Biting knuckles
Will POV
I made a lethal mistake.
The sun was setting and I was watching the Cannibals down on the street. The darker it got, the more obvious the lights from the surrounding buildings became. As the day passed by, more and more Cannibals filled the street. My guess is that the club had all its lights off so the sunlight seemed brighter by comparison. The other buildings must've had lights on that matched the early rays of the sun in intensity.
There was a steady number of sixty-three Cannibals on this one street alone. I counted them and double checked. Add these numbers to the fact that they could run in the day and you have a certain means of dying. It goes without saying that that fact discouraged me. I was too focused on watching them remember to turn the lights of the office building off. I only broke out of my reverie when a whole bunch of Cannibals sprinted into the building. I jolted to my feet and rushed over to the light switch for the CEO's office. In my haste, I knocked into the side of the desk and the picture of Tammy and her family fell to the floor, the glass frame shattered to pieces. Normally it wouldn't be so loud, but in an abandoned building, every sound is magnified.
My heart rate increased dramatically and I rushed over, switched off the light and closed the door as silently as possible. I was going to close the blinds of the glass wall overlooking the cubicles but that option was ripped from my grasp when a group of Cannibals sprinted onto the floor I was on. I looked through the obnoxious glass wall and froze in fear. Just outside the glass wall was a Cannibal seemingly staring into the room. She had the same fogged eyes but the skin that was showing - her hands and face - was covered in a rash. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Maybe she had some kind of infection when she was bitten.
Of course, I knew that they couldn't see. Not with the way their eyes were fogged up, it looked similar to severe cataracts. As far as I could tell, they could see bright lights but that was about it.
That fact alone didn't help the fear clinging to my back.
I didn't have much of a choice, when morning came they would break through this door and the thin glass wall to reach the sunlight.
I looked around the room and my eyes found Tammy's desk. It was an old fashioned desk that had a board that would hide your legs from sight. I could hide under the sturdy looking desk.
But I would have to get there first.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and took a few deep breaths. It was either move and possibly die or stay where I am and definitely die. Suffice to say, I did not like these options.
Just like everything else lately, I didn't have another choice.
I inched away from the door, locking the Cannibal in my sight. If I'm going to die, I want a good look at the person who's going to kill me. She stood like a statue. If someone were to look at her, they would probably think she's some sort detailed mannequin. Only, mannequins don't breathe.
I inched into her field of vision and froze. There were no tell-tale signs that she noticed me but that didn't help relax my tense muscles, nor did it unlock my jaw.
I inched further back. She stayed just as still as she was when she got here. I slowly checked behind me. The desk was at least six feet away from me. I almost looked forward when I remembered the shattered glass on the floor. I couldn't afford to make a single noise if I hoped to get out of this alive. I looked around when I located the shattered glass on the floor. It was on the left-hand corner of the desk and I was moving toward the right of the desk.
Slowly I looked forward again. She was still standing there. Staring at nothing. I began to think that the Cannibal's eyes were open as a tactic to scare their prey. A scared person without this knowledge would make a run for it when the Cannibal's eyes appeared to lock onto their position.
It's actually an ingenious trait.
I inched further back, my hand reaching out behind me to feel for the desk. When my hand came in contact with the solid wood I felt a spark of relief. I inched around the desk, my eyes still locked onto the woman standing on the other side of the glass wall until I ducked under the desk. I quietly dragged my backpack over to me and stared at the surrounding buildings in terrifying splendor. There was no doubt in my mind that I would not get any sleep again tonight. There's something terribly unsettling about knowing there are people with you in an abandoned building, but you aren't able to hear them. They made no sound.
Of course, the Cannibals on the ground floor chose the streetlights over the lights - in the various buildings - because they were brighter.
I started wracking my brain to think of a way to find Matt and Mellissa. Where would they go? More specifically, where would Mellissa's obnoxious arrogance lead them too.
Knowing her, she would either pick my house or the roof of the apartment complex, in hopes of finding me.
I could kill Matt for shouting. What did he expect? Did he expect me to yell, "YES HONEY, IM OVER HERE! I'LL BE BACK IN A FEW!"
Plus, where the hell did he think I went?! Why would I run away and leave the supplies and Mellissa with him? Okay, maybe I would leave Mellissa with him for a few days, because, frankly, I don't think I would be able to tolerate her snoring every night, especially when she sounds like a vacuum cleaner on full power.
I wasn't sure the apartment complex was safe anymore. I'm sure the Cannibals would've slammed the steel door, leading to the roof, open. That would mean Matt and Mellissa would head to my house. It wasn't safe either but I had to take into account we would need a place to sleep where the Cannibals couldn't reach at all - because of Mellissa and her beastly howls.
The only real danger was that I would have to travel on the streets, and it's not like I had an easy road ahead - assuming I lived through this - because I would have to travel on foot to reach my house and the Cannibals swarmed the streets, both night and day.
Yet again, I had no other option. But I would like to travel at night considering the Cannibals couldn't run then. It gave me better odds, even if my visibility was impaired.
Staying still in a cramped space for several hours hurt. My joints started burning after some time and my back was killing me - thankfully, in the figurative sense.
It got lighter, which told me the sun was rising. It would take a while for the sunlight to shine brighter than the sharp, white, office lights.
I braced myself for the flurry of Cannibals that would rush through. I didn't know when they would come and I became weary. Worrying that they might not budge.
It happened so quickly that I had to bite my knuckles to prevent myself from screaming. The glass wall behind me shattered with such force I thought a boulder had been thrown through it. A series of Cannibals sprinted to the glass wall I was facing and hit it with such intensity that it shattered and they fell to their deaths.
But something went wrong. I hadn't taken into account that a Cannibal would fall over the desk I was currently hiding under. He landed on his back, with his head a few steps from my feet. His face was covered in a nasty rash. My lungs burnt from the need of oxygen and my vision started developing dark spots.
But the Cannibal just lied there, breathing.
I had to act quickly or I would lose consciousness. I braced my back against the desk and retracted my feet, then pushed them against the Cannibal's shoulder. His body went rigid, as he acknowledged my presence, but he didn't stop himself from sliding across the floor and dropping to his death. I gasped in a breath and immediately felt faint. Exhaustion and lack of oxygen didn't mix well. After I got my breathing under control, I stretched and groaned in pleasure. Whoever polished this floor just saved my life.
I slung my backpack over my shoulder, picked up my aluminum bat and sprinted to the roof, I wanted to get as far away from this building as possible.
I headed in the direction of my house, hopping from rooftop to rooftop. I just hoped that those two would be smart enough to head there.
