Chapter Two ~ Rules of Play

A void is a peculiar thing.

It was so sudden. All senses were deprived. No light reached the blonde's brilliant blue eyes. No sound could be picked up by her pointed elf-like ears, causing them to create their own sound: a high-pitched whine. Her skin felt nothing. Nothing of temperature, or any sensation. Zelda had never thought that she could feel air, but suddenly being deprived of it made her skin tingle.

Sensory deprivation burned, despite her being unable to feel the burn.

The princess pressed her arms and legs against invisible shackles. Although she couldn't feel anything, she was certain that she wasn't moving.

Panic.

Zelda tried to call out. Did she? The high-pitched whine in her ears upon immediate deprivation of sound drowned it out.

Zelda tried to cry. Were her eyes open or closed? She couldn't tell. She couldn't even see blackness. Her eyes were only met with oblivion. Was she crying? Her tingling face could not feel the hot, wet roll of tears.

Zelda tried to breathe.

She almost could.

Though her senses could not feel anything outside her body, her lungs burned. Angry fire scratched at her throat and burned at her lungs. Clawing at nothing, fighting for fresh air. The struggling only made the scalding, abrasive fire excited. Her chest was hot. Not warm, not heated, hot. And her throat felt as though it was being worn away with sandpaper. Scratched at. Clawed at. Left raw and bleeding as boiling water was poured into her lungs, drowning her.

Just as suddenly as it started, it stopped.

The blonde had cried out with a desperate breath, only to be met with air as cooling as ice cubes into a drink. Like a summer's rain over a forest fire, the burning was doused. The non-existent sizzle of coals was relief enough, and the thirsty girl took another breath, twice as deep. Her throat was soothed, and the dying warmth was washed away, as though the air was a glass of cold milk.

A third breath.

A voice.

"Welcome, Zelda. To Capture the Flag."

She couldn't move. Couldn't respond. Messages from the goddesses, or even from other Hylians, weren't unusual. But there was nothing. As though the princess had clipped through the game map and into the oblivion beyond, she could not hear.

But sure enough, there was someone out there.

"Before you play, allow me to explain the game."

Zelda did not respond. Was it fear? Compliance? Shock? She did not know.

"The players will be divided into two teams. The Green Team, and the Red Team. Each team will be given six flags, scattered across the map. Each team will be spawned in on opposite ends of the map. The objective of the game is to reach each of the opposing team's flags, take it down, and replace it with one of your own."

"Huh?"

The confusion was setting in. The realizations and the panic began to flood the void, and they could finally reach Zelda.

"But, there is a catch," the voice was unfazed, "The game will be played in a fight-to-the-death style. Both survivalistic, and kill-or-be-killed."

Explaining the game was futile, as the long-haired princess was sinking into a panic. Unable to hear the oddly-familiar female voice in her alarm.

"Rules of play:

"The game is survivalistic, you must survive to the end.

"You may attack the other players.

"As a matter of fact, you may kill the other players.

"There are idle monsters wandering around the map. They can attack both teams.

"You cannot move the flags.

"You must lower your opponent's flag to the ground, and raise your flag to the top for it to count.

"You cannot leave the map."

Zelda only managed to catch the last three points in her confusion, as the existentialism of being trapped in a world of absolute nothingness and nihilty was finally setting in.

"The game starts in three...

"Two...

"One..."
