Will POV
We were in big trouble.
I stitched Matt's wound but I would have to regularly clean it or else it will get infected - which means we're going to run out of alcohol wipes. We couldn't move Matt because the stitches might open, and even if they didn't, there will be too many Cannibals outside tomorrow to make a safe get-away.
Our supplies were in the basement and the bottom floor was crawling with Cannibals, as if that wasn't bad enough, my weapon was down there with them.
Mellissa would have to stay awake tonight, not that I was going to be able to sleep in any case.
Matt's scream will haunt me, and I could feel it battling to be heard - despite how hard I'm trying to suppress it. My heart was going erratic, and I couldn't get my muscles to relax. I was worn out by what just happened and our current situation wasn't helping. Lastly, I stitched a stab wound closed in poor lighting.
We would have to wait for the day to come before we could do anything about this mess.
Not knowing what time it is can really intensify a stressful situation. Mellissa was starting to doze off, I shook her, "You can't fall asleep, we're in a house filled with Cannibals and if you sleep, we'll all die. No offense."
She nodded meekly and stared at the tiled wall.
Mellissa and I were exhausted, Matt was badly injured and we needed to get out of here. Our odds were looking slim.
When day came, the Cannibals would sprint outside. That would allow us to grab our weapons and supplies from the basement. Once we have that, I would be able to survey the damage to Matt's leg properly. After that, I would need to draw the Cannibals away from the house somehow, while not getting trapped or bitten.
I grimaced, this is going to be very difficult.
Mellissa and I whispered to each other in hopes of staying awake and entertaining ourselves. Matt had long since fallen asleep.
We heard shuffling outside the door and Mellissa and I went dead still. I looked around the room and my eyes landed on the forgotten knife that used to be in Matt's leg. It wasn't long, but it would have to do. I put the used pair of disposable gloves back on - so that I don't make contact with the Cannibal's skin - and silently stood up. I planned to stab the Cannibal in the temple.
There was a loud crash downstairs and the Cannibal shuffled away.
I sighed and pressed my hand against my forehead. I was strung out. I sat back down and tried to get my hands to stop shaking. I didn't know when I started sweating, but it was making me shiver.
I was angry at myself. I forgot to tell the others about seeing Roderick at the hobby shop. If I had told them, maybe none of this would've happened. Matt and Mellissa got hurt because I was careless. My hands started shaking again, I felt weighted down. It felt like a demon was sitting on my chest, whispering in my ear, "It's your fault, it's your fault."
Matt's scream echoed in my ears, the pain behind it reverberated through my bones. My heart picked up speed and my breathing became shallow pants, "It's your fault, it's your fault", the demon whispered.
A shudder went through me, a shudder of disgust. I covered my hand with my mouth, how could I let this happen?
My mouth went dry and I was struggling to swallow, I closed my eyes and pinched my brow. Behind my eyelids, the image of Matt with a knife lodged in his leg played on repeat.
How could he ever forgive me?
The light started creeping into the room and instead of it being relieving, it was daunting. I need to make this right...
No matter what the cost.
I waited a while longer until I heard glass shatter downstairs. The Cannibals must've sprinted outside.
I took a few deep breaths - which did nothing - and turned to Mellissa, "Stay here with Matt, I'm going to go get the supplies."
She nodded lazily. I crept downstairs, and the first thing I picked up was my bat. There was a pool of blood on the floor that made a bubble of satisfaction grow in my stomach. He's lost too much blood to still be alive.
I snuck into the basement and got our bags of food and water, then slung them over my back. I picked up Mellissa's sword and Matt's crossbow.
'Please don't ask me to go away... because I won't be able to', his words sounded so loud in my mind. I should've said that to him.
I made my way back up to the bathroom. Matt was awake now and Mellissa was barely able to keep her eyes open.
"We need to get out of here", I told them.
They looked at me in fear, my eyebrows furrowed in confusion, "What?"
"Will, you need to calm down. You're looking psycho", Mellissa tried to sound careful but she was too tired.
I giggled, then frowned. Something isn't right. What's going on?
I looked at Mellissa and she had her brows raised -fully awake now- and Matt had his arms in the air, " Will...put the crossbow down", Mellissa said tentatively.
"What are you talking about", I asked in utter confusion. I looked down at my hands and saw the crossbow was aimed at Matt. I blinked my eyes, when had I done that? I lowered the crossbow.
My eyes darted back and forth, looking for answers. We need to get out of here, I'm losing my mind.
I shook my head, "Mellissa, do you think you can help Matt get to the car?"
Mellissa eyed me cautiously, "Why don't you help Matt get to the car and I distract the freaks outside?"
I shook my head, "No, you're too tired and you're injured. I'll do it, just get ready to move quickly when you hear a car horn".
I was about to turn around when Matt said, "Will, I think you should sit this one out. Mellissa can do it. Or take her with, I can get myself to the car."
I looked at him, "I did a poor job on your stitches last night, if you make one wrong move you'll reopen them and no one will be there to help you. So Mellissa is going to go with you to make sure you don't get yourself killed."
I tried to sound calm, but I must've failed miserably when I saw him wince.
I tugged at my hair, "Look, I'm just trying to make sure everyone leaves here in one piece. Get to the car and I'll meet you at my office, I have a proper first-aid kit and it's the safest place I can think of right now."
I walked out of the room feeling annoyed. They're treating me like I'm crazy. I don't know why I pointed the crossbow at Matt, I don't even remember doing it. I closed my eyes and focused. I need to get to the car that Roderick drove here in, but I first need to see how many Cannibals were outside.
I opened the door slightly and peeked outside.
I lost count at around thirty, the higher the number became, the more discouraged I got. I bit the inside of my cheek, I tried to focus, I really did, but the way the others looked at me was bothering me. That, and why I pointed the crossbow at Matt. I couldn't figure out why I had done it. I shook my head, too hard, and started feeling dizzy and nauseous. I clenched my jaw and gripped the door frame.
I looked around the room and my eyes landed on some knock-off vase. I grabbed it and went back to the door, the hinges better not choose now to creak. I opened it silently and threw the vase over the sea of Cannibals. When it landed, it shattered and the sound had all the Cannibals jolting toward it.
I took my opportunity and started sprinting to the gate of the estate. I almost reached it when I looked back and saw the group of Cannibals dashing toward me.
I was afraid, there were more than thirty cannibalistic people running toward me and I started feeling faint. Adrenaline was all that was keeping me awake, I bolted to the first car I found and almost passed out when I found the door was locked, I moved on to the next car in a panicked haze. I could hear the crowd of footsteps quickly coming up behind me. The next car I found was also locked, I cursed violently. I ran to the following car and fumbled with the handle, my hands were shaking with an enormous tremor.
This was it, this was how I died.
[WARNING - GRAPHIC VIOLENCE]
I pulled on the handle and the car door popped open, I swiftly made it inside. But not before a Cannibal reached out to grab me and its hand got stuck in the car door. I pulled as hard as I could and it only made a crunching sound. The hand didn't fall off as it did in movies, it was still there and so was the Cannibal thrashing against the door. I needed to get out of here, I rapidly checked my surroundings and there were no keys in sight but there was some sort of silver object. I bit my lip so hard that it started bleeding, I needed to focus. I saw Matt hotwire our previous car, I just needed to recall what he did. He used both hands, and currently, both of mine were holding the door closed. The hand wouldn't get chopped off by the door, despite how tight I was holding the said door. I noticed that the hand was turning a slight shade of blue - which meant its circulation was being cut off.
I reached for the silver object and was relieved to discover it was a pocket knife. I felt the blade and it was still sharp, it was also serrated, which would come in handy for what I'm about to do...
I positioned myself on the seat so I was as far away from the hand as possible and pressed the knife against it. I started cutting it at an awkward angle and dark blood started pouring out of the cut, dropping down onto the seat. I continued my sawing motion, which caused an unsettling squish sound until I reached the bone.
I picked up my speed and started cutting through the bone. I grimaced at the scraping sound it emitted. If I closed my eyes, I would've sworn that I was sawing through wood. Eventually, I cut through an artery and it was pure luck that the blood sprayed in the opposite direction of where I was.
The blood flow started slowing down and to my surprise, the Cannibal fell to its knees. The entire time I was cutting off his hand, the other Cannibals were slamming against the car. My brows furrowed in confusion, so blood loss also killed them.
The hand was hanging off a piece of slimy skin and I couldn't cut it off. It was wet with blood and so it stuck to the car window. I could, however, close the door on it. And I did.
[END OF GRAPHIC VIOLENCE]
Once the car door was locked, I felt a bit safer. I used the tip of the knife to loosen the screws on the plastic cover of the steering column. I felt stupid when I saw all the wires of different colors, but I chose the bundle that leads to the steering column. I remember Matt picking out the red wires and twisting the ends together, so I did just that. I wasn't naive, I knew that there was a strong possibility that I could electrocute myself. Matt then took the brown and yellow wires and sparked them against each other. I felt giddy as I did that. The engine sprang to life and I revved it a few times so that it wouldn't stall.
Now all I needed to do was distract these Cannibals so Mellissa could get Matt to my office.
