The Solution's Target
After she had left the garage, she had made her way back up to her room. She had stayed awake until she heard Edgar open his room door and close it. (F/n) had continued to refuse sleep until she had heard Edgar finish in the shower and reenter his room for the night. Even after this, she had waited some time before going to sleep, since she wanted to minimize the possibility of Edgar coming into her room at night while she was asleep.
When she had awoken in the morning, it was to the sound of Edgar telling her to get up. She had groggily opened her eyes and rolled out of bed, landing on her feet. (F/n) had changed into a beige v-neck, black shorts and black flip-flops. To add to this, she had grabbed her maroon jacket just in case she had to make her way over to the workers' house. Of course, shorts and flip-flops weren't necessarily the best clothing choices for autumn, but she spent most of her time inside a heated house.
Thus, after changing, she had stepped out of her room and had seen Edgar leaning against the wall across from her door. He was wearing black pants, a light brown v-neck and black slippers. His hair was tied up in a red ribbon. When she had exited her room, though, he had pushed himself off the wall and had headed off towards the stairs. From there, the two of them had breakfast and had proceeded to head to his workshop.
As of now, though, (f/n) was heading towards the workers' house to give them a new order list from Edgar. The order contained the requests of two black and orange wooden airplanes, fifteen pumpkin pie lollipops and two plush dolls with witch costumes. Personally, she wanted to try one of the lollipops, but Howard hadn't let her into the kitchen where they were made. Hopefully, Edgar would step in and let her try one before the holiday ended.
Before she entered the workers' house, she stopped on the dirt path and focused her attention on something that she had failed to notice before. There, on the right side of the house, was a garage. Of course, the workers would have transportation of their own. The problem would be getting around Howard to search the garage. Perhaps, he had a key to one of the possible cars in the garage, though, since he was the head worker.
With this in mind, she entered the workers' house and closed the doors behind her. She searched for Howard, but the man found her first like usual. He towered over her, as he asked, "So, what brings you here today?"
She held out the list, and he took it promptly. He looked over it swiftly before giving a quick nod. With that he turned away from her and began to instruct the other workers of their new tasks. (F/n) took that as her cue to go. Before she exited the house, though, she examined Howard to see if he had any key on his person. When she took notice of no key, she concluded that it could be in one of his pants' pockets. How would she take a key from his pockets without seeming suspicious? There was one way that she could think of, and it wasn't complex by any means.
On her way out, she purposefully tripped herself. In the process of doing so, she cried out to get the attention of Howard. Thankfully to her benefit, Howard swiftly turned around and ran towards her to catch her. She had to restrain herself from smirking. When he caught her, she pushed all her weight against him, so that they would hit the floor. This did indeed happen, and she was now pressed up against his chest.
Using this position to her advantage, she pressed her hands against his front pants' pockets to feel for a key. Of course, she just made it seem like she was trying to get up. Sadly, she felt no key. It looked like she would have to somehow get into the workers' garage without any of them noticing, especially Howard.
Getting back onto her feet, she held out her right hand to help Howard up. He rejected her offer and got up on his own. The brown-haired male sighed and focused his attention back on the other workers. She just muttered, "Thanks," to him, since he had tried to catch her, before she left the house. Once she closed the door behind her, she made her way back to the main house.
Soon, she arrived back in Edgar's workshop. She headed over to the bench by the window. The moment she sat down, Edgar turned around in his chair and faced her. His expression was unreadable, as he rested his chin in the palm of his left hand.
"I have some interesting news, (f/n). Did you want to know what it is?" he asked, keeping his neutral countenance. His right fingers tapped against his right thigh, while an unfinished Halloween themed rabbit rested on his desk. Its orange glass eyes seemed to stare at her, as though it supported whatever words were about to leave Edgar's lips.
"You're going to tell me regardless, aren't you?" she responded, crossing her legs on the bench and leaning back against the window frame.
He smirked a bit before answering, "Of course, I am. Now, did you know (f/n) that one of the maids said she found her door unlocked last night when she went to get a glass of water from the kitchen? Moreover, she clearly remembers locking the door before she went to bed. When I asked the other house staff, they informed me that she always locks her bedroom door before she goes to sleep. So, they were quite shocked to learn that it was unlocked. As for the maid, herself, she was terrified. What I want to know is why her door was unlocked? Was it another member of the house staff or a crafts worker?
"I asked all my staff, and all of them stated that they hadn't unlocked her door. Now, I did suspect that one of them was lying, but I happened upon some other interesting information. One, of the house staff, told me that they saw someone hurrying from the lower west wing hall earlier that evening. Likewise, they confirmed that the individual was female. So, (f/n), did you want to validate this statement?"
(F/n) tried to act like she didn't know what he was talking about, but her mind had frozen. She had made sure to check that no one was in the halls when she headed upstairs. Still, someone had seen her, or at least that's what Edgar just told her. Could he be making that fact up? He had to be, since she hadn't seen anyone when she raced upstairs quietly. The male was just trying to trick her again. Thinking that this was case, she regained her confidence. "No, I have no idea what they saw, but it wasn't me if that's what you're implying. Besides, why would I have opened a house staff member's door?"
"That's what I want to know," he replied, now standing up from his chair. He started to move towards her, and his steps were slow. His countenance remained undecipherable.
Edgar was trying to intimidate her, but she would stand her ground. She had to, or she might lose forever her opportunity to go into town by herself. Sitting up straight, she rested her hands on the bench and met his gaze head on. When he reached her, he leaned forward and placed his right index finger under her chin. He lifted up her chin and analyzed her eyes.
"Don't lie to me, (f/n)," he stated calmly, but she could see a flash of anger in his visible green eye.
"I wasn't lying to you. I honestly have no idea what that individual was talking about. I was in my room last night so back off," she defiantly said.
Removing his finger from her chin, he stood up straight again and frowned. "When I mentioned this interesting news, you seemed to freeze. For a moment there was worry in your eyes like you had been discovered. Your lips had parted ever so slightly, as though you wanted to curse out loud for being careless. Now, tell me if those are signs of you not knowing. Or, you can tell me why you unlocked that maid's door."
"I'm done listening to this," she mumbled, as she was about to get up from her seat. Edgar signaled her to stay where she was at, but she only glared at him. Thus, she stood up and went to walk around him. Before she could take a step forward, he pushed her back down onto the bench. Her back hit the window frame, and she could tell that a bruise would form there later.
"I wanted to believe that you would answer and tell me the truth. I desired to think that you would explain your actions to me and that you would apologize. I would've forgiven you, (f/n). Instead, though, you lied to me and are continuing to do so. You're trying to get away rather than give me a reason for your actions. I went to the lower west wing myself and found another door unlocked. None of the house staff ever unlock the door to the garage, since they have no need to do so. They know that they can ask the chauffeur to give them a ride into town if they need one. Why can't you just tell me why you want to get away from me?" he questioned, his tone hurt and disappointed.
Glancing at her lap, she clenched the bench cushion with her hands. She wouldn't let his tone sway her. If she had truly hurt his feelings, then she would apologize later. Right now, though, she would resist giving into him. So, she remained silent and kept her gaze off of him.
"So, you're not going to answer me?" he muttered out.
Staying silent, she continued to stare at her lap. She soon heard footsteps and the sound of the workshop door being opened. (F/n) expected him to walk out of his workshop, but she heard no movement after the door was open. Instead, she felt a heavy tension fill the room.
