Chapter Twenty Six
EMMILYN'S AIR INTAKE WAS LESS AND LESS as she started gasping, glaring at Aunt Julia all the while. The blonde stared at her, a weird look in her eyes.
Elijah ran to their car, grabbing a paper bag and handing it to her. Emmilyn gratefully took it, gasping breathing into the bag. She realized Julia had caused her three anxiety attacks now.
"It's sold?" Conrad spoke in disbelief, staring at his aunt blankly. "You sold this house in the last twelve hours?"
"Yes." Julia nodded. "To a lovely family with three children and some kind of a poodle mix."
"Well, it can't just be over." Jeremiah spoke in disbelief. Emmi shook her head. She couldn't lose this house. She couldn't. She couldn't lose Susannah all over again.
"It is." Julia told them. Elijah wrapped his arm around his sister's shoulder, bringing her close to him. "Uh, I'm going to need your keys, please."
Conrad and Jeremiah both got their house keys out. "I bet you're really enjoying this."
"Mom." Skye spoke up, shaking their head. "Don't do this."
"Skye, really?" Julia scoffed. "I told you two I was selling the house, you just refused to believe it. And I'm not enjoying it but I will admit that I'm relieved it's finally over. Come on Skye, excuse me."
Emmilyn dropped her bag, slowing her breathing down. She moved her foot sneakily, tripping Aunt Julia. The blonde chose not to comment as she continued to her car.
Emmi shoved past the boys, walking into this house. She couldn't believe Julia had sold the house overnight. She basically sold their childhood overnight. Emmilyn pulled herself onto the counter, watching as the rest of her group followed her in.
Losing this place was the nail in the coffin. This meant they were losing Susannah forever. Almost every memory Emmi had with the Fishers and Conklin's were here at this house. She was scared it would fade away, like the memories of her mom were.
"Okay, so I know things aren't going the greatest right now." Jeremiah started his motivational speech. "But it's always the darkest before the dawn right?"
"Yeah, not this time." Conrad replied.
"Um, I'm sorry." Skye came into the room. Emmi looked at them blankly, hands in her lap. "I tried to get her to call off the deal."
"It's not on you, Skye." Conrad told his cousin. Emmi knew Conrad was right. Kids weren't responsible for their parent's actions.
"I know, but she's my mom." Skye looked around the group. "So I would get it if you guys were angry with me too. I just can't deal with her right now."
"Hey, no one's mad at you, Skye." Jeremiah pulled his cousin into a sidehug. Em was still kind of mad, but not for this reason.
"So, what?" Steven questioned. "We're supposed to go home now?"
"Yeah." Conrad nodded. "It's over." Emmi shook her head. After almost seventeen years of living here, she couldn't imagine letting go. That this was the short end to the best times of her life.
"No," Belly disagreed, seeming to think the same as Emmi. "Our last memory here can't be this. Everyone miserable and defeated. I mean this place deserves a better goodbye than that."
"Like what?" Conrad questioned. Emmi wanted to know what Belly had planned too.
"My mom and Amy came to the beach house with Susannah for the first time after her dad died." Belly told the group. "And it was supposed to be just the three of them, but Susannah hated how empty the house felt so she decided to throw a huge party. Everyone was dancing and drinking and they went swimming at midnight. And Susannah said it was like Gatsby or something. So I say that we throw a party too."
"I'm in."
"Me too."
"Me three."
"Oh, I love this for us." Cam Cameron grinned making the rest of the group laugh. Emmi smiled. It was exactly the goodbye the house needed.
"You in?" Steven asked Conrad. His eyes went to Emmi. The redhead nodded.
"I think it's exactly what my mom would have wanted." Conrad shrugged. "I'm in."
"Great!" Belly cheered. "Everybody, shower, power nap, and then I'm putting you to work."
Emmi shuffled out of the kitchen, going to the front yard. She hesitated as she looked at her mom's house. She just needed the confirmation it was still hers, that it was still there.
She sat down on the porch step, sighing as she put her heads in her hands. Her entire life had gone to shit in the span of four months. She needed to breathe and let go.
"Are you okay?" Steven questioned, sitting next to Emmi. "I feel like I've barely talked to you since April."
Emmi smiled sadly at him. Steven had been her number one at one point. "I just really miss my mom, and Susannah." Emmi told him. He nodded in understanding. "And I miss being able to drink without risking my liver fucking failing. And I miss being close with you before I fucked that up too. And I'm really going to miss this house."
Steven pulled her into a hug as Emmi started sobbing, holding her tightly. "You didn't fuck it up with me Em, you're still my bestfriend." Emmi hugged him back tighter. "Just because we don't talk as much anymore, doesn't mean I won't be here for you."
"I love you, Stevo." Emmilyn sniffed as she wiped at her eyes. She felt bad for having a meltdown on him, but she'd been holding it all in since March, or April. She couldn't remember exactly.
"I love you Emmi Wemmi." Steven smiled. Emmi smacked his shoulder at the old nickname from when they were little. "Plus, you were a pretty awesome friend with benefits the last few months."
Emmilyn threw her head back in a loud laugh, and Steven smiled at seeing the genuine happiness on her face. It was a rare sight these days.
"Emmilyn," Conrad spoke, walking onto the porch. He frowned as Emmi pulled back from Steven, wiping her eyes again. "Want to go on a party supply run?"
Emmilyn nodded as she stood up, frowning as Steven smirked at her. She shoved him into the house, watching as he went in the kitchen. "Belly and Jere are going too."
Emmi bit her lip. This was not going to be fun.
She nodded, climbing into the passenger seat. She'd make Jeremiah and Belly sit together in the back, that could be her entertainment for the week.
"Alright." Belly sighed as they parked the car outside of the gas station. Emmi twisted her body to look back at her. "So beer, tequila, vodka."
"Uh, Gin for Skye." Jeremiah added. Emmilyn's nose crinkled; Gin was an old person drink.
"Who drinks Gin?" Belly laughed. Emmi pointed at her to stress her agreement.
"I want Mike's!" Emmi decided. "Oh, and Malibu. Mix that shit with lemon and it's bomb, trust me guys."
"Old people and Skye." Conrad answeredc Belly. Emmilyn laughed slightly while Jere nodded. "Alright. I'll take care of this guys."
Conrad showed them his fake I.D. Emmi snorted. "With that?" Jeremiah questioned. Emmilyn huffed as she flopped back against the seat, crossing her arms over her chest. She watched as Conrad went inside before emerging a minute later. "Oh, no. What, your I.D didn't work, Mr. Herbertson?"
"Fuck off," Conrad scowled at his younger brother, flipping him off. "At least I have one!"
"Listen, it's cause I don't need one, alright?" Jeremiah responded, opening his car door. "Jumper and I are tight. You know, we're like bros. Come on, how hard could it be? Watch and learn."
Jeremiah emerged a minute later with no alcohol. Emmilyn laughed at him as he clambered into the backseat. "Oh, look at that face." Conrad taunted.
"Okay," Jere sighed. "So do you want to like pay someone to go in and buy it for us or?"
"Try a different store?" Conrad suggested. "Yeah, hop a few towns over where they don't know us as well?"
"I just don't think that anyone is going to buy your Guam I.D." Emmi laughed from her seat beside him. Conrad's eyes flitted over her face before he smiled.
"I would love to see your plan, Emmilyn Annah." Conrad replied. Emmilyn put a hand to her chest while her mouth fell open in mock offense.
"Why don't I just go in and ask?" Belly offered.
"That's not going to work." Conrad chuckled.
"He's right, it's not going to work." Jeremiah agreed.
Belly opened the door while Emmilyn raked her hands through her hair, pulling her tank top down to show more cleavage. She threw a smirk at the boys, walking into the store with Belly.
"Hey, Jumper." Emmi greeted, throwing a large grin onto her face. She put her arms down on the counter, glancing at Belly.
"Belly. Emmi." Jumper nodded. "I know why you're here."
Emmi's head tilted, biting her lip. "Do you?"
"You're going to try to give me a fake I.D." Jumper spoke. "Or tell me some story about how your mom forgot to buy wine for a dinner party or something."
"My mom's dead." Emmilyn snorted.
Belly glared at her. "No, no, I'm not." She shook her head. "I'm going to tell you the truth, and then you can decide if you want to help us out or not. So here's the deal. It's been a really crappy six weeks."
"Yeah, I heard about their mom." Jumper frowned, referring to the Fisher's Emmilyn looked down, sighing. She missed Susannah more than life. "I'm sorry."
"Yeah." Belly nodded. "And I'm sure you heard the house was for sale."
"Was?"
Belly chuckled sadly. "It actually sold this morning. So tonight is our last night here for like, ever."
Emmi nodded. "After tonight, we won't be able to come back to Cousins." She prayed Jumper didn't know about her mother's house.
Jumper exhaled heavily. "Woah. That blows."
"Yeah, I know." Emmi nodded. "It really really blows."
Belly sighed. "Have you ever just had like the shittiest day and all you want to do is just hang out with your friends and have a beer?"
Jumper smiled slightly, nodding. Em bit back her cheer as she and Belly got icee's, holding the door for Jumper as he wheeled their drinks out.
"Let's get this in the car quick." Jumper instructed them. "And do not get pulled over on the way home or I'll say you stole it while I was on the john."
"See you tonight?" Emmi smiled at him.
"See you tonight."
Jeremiah grunted as he picked a pack up. "I can't believe you just asked."
"I can't believe it worked." Conrad added.
"Come on you guys," Belly laughed. "Not everything has to be so complicated."
Belly handed Jeremiah a drink. "For me? What'd you get me?"
"Drink it and see." Belly smiled.
Jeremiah put the straw to his lips, eyebrow scrunching before a smile took over his face. "Half cherry. Half coke. Your specialty. Nice."
Emmi handed Conrad the extra drink in her hands, smiling up at him. "Here. Cherry Watermelon Strawberry mix. I made Tiger's blood. That's my specialty."
"I thought cocoa was your specialty?" Conrad smirked down at her. Emmi's smile dropped as she remembered that night, walking to her car door. She missed that night.
Emmilyn sat back against the seat, crossing her arms as Conrad started the short drive to the store for their party stuff.
Em opened the door to the store, holding it open for Conrad, Belly, and Jeremiah. "So what's the plan here?" Con questioned.
"I mean, it's a rager right?" Belly responded, grabbing a shopping cart. "So go big."
"How big are we talking, Bells?" Jeremiah asked, putting his arm around her shoulder. Emmi sent a smirk at Belly's direction.
"Right, I mean, are we talking like?" Con paused as he pulled a card out of his wallet. "Dad's Amex big or?"
"The sacred emergency Amex?" Jeremiah gaped. "Wait, guys. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Blow up furniture, strobe lights, bubble machines, the whole she bang."
"We need karaoke too!" Emmi squealed, smiling with a nod. She had a throwback to when her mother would gather all six of the children up, doing karaoke with them.
"Last one to fill a cart has to load it all in!"
Emmi cheered as she grabbed a cart, running ahead of the boys. She grabbed a karaoke machine, setting it in her cart along with a bubble machine. She grabbed a couple of blow up chairs, watching as Conrad came into the next isle with her.
She glanced at his cart before frowning. "Okay, no." Emmi immediately shook her head. "There is nothing fun in your cart. This is a party."
"These plates have glitter on them." Conrad argued, holding the plates up. Emmi snorted. He sounded like a dad.
Emmi coughed. "You need to get out more, Conrad." She laughed. She glanced behind him, grabbing a rainbow boa. She put it around his neck, smiling. "That's more like it."
Conrad sighed heavily. She turned, grabbing a pair of sunflower sunglasses and adding those. She laughed again, stepping back and putting her hands on her hips. "This is one hundred percent your look, Connie baby."
"Oh, is it?" Conrad laughed. Em nodded. She thought he looked like Harry Styles when he wore similar stuff.
Conrad came up beside her, placing a tiara on her head. She smiled up at him as he snickered. She grabbed her phone, taking a picture with him and then of him.
"You know, it's funny." Con smiled at her. "My mom used to call me Connie whenever I was too in my head." Emmilyn's smiled dropped. She remembered. "I'm sorry, I'm not trying to bring everything down. I know the order of the day is fun. Let's have some fun."
"No, it's not that." Emmi shook her head. "Um. Can we just talk about the elephant in the room that I feel like we both are pretending isn't there?"
"Yeah, of course." Conrad nodded, immediately taking his glasses off. Emmilyn smiled sadly at him again.
Emmi chuckled before going quiet as he stared at her. "I've been trying to figure out how to say it. How to say I'm sorry for that day. Susannah's funeral."
Conrad's gaze left her face, looking at the shelf beside him. "Emmilyn, you don't have to apologize for that."
"Just let me say I'm sorry, please." Emmilyn begged. She knew she shouldn't have acted like that at the funeral; it wasn't her business what Conrad did anymore. "I never meant to make her day about me. I was awful to you. I mean, I'm so sorry. I wanted to be there for you, like you were there for me at my mom's funeral. That's why I went to go find you. I saw Aubrey and kind of lost it. But we weren't together anymore so, I had no right."
"You'll always have a right." Conrad frowned at her. "It's okay. It's really okay. I was having a panic attack, I just crumbled. Felt like I couldn't breathe." Emmi's hand went to her chest, knowing how that felt. "Aubrey was just the one who found me. I really wish it was you."
Emmilyn frowned. She felt really bad about how she'd been acting to Conrad about Aubrey since she got here. Conrad slowly grabbed the tiara off her head, placing it back on the shelf. He ran a hand through her hair slowly, eyes tracing over her features. Emmi closed her eyes.
The two turned when Jeremiah and Belly cleared their throats. "Hey, Bells." She greeted slowly, fixing her hair. "I think we're done."
"Oh, we should get cameras!" Belly offered, grabbing some off the shelf. "Leave em around so everybody can take pictures at the party. We got to get one of all of us together like Susannah made us do every summer."
"That's a good idea." Jeremiah nodded with a smile.
•••
"Help, please." Belly called to Taylor and Skye as her and Emmi lugged boxes in together.
"Oh my god," Taylor spoke as she rushed forward to help the pair. "Where are the boys? And why aren't they helping you with this stuff?"
"Conrad's unloading the rest of the party supplies," Belly answered, sitting her box down. "And Jere's in the garage looking for things we can use that the uh movers left behind."
"Did you get me a halter top?" Taylor questioned, looking through the clothes they had bought.
"I looked for anything remotely retro and grabbed it." Belly shrugged.
"Okay, but so I part my teeth first and then stick my tongue out?" Skye questioned.
Emmilyn gave them a weird look. "What are you guys talking about?"
"Apparently Skye's never kissed anybody." Taylor responded.
"Which is completely normal and fine." Belly cut in.
"I know!" Skye exclaimed. "Externally imposed social expectations of normal have no effect on me. That being said, I've decided that I am ready and willing and would like to know what to do with the various parts of my mouth when it meets another mouth."
"You want to take this one?" Taylor questioned Belly. Emmi didn't understand why Skye rambled so much. "I mean, Belly's the expert. Cam, Jere-"
"Taylor!" Belly cut her off before Taylor could continue. Emmi furrowed her eyebrows; Belly had only kissed Jere and Cam unless she got a new boyfriend at home.
"What was it like kissing all of them?" Skye asked curiously. "Was it different? And in what ways? And feel free to be as technical as humanly possible."
"Yeah Belly, spare no detail." Taylor smirked at her bestfriend. "What happened?"
"Um, my first kiss with Cam was really really sweet." Belly answered. "And with Conrad I wasn't even in my body."
"What the fuck?" Emmilyn interrupted. "You kissed Conrad, Belly?"
Belly's face turned white as if she had forgotten that the redhead was standing there. "Emmi-"
Emmilyn grabbed her clothes, exiting the room to go upstairs. She could not believe Conrad had kissed Belly. More importantly, she couldn't believe she had never been informed of it.
She really hoped it was before her and Conrad had gotten together officially. It would still be bad because Conrad had been flirting with her all of that summer, but not as bad.
Emmilyn grabbed her hot pink leggings she had gotten, pulling them on. She put a blue leotard over it, pulling half her hair up with a green scrunchie and leaving the rest down.
She got her roller skates that she had found at the back of her closet off the floor, slipping them on.
Emmi skated into the party, dumping tequila into her mouth. "I'm drinking tonight." She said to her brother, stopping her skates. "I need this. My liver will survive one night, and I won't drink too much. Promise."
Elijah knew better than to argue with his sister, only biting his lip with a nod. "Pink promise?" He confirmed.
Emmi nodded, holding her pinky out. "Pinky promise."
"Fine," Her brother caved. "But I'm serious Em, not too much."
Emmi skated up to Dara and Marissa, hugging them in greeting before skating around the house, offering greetings to all the guests.
"Emmi, Emmi, come here." Conrad gestured over. "Steven's going to take our picture."
Emmi wrapped her arm around him, smiling widely at Steven. "Cheese!" He called, pressing the button. Emmi blinked at the flash. "That was a good one."
Emmi handed the camera to Conrad next. "Get a picture of me and Stevo?" She requested, causing the oldest Fisher to nod. The duo posed with smiles as Conrad clicked the button.
Emmi walked up to Cam Cameron, hugging him in greeting. "Thank you again for giving us that code!" She smiled.
"Anytime," Cam smiled back at her.
Emmi watched as Belly skated up, grabbing her hand and yanking her with her to the rest of their group. "Group shots!"
"If that's gin I'm killing you!" Conrad scowled over at Belly.!
"Aw, it's tequila, come on." Jeremiah replied.
"Yes, yes!" Steven cheered.
"Okay, cups up." Jere instructed them. "Listen. No matter how much time passes, or how far apart we are, we're always going to love you guys, okay?"
"Aw, Jeremy, you cheeseball!" Taylor grinned while Emmi smiled. She would always love the Fishers and the Conklins; no matter how much life pulled them apart. "That's so cute."
"To the last night!" The group toasted, throwing back their shots with cheers.
Emmilyn took her skates off, dipping her feet into the pool by Dara and Marissa. "So how's Gigi doing?"
"Oh, she's eating up the documentary." Dara laughed. "She's telling everybody she's going to be on the tv."
"No way," Emmi laughed. "I mean, I would too. Is she making money off the show?"
"No idea." Dara responded. "Hopefully, or she'll be pissed."
"Sounds like Gigi." Em nodded. She frowned as she remembered last summer at Hopper's cove. "Excuse me."
She stood up, walking back into the house. She laughed as she saw Taylor and Steven dancing to Party In the USA in the middle of the floor.
She cheered, clapping her hands along to them. They paused, looking at eachother. Emmi looked at Elijah excitedly. "He's definitely confessing his love." Elijah spoke.
"Definitely." Emmi nodded. She thought Steven and Taylor would be really cute together; she did miss Shayla though.
"Taylor!" A man snapped. Emmi realized quickly it was Taylor's boyfriend. She had forgotten about him.
Emmi froze. "Oh shit. That's Milo."
"Fight!" Someone screamed as Milo got into Steven's face. Em glanced at her brother; this was not going to go well.
"Bro, you need to go." Steven scowled, prodding his finger into Milo's face.
Milo said something Emmi couldn't hear while Taylor started yelling. Whatever Milo said ticked Steven off, because he shoved the man backwards.
"Steven!"
"Babe, this is for you." Milo spoke before trying to swing at Steven, completely missing. Embarrassing.
The boys got into a full fight, which Belly and Taylor did not appreciate. "Go Steven!" Emmilyn cheered, while Belly sent her a glare. "Sorry."
"You got this Steven!" Elijah added.
"Come on Steven." Conrad encouraged. "Kick his ass Steven!"
"You got it Steven!" Jeremiah agreed.
Steven grunted as he ran forward, tackling Milo and getting on top of him. He pulled his right hand back to punch him, but Belly grabbed it. "Get off the ground! Come on, get over here, help!"
Emmi rolled her eyes as Conrad and Jeremiah grabbed Steven, pulling him backwards. "Get off me, get off me!" The boys let go while Steven turned his attention onto Milo. "Come on."
Milo started to do some weird karate kick, but Taylor finally stepped in. "Milo, stop!" She shouted. "You're embarrassing me right now."
"Man, fuck this." Milo scoffed as he looked at the crowd. "Come on, Taylor, let's go. These people are too pedestrian for us anyways."
"These people are my friends." Taylor responded, staying in her spot. "Do you even know me, like at all?"
"Babe, what are you talking about?" Milo questioned. "You're my girl."
"What's my middle name?" Taylor asked. When Milo didn't answer, Taylor scoffed, walking out of the room. "Yeah, I can't do this anymore. It's over."
Emmilyn shook her head. What boy didn't know his girlfriend's middle name. "It's Madison!" Steven told Milo with a glare. "Her middle name is Madison."
Emmi went to walk back outside but Skye grabbed her, making Emmi, Elijah, Belly, Jere, and Conrad follow them outside.
"Guys, so, I've been texting with my mom." Skye told the group. "And she was able to put a condition into the sale. Since the buyers are only going to use this place as a vacation home, they've agreed to let you rent the place for one week every summer."
Belly and Jeremiah cheered, hugging eachother while Emmi shook her head. That was such bullshit: it was their house, they shouldn't have to rent their own house.
"You tell your mom thanks but no." Conrad told his cousin, seeming to think the same as Enmilyn.
"Come on, Conrad, at least hear them out." Belly sighed. Elijah seemed to have enough with the fighting, because he separated from the group, going back inside.
"It's over."
"Why are you the only one that to gets to make this decision?" Jeremiah cut in.
"Jere, we are not going to pay another family to rent our house." Conrad tried to reason.
Jeremiah was not having it though. "This isn't our house anymore."
"Exactly." Conrad nodded. "Let it go."
"Yeah, cause you're an expert at that." Jeremiah scoffed. "This is the shit he does. When things aren't perfect, instead of trying to fix it, he just decides to throw it away. And it's not just the house. You did to Emmi too, and you literally killed her because of it. You came to Elijah and fucking begged him for his blessing to date his baby sister, said you wouldn't break her heart, and you stopped it instead."
"No, no." Emmi shouted, jabbing her finger into Jeremiah's chest. "Don't you dare blame my overdose on him because it is not his fault and it was not on him. Don't use me to get to him."
Emmi scoffed, grabbing a bottle of vodka and walking to the beach. She could not handle them and their bullshit right now.
Emmi took a swig as she stopped in front of the waves. If she didn't focus hard, she could almost trick her eyes that her mom was right there, holding a surfboard and waving at her daughter.
Emmi wiped her eyes as she started to cry. She missed her mom so much her chest physically hurt. "Emmi!" Conrad shouted down the beach. "Emmi, come back inside!" Emmilyn ignored him as he approached. "I'm not dragging your dead body out of the ocean if you drown out there. Come out of the water, Em."
Emmi wanted to pass in the ocean. She wanted to pass away in her favorite place. She wanted to be with her mommy. "Leave me alone!"
"I can't." Conrad responded. He walked up to her, pulling her up and over his shoulder. Emmi screamed out protests, kicking her feet. "You're drunk, Em, I'm not going to put you down."
Emmi managed to push herself off, hitting the sand with a groan. "Come on, let me help you, come on."
In Emmi's foggy mind, she couldn't figure out why Conrad wanted to help her now after shattering her. She smacked his hand away, pushing herself up. "Just go, okay!"
"I'm not leaving you, Em." Conrad told her honestly.
"But you already did." Emmi responded, the tears starting to come back. "Why didn't you tell me you begged for my brother's blessing? Or that you kissed fucking Belly?"
"Because all I fucking wanted was you, Emmi!" Conrad shouted, tears starting to pool in his eyes. "I kissed Belly in June last year and immediately regretted it, I only wanted you. I've loved you since we were children, Emmi, I've only ever wanted you, our entire lives."
"If I had know you cared so much about me and about us, I would've fought harder." Emmi sobbed. It was true; she wouldn't have officially ended it, she would've fought. "I would've fought for us at prom and at the funeral!" Emmilyn sobbed again. "I would've been there for you through everything."
"I thought you knew!" Conrad cried. "I thought you knew! From the moment we kissed on the gazebo, I thought you knew!"
"Then why, why?" Emmi put a hand to her mouth to choke back another sob. "Why did you throw it all away, why?" Conrad stayed silent, causing Em to become more hysterical. "I thought we loved eachother to the moon and to Saturn!"
"We did." Conrad nodded.
Emmi seemed to piece herself back together as she stared at him. "You did." She corrected. "I still do."
Conrad stared at her silently as she turned, walking back to the house. She managed to get herself to her room, locking the door and flopping down.
She turned herself onto her back, staring at the ceiling as she started to sob again. "I miss you mommy," She cried. "I miss you so much and I need you here with me. I don't think I can go a lifetime without you."
She grabbed the envelope off the floor, hands shaking as she tore it open.
