CHAPTER NINETEEN
By the next morning, Harry Potter was once again the center of attention, whispers about Sirius Black accompanied his name. Carina Malfoy could clearly see the student body staring at him while he awkwardly sat down for breakfast.
"I know something!" said Pansy Parkinson in a sign-songed tone as Daphne Greengrass and her took a seat besides Carina who just raised an eyebrow in response.
"Don't you always?" rolled his grey eyes Draco Malfoy.
Pansy blinked her eyes trying to look cute "Potter blew up his aunt with accidental magic."
The Slytherins around them who heard began to snicker mockingly, some youngling asked sarcastically "Isn't he a too old to have magic outburst?", another one said "What about the dementor thing?", they turned and looked at him from their table. Carina noticed some of her fellow Housemates mimicking a fainting fit.
Carina shot a warning look towards the two second year boys "Stop behaving immaturely. I expect more of the noble House of Slytherin." she spoke in a tone way too familiar with Snape's.
The boys turned red and replied shyly "Forgive us Lady Carina."
Draco groaned"I can't believe that this will be our life now."
Carina just blinked at him questionably.
"Are you going to order all of them?" he gestured around their table.
Carina hummed as she cupped her tea "Perks of being a Malfoy, I say." her lips quirked up ironically.
Draco rolled his eyes once again and grabbed her timetable to compare with his own. He frowned as realization dawned him "Well, that's a bummer." Carina glanced at him curiously "It seems as if we only have three classes together."
Carina titled her head on her side "Do not worry, Dray dear. You'll have Zabini along with Goyle and Crabbe with you."
"Yes, but it's not the same." he pouted.
Carina petted his head gently "Is sweet Dray sulking that his little sister will not be with him all the time?"
Draco's ears turned red as he scoffed shoving her hand away "Shut up you nerd! Moreover, what kind of sane person takes both Ancient Runes and Arithmancy for electives? Only Theodore, you, I reckon some Ravenclaws and obviously Granger." he commented half-heartily.
Carina chuckled lightly then she turned her blue eyes towards Blaise Zabini who immediately sat straight meeting her austere gaze, "Zabini," she started "Please, try to keep him away from trouble. I do not want to hear anything about Draco arguing, especially with Potter, in my absence."
Blaise nodded and smiled "Of course, my Lady." he replied charmingly with a wink but immediately turned to his plate the moment Draco glared at him.
"And I expect a full report how he is doing with his lesson." she added ignoring Draco's narrowed gaze.
"I do not need a babysitter!" he snapped annoyed while Carina smiled kindly with mischief in her blue eyes "Brother dear," she said sweetly "Of course you do."
"Well, I have to get going to Arithmancy class. Now, if you excuse me, I have to pick up Granger." she said politely making Draco stare at her bewildered.
"Granger? Why?" he wondered out-loud.
"To enforce House unity."she replied in a matter-of-fact tone.
Draco's grey eyes narrowed accusingly "You just want to annoy father."
"That's just a bonus." Carina responded cheekily.
"Careful, sister, your Gryffindor is roaring."
Carina sneered at him "There is no need to get nasty." and towards the Gryffindor Table where the Golden Trio was seated.
Harry Potter was pleasantly surprised when he noticed her reaching them. However, he swallowed way too fast, turned red and began to choke. Ron Weasley hit him repeatedly at his back but it had no effect.
"Anapneo." said Carina calmly, pointing her wand at Harry, whose airway seemed to clear at once.
"Thanks Malfoy." spoke the Potter boy obviously quite embarrassed.
"Carina!" cried cheerfully Ginny earning a soft look from the elder girl "What are you doing here?" she asked.
Carina ruffled her red hair affectionately "I came for Granger actually."
"Me? Why?" asked Hermione in astonishment, not really expecting that.
"Your next class is Arithmancy, right? Unless you've chosen Divination?"
Hermione shook her head "No, I chose the ones we had previously discussed."
Carina nodded approvingly "May I check you timetable?" she stretched her hand as Hermione lend it to her "As I thought, it's exactly like mine." She then gestured towards the doors "Shall we go together then?". The Golden Trio gaped at her shocked as well as everyone who heard her, Ginny on the other hand just rolled her brown eyes.
"You are the only one that I consider academically par with me, so I think it'll be beneficial for both of us to partner up." Carina commented raising her hand for Hermione to shake. A gesture of partnership, of friendship. And she did with a smile that showed her bunked teeth. Hermione bid her friends goodbye, Carina nodded kindly and together walked along already into a deep conversation about their upcoming classes.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The day went surprisingly well, Hermione and Carina worked together in almost every class when needed. They discussed about anything that came to mind and it seemed like they had a lot in common. The only difference was that Carina was raised to act like a nobility and didn't always speak her mind like Hermione. Only when it was needed.
Hermione introduced her to some muggle authors when Carina told her that she was a fan of Homer works, Iliad and Odyssey, that her late Uncle Alphard used to read to her when she showed a certain fondness for books. She then promised the Slytherin girl to make a list of recommendation of muggle literature that she could borrow. Carina was delighted.
During lunch Draco spoke her ear off. Honestly, Carina felt kinda nostalgic now that she didn't have her brother beside her all day long as she was used to. However, she knew that this was preferable. They were thirteen-year-old's and they should start to grow independent from one another. They were twins, they had a special bond that could never be broken yet they needed to grow into their own character without influencing each other. But, that didn't make it any less lonely.
The twins joined Cedric in lunch at the Hufflepuff Table and as they were laughing with Draco's impression of Flint's Quidditch speech, Carina felt a piercing stare on her. She searched around and noticed a Ravenclaw girl, Cho Chang, now she reminisced, glaring cruelly at her while staring longingly at Cedric.
"It look like you have an admirer." stated Carina as she pointed at the older girl.
The boys turned around and Cedric smiled charmingly as he waved at her who looked away blushing "Cho Chang, the new Ravenclaw Seeker, sweet little thing." said Cedric.
Carina titled her head as she was once again greeted with a cruel glare "I wouldn't really say sweet."
"Do you fancy her then?" Draco asked curiously.
Cedric paused to think about it and shrugged "She is fit." and Draco nodded in agreement.
Carina rolled her eyes "Well, that was quite lovely. That's what every girl wants to her 'She is fit' ." she said in a sharp tone. Cedric grinned, he let his arm fall around Draco's shoulders and grabbed her hand kissing it softly "Do not fret my shinning Star, nobody comes before you guys." he finished with a wink.
Carina noticed some girls starting to gossip as she pulled her hand away "And this is why half of the school believes you're dating me while also having an affair with Draco."
Draco and Cedric blinked at her "Only half?" and started to laugh while Carina shook her head chuckling amused.
"What kind of rumors will be about us until I reach seventh year, I wonder?" Cedric asked.
"That will be interesting to see." Draco laughed.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When lunch was over, the twins send off outside the castle for the first ever Care of Magical Creatures' class. The Malfoy twins were accompanied by their fellow Slytherins. The grass was still damp from the heavy rain of the previous day and made a precarious descend towards Hagrid's Hut.
Hagrid was waiting for his class at the door of his Hut. He stood in his moleskin overcoat with Fang at his heels. He looked quite eager, since it was also his first lesson after all.
"C'mon, now, get a move on!" he called as the class approached "Got a real treat for yeh today! Great lesson comin' up! Everyone here? Right, follow me!"
He clapped and waved them on before beginning to walk along the forest edge, forcing them all to follow. Eventually, they came to an empty paddock, where he stopped and clapped his hands together again "I want everyone ter gather around the fence, make sure yeh can see, that's it! Now, everyone will need ter open their books and-"
The chilling voice of Draco broke in, board and drawing "How exactly are we supposed to do that?". He took his and Carina's copy of The Monster Book of Monsters, which they had had bound shut with a long rope. Those books almost ate their hands off making Draco reasonable for being annoyed and snappy.
"Hasn-' hasn' anyone been able ter open their books?" asked Hagrid crestfallen making Carina almost pity him, however, she was also not happy with his choice of school material. She might like the giant but she took seriously her education and this book was both dangerous and a joke.
"You stroke it." he said once he realized no one at all had managed to open one. He demonstrated with Hermione's, pressing one large finger on the spine and soon enough the book fell open silently. He looked around, keen to see everyone handle their bindings off. Once everyone had succeeded, Hagrid hurried around to the edge of the forest and out of sight.
As he disappeared, Draco turned to his sister and spoke carefully not for Hagrid to hear them "Oh, how silly we've all been!" he sneered "We should have stroke them! Why didn't we guess? Really witty, giving us books hat try and rip our hands off!"
"Shut up Malfoy!" snapped quietly a voice behind them and it was none other than the infamous Boy-Who-Lived.
Carina scowled "Haven't you been taught that is rude to eavesdrop?" Harry green eyes widen as he was caught of guard by her sharp tone.
"Careful, Potter, there's a dementor behind you-" Draco mocked.
"Enough!" Carina said in an austere tone looking narrowly between the boys "Both of you grow up! And stop bothering each other along with it! Or better yet stop talking to each other all together!"
Harry gaped at her the he pointed Draco saying outrageously "He provokes me!"
Carina scoffed "What are you, five? Besides,"she stated staring at his emerald eyes "You don't provoke him any less. It's been two years already. Stop, both of you." then she grabbed her brother, moving away leaving a very confused Potter with his friends.
"Cara..."
"Yes, Draco?"
"Is it time of the month?"
"... I'm going to hit you."
Draco cowered away of his sister reach with his hands up in surrender. Suddenly, they heard someone squeal and it was some Gryffindor girl who was pointing towards the opposite side of the paddock.
Trotting to them were a dozen of bizarre creatures. They were a cross between a horse and a bird. They had the body, behind legs and tails of horses, but the front legs, wings and legs seemed to belong to some sort of eagle or hawk. They had large beaks and orange eyes. The claws were about half a foot long and deadly looking. Each of the beasts had a thick leather collar around their neck, which was attached to a long chain, and the ends of all these held in the hands of Hagrid, who came jogging into the paddock behind the creatures.
"Hippogriffs." thought Carina as she watched Hagrid shaking the chains and urging the creatures towards the fence were the class stood. Everyone drew back slightly as he reached them and fastened the creature to the fence.
"Hippogriffs! Beau'iful aren't they?"
They truly were. Their feathers were gleaming off the sun and each were different colour. They seemed very magnificent once you get over the shock of actually seeing them.
"So," began Hagrid "Firs' thing yeh gotta know about Hippogriffs is, they're proud." he walked towards one "Easily offended, Hippogriffs are. Don't ever insult one, cause it might be the last thing yeh do."
He pulled the chains off of one "Yeh always wait fer the Hippogriff ter make the firs' move." he continued "It's polite see? Yeh walk towards him, and yeh bow, an' ye wait. If he bows back, yeh're allowed ter touch him If he doesn't bow, then get away from him sharpish, cause those talons hurt. Right, who wants ter go first?"
Most of the class backed farther away in answer. Only the Golden Trio seemed to be the front of the class given that the Malfoy twins were at the very back. The hippogriffs were tossing their fierce heads and flexing their powerful wings. They did not seem to like being cooped up, but who did really?
"No one?" asked Hagrid with a pleading look.
"I'll do it." volunteered Harry Potter.
Some people gasped and began to whisper something about his tea leaves,, while Hermione and Ron looked at each other in worry. Carina raised an eyebrow at this, not understanding what this commotion is all about.
"Well, there goes Trelawney prediction" commented Pansy Parkinson.
Carina turned at her "What are you taking about?"
"Trelawney saw a death omen in his cup." she explained.
Carina scoffed "This is about Divination then?" she shook her head and turned forward seeing that Hagrid already slipped off the leather collar of a hippogriff.
"Five Galleons that the hippogriff will scratch his face off." she suddenly heard Draco whisper.
"Deal." replied in an equal tone.
"Easy now, Harry" spoke Hagrid quietly "Yeh've got eye contact, now try not ter blink, hippogriffs don't trust yeh if yeh blink too much..."
The Potter boy did not shut his eyes. Buckhead, she heard Hagrid call the hippogriff, turned his great, sharp head and was staring at him with one of his orange eyes.
"That's it" said Hagrid "That's it, Harry... Now, bow."
Harry did as he was instructed to and then looked up. Buckhead was still staring haughtily at him. It did not move, and out of nowhere Carina felt her heart pounding against her rib-cage as she frowned.
"Ah," said Hagrid, sounding worried "Right, back away, now, Harry, easy does it-"
But then Buckbeak suddenly bent it's front knees and sank into a bow and Draco gave his Galleons to Carina who smirked smugly.
"Well done Harry!" beamed Hagrid "Right! Yeh can tough him! Pat his beak, go on!"
The Gryffindor boy moved slowly towards Buckbeak and reached out towards it. He patted the beak several times and Buckbeak closed his eyes lazily, as though enjoying it. The whole class broke out into applause, even Draco looked impressed.
"Righ' then Harry" grinned Hagrid "I reckon he migh' let yeh ride him!"
Harry was taken back in surprise as Hagrid lifted him up and placed him on buckbeacks back, ignoring his protests. Some gasped as they saw Harry put his foot on top of Buckbeak's wing. Everyone stared with an open mouthed as Hagrid slapped Buckbeak's hind and they curved upwards into the sky.
"That was...Interesting?" spoke Carina struggling to find the right words while Draco rolled his eyes. She studied his expression and sighed as she noticed the little green monster appear over his head the moment the heard Harry Potter laugh in delight, loud and clear.
"He's back!" yelled someone "Harry's back!"
They all looked up at the sky to see Buckbeak heading down straight for the ground. They landed on the ground with a heavy thud. Harry looked a little shaken as he pushed himself straight off the hippogriff and onto his feet. Suddenly, the whole class began to to cheer but Harry heard none of it as his bright emerald eyes met the bleak blue colored ones of Carina's who smirked lightly while she nodded her head approvingly making him beam.
"Good work Harry!" roared Happily Hagrid "Who else want ter go?"
The rest of the class climbed cautiously into the paddock, each seemed at ease by Harry's success. Hagrid untied the other hippogriffs one by one, and soon people were bowing nervously, Draco and Carina were one of the last ones to try.
Carina walked towards a red hippogriff whereas Draco towards Buckbeak, five feet apart from her. Carina didn't notice Hagrid along with the Potter and Co. approaching them. Her attention was at her hippogriff while she walked in a slow pace and steeled her nerves as the orange eyes met her blue ones, waiting.
Hagrid looked pointedly at Harry urging him to move towards the Slytherin girl but he was hesitant. Then Ron Weasley pushed him forwards with a roll of his eyes gaining a snicker from Hermione.
"Nice and easy." Carina heard, out of nowhere, Harry Potter whisper to her, encouraging her.
Carina felt the hairs on the back of her neck stood up as a small breeze touched her when she bowed without breaking the stare. The hippogriff relented and slowly net its front feet into a grand bow. Carina let a small smile break through her blank face and the hippogriff itched its way closer to her. She reached her hand out and gently stroke it's soft feathers not paying any attention to the boy next to her who looked in daze.
"This is very easy." commented Draco loud enough for Carina and Harry to hear.
Carina let go of the red hippogriff glancing at her brother. She made her way to him he moment she felt that something bad was going to happen meaning that Draco will do something stupid. She felt her eyes widen when she heard "I know it must have been, if Potter could do it... I bet you're not dangerous at all, are you? Are you, you great ugly brute?"
It happened in a flash. Buckbeak raised his claws but before he had the chance to hit Draco, Carina managed to push him way, hitting her instead.Hagrid was wrestling Buckbeak back into his collar while everyone around her spread out, screaming and ducking to cover. However, Harry and Draco run to her, seeing her lying on he grass, blood pouring on her robes.
"Cara!" yelled Draco as he paled trying to reach her.
"Malfoy!" Harry also grabbed her softly as she groaned in pain.
She clenched her teeth, tears threatening to fall as she glanced at her brother, "Draco, you idiot!"
"Hagrid!" shouted Harry desperately "She needs medical attention immediately." his green yes shone with concern when he saw a long, deep gash on her arm.
"Relax, I'm not dying." she said through pain.
Hagrid lifted her up with ease and Hermione ran to hold the gate. Blood was splattered on the grass as Hagrid carried Carina up the slope towards the castle with Draco not far behind.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Just so you know, it's all your fault." Carina said for the millionth time as she watched Draco and Cedric enter the hospital wing with tea and cookies she had previously requested.
Draco rolled his eyes as he put the tea with the cups and cookies next to her "I said I was sorry."
"How do you feel, star?" Cedric asked.
"Well, my hand is sore. I'm not comfortable with this bandage since it itches me. Thankfully, i a couple of days, it'll be fine. But tonight I need to stay in the hospital wing. Madam Pomfrey's orders." she replied annoyed while glaring at Draco.
He raised his hands in surrender "What can I do to make it up for you?"
"You brought my tea and cookies that's a first." she paused to think "I need you to take Snuffles for a walk and also feed him."
Draco raised his eyebrows "How am I supposed to do that when he is in your dorm?"
Carina rolled her eyes "Call for Pansy and ask her to give you the black suitcase, you idiot."
Draco nodded his head he was about to leave when Carina said "Take Cedric with you, he is a perfect."
"I think I can manage on my own." Draco snapped and rushed outside with Cedric who turned and threw an apologetic look towards Carina who just rolled her eyes.
The moment she heard the door close, he blue eyes fell on her tea and sighed "I should have made Draco pour a cup for me first." she thought annoyed. Out of the blue, she heard the door open but saw no one. She narrowed her gaze, all this felt way too familiar.
"Accio Invisibility Cloak." and guess who appeared.
Harry Potter stood there, looking at her sheepishly while ruffling his already messy hair awkwardly "Um.. I was just-... Hi." he waved.
Carina blinked and sat back to her bed "Come and take a seat Potter but first, pour us some tea."
Harry froze for a moment but he slowly made his way to her, he grabbed a cup filled it and gave it to her making her nod and pouring another for him. He sat on chair next to her and took a sip "What kind of tea is this?"
Carina hummed "My favourite, black tea with blueberry aroma." she glanced at him "Put some sugar in it, I'm afraid it might be a little bitter for you."
Harry did as he was advised to and once again taste it "Better." he said grinning his glasses falling slightly off. Carina put her cup next to her and with her good hand pushed them back onto his face making him beam even more.
"How's the arm?" Harry asked worriedly.
"Nothing that cannot be healed. In couple of days will be as good as new." Carina then gestured at the cookies "Cinnamon cookies, also my favourite. Try them." and he did.
"How's Hagrid?"
And that's how it went for a couple of hours before Harry left. Small conversation between blueberry aromatized tea and cookies. Nothing important but it was quite comfortable and they both enjoyed it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"No! Come back here!" Draco yelled as he run along the dark corridors.
Suddenly he could see nothing "Snuffles?" waiting for any kind of noise.
It was official.
He lost Snuffles.
"Cara is going to kill me."
