The Future?

The year was 2115. That's right, 100-years in the future. The world was at peace, mostly. There weren't any wars, technology and medicine had advanced, and most of the world was educated. In the futuristic city of Tokyo, Japan, there were flying cars, jet packs, and many other advancements. Of course nature was left untouched.

Working in a lab outside of the city, a young Japanese woman, who looked to be in her late twenties or early thirties, was working on inventing the first ever working Time Machine. She had been working for almost sixteen hours straight and was only running on coffee and ramen noodles. "Armost done," she muttered as she put a screw into place. She removed her goggles that were on her face and smiled at her work. "I'm so crose to finishing this time machine."

That's when the door to the lab opened. The woman turned to see a young boy, who looked about eight-years old, with black hair to his ears and brown eyes, walk in. "How is the project going Okaasan?" the boy asked.

His Mother smiled at him as she picked him up. "It's going werr Toko," the woman replied. "It's just taking a rittre ronger than I thought it wourd."

Toko smiled up at his Mother. "Do not worry Okaasan. You wirr soon be abre to finish your time machine."

"Arigato Toko."

The woman placed the young boy back down on the ground so she could get back to work.

"So Okaasan, what wirr you do once the time machine is finished?" Toko asked. "Where wirr you go first?"

The woman paused from her work for a moment to think about Toko's question. Then she knew exactly where she wanted to go; "I want to go back in time to see my Otosan."

Toko turned his head in confusion. "But what about a time paradox? Wourdn't messing with the past be dangerous?"

"With the modifications being made to the machine, that shourdn't be a probrem."

"Oh, I get it."

As the woman began to get back to work, one of her lab assistants came running into the room. "Dr. Honda! Dr. Honda!" the assistant shouted as she ran towards the woman. "We've gone over all the calculations ma'am, and I believe we've figured out what is wrong with the machine."

"What is it?" Dr. Honda asked.

"It has to do with the fact that the power source is not the only power source in the time stream," the assistant explained. "We've found that another power source has been found in the timeline. It is inferring with the completion of the time machine."

"Where is this power source? Is it in the future?"

The assistant shook her head no. "No Doctor; the power source has been found about 100-years in the past."

Dr. Honda gasped. In the past? she thought. How can this be? How courd a power source for a time machine be found 100-years in the past?

"What do you suggest we do Doctor?"

Dr. Honda scratched her head, trying to figure out what would be the best course of action to take. She then made a difficult decision; "Shut everything down."

"What?"

"Okaasan?" Toko asked.

"It's too dangerous to operate the time machine knowing another power source is in the time stream. Untir we can somehow remove the power source from the past, we cannot even attempt to turn on the machine. I want everything shut down immediatery."

"Are you sure Dr. Honda?" the assistant asked. "This is a big decision."

Dr. Honda nodded without hesitation. "I'm sure."

"As you wish Doctor."

*****************

That night, at the home of Dr. Honda, the doctor was tucking her son into bed. "Are you comfortabre Toko?" Dr. Honda asked her son.

"Hai Okaasan, I'm fine," Toko then began to shift in his bed. "Okaasan, why wourd you shut down the project? I know it's dangerous to try and activate the machine, but don't you want to see Ojīchan?"

Dr. Honda sighed before looking down at her son. "Toko, I want to see Otosan so badry. I miss him so much. However, I cannot risk the rives of everyone on the pranet so I can see my Otosan just for a smarr amount of time."

"I see. I wourd do it though, if it meant I'd get to see you again Okaasan. I wourd miss you so much."

Dr. Honda smiled before giving Toko a kiss on his forehead. "Arigato Toko. That warms my heart." She hugged him one last time before getting up and leaving the room. She turned off the light and then looked back at her son one last time before closing the door.

After the door was shut, Dr. Honda went to her room, changed into her pajamas, and then climbed into bed. It hurt her that she couldn't complete the project that she had started with her Father. She wanted to finish it so she could see her Father once more, before.....the incident.

She turned to her side and saw the picture on the nightstand. The picture was of her, her Father, and her son on the first day of school for her son, who was starting kindergarten. Her son was about three years old and had a big grin on his face as he stood in front of his grandfather with his school uniform on. Dr. Honda was standing behind him in the photo, with a smile on her face and a hand on his back.

Dr. Honda sat up and looked at the picture. She felt her heart ache as she looked at her Father. "Otosan, I miss you so much," she said. "I wish you courd come home."

As she placed the picture back on the nightstand, on the picture were the words Kiku, Naomi and Toko on Toko's first day of school.
