing ever went her way.
The woman spoke. "This man is from the Department of International Magical Co-operation. He was sent from London, not this other man."
Thomas' eyes widened. He stepped forward. "Ma'am, forgive me for the inconvenience. He works with me. I had no idea he had already arrived."
The other two men, one in a blue suit and another in a green suit, stood behind her. The one in green wore a pin indicating that he was an Auror. She did not know who the third man was.
"And her?" She glared at Kira.
She interjected before he could saw anything. "Someone who has unrestricted access to this area."
She pursed her lips but she did not say anything else.
Kira smiled. "Excuse me, we're done here. Mr Rose?" She looked to the door ad he nodded in acknowledgement.
"Yes, thank you." He opened the door and stood to the side to let her and Evan out. She walked down the hallway and he caught up to her. He leaned closer and in a hushed voice said, "What are you doing? Why is Rosier here?"
She kept her eyes ahead of you. "Work. I can't exactly speak about it."
"You can when you've taken one of my colleagues without telling my department."
"Tom, don't go to my house. I'm staying with Evan. I can't say much here."
"Kira, what's going on?" She could hear the concern in his voice.
She did not want to tell him everything but she needed to make sure he was safe. That he was not caught up in all this. "I'll explain another time but I think I'm being followed. You might be too. Don't go straight home. Use protective charms. Go back to London."
"Will you be okay?"
"Yes. I'm working with Aurors." One Auror, but he did not need to know that.
He took a deep breath but he nodded, clenching his jaw. "I'll see you around."
"See you." He turned down another hallway and she breathed a sigh of relief.
Evan took his place next to her. "I think we're being followed."
"Who?"
"Man in blue. He was in the entrance hall and in the lift."
She thought about it, recalling who was in the elevator with them. She did remember seeing someone wearing blue when they walked in.
"The Ministry isn't safe."
They were being watched and Kira could only hope that her family was okay. Charlie was safe at Hogwarts, but her pregnant sister and niece were more vulnerable.
