Threats
❤️ This is for @enairisbsask Thanks for all your sweet words and support! ❤️
"Be true to your word, Arya. This man is no good for you", the voice whispered in my head.
I quickly let go of his hand and brought them close to my body and I could tell he was disappointed by my movement. I could still feel his hand like phantom pain around my hand so I flexed my fingers under the table to ward off those feelings whilst giving him a tight-lipped smile.
I reminded myself of the plan; don't accommodate yourself for him - he has to talk. Don't let him be in control of the conversation. And don't get emotionally involved. However, I couldn't force him to talk straight away - I would play along with him for a bit.
"This is the plan I have set out in order to help you. I will now be asking you personal questions - you do not have to answer them if it gets uncomfortable. For every question, I would like you to write down an answer. Understand?"
He nodded, sitting forward in his chair, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. He held his hand out for the pen and paper. I complied as placed a notepad in his hand and rummaged through my pencil case for a pen. As I held it out for him, he wrapped his fingers around the pen and my index finger and tugged it softly. I yanked my finger back as if I had been burned and glared at him.
He chuckled, a deep throaty laugh that sent delicious shivers throughout my body. It was as if he knew about my vow to ignore him and he was playing games with me. He was like a tidal wave, beautiful from afar, but dangerous the closer you got until one day you get submerged by its mighty force - and there is no going back. Fighting against these feelings was like swimming against the current. Lucky for me, I was a good swimmer and I was determined to get to safety.
I brushed off his effects and got to work. Flipping through my book, I opened a list of questions and started to ask them, giving him a break in between to write an answer.
"Firstly, I want you to write down anything about yourself that you're willing to tell me or think I should now".
"Tell me about your medical history".
"What is your family history and do you have any relationships?"
I ignored the flutter on my heart as he looked up and gave me a low sensual smile at the word relationships and then turned his attention back to the paper.
"Tell me something you find frightening"
There was a pause after I said this. He looked at me contemplatively as if he didn't have anything that scared him before he wrote a one-word answer.
"What makes you happy?"
"What things do you like?"
He put down the pen and looked at me for that question. He tilted his head towards me as if gesturing to me. I scoffed. As if I was going to fall for that. I opened my mouth to ask another question when a guard rapped on the window to say my time was up.
I took the paper off him and placed it with my stuff walking out without a second glance or a goodbye. This was the last session of this week which came as both a relief and a sense of longing.
Again, I was going to sneak out the paper he wrote on and leave a random paper in his file instead. Sam was probably not allowed to look through his file as she didn't treat him so I could get away with it. She watched me with less scrutiny today and I successfully hid the paper in my bag amongst sanitary products.
I looked at my watch. It was quarter past six PM and the date with Karl was at seven so I had to leave within less than half an hour. I decided to spend that time in the office doing paperwork and writing up notes. Sam didn't bother disturbing me this time, but she would often glance back at me to see what I was doing.
After I was finished and packed up, I headed out of the office when suddenly there was a flurry of noise and Nurse Carter entered in a rush.
"Arya, can I talk to you quickly? We can talk in the observation room" She said whilst pulling me along with her anyway. We enter the observation room and I place my bag down on the table. I noticed with a start, that there was the massive one-way glass and that Malik was staring straight which was at us which made me shift uncomfortably. Nurse Carter stood facing me with her back to Malik, leaving me facing him feeling very exposed.
"Can't we talk elsewhere?" I asked annoyed.
"No this is the only place we can discuss this", she replied firmly.
She began to quiz me about Malik and if he had told me anything important. I answered her questions quickly, lying when necessary. The topic then shifted to other questions and I could feel the time going closer to seven.
"Nurse Carter", I interrupted. "I appreciate the conversation, but I need somewhere to be at seven".
"Oooh, where do you have to be? Is it a date? With who?" She asked eagerly. I rubbed my forehead. She could be really nice but come across too strong. I answer her regardless.
"Yes it's a date", I sighed. "With Karl".
She squealed and started talking about how she knew that there was something there between us because she saw us together once. My attention, however, wasn't on her. Rather it was on him.
I could feel the weight of his gaze even through the one-way glass. I tried to shake off my unease. There was no way Malik could see me, it was impossible. I shifted to the right slightly. Nurse Carter didn't seem to notice anything. She continued to talk about how important first dates were and how to make a good impression. I peeked through the side of my eyes through my eyelashes. He was no longer looking at me but seemed preoccupied with something else. I sighed in relief.
"Arya?" Nurse Carter was waving her hand in my face to get my notice.
"Yes, sorry, what were you saying?" I asked, tearing my attention away from him.
"Where is the date?"
"At the inn, Meyer's inn"
"Oh, that's really sweet. That's the one my husband proposed to me at. Lucky you. For a first date, that's pretty good. What time did Karl say?"
I zoned out once again, my mind on Malik. His normal calm demeanour switched to something more lethal. He seemed to be clenching his fists and I could see the angry, protruding veins on his hands as he gripped the edge of the table. Apart from that, he looked completely normal. He couldn't hear us, right?
I realised Nurse Carter was waiting for an answer so I reminded her that it was at seven.
Suddenly, his gaze turned to me. He stared straight into my eyes. I felt the blood rush out of my face. There was no denying it. He could somehow see me. How else would he know exactly where I was standing? His face twisted into a dangerous smirk, his eyes never leaving mine.
"Tonight," he mouthed. "I'll see you".
I stepped back. He couldn't get out. He couldn't hear me. He couldn't see me. It was impossible. The self-denial overtook my emotions along with fear.
"At seven", he continued.
He shouldn't be able to hear me. How could he have heard me? This room was soundproof. I felt dizzy with fear and possibilities. He could hear things he shouldn't. He could see things he shouldn't. He could harm someone without touching them. The biology wasn't adding up. Who was he?
What was he?
"Arya, are you alright?" Nurse Carter grabbed my hand. "You look really pale. I think you should get Dr Patel to have a look at you".
"I'm fine, I'm good. Don't worry. I'm just nervous about the date that's all", I choked out. I could feel his amusement from here and he waved a few fingers at me, clearly enjoying my squirming.
"I'm so sorry Nurse Carter. I'll have to catch you later". I picked up my bag and quickly walked out of the room, feeling his stare boring into my back.
I would have to warn the guards. He could never escape from here.
So how was it?
This was the extract in the welcome chapter but edited.
