Surprise
"Henrik? Hey, Earth to Doctor Schneeplestien."
The doctor was startled out of his spacing out by his coworker, the male sitting across from him with two paper cups of steaming coffee in hand and a light smirk of amusement on his face.
"You look like you could use this." He remarked, carefully sliding the cup across the table to Schneep.
"Zhis is just vhat I need vhile on break, thank you Doctor Iplier." Schneep sighed in content, taking the cup with a nod of appreciation and holding it in his hands for a moment, blowing on the coffee before taking a cautious sip.
"Yeah, it's been a hell of an all nighter hasn't it? My office hasn't been this busy since New Years." Dr. Iplier yawned, stretching his arms high over his head before picking up his own coffee and taking a long gulp.
"Mein ER room has been the same vay, I even had to help vith a bone marrow transplant." Schneep agreed, shuddering when he thought of the tedious procedure that had nearly killed the patient.
Dr. Iplier started to reply, but broke off when his phone started vibrating in his pocket, the American shooting Schneep an apologetic smile as he quickly stood up and walked out of the break room before answering.
"I haven't even been on break for like five minutes, just find someone else for the procedure, there's other anesthesiologists bedsides me!"
Schneep could hear Dr. Iplier's voice through the door even though his words were muffled, the doctor's tone filled with weary exasperation as he talked loudly into the phone.
"I gotta go help with an appendix removal procedure, it's apparently very urgent that I help even though I'm supposed to be on break." Dr. Iplier huffed as he stormed back into the break room, downing the rest of his coffee in a couple of gulps before striding back towards the door.
"Don't vorry, I'm a qualified doctor, I can take care of it." Schneep soothed his irritated coworker, starting a fresh pot of coffee for him.
"But-"
"I don't mind zhe extra vork. I only have fifteen minutes left in my shift, so I can do zhe procedure before I leave." Schneep interrupted with a nonchalant shrug.
"Thannks Henrik, you're the best." Dr. Iplier replied gratefully, sitting back down to wait for the fresh coffee to finish brewing.
Schneep left the room and went to his operation room, calling the receptionist to let her know that he'd be taking care of the appendix surgery patient before he started setting up his room for the procedure.
"Here they are." The nurse announced just as Schneep finished pulling on a pair of blue rubber gloves, the unconscious patient laid on his chair before the nurse left him alone to do his work.
Schneep worked well past his shift to not only finish the appendix surgery, but to also clean his room back up and visit some of the other patients to make sure that they were okay, the German happy to help despite his weariness.
"Seriously, why are you still here? It's almost dawn, your shift ended like an hour ago." Dr. Iplier chuckled as he handed Schneep his fifth cup of coffee.
"Vhat can I say, I'm a glutton for punishment." Schneep murmured sleepily, gulping down the coffee before walking out of his operation room, tossing the empty cup in the trash before heading towards the parking garage.
The German climbed into his car and started it up, pausing to yawn before he drove out onto the empty highway to get home.
The radio was blasting heavy metal music to help keep Schneep awake, the doctor feeling his eyes droop nonetheless.
BA-DUMP
Schneep immediately became more alert as he quickly pulled over to the side of the road and got out of the car, using his phone as a flashlight to see what he had hit.
A white cat without a collar was laying in the road, one of its front and back legs bent in uncomfortable angles with bone visible from the end of the cat's tail.
"Shit!" Schneep cursed aloud, darting over to the animal and kneeling down beside it and delicately pressing two fingers on its neck to see it it was alive.
Schneep let out a quiet sigh of relief as he felt its pulse thrum underneath his fingers, the cat stirring slightly in its unconscious state as it let out a weak meow.
"Let me see vhat I can do." Schneep murmured thoughtfully as he went back into his car, digging out a box of rubber gloves and slipping a pair on before he returned to the creature's side.
The cat was awake and mewling pitifully, its crystal blue eyes darting around as if they were looking for help.
"It vill be alright, I can help you." Schneep cooed softly, kneeling down by the cat once more to determine the best way to transport them.
"Let's get you fixed up." Schneep grunted, gently scooping the cat up in his arms and holding it like a baby, making sure to walk slowly to the car and delicately place them in the passenger seat on top of his lab coat before looking up vet places nearby.
"Shiesse!" Schneep hissed in German, his phone showing that all vet places in the area were closed for another several hours.
"Vell, I'll just have to fix you up myself at home, won't I?" Schneep mused, looking down at the cat as it closed its eyes once more.
"Mein mieze."
