Tanashiri Gyeong had recently moved to the sweaty land of Atlanta, Georgia and was a new student at Cummington High School. He was an anxious teenager who would pick at loose strands on his sweaters, bounce his knee during classes or look down at the ground as he bolted from class to class. He wasn't the friend-making type, so the few friends he did have were very dear to him and he would try his hardest to keep them close. Tanashiri was making his way to his next class when he ran into someone who was literally sprinting down the halls.

"Sorry! Uh," Kuse exclaimed, weaving his way through the crowd of people before feeling his body collide with another, then fall to the floor, "I-I'm sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going."

"It's fine," Tanashiri muttered while picking his backpack off the floor and standing back up, extending his hand out to the male still sitting down.

Kuse gave him an affirmative grin before taking his hand and hoisting himself up, "Again I'm sorry."

"It's okay," Tanashiri pulled his hand away, "I'm Tanash."

Above Tanash's head, a little scale popped up reading: 'Tanashiri: Straight. ❌' Kuse sucked in a breath and let his chest rise as his eyes traveled down to Tanash's face, "My name's Kuse. Nice to meet you. . Officially."

Tanash smiled slightly, "Yeah. . You too," his brows lightened up and he didn't look so much like a downer.

Kuse blinked, but brushed it off, "So, where are you headed?"

"Collins for US History. And you?" Tanash asked.

"My class is right down that hallway. Can we go together?" Kuse asked.

Tanash's smile grew, "Sure! I'd like that."

And with that, a new friendship arose. They chatted on their way to class, making jokes and having the time crunch to get to their next period not seem as important. A new friend. . Nice.

Later that day, Tanash and Kuse had reconnected. Kuse was giving Tanash a tour of the school while introducing the new student to some of his preexisting friends such as Amity, Spade and Brookes. Tanash has also brought his little trio of friends, Valentina and Kaya along. The four of them were approaching the Blackbox of the school, down the hallway that the choir, theatre, orchestra and art classes were.

"So let me give you guys a warning," Kuse began, turning around to face Tanash, Valentina and Kaya while proceeding to walk backwards, "these people can be pretty loud, so if you need to step out, just let me know. Okay?"

There was an array of yeahs, head nods and other responses amongst the other three people. Kuse grinned and then twisted his body back around to face the door of the Blackbox. He placed his hand on the doorknob, then opened it. Inside, there were a couple kids doing monologues for the theatre director, one student having a meltdown in the corner with a friend or two comforting them along with other students scattered across the room talking amongst themselves. Kuse made his way over to other people who were chugging water bottles and sodas for fun to see who could chug the fastest.

"Hey guys!" Kuse began, catching his friends attention, "Meet Tanash, Valentina and Kaya," he introduced, motioning to each person as their name left his mouth, "and guys, this is Brookes, Spade and Amity."

As Kuse was introducing Brookes, the scale over Tanash's head changed, saying: 'Tanashiri. Questioning ❓'. Kuse examined the look on Tanash's face as it went from a nervous expression to a more carefree look, like he were in a trance. Valentina nudged Tanashiri before continuing on with their day.

Tanash and Brookes had hit it off right away. They immediately began to bond, hanging out at each other's houses and posting snaps with the other in it a lot more than anyone else. They had gotten really close, really fast. Right now, Tanash was at Brookes house getting ready for a party that Kuse had invited the whole friend group to. The two were laying on Brookes' bed, on their phones trying to find a playlist to listen to while putting on clothes and stuff.

"Hey, can I come clean to you about something?" Tanash propped his head up, causing Brookes to turn their attention towards the male in front of them.

"Yeah," they shifted slightly to get more comfortable, "what's going on?"

"I uh," Tanash pursed his lips and licked them, "I like you. . Like that."

"Like what?"

"That."

"Oh. . ." Brookes' eyes traveled along the room so that they wouldn't have to face Tanashiri so quickly, "Well . . I like you too."

Tanash's head perked up and his eyes widened. He felt a rush of excitement and energy course through his veins, "Really?"

"Yeah! I-I didn't want to say anything and risk messing up our friendship. . So I didn't," they continued.

Tanash laughed, "I got the balls to say something before you! I'm shocked."

"Ha ha, very funny. Just come here," they rolled their eyes and scooted closer to Tanash.

"What-" The smile began to fade from Tanash's lips, "What are you doing?"

"Can I kiss you? That's-That's what I'm trying to do: kiss you," their voice began to quiver nervously

"Yeah," Tanash smiled widely, "yeah, you can."

And with that, Brookes brought their lips closer to Tanash's and closed the distance between them. Brookes places their hands on Tanash's cheek while getting more and more invested into the kiss. Tanash has his fingers in Brookes' hair and another hand under their chin. They eventually pulled back and had their foreheads pressed against the others

"That-That was nice," Brookes confessed.

"It was," Tanash smiled widely, "I wouldn't mind if we did it against. ."

Brookes chuckled and said, "Me neither," before going in for another kiss and igniting the beginning of a wonderful night that would go so horribly wrong.

Tanash and Brookes walked into the party hand in hand with their friends Kuse, Valentina, Kaya, Amity and Spade. Above Tanash's head, Kuse could see his scale reading: 'Tanashiri. Still Questioning❓Not Straight'. A grin etched onto his face as they all continued to further themselves into the party scene. Brookes and Tanash were laughing and sharing small kisses throughout the night until two hours into the party.

"I-I think we should go," Tanash began, "everything's getting overwhelming."

"Yeah," Brookes' eyes scanned across the room, "we can leave. I'll rally up everyone and you go to the car, okay? I'll walk you out. How does that sound?"

Tanash smiled, "I'd like that," he began to get up, Brookes following shortly behind.

The two were almost out the door when someone else entered in a hoodie and dark clothes. A suspicious weapon was in hand and the face of the person was unrecognizable. The person was right in front of Brookes and Tanash's face, seeing as the person was entering just as they were leaving.

"Scram!" The person yelled while raising a gun.

Brookes' breath hitched and they immediately began to usher Tanash and themself away in a definite hurry. Before they could get far away, there was a loud noise and Brookes' was on the ground. Tanash gasped loudly as he saw blood begin to creep out of Brookes' body, looking around them. Tanash quickly collapsed to his knees and crawled over to his significant other, hands racing over their body to try and revive them.

"Please-Please stay with me," tears began to fill up in Tanash's eyes, "you can't leave me yet. Please, Brookes. . You can't do this to me. Stay!" He shook their body, Brookes getting weaker and weaker by the second.

The shooter had made their way to a different section of the house, people screaming and trying to exit any way they could.

"It's okay. ." Brookes began, "Get out of here. . Make it out, for me."

"Brookes," Tanash laughed humorlessly; desperately, "please don't do this. We can get you out of here!" He got up and started to drag them out of the building.

"Tanash. . Tanash. . Tanashiri!" Their voice got gradually louder with each phrase, them coughing out blood and having it sputter on their shirt as they continued to talk, "It's no use for me. I'm already dead. Just-Just get out safe."

Tears spilled out of Tanash's eyes, "No. . I can get you out of here and to the hospital! We can get you to a safe place! Come on, all you have to do is hold on for me. You can do it. I-I know you can."

"Tanash. ." Brookes' voice got weaker and weaker with each passing moment.

Kaya ran up to the scene, placing a hand on Tanash's shoulder, "Come on. We have to go! We don't have a lot of time."

"We can't leave them!" Tanash exclaimed, shaking Brookes, "Grab their legs, let's get them out of here. We can get them out!"

"No! They're dead! Look!" Kaya exclaimed hastily.

Tanash glanced down at Brookes and saw the lifeless eyes and droopy features, along with feeling the newfound heaviness of the body. They were gone, even in the few seconds a Tanash had looked away, they had passed.

"No!" Tanash's voice rang out with a tone of solid desperation and absolute regret, "They-They can't—" He began to sob, Kaya pulling on his shoulder.

"You have to let go! We have to leave, or else you and I will both end up like they did!" Kaya continued, "We have to leave!"

Eventually getting Brookes' cold body out of Tanash's hand, Kaya dragged him out, meeting up with the rest of the group at a nearby gas station, a safe place where Kuse had informed 911 of the situation a couple blocks down the road.

At the gas station with dim neon lights and the overwhelming smell of two week old chili dogs, the group resided. Tanash had blood splattered all over his front whole Kaya wore some of the same blood on her fingers and arms.

Kuse began to grow worried, "Where-Where's Brookes?"

Tanash let out a heart wrenching sob, "They're-"

"They were the first one to get shot," Kaya finished so that Tanash didn't have to, "They didn't make it out."

Tanash's tears began to flow more consistently as gasps and silence fell over the group.

"Holy shit," Kuse blurted out, "Are-Are you being serious?"

"Of course she's being serious!" Valentina snapped, "Why would she joke about our friend dying?" She gulped, taking a step back.

"I-I—" Kuse's voice drifted off, "I can't believe they're gone. ."

It was quiet aside from the air vents and Tanash's soft, yet evident sobs. This night; this moment; this very second, would change the trajectory of their lives forever.
