Chapter 2- Grey Art Gallery

"Don't you think my apartment is dull?"

"I mean, look at the walls. They are are grey and they are so boring. It doesn't suit me." Caroline complained making Katherine chuckled.

"What's funny?" Caroline asked in an annoyed tone.

"Nothing seriously," she laughed louder this time.

"Then stop laughing." She said madly.

"I've just realized how much I've missed the old Caroline. Coming to New York was not easy. What's reassuring is that you did not let go your little control freak personality. It's refreshing in a good way."
They were both quiet until Kat laughed again causing Caroline to join her.

Ah, women. I will never understand them.
----

Caroline was folding her clothes while Katherine was scrolling down her Instagram page. Suddenly, a huge grin was plastered on Kat' face.

"Care! Let me tell you that you're a lucky woman."

Caroline looked at her in confusion. She shook her head and explained to her bewildered friend.

"Recently, an Arab came into the tea parlour. He was around fifty years old. He kept checking me out and he offered me a ticket to accompany him to the inauguration of the Grey Art Gallery. It's tonight. You know how taken up I am with Stefan. He works way too hard. Go instead and try to buy something which will illuminate your flat. And your welcome, Care-bear." Katherine winked at her.

"You're the best! I love you so much." Caroline jumped excitedly and hugged her best friend.

**Few Hours Later**

"Are you going or not, Niklaus?" Elijah asked his brother impatiently. The latter was ignoring him.

"Nicklaus, did y-" he cut him off and whispered harshly "I'm busy, Lijah."

"I still don't see the reason why I should go there. I'm not going to buy anything. And dealing with people is a pain in the ass."

"Niklaus plea-" Elijah couldn't even finish his sentence before Klaus cut him offfor a second time.

"Fine! I shall go for your sake. Bloody hell!" Klaus complained.

Elijah mouthed a 'thank you' to his brother.

Caroline was having a mental breakdown. She could not find anything appropriate to wear. She just moved in New York and did not have that much time to go shopping. Her control freak self was quirking out. She won Miss Mystic Falls with her good taste in clothes, but now she lost confidence in her fashion style as her wardrobe looked like crap.

"Breathe in. Breathe out, Caroline. You're a big girl and you will figure something out" she whispered to herself.

"First, I'm going to shower. Happiness is a long and hot shower."

As soon as she stepped in, she began humming the song 24K magic by Bruno Mars.
After half an hour, she was all cleaned up and smelled of lavender. She chose to wear a white creamy dress which stopped mid-thigh. She grabbed her pair of white heels to complete her look.
She was already running late, so she went for some gloss and mascara. She let her down into some loose curls.

"Not bad at all, Caroline."

After admiring herself in the mirror, she grabbed her keys from the apartment and hired a cab to drop her at the Grey Art Gallery.

She was fascinated by the artworks displayed. They were amazing and beautiful. They carried a lot of unconscious judgment with them as if they created a dichotomy of good and bad, right and wrong, acceptable and unacceptable. Katherine was really a good friend to have given her the invite. She was having a good time.

A particular artwork caught her attention. It was a snowflake. She once read in a book that a snowflake is one of God's most fragile creations, but look what they can do when they stick together.

"Do you mind sharing your opinion, love?" a heavy British accent interrupted her. She was startled.

The man that stood in front of her was different. He was charming but had an air of mystery to him. His dark-blue eyes contrasted with his pearl-white skin. Caroline wanted to run her fingers through her dirty blond hair. She was sure that with those dimples, he brought many women in his bed.

"Take a picture, love. It will last longer." Klaus smirked at Caroline. She snapped out of her drooling state.

"I'm sorry. I-I just got lost in my thoughts again. Your eyes are beautiful." She blurted out.

Klaus chuckled and smiled at her. But, that smile did not reach his eyes. Caroline was right, that man was different.

"Before I embarrass myself again which I'm sure I will, I'll leave you to enjoy the rest of the evening."

************

Klaus decided to go to that bloody art gallery after all. He wanted to bail on Elijah but since he promised him, he just had to do with it
It was boring at first glance. The women were gossiping about stupid things and the men were trying to look cool while deciphering one of Da Vinci's artwork.

His eyes widened for a second and he was furious. There hung his artwork, his snowflake.

'Elijah didn't dare, did he?' he thought.

He painted it when he was in Rome. Elijah was quite fond of it. Klaus did not sell it because he did not want to have people whispering behind his back again.

He saw someone was looking at his work. He approached her and make his presence known.

"Do you mind sharing your opinion, love?" he asked.

He startled the poor woman. Klaus was immediately attracted to her. She was genuinely beautiful. She looked like an innocent angel.
He did not like her penetrating gaze. It brought him back to when he was still Mikael's punching bag. He did not want to be weak again.

"Are you okay?" Caroline touched him on his shoulder.
He froze at her sudden touch and backed away. This was getting strange. People thought that his eyes were those of a cold hearted person but she said that they were beautiful.

"I didn't answer your question." Klaus stared at her in confusion.

"You want my opinion, right?" Caroline smiled at him.
He was never one to believe at love at first sight.

"It is beautiful. One of a kind. I've always believe that what you put in the work, the results will come. And that artist wanted to express something. And this showed me his story."

"What is his story?" Klaus asked curiously.

"He was angry, dark, he didn't feel safe and he did not know what to do about it. It shows that he wished he could control his demons instead of having his demons controlling him. He's lost and alone. He is miserable." Caroline stared at him.

Klaus had never felt so opened before. She was a stranger. His family could not even understand him. And she did, she managed to make him feel vulnerable. It was true. Klaus was miserable.

No. He was not going to break his walls. He was Klaus Mikaelson, the beast. That woman had no right.

"You paint?" Klaus asked.

"Nope. But I admire." Caroline giggled.

"What you said was utter bullshit. I think he is someone strong, unbeatable and powerful. He doesn't need anyone. He doesn't need people to be sorry for him especially naive blonde girls."

Caroline's POV

'Who the hell does he think he is? He asked for my fucking opinion. I did not ask for his. Asshole!'

I was not going to let him off the hook that easily. Calling me naive was his biggest mistake. He would know not to mess with Caroline Forbes again.

I finally got it. It was his artwork. He was the one who had painted it. That explained his rude behaviour.
But I was just telling the truth.

Strange!

End of POV
"It is yours right? That explain why you acted so crazy a moment ago. Are you okay-"

"Go back to where you come from, girl. You don't know who I am. I don't have time waste with you. Bloody hell!"

He infuriated her. She was pissed. Caroline thought he was just a selfish prick.

"Trust your own instincts. Your mistakes might as well be your own, instead of someone else's." She said.
