Prologue
"And that's it for this school year. I sincerely hope that you've enjoyed it, and I wish you a happy summer break." Miss Russell, the homeroom teacher of my class, announced as the clock on the wall struck 10 AM. The ringing sound of the school bell filled the halls, and students hurriedly packed up their bags as they couldn't wait for the much-awaited summer break any longer.
I was sitting next to my deskmate, Rachel. She had already stowed all her notebooks and her pencil case into a small tote bag and was starting to lift up the chair, preparing to leave. She was eager to get home and pack her suitcases, since she and her family were going to Greece the following day.
"Hey, Callie! What are you waiting for?" Rachel exclaimed, quite surprised that I hadn't stood up yet.
"Yeah, I'm coming..." My voice was rather quiet, almost blending into the background noise of the students chatting with each other. I wasn't excited for the break, far from it. After my parents had gotten divorced, neither of them had enough money for any nice vacations, and I would be going to a summer camp instead. I've never been to one, and I was kind of scared of what could happen there. I shook off the thought and got up from my seat. I grabbed my backpack and turned my head towards my friend, Rachel.
"Why do you seem so... uninterested?" Rachel asked me, her tone showing obvious concern.
"Oh, I'm not really going to do anything interesting this time. I'm just going to a summer camp," I muttered, my voice still pretty quiet and barely audible.
"I've been to a few before. They're fun, actually! You get to meet a lot of new people and play a lot of cool games."
"Not anything I'd be interested in, but why not give it a try, I suppose," I replied back. Rachel's words seemed to calm me down a bit.
"Alright, my bus will arrive in seven minutes. I better get going. See you next year and enjoy your summer camp!" Rachel mumbled as she rushed out of the classroom.
"See ya!" I lifted up my chair and left the classroom as well.
As I stepped out into the courtyard, the familiar hustle of the end-of-year excitement filled the air. Groups of friends chatted, making plans for the summer, while others eagerly discussed their upcoming vacations. It was hard not to feel a twinge of envy as I watched them, knowing my own summer wouldn't be filled with swimming in the sea or five-star hotels.
Nevertheless, I squared my shoulders and made my way towards the school gates. The warm breeze carried the scent of freshly cut grass, and the distant sound of children playing echoed in the air. Despite my initial reluctance, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation building within me.
As I walked, my thoughts drifted to the summer camp awaiting me. I tried to push aside any lingering doubts and focus on Rachel's reassuring words. Perhaps this experience would be an opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone, make new friends, and try new things.
I walked up to the bus station. My bus was supposed to arrive in two minutes. The bag I carried was pretty heavy, carrying all the leftover notebooks and textbooks I had, so I sat down on one of the benches and waited.
Soon enough, the bus appeared and stopped by. I got in alongside a couple of other students I knew were from different grades at my school. Shortly after, the bus started up and drove away.
Once I got home, I was immediately greeted by my dad. He was holding a phone in his right hand and was impatiently waiting for me. "Hey, Callie. I got the dates wrong, the summer camp doesn't start on 11th July but instead on 1st July."
"Are you serious?! That's only in two days!" I spouted out. It angered me quite a lot. I still had mixed thoughts about the summer camp and I wasn't ready for the it, let alone it being this early.
"Watch your tone, young lady" He would always say something along those lines. It was getting on my nerves. "I need you to get prepared for it. Your mom wants to see you before you leave. We will visit her tomorrow."
"Sorry dad, and of course. I'd like to see her aswell!" I smiled at the thought. "I'll get going now!" I climbed up the stairs and went into my room.
I closed the door, careful not to slam it shut. I sat down on my bed snd picked up my phone, dialing my best friend's number. Julia picked it up quickly.
"Hi Callie! What's up?" Her cheerful voice filled my ears.
"Turns out that the stupid camp starts this saturday, so I can't meet you then"
"Oh, well.... How long is it? Maybe we could meet afterwards."
"It lasts three weeks. Haven't I told you already?" My tone sounded quite annoyed. Not by Julia, but the thought of the camp being this long.
"Oh, my bad! Well im that case I'm sorry. We're kinda busy for the rest of the week." Julia spoke in a tone that sounded a bit disappointed.
"It's fine.... I guess I will have to wait"
