Specks of light began to break through the dark canopy that hung above us and I instinctively began to look around me anxiously- I didn't want to be hanging around one place for too long. I was worried that demons from my past would catch up with me.
"Its been great talking to you Harry, but I really have to go," I said hurriedly and stood up quickly, brushing the dirt that had accumulated on my jeans. I looked down at the boy to notice that he was pouting slightly and I gave him a lopsided grin, the young lad was extremely charming.
"Why do I feel like this is a one night stand?" He mumbled lightheartedly and I giggled slightly, he was good company. Well, good enough company to forget the crushing sense of helplessness that was looming over me.
"Goodbye Your Majesty, have fun in your cardboard kingdom," I gave him one last smile before departing, walking down the street. Again, I was alone- something that didn't sit well with me.
"Matilda!" I heard a voice shouting behind me, "Mattie!"
I froze in the middle of the street, my whole body paralysed with fear. Memories flooded back, memories that I had suppressed. Images flashed before my eyes, forming something that resembled a horror movie but what scared me most was that those images were merely recollections. I had witnessed those horrible things.
"Matilda," someone was shaking my arm and I was snapped out of my subconscious to see Harry looking at me with a worried expression.
"Why did you call me Mattie?" I whispered, a tear already rolling down my cheek which I hastily wiped away.
Confusion was clear on his face, so I waved him off, walking away hurriedly. I was angry at myself, I had wasted so much time which could have been spent running and what for? To spend time with a scrawny 15 year old.
"Matilda, please wait!" There was a sense of desperation in his voice that made me stop, I had the natural instinct to see what he wanted, "Matilda, don't leave me."
There was a sadness in his eyes which broke my heart, and I smiled sadly at him. He was much taller than I had given him credit for, he stood around a head above me and his limbs were long and slightly lanky.
"Harry I have to go," I mumbled, trying my best to detach myself from this boy. But as much as I hated to admit it, Harry wasn't just some boy. Somehow ,underneath the stars, we had made a friendship.
"We are stronger together, you can't possibly want to be on your own? We're on the streets, there's safety in numbers," he had logic, but I wanted to be by myself. To have time to reflect on everything that had happened to me.
"Harry I can't-" I stopped my sentence when I saw a dark figure in an alleyway, the person disappeared the minute they realised I had seen them. Goosebumps rose on my arms, and I began to shake noticeably.
"Matilda, you ok?" Harry asked nervously, obviously thrown slightly by my sudden change in mood.
"I think its probably best if we stick together," I whispered, still staring at the space where the mysterious figure had been. Was it just a trick of the light? Or something more sinister? Whatever it was, it made me realise that I was a lot safer with a companion who could help me fight off the nightmarish people of the world. Even if it was some 15 year old boy.
So second chapter is up! What do you think? Still no indication of why either of them are on the streets but maybe you'll find out later on ;) these first chapters are quite short, just saying x
