Prologue

Paradise: an ideal or idyllic place or state.

If paradise could be a place at this very moment, it's where Jamie and Wolf have been living for the past eight weeks. Within the space of barely five months, they've managed to go through so much together. The ability to grow an understanding for someone other than yourself is way better than Jamie would have ever thought but here she is now, dedicating her life to the man she hopes to see her future endgame with.

She's in love. Her. Somebody who never grew up with a romantic bone in her --no plans to settle down with any sort of partner-- is so in love that the decision of running away with the very thief who stole her heart somewhere in the European country of Malta didn't even cause her to stutter once before she agreed.

This man watched over her for most of her life and even once they had met, continued to the point of making her fall head over heels in love with him because of his selfless and caring heart.

Jamie Davenport strongly believes that she has finally found her other half. He's good to her. Good for her. Understands what she wants and needs unlike anybody ever has and she knows that if she can help it, they're going to last for the rest of their lives.

Her blonde, shoulder-length hair blows lightly in the breeze as she faces the horizon, the ocean water hugging her ankles in a soft embrace. Her dress is a white so stark it puts the heavens to shame and the ruffles on the sleeve are busy enough to balance out the backless, simpler structure of the dress. He watches her from his place on the warm sand as the carved-out muscles on her back, glow in the sun, accented by her tanned skin.

Jamie turns around to smile at Hitter's mask-less face, his stubbled jaw on display to her in the oh-so-familiar way she's grown used to loving and he simply watches her as she tucks her hair behind her ear.

She's so beautiful, he thinks. Watching as she turns back around to step into the water, daring for him to follow as she throws yet another glance over her shoulder at him. He must say that over the past couple of weeks, this side of her he's seen has been playful and relaxed but also very... alarming.

Wolf's not sure if it's in a good or bad way but one minute she's playful, alluring, tempting even and simply addicting but the next she's panicked and paranoid. It's not obvious, of course. Wolf has just grown too prone to reading the female and he's not even sure if she's aware of how much her moods are shifting.

Whether she's aware of it or not, he lets her be, always there to comfort her when she finally decides to tell him that she wants to go back to her family because life in a country so far from home is too hard for her to live in without all the people she loves surrounding her.

That may not be the problem but, what is he to assume? He never wanted her to come just in case of this very reason but she insisted that she'd be happier if she left with him - instead of him leaving her behind. When he called Gretchen, his Witness Protection officer and told her he felt unsafe at his current location for the first time in ten years, she immediately got to work with booting him to the next residence.

He's had to make a new identity for himself twice prior, what was a third time? But what had changed was that he had Jamie, the blonde who he had taken an oath to protect that very ten years ago when he met her mother, Yasmine Davenport. From that day onward, Wolf felt fulfilled with not only his location but his current situation... having something to do.

She was nothing like he could have ever anticipated and he was truly amazed. So now that she's experiencing this new change with him, he feels surprisingly at ease with having her here because they're in the comfort of each other's presence - but sometimes, he just can't help but wonder if she regrets her decision with the way she stares off so suddenly, as though a leaf having detached itself from a tree and is floating around aimlessly with no idea where to land.

Has the move from the middle of society given her the intention of feeling as though she has nowhere or nothing to do? He understands these feelings, no matter how accustomed to isolation you can get, some days aren't the best.

It's been about five weeks now, just over a month. If she's strained already will she give up and leave him? Perhaps his complicated past of neglectful parents is too hard for her to deal with and she's slowly changing her mind about her decision to be with him.

Whatever it is though, Wolf dismisses it all and stands as her hands move up to the sleeves of her dress and she drags them off her shoulders, stepping out of the clothing and throwing it on the sand before turning to reveal her white one-piece swimsuit, noodle strap and still backless.

No matter how many times he sees her slender body, his breath is still taken away at how beautiful she really is. He yanks his shirt off and walks forward as she walks backwards, smiling in that playful way she did when she was in a light mood.

"Come here." He calls and she shakes her head, curls bouncing on her shoulders as she bites her lip.

Her hair had also tightened into its natural form of curls, but she looks more lively this way so he loves it. "I'm gonna chase you, catch you and throw you in the sand." She throws her head back and laughs then squeals, alarming the families, couples with their dogs and teenage friend groups as he begins chasing her.

She laughs loudly as he runs after her, true to his words as they splash in the water like children.

His cap is pulled low over his eyes in replacement of his lack of a mask so when he catches her, he bends his head at an angle and places a wet kiss against the slope of her shoulder, making her knees go slightly weak.

"Dinner tonight? I'm taking you out." His husky voice is breathy against her ear and she nods silently as they walk back to the towels they have set up, fingers intertwining like a young couple infatuated with one another as Jamie tucks her hair behind her ear and grins widely.

He chuckles and shakes his head at her, bringing his hand up to kiss the back of hers and then they pack up their stuff and head to the car. Their car is a vintage white convertible and Wolf trades his cap for a mask as they climb in side by side and put all their things in the back.

"Let's go shower and change first." Jamie reaches over to place her hand on Wolf's leg then pushes sunglasses over her face once her seatbelt is fastened.

.....

Jamie walks out of the bedroom pulling her peachy pink mini dress and fluffing up her straightened hair while going to see if Wolf is done in his office.

"Babe?" Jamie calls, rounding the corner and entering the office to see her boyfriend adjusting the sleeves rolled to his elbows while staring at his laptop. He looks up and the white flowers embroidered onto her dress catch his eye, making Jamie look soft and fairy-like in his opinion.

She raises an eyebrow and takes in his own outfit, a black shirt and white calf-length trousers with a brown belt. "We ready to go?"

He nods, slams the laptop shut then walks around his desk and places his hands on her hips, pulling her closer and brushing his lips against her cheek.

"You look beautiful."

"Thank you." She smiles, takes his hand then they go out to the car, keeping the top down regardless of Jamie's note that her hair will be a mess by the time they get to their location.

Jamie and Wolf pass the complex they usually go to for weeknight dinners and she turns to him with a raised brow but he continues to face ahead.

"Where are we going?" She finally asks, retro-styled white-rimmed sunglasses covering her eyes against the harsh light of the setting sun.

"You'll see."

"You actually have something planned?" Her eyes widen.

"I do."

"Oh. Sweetie." Jamie gushes, definitely the one who has grown obsessed with pet names between the two.

Wolf's lips twitch and even behind the comfort of his mask, he doesn't allow himself to smile at the way she's smiling so wide. "Why didn't you say something sooner?"

"It would have defeated the purpose of a surprise." He states simply and she laughs then nods her head in agreement, sitting back and enjoying the ride while rubbing her hand up and down his thigh, making Wolf wonder if she's even noticed how often she did that lately.

.....

"It's a park," Jamie observes when she steps out of the car and takes Wolf's offered hand in her own, letting him lead her down a granite path. She keeps peeking sideways but his eyes never stray from the path ahead. Resting her chin on his shoulder, she doesn't even question anything as they walk through a row of hanging vines, gushing at the scenery of a pond on the other side visibly swimming on the other side and all she can do is take it all in.

When his hand drops to her lower back, he alerts her that she has yet to say anything, but she still eyes the picnic laid out for a full minute before turning abruptly to throwQ her arms around the back of his neck, hugging him tightly and catching him so off guard that he has to tighten his grip on her before returning the hold and lifting her up off her feet.

"Oh my dress!" She exclaims, moving to get down when he short outfit rides up but he just holds her into place. Jamie laughs and kisses him quickly. "Thank you for this."

"You're welcome." He murmurs and she smiles, then he pulls her down to the picnic, where mounds of blankets make up a cosy little spot where they sit with her between his legs. Strawberries, scones, cinnamon rolls, sandwiches, chocolate and nuts amongst many more things are in an array and Jamie turns her nose up at the nuts.

Seeing her face, he explains, "They're for me. You know I love them."

"Yeah...no." Jamie grabs a strawberry and finishes it in three bites before humming and reaching over for the bottle of sparkling rose that sits in an ice bucket. "My favourite." She mumbles around chewing, tracing the label daringly then smiling up at the love of her life with shining eyes.

"I know." Wolf chuckles and pulls his mask down, pecking her lips then taking the bottle from her and opening it for her. The next couple of hours are spent talking about nonsense, laughing about nothing, flirting and lots of kisses. Without the outdoors picnic, the couple spend a lot of their days like this, nothing able to burst the well deserved vacation.

Skinny dipping in the pond later on, Jamie wraps her arms around the back of Wolfs neck and kisses him short but sensually. "I love you." She says, sparks erupting in them both from the words and he kisses her again and squeezes her tighter.

"I love you more." He means the words more than she'll ever know and Wolf knows that that promise is forever.

There's nothing better than paradise, and right now that's in each other's arms. Swimming around with her, Jamie stares at that beautiful mask less face and can't help but smile even wider. Her cheeks definitely hurt but she's not stopping, she can never stop. As long as she's with her boyfriend, she can never stop being happy. He makes her happy.
