Chapter Thirty-Two 

you're out of your fucking mind

3rd person pov 

the group of them walked into the house and they looked around. Canyon heard the sound of footsteps and she lifted her head to be met with chandler leading them into wes's office and they all followed after the man. Canyon held popes hand as they walked in and looked at the man

"i apologize for dragging you all out here, but i... i don't think i could speak about this in public. i know i mentioned blackbeard, but i assure you all, my interest is not the treasure, my ancestor, francis genrette was the british officer who caught and killed the notorius pirate. after he beheaded blackbeard, he killed the pirates wife elizabeth and since then for 300 years, generations of genrettes have been haunted by elizabeths ghost and have died violent deaths including my daughter, larissa. chandlers wife, my daughter saw elizabeth a week before she died, now... ive had a visitation so i know i don't have much time" he told them

"right, so we're really sorry that that happened to you, but what do you want from us?" he asked and lia nodded her head

"i agree, im just a little confused on what you want us to do about this?" lia spoke up, as always the voice of reason.

"of course, you're right. lets get down to business, chandler. we believe that we've found a way to break on this family right before she was murdered, elizabeth begged francis to retrieve from her husbands ship a keepsake that he'd given her. Her most prized possession. An amulet.He denied the request and then murdered her. But if we find that amulet, fulfilling Elizabeth's last request,I believe it will break the curse that has haunted my family for over 300 years" he explained

"okay. im sorry. where did you say that the necklace thingy is?" kiara asked

"Blackbeard's last ship, the Adventure" he said

"According to all records, the amulet was still on it when it was scuttled right off Goat Island" he said

"Right, yeah, but the Coast Guard excavated that site years ago" pope spoke up

"The excavation team didn't know what we know. They didn't have this. There's a secret lockbox hidden behind the headboard in the captain's chamber. Do you dive?" he asked

"we dive. all of us do. its just we only do it if the price is right" jj said and canyon tilted her head at her brother 

"excellent. we are prepared to offer you a premium for your services. fifty thousand plus expenses. five thousand up front and we would very much like your immediate answer" he said and they all walked out of the room to talk to it. canyon closed the door and they all sat down as john b spoke up

"This is weird. We could just slip out through the back" kiara said and they all looked at each other 

"Are we really going to listen to the guy who should be in a white padded room? Visitations? Curses? He's a madman" john b exclaimed

"Obviously, he's batshit, but he's in there crying about his daughter. Like, he needs help" sarah said

"He needs therapy, not a necklace thing. We don't even know if anything he's saying is true. We cannot ignore the fact that there is a ghost and a curse. Y'all aren't getting a weird-ass vibe?" kiara said

"im getting a weird ass vibe" canyon spoke up and they all turned to her. usually she wanted to help people but not in this instance, something was weird. 

"Okay. Guys. Let's just say we take this job. Is it even possible?" cleo asked 

"Yes" jj said quickly and canyon snapped her head to the boy and shook her head as she sighed 

"look i just don't know if this is the best idea, we do this, what happens? look at our track record, every time we get involved, we lose, we fail, someone dies and somehow we always manage to lose what we have. do we really want to do this?" canyon spoke up 

" guys, in our time of need, are we really gonna turn down free money? no thats not like us, so the worse that can happen is we walk out of here with five gs in our pocket. end of discussion" jj said and he turned to walk out of the room but canyon grabbed his arm 

"we agreed to think before we just decide to do things without talking to each other first jj, you're out of your fucking mind right now and im not gonna listen to you. we all have a voice and we all make the decision so anyone else?" canyon asked and they all spoke up coming to the agreement that they would do it but they needed to be ready for it to go to shit and when they saw smoke? they backed out of it as fast as possible. 

soon enough, they all walked out of the room and told the men that they would do it. They handed canyon the money and canyon gave it to pope for safe keeping. They left the mansion and went back home, coming up with a plan. While they did that, canyon went to work at the shop, she talked to customers and she interacted with people. When the others told her about their little adventure, she agreed to stay at the shop and hold down the fort until they got back. She watched them leave on their boat and she waved them off as she walked into the shop and she laid on the counter. She played her songs and she cleaned up as she read her books and she did the work that she needed to do. 

"canyon, you here?" she heard someone call and she sat up as she turned and met the man from the auction and she froze before she shook her head and smiled. 

"hi, how can i help you?" she asked him and he smiled at her. she kept her ground and she stared at him as he handed her a paper and she nodded her head in thanks. 

"just wanted to give you this and warn you, i could take this place off of you and your friends hands if needed" he told her and she scoffed and shook her head with a laugh and a sigh. 

"so heres the thing. we bought this place for ourselves, this is our home, and i will not offer this place to you. thanks for the warning, i appreciate it but don't ever try that shit with me. You can leave now" she told him and he nodded as he walked off. she laid back on the counter, she twisted her body and she sighed. 

for the next few hours, all she did was work with the customers and read. That was until the others showed up and they were practically carrying jj and kiara. Canyon jumped up from her spot and she ran over to them as she shifted some of jjs weight off of pope and onto her 

"what the hell happened to them?" she asked and they got to the twinkie as they put jj and kie in the back and the others climbed in. Canyon got in the drivers seat and she put it in drive as she launched off with them and headed to the hospital 

"they have the bends" pope told her and she nodded before jj spoke up and pulled something out of his pocket 

"is that the amulet?" canyon asked and jj nodded as they drove.  she pulled into the parking lot of the hospital and brought the two of them inside. The doctors grabbed them and they watched as they got put into a hyperbolic chamber, they were told that the two of them had twelve hours in the tank. They all walked out to the twinkie and they sat down as john b walked out and told them that they would be okay. Pope stated that they deserved alot more than 50 k and they all agreed with him. They got back to poguelandia, they got on the boat and they headed to the genrettes. They got there and the cops were there. 

shoupe asked them about wes and told them about his death and they all stared at him but they knew one thing. 

they didn't do it, but who the hell did?
