CHAPTER EIGHT (BOOK TWO)
Carina sat opposite of Draco as they ate, listening to their parents as they argued. Alphard Black, an uncle to Narcissa Malfoy was at his last days and he asked to see the twins the last time. Lucius was hearing none of it and Narcissa was trying to convince him otherwise. She pointed out that Alphard was the last male Black of the Family, except of Sirius Black but that's another story and since most of his fortune was passed to his imprisoned nephew, the other half will be passed down to he twins alongside his her sister's daughter.
"Uncle Alphard is greatly fond of the twins, especially Carina." commented Narcissa.
"It seems you've forgotten Narcissa but your uncle along with your sister and cousin are disowned. They are not part of the family anymore." spat Lucius.
Carina and Draco glanced at each other for a moment. They both adored great uncle Alphard, even though he was a austere man, he was really funny and when the twins learned that he was reaching towards his end because of old age, they couldn't help but feel depressed. He was their only family who they were able to keep a contact with.
"Father." said Carina in a monotone voice gaining her parent's attention.
"Yes Carina?" he acknowledged.
"It would not appeal to the public eye if we just ignore uncle's wishes, given to the fact that mother is a Black." she justified and watched as her father began to think about it.
"You are correct. If we gain the inclination of the Ministry I'll also take the Black's seat at the Wizengamot." nodded Lucius smirking.
"You'll meet your uncle tomorrow evening. Make sure to be on your best behavior." he warned and the twins nodded saying "Yes father." before returning to their food.
Carina turned her eyes to stare at her mother's grey eyes, she was looking at her with a loving stare and kind smile thankful that Carina managed to change her husband's mind. Carina continued to eat not returning any sigh of affection. She was a Malfoy and Malfoys hid their feelings. The only exception being Draco, at least for now.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carina and Draco stood quietly allowing their mother to fix their clothes. Carina was wearing a black dress reaching above her knees, black ballerina shoes and her hair in a twisty bun. Draco on the other hand was in a black suit with a black oxford shoes and as usual his hair gelled back. Narcissa nodded her head approvingly and stretched her arms for the twins to take.
They were going to apparate to Grimmauld Place where Alphard was receding. Number Twelve Grimmauld Place is a handsome Muggle townhouse built in London. Ad Carina watched the number Twelve to appear between eleven and thirteen, she realized that this is the last time that she'll ever be in this place again. How wrong she was...
Narcissa walked forward with the twins following behind her. Once they were inside, Narcissa turned around and stared down at her children.
"Each of you will spend two hours with your uncle and then we'll go. Draco you go first." said Narcissa and Carina watched her brother disappear up the stairs.
Narcissa put her hands at Carina's shoulders forcing her towards the living room. They sat down on the couch near the fireplace when Narcissa called Kreacher. Similar to all House Elves, Kreacher was considerably smaller than a human. He had a bulbous, snout-like nose, bloodshot eyes, many folds of skin and white hair growing out of his bat-like ears.
Carina pitied the small creature. He was so used to Black's abuse that he stopped having a mind on it's own. That's why Carina was so fond of Dobby. Kreacher made the Malfoy women tea eager to please the pureblooded women.
After a while Narcissa decided to go talk at her aunt's portrait to calm her annoying and loud voice. She can't believe how her mother didn't go mad growing up with that kind of woman. But then again, that could explain aunt Bellatrix.
Two hours passed quickly and Draco walked down the stairs. Noticing his mother absence he speed towards his sister "He wants to see you. I think he was a little disappointed that you weren't with me but once I mentioned that you'll see him later he relaxed."
Carina nodded smiling at her brother "How did he looked?" she asked standing up and walking to the stairs.
"Sick." Draco answered watching his sister leave.
Carina stood outside of the black door when she knocked softly.
"Enter." said a hoarse voice behind the doors.
Carina walked in and immediately met the grey eyes of her uncle's, identical with the ones her mother and brother had. Alphard Black was a charming middle aged man. His raven hair turned white and had a stern expression on his face but once he met Carina's blue eyes he smiled gently.
"Come my child." he said softly.
Carina smiled nobly and sprinted towards her uncle hugging him tightly "I've missed you."
"So did I my dear." Alphard replied hugging her back.
Carina pulled away and Alphard patted a spot at his bed near him, gesturing for Carina to sit.
Alphard smiled "How have you been child?"
Carina shrugged "Studying mostly and spending time with Draco. Nothing really has changed expect the fact the we started Hogwarts."
Alphard nodded "Slytherin right? Your brother mentioned it."
She nodded and leaned in to tell him a secret "Between you and I, the Hat wanted to put me in Gryffindor."
Alphard stared at her surprised "And why didn't it?" he asked curiously.
"I asked him to. My sorting would determine Draco's sorting and who would have saved us from our father;s wrath if we were in Gryffindor?" she explained.
"Your studies?" wondered Alphard.
Carina grinned "First of the year!"
"Yes you beat that muggleborn Granger right?"
"Ah so Draco has filled you in with everything as it seems."
"Of course he did. He also kept blubbering about his certain loath about Harry Potter." he commented.
Carina groaned "Seriously, I'm tired of hearing that name! Potter did this! Potter said that! Look at Potter!" she mocked and Alphard's eyebrow shot up "You also hate him, I guess?"
Carina shook her head "It's not that I hate him but I don't like him either." she explained.
"Then what do you think?"
"He is just a problem. Trouble seems to follow him everywhere he goes and to be honest I do not have the time or patience for it. My hands are already full with keeping the Slytherins in line, particularly my brother."
Alphard looked at her with a kind expression "Sometimes you remind me of my nephew with your indifferent attitude."
Carina titled her head "Who?"
Alphard sighed "Sirius."
Carina seemed confused "Sirius? Isn't he in Azkaban for the murder of thirteen muggles and the Potter?" she wondered.
Alphard glanced at her in bewilderment "How do you know about the Potters?"
"Draco and I came across a conversation between mother and father when were about nine years old." she explicated "I remind you of a murderer?" she asked offended.
Alphard shook his head "Whatever anyone says, I fullheartly believe that Sirius is innocent." he said in a pained voice.
"Why so?"
Alphard took her hand and patted it softly "My dear Carina, Sirius would never betray James Potter who was like a brother to him and would never join the Death-Eaters after your aunt's and uncle's death." he justified.
"My aunt and uncle?" she questioned.
Alphard nodded his head "Regulus Black and Alyona Malfoy."
Carina at once recognized those names "Sorry uncle Alphard but father has forbidden us to even mention anything about Alyona Malfoy."
Alphard smiled with a faraway look on his eyes "Alyona Malfoy... What a bright child she was... She was a Slytherin, best friend of my other nephew Regulus and the lover of Sirius as they grew up. Quite a sight they were a Slytherin and a Gryffindor."
Carina gazed at him peculiarly "What happened at her?"
Alphard sighed "Alyona and Regulus at the age of sixteen were recruited from the Dark Lord to join his forces. Sirius tried to persuade them differently but they both needed to do so in order to protect their families. They had no other choice." he paused
"However at the age of seventeen they tried to escape, unfortunately you cannot leave the Death Eaters just like that." his eyes glinted in tears and grey eyes appeared in uncontrollable pain "My Sirius was so heartbroken. He blamed himself, he said that he should have tried harder and if it wasn't for James Potter who knows how my nephew would have ended."
Carina crossed her arms to think "I don't understand. If he was in so much pain as you put it then it should have been easier for Lord Voldermort to manipulate him. So why do you continue to think that he is innocent?"
Alphard smiled at her "They never gave him a trial... I tried everything in my power to give him one, but being a Black and a disowned one much less they didn't want to listen to me."
Carina's eyes widen "They didn't give him a trial? What happened to innocent until found guilty?"
Alphard chuckled "My dear you may remind me of Sirius but you are an exact copy of your aunt Alyona in beauty and heart. Protecting your best friend, your brother exactly as she did with Regulus, putting your family first and keeping your true self well hidden. As you are like Alyona, your brother is like Regulus and I hope that you'll not bear the same fate as the other two did."
Alphard looked out of the window with a regretful look on his eyes "I just wish that Sirius would have proven innocent after so much pain he has been through."
And then Carina promised to herself that if she ever had the Chance to fulfill Alphard's dying wish she would.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I don't understand why you cut your hair Cara." said Draco as his sister helped him with his schoolwork.
"Uncle Alphard died Draco and since I'm not allowed to mourn him with tears then I cut my hair to show my feelings." she replied.
"And mother agreed to this?" Draco gaped.
Carina hummed "Mother told me is wise to do so and father doesn't care, honestly."
"Yes but a boy's haircut?" questioned Draco staring at her short hair.
Carina grinned "Do not worry brother. I'm still the good looking twin," she said making him scowl and throw a piece of paper at her.
They continued to study until Draco raised his head and looked around then he paused to think. Carina noticing her brother in a deep thought, she spoke "Dray, dear?" gaining his attention, she looked at him concerned "Is there something wrong?"
Draco shook his head "Have you noticed that Dobby has been disappearing a lot lately?"
Carina nodded her head and suspiciously stared at her brother "Do you know anything? Or better yet, do you have anything to tell me?"
Draco hesitated before putting his quil down "The first day that we arrived from Hogwarts, I searched for Dobby to help me unpack my things and I found him outside of father's office. As I walked towards him I heard father mention Potter to Mr.Nott."
Carina also put her homework away and with a look of astonishment glanced at her brother "Potter? Why would father talk about Potter with Theodore's father?"
"I'm not sure but listen this. Mr. Nott said that the Dark Lord is going to be furious that they haven't done anything to help him rise once again. Father told him not to worry because they are going to use the Diary." Draco said.
Carina titled her head "Diary? What Diary?"
"I don't know either but what I did understand is that they are going to use it to revive You-Know-Who." said Draco staring worriedly at his sister eyes.
Carina tighten her lips together and out of the blue she stood on her feet "Let's go."
Draco also got up looking at her with puzzlement "Go where?"
Carina sternly walked out of the room"To find that bloody Diary."
Draco groaned "We'll get in so much trouble."
"What's life without a little mischief?" Carina grinned with a playful glint in her blue eyes.
Draco returned her with a full blown smile and shoved her playfully "Careful sister, your Gryffindor side is showing."
"No need to get nasty." Carina scowled as she shoved back.
After some minutes they finally reached to their father's office, placed on the top of the Malfoy Manor. Carina and Draco double checked if their father was near. Seeing that he wasn't they carefully opened the door preventing it of making any sound.
Lucius Malfoy's office being on the top, had wide windows making the most open room of the whole house. The desk was in the middle of the room, behind it and in front of it there stood three black leather chairs, at the right wall was Lucius' collection of alcoholic drinks with silver goblets accompanying them, at the left there was leather couch and sofas with a small silver table in the middle and at the end of the room, the whole wall was decorated with books, nothing considered as light reading.
Carina and Draco glanced at each other and shared an knowing look as they began to look around the bookshelves for something uncommon. Minutes passed by when Carina noticed an old, black, leather textbook. Curiously, she softly pulled it to inspect it.
It was in perfect shape even thought it was old and hen she noticed gold letters down in the textbook reading, TOM MARVOLO RIDDLE. Carina stared at it in bewilderment "Riddle? Who is Riddle?" she thought. Then she opened the book and saw that it was blank.
Draco realizing that his sister stopped searching he asked "Did you find anything Cara?"
Before Carina had the chance to reply an angry voice bummed in the office "What are you two doing here?"
They both froze and slowly turned at the door, there stood Lucius Malfoy dressed as usually in black robes and cold blue eyes glared down at his children. Draco wavered and started to fidget in fear and Carina copied her father's cold stare but with an expressionless face she said " We're looking for a potion's book since we already have finished our own." she lied flawlessly.
Lucius eyebrow rose "In here?"
Carina shrugged indifferently "You always have the most interesting books."
Lucius studied her for a moment not fully believing her until he eyes fell on the book she was holding "Why do you have that?" he spat as he ran with a full speed grabbing it from her hold.
"As I was searching I came across that. It looks like a notebook." she answered observing her father as he tensed.
For a second a flash of worry passed from his eyes "You didn't write anything, did you?" he asked sharply.
Carina shook her head then she titled it to think "Write? Not read?" looking at her father who was acting rather suspiciously she asked "Can I keep it?"
"No." his shoulders untensed as he sneered down to her "Go prepare we are leaving for the Diagon Alley." he ordered.
"That was close." Draco said as they were far away from the room. However, Carina wasn't really listening, her mind was still at a certain black book. She'll have to try again later.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before getting their school supplies, Lucius Malfoy decide to take a trip to the Knockturn Alley, a shopping area off Diagon Alley in London. It was filled with numerous shops devoted to the Dark Arts.
The twins saw their father grabbing something from his office and hiding it in his robes and they knew better than to question him. It wasn't the first time that they visited the Knockturn Alley, so they had nothing to ear as long as they stood close to their father.
Borgin and Burkes is an antique shop located at thirteen B, Kbockturn Alley. The shop is a quite large, dusty and dimply lit with a large stone fireplace. It is owned by Mr.Borgin and Mr.Burke who are known to deal with unusual and ancient wizarding artifacts and of course it is used to carry out otherwise shady business and sell objects of Dark magic and other dangerous magical items. The main reason why this shop is frequented by families like the Malfoys.
The Malfoys entered inside the shop. Carina looked around when her eyes fell at the owner who seemed to be nervous judging by his shaky hands and sweat on his forehead. She caught him glancing at a cabinet and she raised her eyebrow following his gaze.
"Do not touch anything." said Lucius staring pointedly at his son.
"I thought you were going to buy us presents." complained Draco earning a warning look from Carina.
"I said I would buy you a racing broom." replied Lucius, drumming his fingers on the counter,
"What's the good of that if we are not on the House team?" Draco grunted, looking sulky and bad tempered making Carina to want to roll her eyes but she just decided to walk over the cabinet looking around bored in order to not raise any suspicion.
"Harry Potter got a Nimbus Two Thousand last year. Special permission from Dumbledore so he could play for Gryffindor. He is not even that good, Carina would easily beat him any time! It's just because Potter's famous for having a stupid scar on his forehead." scowled Draco.
Carina stood in front of the cabinet studying it and she noticed that it was not fully closed. She opened slightly and her eyes widen lightly in shock.
"Unbelievable."whispered Carina. Speak of the devil and he shall appear.
Emerald orbs met blue and stood there staring at each other. Harry Potter was inside the cabinet staring at Carina Malfoy who was shielding him from prying eyes. Harry didn't understand how much he missed seeing her until he saw her coming in the shop following her father and brother. The sight of her immediately made a warm feeling spread over his stomach and if he said that he hadn't been thinking about her over the summer then he would be lying.
Harry opened his mouth to speak however Carina cut him short by harshly saying "Be quiet! They must not know that you're here!" and closed the cabinet door softly.
"I there something wrong Cara?" appeared Draco out of nowhere.
Carina glanced at her brother "Nothing Dray" she answered but Draco continued to watch her bot believing her.
"Done." Lucius announced making Carina and Draco walk to their father "Come, children." and they followed him outside, just for a second Carina glanced behind her shoulder, her eyes falling at the cabinet.
The Malfoys started to make their way towards the Diagon Alley. Lucius stated that he has somthing to take care of and he left the twins to buy their books at Flourish and Blotts which was full of costumers.
Carina looked over the list in disgust. Almost the whole booklist was written by one author, Gilderoy Lockhart, a complete joke in Carina's opinion. Pansy and Daphne gushed over him the whole summer when they weren't swooning over her brother. Although, this summer Carina got to meet Astoria Greengrass, Daphne's younger sister, a complete sweetheart.
Carina scowled as she put the embarrassment of literature inside her cart for both Draco and her when she held a chuckle coming from behind, Carina turned and saw a tall, extremely handsome boy with chiseled features, dark hair and bright grey eyes. Carina would have blushed if he was her type but to be honest she will later understand that she more into dorks.
"Not a fan I guess?" said the boy.
"Of this man? A complete waste of magic if you ask me." replied Carina raising mockingly the book of Year With A Yeti.
"Most girls seem taken by him." the boy commented.
"Him? A pretty man with no modesty or brain?" Carina shook her head making the boy laugh at her comment.
"I'm Cedric,Cedric Diggory." said the boy stretching his hand for Carina to shake.
She nodded returning his handshake "Carina Malfoy."
Cedric nodded in understanding "A Slytherin then?"
Carina's eyebrow rose up "Please not a Ravenclaw?"
Cedric grinned at her amused "And why not?"
"I detest Ravenclaw." she boldly replied and Cedric burst into laughter,
"He shook his head "No, a Hufflepuff."
Carina hummed in approval " A quiet House that goes along with everyone. A kind House." she complimented.
Cedric stared at her in disbelief "You don't think of us as the loser House?"
Carina frowned "Most Slytherins have nothing bad to say about Hufflepuffs and just because you don't have important names or know-it-alls or even risk takers to put it kindly, that doesn't make you any less of a House."
Cedric grinned "I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship.' he said waving goodbye at her.
Carina shook her head. What a silly boy... She then decided to search for her brother, who knows what kind of trouble he got himself into. As she was walking she felt someone grabbing lightly her arm and forcing her to turn to see Hermione Granger.
"Malfoy." said Hermione politely.
Carina nodded, pulling her arm off Hermione's gasp "Granger is there anything I could help you with?"
Hermione nodded "I saw your brother, Harry and Ron over there and no doubt that they'll start fighting." she explained pointing somewhere in the shop.
Carina sighed "Better go there to stop it."
Carina walked forward with Hermione beside her reaching the group. Draco seeing his sister behind the two Gryffindors and the Weasley girl he smiled mischievously making the other three frown in confusion.
"What's the problem here?" asked Carina and the other three turned behind them to stare at her.
"You won't believe it Cara! Potter here has a girlfriend!" mocked Draco.
Harry at once looked at Carina and shook his head "She is not my girlfriend! I swear!" said glancing at the ginger head girl who blushed and longingly was watching him.
Carina noting the girl's look, narrowed her eyes towards her forcing the ginger hear to cower in fear. Carina mover forward to her brother, brushing shoulders with the Potter boy.
"It is not really my business." she commented.
"How are you?" blurted out Harry gazing at Carina who seemed surprised for just a second.
Not giving a chance to answer Mr.Weasley, Carina guessed, appeared struggling over with the Weasley twins "Ron! What are you doing? Did you get your books yet?"
Then Carina felt a hand on her shoulder, she noticed her father's family ring on his finger then shared a look with her brother. This is not going end well.
"Well, well, well... Arthur Weasley."
Pointed face, pale blond hair and cold blue eyes. Harry watched Lucius Malfoy standing with his hands on the Malfoys shoulders, sneering at the Weasleys. Harry observed the man carefully, Draco was the exact copy of his father as for Carina she only inherited the cold blue eyes and the white-blond hair.
"Lucius" said Mr.Weasley nodding coldly.
"Busy time at the Ministry, I hear." said Lucius "All those raids... I hope they're paying you overtime?" he reached into the Weasley's girl cauldron and examined a very old, battered copy of A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration "Dear me, what's the use of begin a disgrace to the name of a wizard if they don't even pay you well for it?"
Carina wanted to roll her eyes for her father's behavior but she fought against it. She just stood there expressionless as she watched the Weasleys turn red, Potter and Granger glared, and Draco smirked. Why can they not for once fight?" It's getting boring.
"We have a very different idea of what disgraces the name of wizard Malfoy." Mr.Weasley spat.
"Clearly." said Lucius his eyes strayed to a muggle couple, noticing the resemblance Carina knew that they were Granger's parents " and I thought your family could sink no lower-"
There was a thud of metal as the Weasley's girl cauldron went flying, Mr.Weasley had thrown himself at Lucius knocking him backward into a bookshelf. Dozens of heavy books, Carina and Draco were pushed towards the ground.
Harry run towards the Malfoy girl "Are you alright?", he kneeled in front of her as she dusted herself. Carina nodded her head, her eyes void of any emotion. Harry sat up, offered his hand to help her up, however Carina pushed it away and stood up from the ground.
Carina turned her eyes to the fight, Mr.Weasley was beating her father up "He brought this upon himself." she thought.
Harry continued to stare at the girl "You cut your hair." he pointed out making Carina's eyes turn at him.
"So?"
"Its suits you." he replied flushing red "But long hair suits you better," he blurted out.
Carina hummed in agreement, her eyes wandered to the Weasley girl who was glaring darkly at her and in amusement Carina smirked at her as she said to Harry "You should stop talking to me, your girlfriend does not like it."
Harry glanced behind him then gazed deeply to Carina's blue eyes "I already told you Ginny is not my girlfriend. Besides I'm not into brown eyes."
Carina chuckled lightly "You're twelve. You don't know what you like yet."
"Break it up, there gents, break it up! " Hagrid was wading towards them through the sea of books. In an instant he had pulled Mr.Weasley and Lucius apart. Mr.Weasley had a cut lip and Carina's father had been hit in the eye by an Encyclopedia of Toadstool . Carina noticed her father was still holding the girl's old, Transfiguration book. He thrust it at her, his eyes gladdening in malice.
"Here girl, take your book, it's the best your father can give you." Pulling himself out of Hagrid's grip he beckoned to Draco and then walked towards Carina eyeing accusingly the Potter boy who stood too close to his daughter and swept from the shop with the twins by his side.
"Bloody Weasleys." Lucius cursed under his breath.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That night when Carina was certain that everyone was asleep, once again, she entered her father's office and searched for the black, old textbook but she frowned in dissatisfaction and huffed in frustration as she exited from the room.
The Diary was gone.
