Chapter Twenty-Three

Aiden had just started to open the door when he heard his name. His hand paused on the doorknob. He felt suddenly like he was going to do the wrong thing and he wanted to swing open the door, but something inside of him stopped his hand from moving. He needed to hear what they were saying.

"Aiden must have done it," a man said. Aiden knew without a doubt that it was Orson speaking.

Aiden scrunched his eyebrows together as he listened to his voice. He really didn't like the man.

"We don't know that yet," a woman with a soft voice replied. Aiden decided that it must have been Adelaide. "He might have had nothing to do with it."

The word might sent uneasy feelings through Aiden's mind. He really thought Adelaide had liked him.

"Does it matter who did it?" a voice with a British accent asked. "Pierce is the one who cheated on me."

Eden was crying. He could hear it in her voice. She sounded broken. Aiden felt her tears like a stab wound in his chest. He wanted to open the door and hug her and tell her that he was sorry. He hated that he had a part to play in her pain.

"It does matter!" Orson barked out.

"It wasn't Aiden," Oliver told his father with resolve. "Aiden would never do anything like that."

He sounded so sure. It broke Aiden's heart. He didn't know how he was going to tell him the truth. He just had to remind himself that Oliver would understand once he knew the whole story.

"How can you possibly know?" Orson asked. "How long have you even known this boy?"

"He didn't do this. Stop blaming Aiden when the real person you should be mad at is Pierce! He was the one who created this mess!"

"Pierce has a very stressful job-'

"Stop defending him!" Oliver yelled out. "Can't you see what he's done? Look at Eden! How can you defend him!"

Aiden pulled open the door. He had to stop the fighting. He knew what he would see before he even looked, but the image before him still made his breath catch in his throat. Orson was standing next to the table, the anger coming off of him in strong waves. His eyes were wide with fury. Adelaide sat at the table with eyeliner falling down her cheeks and an arm around Rosie.

The reminder of Rosie's part in all of this hit him hard. She must have felt responsible. She was crying fiercely, with her curls falling in front of her face and somewhat obscuring the view of the make-up that had smudged under her eyes.

Eden sat on the other side of the table, her one hand wrapped around her stomach and the other covering her face. Aiden knew what expression would be under her delicate fingers and he didn't want to see it.

"What's going on?" Aiden asked. He knew perfectly well what was going on, but he was hoping that his presence would cause a change of subject.

"We are leaving," Orson replied. His gaze was stuck on Oliver.

"We aren't leaving Eden," Adelaide retorted.

"She can come with us," Orson replied. He motioned towards the crying woman. "Stay in our hotel room tonight."

Eden revealed her face. She nodded.

The only sound in the room was Rosie's cries.

"Eden can stay with us," Oliver said. He took a step closer to Eden.

"Stay out of this, Oliver," Orson barked at him. "It's your fault that this happened in the first place."

"My fault?" Oliver gaped at him. "How could this possibly be my fault?"

Orson pointed an accusing finger at Aiden. "You brought this snake into our lives."

Oliver gasped. He took a long step towards his father but the table stopped him from going any further. "Don't you dare talk about my boyfriend like that."

"Do you think that it's a coincidence that the photo showed up on the website of a company he works for?" Orson asked.

The entire family turned their heads towards Aiden. Aiden could only stare back. He couldn't say anything, the words were stuck in his throat.

"Aiden is the most honest person that I've ever known. He has nothing to do with this," Oliver told Orson.

Oliver stepped over to Aiden and linked their hands. Aiden wish that Oliver was right. He wished so hard that he had never gone to coffee with Rosie that day. He wished that he had never caught her in that alley. He wished that he hadn't called Brian that day. Most of all, however, he wished that he was the good person that Oliver believed him to be.

"Leave Aiden alone," Eden cried out. "He didn't do this!"

The family was silent. Adelaide avoided everyone's eyes and Orson seemed to not be able to take his off of Aiden. Aiden couldn't meet his gaze and so he cast his gaze down to the floor. Sweat pooled on his forehead and he fought against his urge to run.

Adelaide stood quickly and straightened her skirt. "We need to leave." She waved over at Eden. "You can come with us if you wish, sweetheart, otherwise go with Oliver."

Everyone stood but Rosie. Adelaide tilted her head towards the crying girl. "Come on, Rosie."

Rosie shook her head. "I'm sorry," she blurted out between sobs. "I didn't want this."

Everyone seemed to take a step closer to her. "What are you talking about?" Orson asked. His tone suggested a warning.

"What do you have to be sorry about?" Adelaide asked timidly.

"I knew that he was cheating," Rosie explained. She finally looked up from her lap. "I heard him on the phone with a woman."

Eden shook her head sadly at her. "Oh sweetheart, that doesn't make this your fault. Pierce did this to himself."

Aiden watched Oliver. His expression turned to sadness. Aiden squeezed his fingers.

Rosie stood abruptly. "It is my fault!" she cried.

There was a moment of confusion that made everyone pause. "What have you done?" Adelaide whispered.

Rosie took a moment to compose herself. She raked her fingers through her delicate curls as she spoke. "I hired a private investigator to follow Pierce. I wanted to make sure that he wasn't doing anything bad. I never, I never expected anything to come back."

Aiden felt pure dread. Rosie was going to tell them everything, he realised. He wanted to bolt. He bit his lip to stop himself from pulling Oliver by the hand and dragging him out onto the street.

"You did what?!" Orson hissed at her.

"You hired a PI?" Eden asked. "Why didn't you tell me?"

Rosie's fingers still combed her hair nervously. The curls were all but destroyed now and hung in clumps around her shoulders. "I didn't think he would find anything! I didn't know what to do with the photos but I knew that I had to find out who the woman was. I should have destroyed them all that moment but I really wanted to know who she was."

"The PI must have leaked the photo," Eden concluded. She took a deep breath in and out. "I'm not mad at you, Rosie."

Rosie shook her head. "The photo wasn't leaked by the PI." Rosie's big, sad eyes turned to Aiden. She sent him an accusing look. "I gave the photos to Aiden."

Aiden turned to Oliver and his boyfriend was already looking at him, with wide eyes and a mouth gaped open. He shook his head, almost as if he didn't believe what Rosie had said. Aiden tried to say something but those damn words were stuck again and he choked on them. Oliver dropped his hand. Aiden tried to reach for him but Oliver took a few steps back, his wide, betrayed eyes not leaving Aiden's face.

"You gave the photos to a photographer from a gossip magazine?" Orson barked out at Rosie. "What kind of idiot did I raise?"

"I gave them to him to destroy!" She looked at Aiden. "I didn't think that you would do this."

"The PI had a copy, he-he must have," Oliver proclaimed but was cut off by Rosie.

"The photo I gave Aiden had the crease down the middle."

Aiden felt tears pool in his eyes. "I didn't mean to-"

Adelaide and Eden both gasped. Adelaide covered her mouth with her hand. Her eyes were wider than he had ever seen them. "You-You really did this?"

Eden shook her head at Aiden. "I really thought you were a good guy."

"I-I'm so sorry," Aiden told them. He ran from the room. He heard Oliver calling out his name, but he didn't turn around, he couldn't bring himself to.

He cried silently the entire cab ride to the hotel. He tried to hold it together until he made it to the hotel room, and only just made it. He sat down on the couch with his head in his hands. He flinched when the hotel room door opened and slammed almost instantly.

"How could you?" Oliver screamed. Aiden pulled his head up to see Oliver. His eyes were filled with tears and his mouth was angry. He stood with clenched fists above him. "I trusted you!" he yelled.

Aiden stood from the chair. He was face to face with Oliver. "I didn't mean for this to happen."

"How much did they pay you, hey?" Oliver asked. "How much was selling me out worth?"

"I never meant for them to get published, I promise you!"

Oliver paced back and forth. "How did they get published then?"

"I sent them to Brian to see if Pierce really was the man in the photo," he tried to explain.

"You sent them to your boss?"

"Not to publish, just to look at."

Oliver stopped pacing. His words were drenched in hurt, "I don't believe you."

Aiden tried to reach out for Oliver, but he avoided his hand. "I'm so sorry, I was going to tell you."

Oliver shook his head. "I thought you were different."

"I am different."

"I defended you to my entire family! I didn't think for a second that you were involved in this whatsoever and then I'm completely blindsided. Can you even imagine how that made me feel?"

"I'm sorry, Oliver. I was going to tell you, I really was."

"Do you expect me to believe that?"

"Yes." Right before his eyes, Aiden watched the trust between them break and fall into a thousand pieces. He really thought that when Oliver heard the truth that he would believe it. He didn't even consider that Oliver would think that he was lying. He remembered the story Adelaide had told him about Luca and the cameras. He realised that he had become Oliver's worst fear.

Oliver shook his head. "I don't."

"I'm not Luca. I didn't do this on purpose, Oliver."

"How on earth do you know about Luca?"

Aiden looked down at his feet. "Your mother told me."

"Of course she did," he replied. Oliver started pacing again. "I can't trust any of you."

"You can trust me, Oliver!" Aiden grabbed Oliver's arm before he had time to pull away. "I'm telling you the truth!"

"I'm glad that we came here, Aiden, you know why?" A single tear slid down Oliver's cheek. "I know who you are now. You win."

Aiden could only stand, frozen in place, as Oliver stormed out of the room and slammed the front door closed. He stood, his chest heaving and tears rolling down his face, for an unknown amount of time. His heart was broken, but even worse, he had broken Oliver's trust and he wasn't sure if he would ever gain it back.
