Chapter Six -Home At Last-
Sans sat there in excited shock almost jumping out his hospital bed with just those few words. “Really!” he exclaimed hastily; it was nearly too good to be true! He could barely believe the words his brother just spoke. Papyrus’ smile only grew at his brother's reaction.
“Yes, you can go home today! Medic said you were all clear to go!” Papyrus stated proudly a hand placed on his chest as he posed heroically. Sans couldn’t help but chuckle at his brother's enthusiasm, he’s never felt this hopeful in his life, he’s almost scared to be this hopeful. Sans quickly shook those depressing thoughts out of his head, for now, he’s going home! He should focus on that and how happy he is to be discharged from the hospital! Oh, how he missed his bed and waking up to the smell of spaghetti, he missed his brother yelling at him to get up and get dressed for work. Sans’ smile grew as Papyrus stood up and started gathering things around the hospital room that belonged to them. Last night was amazing and now this! It couldn’t get any better! Sans laid back and looked at the roof of the hospital in pure happiness. His smile couldn’t get any bigger at this point, he took in a deep breath as if breathing in fresh air for the first time. A feeling of relief washed over him, he was going to be okay! Just as Papyrus said, he was going to make it! Everything was going to be alright, oh he can hardly believe it! It was like at that moment the pain of cancer had washed away. He couldn't feel the ache or stabbing pain in his joints anymore. It however only lasted for a moment.
---
The late afternoon came upon them faster than they thought it would, but before Sans knew it he was being discharged and sent home. Sans slowly walked out of the hospital his face brightened at the sight of the busy streets, and the slowly setting sun behind the tall buildings. Sans took in this breathtaking moment making the most of it, he would be lying if he said he wasn't going to miss this city, it was so beautiful. Papyrus stood behind him smiling down at his shorter brother, he couldn’t help but smile at how happy Sans was. Papyrus had never seen his brother this happy before, it warmed his soul to see Sans this excited. Sans looked at Papyrus with a smile that stretched across his skull. “Ready to go back home, bro?” Sans asked rather quickly almost bouncing on the balls of his feet. He could almost be mistaken for Blue if he kept this up. Papyrus bucked up quickly and pulled the bag he held farther up his shoulder.
“Yes, Brother! Let us get back home and get you fed! Dinner awaits us, dear brother!” Papyrus cheered still being quite for his brother just in case. Sans smiled he didn’t mind as much when Papyrus toned himself down for him, it was sweet for him to do that and it did help. Sans began walking down the street to his agreed meet up spot for him and Ink, interdimensional travel can be a bit of a headache at times. Trying to get around the humans or just avoid non main characters to minimize the confusion. Sans looked around the city streets, buildings towered over him, bright lights flashing around him as he walked. A few cars pass him by driving down the slightly busy road. It was noisy but yet at the same time it was calming, the streets were filled with humans and monsters alike. It was beautiful, the different colors of street decorations and traffic lights amazed him, and the sunset, oh the sunset was so beautiful. Beautiful oranges and pinks mixed flawlessly making the sunset that much more breathtaking. The sun's light gently caressed the tops of tall buildings casting long shadows over the city, the light of the sun just barely reaching Sans before it settled behind the towering buildings. Sans could just sit and stare for hours, he might just move to the city just for its beauty. Papyrus smiled and glanced at the city as well, taking notice to the coffee shop he often stopped by with Outer when they ran into each other. It was lit up with a soft glow, fairy lights hanging from the windows with the coffee shops logo posted on the windowpane. Tables sat neatly outside the umbrellas on the tables folded and put away. Soft chatter echoed from the coffee shop soon getting lost in the noise of the bustling city and streets. Papyrus smiled at the scent of coffee, and the noise that carried along with the beautiful rhythm of the city. It was amazing here if he didn't know any better, he probably would've stayed here. Papyrus hummed in a slight surprise when Sans suddenly stopped, the sound of Sans’ chuckle reached his ‘ears’ fully snapping him out of his trance.
“We’re here bro,” Sans spoke softly and looked at the alleyway, sure it looked sketchy but the bright colors of the graffiti only gave it character and a small light to it. Sans quickly walked into the alley followed by his Brother.
“Heya guys!” Ink’s voice called; the short artistic skeleton was posted on a wall a sketchbook in hand. The sketchbook held a beautiful drawing of the city outside the quiet alleyway. It must've taken them some time to get here if Ink drew all that. Papyrus waved happily greeting the paint covered skeleton.
“Hello Ink! We have arrived and are ready to travel home!” Papyrus stated proudly placing his hand on his brother's shoulder. Ink nodded happily and smiled at Sans. He closed his sketchbook and opened a small portal. He quickly shoved his sketchbook inside the portal and closed it.
“I’m glad to see you up and running around Classic. Congrats on getting better, we’re all happy to see you better.” Ink spoke in a soft and mother like tone, a soft smile graced Ink’s skull as he gave Sans a small side hug. “Now, let's get you guys home!” Ink spoke happily getting a nod of approval from the two brothers. A small rift in space was quickly opened thanks to Ink slashing his large paintbrush through the air. In other terms, it was more commonly referred to as a portal between AU's. Ink had only waved his paintbrush and there a portal opened ready for travel; it was quite fascinating but considerably complicated. Ink stepped aside and let the brothers enter the portal. The creative skeleton smiled he was happy to see the sickly skeleton back and well again, it was a refreshing sight to see a smile on skeletons face. Ink took a deep breath and quickly followed the brothers closing the portal behind him. This was a new chapter a turning page in the story, Ink can’t lie it excites him to see where this story is heading. The crunch of snow echoed in the small space, only two small snow figures sat in the small plain of snow. One was built up nice and tall a red scarf tied around the snow skeletons neck, and next to the proudly built snow skeleton was a large lump of snow with the words ‘Sans’ written on it in frozen ketchup. Sans couldn’t help but smile at this, it’s been so long since he’s been down here. Sans looked around the small snowy area, it was peaceful but a different type of peaceful they experienced in the city, it was cozier than it was there. Sans took a few steps forwards looking around at the tree littered underground, the snow crunching under his feet as he walked. Sans took a deep breath of the cold crisp air; it was nice to be home again. Papyrus smiled at his brother and looked behind him.
“Thank you Ink! We greatly appreciate your help! I shall make you a pie in thanks for your generosity!” Papyrus declared happily with a large smile.
Ink’s smile widens and he quickly shook his head, “No, but thank you Orange, save it for the party.” Ink whispered the last part ending his sentence with a small wink.
Papyrus let out a hearty laugh filled with his signature word ‘Nyeh heh heh’. “Of course, Ink!” Papyrus spoke happily, Sans looked back at the two in confusion, before Sans could question anything Ink quickly spoke up.
“I should get going! I have two big babies to take care of! See you guys later!” Ink giggled and quickly left through another opened portal via paintbrush. Sans blinked when Ink disappeared in a flash and gazed at his brother. Papyrus smiled at Sans and patted him on the head. Sans huffed when his silent question went unanswered.
“Let’s get you, home brother!” Papyrus smiled and began his walk home; Sans quickly followed his train of thought thrown off by the idea of pie and ketchup. Oh, how he missed his ketchup, Sans soon caught up with Papyrus as they walked down their normal path home. It hurt to walk this much and without his morphine drip, he felt all of it. He didn't complain though, he just kept walking even if it hurt to do so. It didn’t take them long to reach their hometown, the brightly decorated sign welcoming them back into the bright, warm, and cozy town of Snowdin. Sans hummed to himself softly as he looked around, different types of monsters out for their daily walk or out to get dinner wandered around. Soft chatter filled the quiet town, the warm colors and lights occupied Sans’ senses, welcoming him back home once again. As they pasted Grillby’s Sans couldn’t help but soak in the warmth that radiated off the building. Excitement filled his soul, this was real, this was really happening. He was home again at last, finally home! Sans quickly swung their front door open and quickly walked in despite the pain. Sans kicked his slippers off and rushed to their old, green, and lumpy couch. He jumped onto the couch let out a content sigh as he relaxed as much as he could. Papyrus laughed at his brother's antics as he followed him inside, he gently closed the door behind him and trotted to the kitchen, he began cooking dinner for Sans and himself. He has a feeling Sans must be starved and hospital food must be getting old for him.
Papyrus pulled out a bottle of ketchup from the fridge and set it on the counter, he then began his cooking escapade. He was going to make Sans his favorites to welcome him home! And another upside to this was the house didn’t feel so empty anymore, his brother was finally home! Papyrus smile at the sound of a familiar yet oddly foreign sound of snores that came from the living room. It was good to have his brother home again, and I’m sure everyone visiting tomorrow will agree with him. It was odd not having the lazy skeleton around to crack jokes every day. The underground felt empty without Sans around. Not to mention everyone has missed Sans dearly, Papyrus just hopes Sans won’t have to go back anytime soon, he knows Sans was starting to get a little cramped up in the hospital room too. He would to if he was stuck in the room for a whole month. But everything is peaceful now, everything is good, and it should stay like that for a while now hopefully. It didn't matter as long as his brother was home and okay then everything was going to be okay! He shouldn't worry too much and if something did happen, he had friends to back him up! Everything was going to be okay and he was going to make sure Sans knew that too! This was going to be the best week of his life and he'll make sure to take care of Sans the best he can! He can do it because he IS the great Papyrus after all! There's nothing he can do or tackle! His brother's illness is no exception and if that means a few sleepless nights with his brother then so be it!
Everything will be okay as long as he has his brother with him.
