Chapter Twelve -Fake it 'Till You Make it-
A smile playing at Sans' non-existent lips just as it should be, no sadness despite the looming weight on his shoulders. Staying with friends and getting through work laughing and brightening people's days. Sans sighed quietly as he held a metal cup in his hand, the blender whipping at the contents inside the cup. A small smoothie for the nice gentlemen waiting for Sans to finish his order. The cafe is been booming since the spring break, everyone came over to either see Sans' coffee art, -which was nowhere near as good as Inks but he still appreciated it- talk and have fun or just some time to relax and enjoy the nice weather. Well, as nice as it could get, as of right now it was raining, a light sprinkle sure but the dull clouds and the light of cafe, gave a sense of warmth. It was cozy compared to the cold rain gently pattering down at the ground. The clouds flirting with the rays of the sun, a small clap of thunder enough to finally sink in the fact of the moody weather.
Sans slowly turned off the blender and pulled the metal cup away, the cool drink was an odd choice for a rainy day. But hey, sometimes all you want is a smoothie to get you through the day. Sans poured the icy treat into a cute little cup with the cafe's logo on it, writing a nice little message on the cup before spinning around.
"Your order sir!" Sans cheered gently handing the cup to the male standing quietly behind the counter. He seemed rather shy and never made eye contact longer than a few moments. His quite meek voice squeaked as he spoke, Sans' smile just widened.
"Th-thank you..." The man whispered and set his owed amount on the counter taking the cup and scuttling away to a booth in the corner. Sans chuckled softly as he turned to clean up his workstation waiting for another customer.
"Someone's in 'a good mood 'ta day." A deep voice called out behind Sans, prompting the smile on Sans' face to grow. Sans around and smirked playfully at his friend, "Is it illegal to smile?" Sans bristled jokingly he giggled at the deep, rippling laugh he received in response from his friend.
"No, I guess 'ya got me there." Feather chuckled and shook his head softly, a grin replacing his hearty smile. "How'z 'bout I buy 'ya a drink? We can sits down and talk 'a while." Feather hummed and leaned against the counter, "'s our break anyway." he pointed out tilting his head toward the clock mounted on the wall. Sans hummed for a moment and shrugged.
"Sure, why not, what do you want? I'll make it?" Sans commented softly looking at the array of ingredients laid out on the counter in small containers. Feather chuckled and sighed, "Not 'ere lass, somewhere else. Follow 'me." His strange ancient seemed to thicken for a moment before lessening. Feather stepped back and hung up his apron on the rack, he held his hand out. Sans sighed and undid his apron and handed it to Feather who smiled and hung it up as well.
"We only have half an hour, where do you plan on going?" Sans asked softly as he followed Feather out of the cafe.
"No, need 'ta worry 'ya lil head 'bout 'dat." Feather hummed and unfolded one of his wings. "Just f'alla me." He hummed and lifted his wing to sit right about Sans' head. He pulled up his hood and started to walk. Sans cocked his head in confusion but followed along anyway. He looked up in gently awe, the wing nicely shielding him from the rain pelting down. Sans hummed and looked at the beautiful black feathers that danced messily down the bone of the wing. A small smile graced Sans' face as he walked alongside Feather. A cold breeze past the two as they walked down the street, cars zooming past them, bring a cold gust of wind with them. Sans shivered a bit and tugged at his long-sleeved, thin sweater; little patterns etched into the fabric. His black pants brushed against his normal sneakers almost tickling his ankles.
Sans blinked in confusion as the large wing hovered closer to him, still blocking out the rain, but it wasn't as cold anymore. Sans snorted and looked up at Feather who huffed and looked away, a barely noticeable blush on his face. All too suddenly Feather stopped and looked up at a gently glowing shop. A small sandwich shop, little dancing food playing in the neon lights that decorated the shop windows.
"Mindy's Sandwiches? Really?" Sans teased and Feather rolled his eyes, his feathers bristling. "I saw 'yar friend brin' them 'ta 'ya 'dis week. So, I thought brin' 'ya 'ere 'fer lunch would be nice." Feather muttered and stepped under the overhanging roof of the shop. He shook out his feathered wing and folded them neatly behind his back again. Sans smiled softly and followed Feather into the shop.
"Thanks."
----
Feather chuckled holding a sandwich in his hand, crumbs decorating his face. "Yar really somethin' lass." Feather joked just as Sans finished up his story.
"Pfftt, you think so?" Sans hummed and set down his half-eaten sandwich, he grabbed a napkin and held it up to Feather who gladly took it and cleaned his face.
"Sure do! Glad I snagged 'ya up, just as 'da break started!" Feather stated proudly a mouth full of food, Sans couldn't help but smile and shake his head.
"Well, thanks for inviting me." Sans hummed and leaned back into the booth looking out the window. The rain gently hit the window, it really started to pour after a few minutes of getting the shop. Sans closed his eyes listening to the music of the world, the rain the steady beat, the lyrics the chatter or passing conversations.
Feather watched with a small smile on his face the atmosphere was so peaceful. He finished his sandwich and sighed softly. "Ya gonna finish 'yar sandwich lass?" Feather asked softly, Sans slowly opened his eyes and looked at his plate.
"Uhm, do you want it?" He asked shyly seeming rather disinterested in the food now. Feather shook his head,
"How'z 'bout I wrap it up fer 'ya?" Feather offered softly grabbing the half-eaten sandwich and wrapping it up in a small crumbled sandwich wrapper. "'Bout time we start headn' out 'ta." Feather spoke softly and stood up, Sans nodded and followed suit.
"Thanks for taking me out Feather." Sans hummed and smiled at him as they walked outside.
"'Course lass." Feather chuckled and raised his wing once more and pulled his hood up once again.
----
By the time Sans had gotten home, his body ached all over, his bones tense and in pain. Sans took a deep breath and sighed walking to the kitchen he grabbed a bottle left out on the counter. Oxycodone, just what he needed, he popped open the bottle and took two pills. He's trying to be careful; he doesn't want to get addicted to this stuff. Not that he knows of any monsters getting addicted to anything. He screwed the lid back on and set the bottle down. Sans turned to the fridge and opened the door; he grabbed a water bottle and washed the pills down with some water. He gently closed the fridge door and sighed. Spinning on his heel he headed to the couch, today was rough, sure he had fun with Feather, but his body still hurt. He wanted nothing more than to just fall asleep. He was so damn tired and faking not being in pain all day sure does take a lot out of you. He nuzzled into the side of the lumpy, green couch laying his head on the arm of it.
Papyrus was still at work, so he had the house all to himself. He sunk into the couch catching his breath for a moment. He rubbed his leg painfully, hoping the Oxycodone would kick in any moment. He knows it takes twenty to thirty minutes, but he's tired of hurting. He whined softly and rubbed his back as well, the twinging pain popping up all over his body now that he's relaxed. He shifted slightly and groaned in frustration.
"Can't I just be comfy!" He hissed softly and slowly stood up, maybe he just needs a bath. That should help, warm water to relax his bones and soothe him, that sounds wonderful. He hummed softly and slowly stood up, he huffed and placed a hand on his lower back. "I'm so old." He muttered and made his way up the stairs, each step hurting his leg more than the last. Finally, he made it to the top of the stairs he took a deep breath and sat down.
After a moment of rest and stood up again and wobbled down the hall to the bathroom. He grunted and opened the bathroom door flicking the light on. A small counter stood next to the door; a sink built into it. A large mirror mounted onto the wall. Two toothbrushes as it a small little cup next to the sink. A half-empty tube of toothpaste was curled up in the counter. A towel rack mounted to the wall across from the skin adorned a light brown towel. A toilet sat next to the counter just next to the bathtub that had a duck pattern shower curtain. The human helped design their bathroom, so he wasn't surprised by all childlike things in there. He sighed and shuffled to the tub closing the door behind him, he shucked off his clothes and tore open the shower curtain. He sat on the side of the tub and pushed the plug in. Trapping all the water that fell into the tub, he turned the faucet on, turning it to the right to get warm water. Just like Frisk showed him, he hummed softly as the warm water poured into the tub, he sighed and waited for the tub to fill. He leaned against the wall watching the water.
He grabbed his phone from his shorts pocket and set a timer for two hours, that should be enough to relax and then make dinner just before Paps gets home. He took a deep breath, steam filling the air. Just what he needed.
---
An hour passed and Sans was sunk into the warm water of the tub, his bones relaxing and finally unwinding. The Oxycodone finally kicking in as well, Sans jumped and his phone went off, playing a small ring tone as it buzzed on the floor.
Sans blinked and picked up his phone answering it. "Hello?" Sans muttered into the speaker of the phone.
"BROTHER! HELLO!" A loud voice yelled from the other side of the phone; Sans pulled the phone away from his ear. The peaceful atmosphere disturbed for just a moment,
"Hey bro, what's up?" Sans asked softly confused as to why Papyrus would call him just an hour before he gets off work and comes home.
"I THE GREAT PAPYRUS AND UNDYEN HAVE DECIDED TO HAVE A SLUMBER PARTY WITH THE HUMAN CHILD! I CALL TO INFORM YOU I WILL NOT BE HOME TONIGHT! IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG CALL ME RIGHT AWAY BROTHER!" Papyrus shouted worriedly, he seemed nervous about spending the night at Undyen's. Sans smiled softly and sighed.
"Don't worry about it Papy. Have fun and I'll call if anything happens.... promise." Sans hummed, making a promise was never easy and he didn't do it often, but he knew it would help Papyrus worry less if he did. He heard a gleeful laugh before his brother yelled goodbye to him and a careful warning and the phone call abruptly ended.
Sans set his phone back down and sunk into the water, he hummed softly sighing and taking back the peaceful moment. Just as Sans got to relax again, he received another phone call. "Oh, for the love of-" He picked up the phone and answered the call. "Hello?" Sans spoke with clear sass into the speaker of the phone.
"Woah 'dere lass, whats with 'da sass?" Feather spoke back in gentle surprise, Sans blinked in shock and sighed heavily.
"Sorry, sorry. What did you need Feather?" Sans hummed softly and closed his eyes to listen to Feather. Why did they have to give all his coworkers his phone number again? ... Oh yeah, company policy in case something was to go wrong.
"Well 'me and Cody were 'a talkin' and well, I figured I should'a invite 'ya to hang out? Cody says we could'a hang out at yar place. That way you aren't stress'n yourself none." Feather hummed softly, and Sans sighed, he rubbed his face out of slight frustration with his free hand.
"Sure, sounds good. When will you guys be here?" Sans asked softly glancing at the time on his phone. He put the phone back to his 'ear' just as Feather started to speak again.
"Few minutes." Feather responded with such confidence that Sans couldn't help but laugh a little. He sat up now draining the tub,
"Okay see you then." Sans hung up with a soft goodbye, he started to shower just as the tub drained. He slowly stood up letting the hot water run over his body for a moment, he could feel his bones slowly tensing up again, however, the hot water seemed to relax him all over again. He took a deep breath and reached for the body wash. He needed to get cleaned quickly before they came over.
----
A few minutes seemed to pass by way to fast as a loud knock on his front door startled Sans. He turned off his shower and stepped out and grabbed his towel. He stepped outside of the bathroom and paced a bit. Trying to figure out whether to make them wait in the cold or just answer the damn door. He huffed and threw open his bedroom door, grabbing a large shirt and throwing it on. He got to the stairs and took each step as fast as he could. He stopped at the front door and took a deep breath; he pulled the door open and instantly shivered as the cold air flooded through the door. The winter wind biting at his wet bones, he shook a bit as he looked at the people standing in his doorway.
"Hey, guys! Come in...? .... Where the heck is Cody? And Outer? What are you doing here?" Sans mumbled in deep confusion, looking at the two skeletons at his door, he sighed and shook his head. He was freezing he didn't want to stand here any longer than he had to. "Never mind, just come in, make yourself at home, I'll be right back." Sans hummed and stepped away from the door.
"Sure lass." Father chuckled and looked Sans up and down for a moment, taking note of the water on his bones. He stepped inside and Outer followed quietly, eyeing Feather. In confusion. "Thanks, Classic, sorry for showing up unannounced but you know how much I like surprises!" Outer chuckled and stepped into the house, sitting on the green couch just as Sans started up the stairs.
"It's fine," Sans called and disappeared upstairs, for the moment. Outer looked at Feather and huffed, he wanted to know how he knew Sans and if they were close. Did he still have a shot, or had he stolen Sans away?
"Who are you? A work friend?" Outer hummed feeling a tint of jealousy for something that's no longer his. Outer, however, did keep himself reserved he didn't want to explode on him. He didn't do anything, after all, Sans isn't his anymore he needs to keep his cool.
"Yup! 'Ya got 'me, I work with 'da lil lass." Feather hummed softly his accent thickening for a moment. He sat down on the opposite side of the couch with a lazy grin plastered to his face. "Are 'ya Outer? 'Da guy, that visits 'ta lass?" Feather questioned recalling the times he had seen Outer enter the cafe and talk to Sans for a while before leaving again.
"Yeah that's me, how do you know my name though? I've never talked to you before?" Outer muttered mostly to himself, did Sans talk about him at work? Did he say good things about him? He stuck himself in deep thought, just as Feather started to answer.
"The lass talks 'bout 'ya." Feather kept his answer short and simple, he leaned into the couch talking a deep breath. He looked at the stairs hearing soft footsteps padding down the stairs. Sans seemed to be taking down the stairs very slowly, gripping onto the guard rail tightly. When he reached the bottom of the stairs he sighed softly, he had on a large long-sleeved sweater with what looked like black sweatpants. The sleeves just covering his hand enough to only show off his fingertips. The sweatpants practically almost engulfing his small form just as much as the sweater had.
Feather started to chuckle softly as he looked Sans up and down, taking in his appearance. "If I didn't know 'any better I would say 'dere wasn't even 'a skeleton in 'dose clothes." Feather joked making Sans laugh a bit.
"Whatever it's comfy and I like it!" Sans huffed with a playful smile on his face, he shuffled towards the two on the couch and sat between them. "Okay, first things first, Outer what are you doing here?" Sans asked softly looking up at him in confusion. Outer broke himself away from thought and looked down at the smaller. He chuckled at the way the sweater seemed to swallow him covering even a little bit of his chin.
"Well, I was quite bored at home, Paps is out on business with the human and NASA. So, I figured I could visit my favorite skeleton. Ink was more than happy to pick me up, though he seemed to be setting up some portal highway thing. Probably tired of transporting people." Outer chuckled and sighed softly,
"I see, well that should be interesting." Sans laughed nervously almost just at the thought of everyone trying to figure out how to use the portal highway. He sighed softly and then looked up at Feather. "Now, where is Cody?" Sans asked softly tilting his head to the side.
"The lad got a call from his mom, 'ta get home quickly. Think his dog gave birth 'ta a litter of pups." Feather hummed a large smile on his face as Sans seemed to light up at the mention of puppies.
"Do you know if he'll be giving them away? Because I will gladly take one of his hands!" Sans spoke quickly not even thinking about how hard it might be to take care of a puppy.
"I'll let 'ya know when I find out lass." Feather chuckled a wide grin on his face, he looked up at Outer who seemed, very, upset in some way. It was hard to place. Feather gave him a confused look, worried he had done something wrong. He sighed, "So, Outer, tell 'me 'bout 'ya self. I see 'ya at the Cafe all 'da time." Outer perked up at this and looked at Outer confused.
"I... Uh well, I work for NASA in my AU, I stop by the cafe sometimes to visit Sans and talk to him for a while. We missed out on a year of each other's lives so there's quite a bit to catch up on." Outer hummed and looked at Sans who didn't seem to want to share their past relationship with Feather. Outer sighed and looked away and back at Feather, "What about you?" Outer changed the topic onto Feather rather quickly.
"Well, my fly'n help 'da humans, so I joined 'da air force for a while. I didn't do much 'sides scouting at night. My dark wings helped 'ta keep me hidden. But now I work at 'ta Cafe in UnderSwap. Some-'ting to keep 'da mind off war between 'da humans." Feather explained humming softly at old memories, Sans seemed quite interested in this. Who would've thought monsters adding humans in war?
"Interesting, you'll have to tell me more sometime!" Sans spoke with slight excitement wanting so badly to hear more of his adventures. Feather nodded softly with a small smile. Outer looked around the room, anything to get those two to split for a while.
"Hey Sans, do you still have your Wii hooked up to the TV?" Outer quickly pipped up drawing Sans' attention to him.
"Yeah, I do, why?" Sans asked softly confused by the sudden question, Outer looked at the Tv and then back at Sans.
"W-well I was thinking that maybe we could play some Wii games, I could beat you at Wii bowling again!" Outer grinned chuckling softly as Sans rolled his eyes at that statement. "Whatever, you don't beat me at Wii bowling all the time. Do you wanna play Feather?" Sans asked looking up at Feather.
"Why not." Feather shrugged and a lazy smile on his face as if he knows he can beat both at the game. Sans nodded and sighed getting up and switching the TV on and then the Wii. He kneeled and pulled out a bin of Wii stuff, he grabbed three remotes and handed one to Outer and one to Feather. Both thanking him and getting ready for the game. Sans already seemed bitter with the loss of a game he hasn't even played yet.
---
"Your cheating!" Sans whined looking up at Feather as he got another strike, Outer laughed and Feather snorted grinning at Sans.
"How 'da 'ya cheat at Wii bowling lass?" Feather questioned laughing as Sans huffed and crossed his arms pouting. "Don't be such 'a sore loser lass. I'll teach 'ya how to play properly next 'time." Feather hummed with a grin.
Outer shook his head softly and swung his Wii remote taking his turn, he fist-pumped just as he got a strike as well, him and Feather were neck and neck and Sans was losing terribly.
Sans almost turned into Papyrus for a moment as he stomped his boney foot into the carpeted floor. "Your both cheaters! How do you even get a strike in this game!? It's like it doesn't want me to win!" He huffed and made his bowl, the ball tumbling into the gutter, Sans took a deep frustrated breath. "I hate this game." He muttered,
Feather chuckled as well as Outer, "Alright lass, how's 'bout we take a break for now?" Feather asked softly patting Sans on the head, Sans slowly looked up at Feather and raised a brow.
"Fine, fine. But I'm gonna kick both your ass' in the next game, I swear it."
The three started to laugh softly at the sudden curse mixed with Sans' melting anger, the night continued like this, filled with snacks and games with one of them being a sore loser and laughing it off. Sans had almost forgotten about his stress in those hours, almost forgot about how his bones ached,
he almost forgot he was sick.
