Chapter Thirteen -Growing Pains-

A few days had passed since Feather and Outer came over; Feather seemed to be watching his step around Sans more when Outer was around. Sans couldn't understand why there seemed to be some unspoken tension between the two since they just met. But lately, he's needed to take more and more breaks. Sans has been trying not to pop pills just as fast as a toddler eats candy. But he can barely help it, his body just aches so badly he can't stand it. It getting to the point where he can't even fake it anymore.

Sans was laid on his bed he would say it was late, but he could see the sun just gently kissing the horizon. Rising from its slumber as the starry night sky faded away into the pinks, oranges and blue gradient sky. Sans had his arms tightly wrapped around himself, he hadn't slept all night. His eyes felt heavy but refused to droop his body wanted to sleep but his mind overpowered that idea and kept him awake. He stole a glance at the clock, large numbers flashed on the clock reading 5:30 am. Papyrus was definitely still asleep at this time so he couldn't count on his brother coming to save him. He sighed tiredly his body forced his eyes to close for a moment, but he didn't fall asleep like he hoped he would. But between his leg and back throbbing, the burning feeling throughout his body, and the tingling feeling in his limbs, he couldn't find it in himself to fall asleep. It was just becoming a growing list of problems he would have to deal with at some point before it became unbearable.

He sighed again and slowly pushed himself off his messy bed, whining softly at the pain that spiked throughout his body. He just wanted to sleep this off, all he has to do is get his medicine how hard can that be? Just hearing his breathing made him want to sleep, even more, the labored ragged breaths came out in short bursts. All from just standing up, his soul raced pounding in his chest.

Fatigue was crushing his soul beckoning for him to lay down and at least take a nap of some kind. But the pain he could feel ripping at his bones just pushed him to stay awake, a cold sweat starting to bead at his skull. Sans stumbled across his messy room and pushed against his door. Slowly the door swung open and Sans came tumbling out of the room, his leg begged him to rest not even two steps in. He shook his head; he just needed his medicine and it would stop. He grabbed onto the guard rail of the overhang that acted more like a hall for their bedrooms than anything. Just one small trip to the kitchen and down the stairs, no big deal, he could do this. He's done it before what's stopping him now, besides being dizzy, his leg, and a lack of magic?

He nodded firmly he's already in the hall no use in going back and whining about it. He made his way over to the stairs still gripping onto the guard rail. He paled slightly just looking at how many steps he'd have to go down. He gulped down the building bile in his throat and closed his eyes, he could do this, he didn't need Papyrus' help. He took on a slow and shaky step down the first stair, gripping onto the railing for dear life. Slowly one step at a time, wobbling for a few moments here and there, he made it down the stairs.

He breathed out a sigh of relief when his feet touched the wood flooring. Shuffling through the living room Sans made it into the kitchen walking over to the cabinet that held his medicine. He looked up and sighed, why did he let his brother make the kitchen so big. He really should've factored his height into it instead of letting Papyrus make everything crazy tall. Sans wobbled over to a chair sitting at the kitchen table and scooted it over to the counter under the cabinets. He slowly pushed himself up onto the chair grunting, his labored breathing starting to make his chest hurt. He slowly stood up on the chair, the chair tipping dangerously whenever his weight even so much as shifted. This chair has always been very wobbly one of the holding pegs at the bottom was missing, so the chair was always shifting, almost like a rocking chair.

He grabbed at the cabinet and threw it open no longer caring if he was loud or not, he just wanted to sleep at this point. He grabbed the purple pill bottle sitting at the front of a medicine fill cabinet. His bones felt weighted as he pulled the pill bottle to his chest, his movements slowed, and he could feel himself becoming sluggish. His body was going to shut down and force him to sleep sooner or later. He just didn't want to wake up in the same amount of pain he was in now or worse. He closed his eyes for a moment unable to keep them open any longer, his body tilted to one side. His eyes shot open as the chair shifted beneath him dangerously the back of the chair tilting towards the ground. In his quick panicked thinking, he tried to throw himself forward, over correcting and knocking himself off the chair, sending him and the chair crashing to the ground.

He gasped and inhaled sharply as his body slammed into the cold, unforgiving floor the chair crashing next to him and landing on his arm. The chair and his boney body making a loud almost deafening crash sound in his ears. He's positive that woke Papyrus up, heck it might've even woken up the neighbors. The loud footsteps coming from upstairs and in the living, room only confirmed his thoughts. His arm felt like it had snapped in half, throbbing painfully and whenever he moved it his shot waves of pain through his arm and up to his shoulder. It hurt more than his leg and back did at this point. He could feel small tears pricking at the corners of his eyes, the world around him felt so fuzzy and everything just hurt. It was too much he should've just stayed in bed at this point. He closed his eyes hoping, he would just fall asleep and the pain would just fade away.

"SANS?" He could hear his brother boom in worry his footsteps stopping suddenly as he walked into the kitchen. Even behind his closed eyes, he could tell the lights had been flicked on lighting up the once dark room. He mumbled a response to his brothers worried but it wasn't coherent enough to be made out by the taller skeleton.

He could hear Papyrus slowly walking over to him. "Oh, my Asgore Sans...! Why didn't you wake me up!?" Sans once again just mumbled something incoherent. His voice felt strained; his body was exhausted. He whimpered when Papyrus picked him up. "Your arm...oh Asgore your arm...what happened to your arm Sans...?" Sans could hear the panic in his brother's voice while he tried to piece things together and figure out what happened. Opening his eyes everything just seemed out of focus and blurry his mind couldn't seem to concentrate. He just felt tired now he leaned into his brother and shook his head no longer wanting to talk. His attention was completely divided on the pain in his arm and leg, he could feel tears rolling down his cheeks. He shook softly holding onto Papyrus for dear life, he just wanted the pain to stop so he could finally sleep.

Sans closed his eyes he could feel himself slowly going limp in his brother's arm, each bone feeling weighted, pushing him down. He took a deep breath, "Don't worry brother," Papyrus muttered to him, confused by his brother's state, all he can hope for is that Sans hadn't passed out. He looked around for a phone, an old rotary phone sat on the wall; he can vaguely remember Sans telling him Ink remade it so it would connect to another AU. Something about it being used only in a case of emergencies. Papyrus shifted Sans in his arms, he flinched when he heard Sans take in a sharp breath and a small whimper sounding from him. He apologized quietly and pulled the phone down, dialing the number Sans had obviously written on the wall next to the phone. The phone rang three times before someone answered the phone on the other side.

"HeLlO?" Their voice sounded rough and scratchy like they had just been woken up. Seeing what time it was, they probably were.

"Ink? This is Pap- Orange!... Sans! - I found him in the kitchen a-and..." Papyrus trailed off trying to keep his cool, looking at his brother in this state made his soul ache. He didn't know what to do except cry or panic, but he couldn't do that right now, he had to be strong for them both. There was a long sigh on the other side of the phone before the rough voice responded again in its glitched voice.

"CaLM dOwN, We'LL bE rIgHT thErE." They mumbled into the phone tiredly, they seemed to be talking to someone in the background before hanging up. Suddenly a glitched portal opened in the living room not too long after Papyrus had put the phone back. Then a small skeleton bolted out of the portal, a worried look etched into his skull as he looked around frantically. A tall, dark skeleton followed him out of the portal calmer than the other. Papyrus could only watch as Ink ran into the kitchen and started checking Sans over.

"What happened!?" Ink blurted out in a panicked tone; Papyrus just stumbled over his words trying to explain. The taller skeleton walked into the room, calm as ever and sighed.

"CaLm dOWn InKY, LeT'S juSt GEt HiM to ThE hoSpItAl." Ink looked at him and nodded firmly, he gently guided Papyrus to the living room. Trying to comfort the taller skeleton who didn't even notice the tears rolling down his face. How did it get this bad? Just yesterday he was fine and having fun at his new job! Everything was fine so why did it get worse, why wasn't the medicine helping? Papyrus was shaken out his thoughts by Ink's voice.

"Error, I don't have broomie, can you open another portal." Ink mumbled and gestured to the ground next to him. He seemed rather quiet for how normally energetic he is, Papyrus just watched Ink and Error talk. Error nodded and closed the original portal he made and opened a new one leading to Ink's requested AU. Ink waved Papyrus over and lead him through the portal Error following behind.

---

A slight jolt and a whimper from Sans and they were in the hospital, Ink was already at the front desk. Error closed the portal behind him and was standing next to Papyrus waiting for Ink to come back. Ink was trying his best to stay calm and explain what he knew to the kind nurse at the desk. Papyrus straightened as the rabbit monster approached him slowly, she checked Sans over and called the other nurses at the desk over. One rushed away after some talking Papyrus didn't seem to process, the brought out a small stretcher. Papyrus was jostled out of his thoughts as Error slowly took Sans from him. Papyrus gave Error a look of alarm, Error just hushed him quietly and set Sans on the stretcher.

The nurses waited for a moment and Medic came rushing down the hall as he followed the nurses down the hall. Papyrus just stood there trying to take everything in and understand what had just happened.

"Orange?" Ink whispered softly placing a hand on Papyrus' arm, Ink gave Papyrus a soft smile when he looked down at him. "Let's go to the waiting room, Error is going to go back and get PJ, but I'll stay with you okay?" Ink hummed, Papyrus just nodded and followed Ink to a small roomed lined with chairs and a few tables with magazines on them.

This was going to be a long night, Papyrus shook his head and sat down next to Ink waiting for Medic to come get him.

---

Sans mumbled softly to himself and shifted, the covers wrapped around him made it slightly harder to move. He slowly opened his eyes a bright hospital light shining him in the eyes, he groaned and closed his eyes again. His hand twitched as he brought up to his face and rubbed his eyes. He heard shuffling next to him and then someone starts to speak.

"Hey, welcome back." A soft voice whispered, Sans, opened his eyes and looked to his left, Medic was standing over his bed with a penlight reading over his clipboard. That's when it hit him, he was back in the hospital. He groaned and pushed himself into the back of his bed and closed his eyes again. "I know, I'm sorry Classic. I was hoping to keep you home. But it looks like the tumors have grown. From what he gathered it looks like the tumors have moved to different parts of your body. More tests and treatments will have to be done...meaning you'll be here for a while." Medic explained his face held nothing but sympathy for the skeleton in front of him. He sighed and turned the penlight off, a soft glow replacing the bright light. Sans opened his eyes and looked around, seeing a small medical lamp turned on in the corner. At least it wasn't so bright anymore.

As soon as Sans actually processed what Medic had said to him, he felt his soul drop, his vision became blurred with tears. He blinked away his tears and nodded slowly taking in a deep breath, "H-how long, do you think I'll be h-here?" Sans asked his voice felt scratchy and strained. His lip trembled as he held back a hurricane of emotions just waiting for the perfect moment to burst out.

"A while, it's hard to tell... I-I don't know how fast the treatment will work for you, so we'll have to keep you here until we start seeing some positive results." Medic spoke softly and rubbed Sans' should trying to soothe him.

"Oh..." Sans mumbled and looked at his feet, both covered in hospital blankets, the light shade of blue almost mimicked his feelings. He never thought he'd dread to hear Medic's voice again or see these hospital walls. He could feel the tears trying to burst out, what happened? Where did it go wrong? Medic didn't speak he knew anything coming from him would just make Sans sad in the long run. He knew Sans saw him as the barrier of bad news and more often than not he was. Medic sighed, he didn't have any words to truly comfort Sans, other than I'm sorries and crunched up words that wouldn't do much for the skeleton. He closed his eyes for a moment and pulled his hand away from Sans.

"I'm sorry Classic," Medic spoke in a soft whisper he might as well say what he can, he was sorry for Sans in a way. It hurt to see anyone going through this, let alone just slowly getting worse as time goes on. He backed away from Sans' bedside and walked over the room leaving Sans to his thoughts for now. He would let Sans take the time he needed to feel better or cry if he needed to. He knew just from the look on Sans' face that he was horribly upset and needed a moment alone.

Medic walked back to his office he just needs to focus on helping Sans get better, he shouldn't get to attached in cases worst comes to worst. He just needs to fix what he can.

---

Sans felt his body shakes as tears rolled down his cheeks like waterfalls dripping down onto the soft medical blanket. He gripped his shirt where his soul laid and leaned over crying quietly, when did it get worse? What signs had he ignored? He sniffled and looked up upon hearing someone enter the room. Papyrus stood at the door with a worried look on his face, his expression softens when he saw Sans.

"Sans? When did you wake up?" Papyrus asked softly trying to cheer his brother up, he slowly walked into the room. He held up a bag of food for Sans with the Grillby's logo printed onto it, he smiled softly at Sans and sat next to his bedside. "I got you some of your favorites, I even got extra ketchup for you." Papyrus laughed and set the bag on the bedside table.

Sans just looked at him and hiccupped, "Paps..." Sans muttered he didn't have the heart to tell him, but his brother needed to know. He jus-

"I know Sans...I know. Medic told me before you woke up, but it's okay, I'll help you get through this. Like always I'm here brother. Even if you need to go away, I'll wait for you." Papyrus mumbled and grabbed Sans' hand rubbing the back of his hand soothingly with his gloved thumb. Sans just slowly nodded, no longer wanting to speak as much as he cried and hiccupped.

Papyrus sat there and waited for Sans to calm down enough to speak again, he just kept the same soft smile for him.

---

After a few moments of sobbing Sans managed to calm himself, he pulled his hand away and looked at the bag of food. He didn't feel hungry, but he knew he was, and that Papyrus wasn't about to let this food go to waste. "Th-thanks bro," Sans mumbled out and slowly grabbed the bag, he looked inside and smile a bit. Papyrus really did get extra ketchup; the bag was almost filled with the stuff.

"Of course, brother, Ink and Error said they would visit soon to see how you were doing as well." Papyrus hummed and patted Sans' head gently smiling at him while Sans pulled some ketchup out of the bag.

"Okay, Paps," Sans muttered, he felt so bad that his friends had to bail him out of that, he should've been able to get his medicine, he went to lift his left arm but stopped. Something jerked at his neck he blinked and looked at his arm. Upon seeing a cast, he froze, it was a light blue with soft cloth poking slightly out of the top of the cast. A bright white sling was wrapped around his arm and neck holding his arm in place. He sighed heavily and let his arm settle back down next to his chest. Guess he knows why his arm hurt now, he mumbled to himself and grabbed a bottle of ketchup and started drinking.

This had to be one of the worst days ever, and he could already tell this was going to be a long month of bad days.
