Chapter 43, Distant
THIRD POV
"Oi!"
Haide shrieked but tossed for Kira anyway. As usual, she's panicking more than she usually does. The coaches benched Shirome and Ameri for a while when they reached the 4th set. The small setter wasn't pleased at first, but Guren gave her a pleading look that says 'Rest. We don't want history to repeat itself.' He evoked the Shiratorizawa match.
Haide is a good setter. Everyone in the team knows that- but unfortunately, they can't do something for her clumsiness. Little things tend to make her panic and mess up anything she does.
Their libero caught it and Atsumu tossed it to their ace. Shirome frowned when Haide stumbled for the receive, leaving Leki to cover for it. Kira rolled her eyes and tossed for Aoi. Sadly, it was blocked by Suna.
Ameri released a frustrated sigh and repeatedly banged her head to the wall behind the bench. Shirome rubbed her temples with her index finger and thumb. Guren, Ichiro, and Kuro sweatdropped.
Guren asked for a time out when they reached 23-19 with Inarizaki leading. If they won this, they will get tied up with Fushichou. The on court players approached Guren who had his arms crossed and Kuro who looked annoyed but still was handing towels and bottles.
"Haide, don't panic. They're just players like you," Guren sighed.
Her eyes glistened with tears, "B-But..they make me anxious."
Ichiro and Guren softened at the sight of her stopping tears from flowing down. Kira looked away with a soft scoff, not wanting to see her at a vulnerable state.
Shirome sent a small wave to Atsumu who peeked at her with Suna infront of him. He grinned widely only to be smacked on the back by his twin, Suna stumbled forward as collateral. The silver miya sent her a slightly apologetic look before forcing Atsumu to focus on what the coach was saying. Suna just grumbled.
Haide whimpered and looked at the ground when Shirome approached her. Her captain crossed her arms, "Haide. Look at me."
The tangerine setter slowly looked up to see Shirome smiling softly, "I know it can be unnerving, but it will be nice if you don't fall into swivet over things that make you consternated. Just play like you normally do. I'm sorry that it's making you play differently, but then again, you play similarly like you do when we have practice. Regulate your nervousness, okay?"
Haide's brain stung by the deep words, slightly unable to process what she meant. But nonetheless, she nodded and put on a confident smile.
"Thank you, Furumi-san," She gave her a thumbs up and nodded at Guren, indicating that she's fine to go.
"You better not be gauche this time—especially when captain made it crystal to you," Kira narrowed her eyes at the orange head.
"Y-Yes ma'am!" Haide stammered and saluted.
The game finally continued and Fushichou with the exception of Shirome was surprised at Haide's sudden improvement. She was extremely calm that it almost frightened her teammates. Her eyes became solid and her muscles were at ease, only stiffening when she gave the spikers' meticulous tosses.
They were at matchpoint, 27-26 with Inarizaki leading and the ones who previously scored.
Atsumu's eye twitched when Haide was able to receive his twin's spike with ease. Kira went for the ball and tossed it to Haide.
She spiked it— but it was blocked by Suna and Atsumu.
"Damn it!" She whined and Kira's eyes twitched at her but not at the blockers.
Atsumu snickered when Haide shot him a glare. Suna rolled his eyes and retreated to the bench.
"Osamu, get your twin before he does something stupid," Suna boredly told the silver head.
Osamu pulled Atsumu's collar from behind as he dragged him to their bench. Kira did the same with Haide but with her hand.
"It's alright we'll win them next time. Captain, you can now enter the next match," Guren clapped as Ichiro took the notes when Kuro helped the girls (with a frown of course).
Shirome stretched her neck, "Haide-chan, is it okay?"
"What? What do you mean?" Haide confusedly asked.
"I was wondering if you had fun, so I wanted to ask if it's okay for me to go on court in exchange of you," Shirome gave her a gentle smile.
Haide blushed, "N-N-No!! You're clearly the better setter—but I had fun, so it's okay!" She slightly shrieked out.
"Your tosses surprised me. I almost didn't match to it," Kira muttered as she dried her face with a towel.
Haide's eyes widened, "Kira-chan....just complimented me?" She mumbled.
Kira threw her towel on the tangerine's face and scowled, "Don't get any ideas. You still need to get better."
"Right," Haide squeaked.
Shirome silently laughed and met eyes with Kita as she looked away from the team. She gave him a sweet smile which he returned with a small one. Suna's eyes widened when he saw his captain holding a slight blush and stumbled to tease him.
This is it. This is the moment I can finally make fun of Kita-san. Suna slightly cried out of joy in his mind.
"Oh? Kita-san, you're blushing. Is it because of that pretty chick?" Suna michievously smirked.
Inarizaki turned to their captain, surprised that what Suna said is exactly what Kita looks like right now. Atsumu and Osamu dramatically gasped.
Kita's smile dropped and so did his blush. He looked at Suna with a stoic face, "Pretty chick? Do you think of my cousin that way, Suna?"
Suna froze.
"Wait, I mean–" He stammered for an excuse. Kita just countered his attempt at teasing.
"Look who's blushing now," Kita had a small, sly smirk as he stared at Suna who looked slightly flustered.
Atsumu patted Suna's back, "It's okay, we understand."
Osamu put his hand on Suna's shoulder and nodded, "We got you man. We'll help you talk to her later."
Suna's eyes twitched, "What the fuck?? Get away from me, I will not get caught up with your dumb twin and dumber twin antics."
The dark brunette pushed them away as Atsumu wiggled his brows. Osamu smirked at him, "Suna's got a little crush."
"Huh? No–" He sighed, frowning because his plan of making fun of Kita didn't work. He was the one made fun of instead.
"What are you even teasing me for, Suna? She's my cousin," Kita put his hands on his hips, "Or do you like her?"
"I don't even know her," Suna rolled his eyes.
Atsumu chuckled, "I do-"
"Of course you do," Osamu sarcastically said while drinking from his bottle of water.
"Why you little shi–," Atsumu gripped his twin's collar, Osamu gripped his twin's neck with both hands, his bottle on the floor.
"Go ahead. Fight infront of many people," Kita narrowed his eyes at the twins, a dark aura surrounding him.
The twins froze and pulled away from each other. Suna snapped a picture of their scared faces.
"I hafta get on the game now, so both of you better do great. Unlike your performance in practices. You too, Suna," Kita sighed and proceeded to walk to the court with the other members trailing behind him.
"Wait why me?" Suna frowned and rolled his eyes at the twins.
Shirome gave a sly smile to Kita, who returned it with a challenging one. Suna squinted his eyes at her.
He looked at Shirome who was having a mini stare off with Kita. Suna wondered what was stunning about her. That thought, however, was answered when she noticed him staring.
She smiled at him with eyes closed as if saying 'hi'. His eyes slightly widened and he looked away— his heart stopped for a while.
Oh great. She's having me as one of the many guys who falters under her charm. Suna sarcastically said in his head.
The referee blew his whistle and started the final set.
