Chapter Nineteen -Dreams-

The sound of rolling waves crashing over each other is such a peaceful sound, the scent of salt filling your senses, and the cold-water splashing droplets against your unexpecting warm body. Sending cold chills down your spin and forcing you to take a deep breath and breathe in all the slaty seawater air. Slowly opening his eyes, he was met with the vast ocean around him, the waves crashing against each other, the feeling of the warm setting sun casting down on his water chilled bones.

Sans blinked and looked around him, his hands were tightly curled around two thick pieces of rope that tied themselves to a large wooden arch sticking out of the sea. A wooden seat held up by the pieces of rope, his feet just bearly touch the water only grazing its surface when he moved. Looking down at the water he could see it, all the life that floated by in the ocean, plants, animals, everything. His eyes widened at the beauty of it, the sound of sea turtles splashing in sync with their friends, dolphins pushing their way through strong waves. Plants flowing gently with the waves and giving off an almost magical effect.

He took in a deep breath, he couldn't believe his eyes, the beauty around him, slowly looking up he watched the sun cast down behind the rocking waves. Slowly the night sky began to fill the world around him. The stars speckling themselves across the black canvas painted and reflected against the seawater. He had never been more amazed than he is right now, he could hear his heart pounding in his chest. Looking at the amazing concept of space tossed against the rough waters of the ocean. All the different colors reflecting back and creating the most amazing painting he had ever seen.

It only lasted for a second before the sea was lit up by more strange creatures, bio-luminescent sea animals. Their bodies glowing softly in the water bring a whole new light to the darkened oceans. Swimming in packs, bio-luminescent jellyfish pushed themselves through the waters, showing off their respective colors. Dancing in the waves it was almost like a song, how their colors played with the darkness, it looked so magical the way they danced almost like memories flashing by in wisps whispering the words of past times. Reminding him of every good night kiss that felt like a final goodbye. Reminding him of every love, of the feeling of his heart saying hello to someone new and bring them into a tight warm embrace.

Slowly the ocean grew quiet, and it was left with nothing, no animals, no bright lights, no colors. Just darkness, cold, quiet, peaceful. Sans took in the feeling, welcoming the peace and silence of it all. As moments turn into minutes he began to wonder, if this was what death felt like, was it this peaceful, this beautiful? Or was it darkness just like this?

So many questions filled and raced in his mind as he stared into the void darkness, his hands slowly letting go of the ropes next to him. He smiled softly the unknown dried tear marks next to his eyes accentuated the bags under his eyes. As soon as he let go, he could feel his body moving forward. It felt surreal the air rushing past him, and he crashed into the dark waters below. He basked in it, the feeling of water rushing around him and soon consuming him, darling him deeper and deeper into the depths.

He wondered so many things, but all he could feel was cold water and soon nothing, his bright white eye lights wandered in the darkness searching for anything, something. He was met with only darkness, if this was death, he didn't want it. It was cold and lonely. First, something beautiful became something so dark in only a matter of moments. He slowly closed his eyes and curled in on himself, taking in a deep breath he could feel the water rushing into his lungs taking his breath away.

Moments turned into minutes and those minutes turned into hours and in turn, those hours turned into days. It was all dark and quite nothing was seen, heard, scented, or felt, just darkness and him with his thoughts. Slowly a sound.

A small gentle call, their voice was warm and careful,

They sounded so upset but their voice never wavered.

It called out his name,

"Sans."

So, calming, strong, but sad, this person sounded heartbroken and was only staying strong for something. Slowly opening his eyes, he was met with a small white light, the warmth of it slowly sinking into his bones. Slowly he reached out and curled his hand around the small ball of light, bring his boney hand closer to his chest he listened to the small sound emanating from the ball of light.

"Sans."

It whispered, again and again, he hummed something new, something warm, he loved it, so much. He had no idea who it was, nor did he remember them, but he knew he loved them more than anything in the world.

"Hey, Sans."

The ball of light whispered slowly looking down and uncurling his hand the ball of light grew slowly.

"Time to wake up now."

Wake up? Had this all been a dream? Slowly closing his eyes, he pushed the ball of light closer to his chest and let it engulf him carrying him away to whatever reality he must face in the end.

---

"Brother, wake up now." The tall skeleton whispered; his voice never wavered but it carried a heavy sadness to it. Sitting in an uncomfortable tough chair his long legs pushed up against the metal railing of the hospital bed in front of him. Dried tears stuck to his cheeks and his hands were firmly wrapped around the small skeleton's hand laying in the bed in front of him. His thick wool gloves keeping his brother's cold bones warm.

Slowly Sans opened his eyes, sleep hung heavily on his eyes and it was obvious, from the way he groggily looked around, to tired and slurred speech. "Hey, Paps..." Sans whispered with a small smile on his face. Sans blinked a few times and all the while Papyrus stayed quiet, waiting for his brother to wake up before he spoke.

A few minutes passed like that before Sans spoke again, his voice was scratchy and rough, but it sounded much clearer. "Have, you, been crying bro?" Sans spoke slowly worry laced into his tone as he looked up at Papyrus. The tall skeleton smiled and lifted one of his gloved hands to his face, trying to brush back forming tears and clean his face of the tear tracks still staining his cheeks.

"Yeah...sorry brother," Papyrus whispered and lowered his gloved hand from his face, wrapping back around his brother's still cold hand. "I've just been so worried." Papyrus gave a half-hearted, saddened laugh. His eyes falling onto the hand he held so tightly, thinking that if he just held on tight enough it would never fade away. Sans sighed and slowly wrapped his hand around one of the large ones holding it.

"Everything will be alright Paps. Medic said everything was going to be okay." Sans whispered and looked up at Papyrus with a small smile, Papyrus just blinked an almost stunned expression on his face. He shook his head a troubled look on his face looking back down at the hand in front of him.

"Brother, I thought they told you. Your chances of, remission, are low, since your magic is...not what it used to be. I.... I don't want to lose you, brother....so, I've.... after the surgery...I... Sans.... how much do you remember?"

It was those words that magic Sans' soul freeze skipping a beat for a moment, how much did he forget? Or is something, is he still dreaming? Maybe he fell into a nightmare? He gritted his teeth and glanced at the floor for a moment before looking back up at Papyrus, his body felt like it was just floating there, aimlessly. Sans took a deep breath,

"Well..."

---

Sans was brought into a tight hug, strong arms encasing his body and pulling him forward. Papyrus hugging his brother close to his chest with a bright smile on his face. Tears welling up in his eyes at the words his brother just spoke. "This is amazing brother! .... Truly amazing." Papyrus whispered, he was overjoyed, Sans sighed softly and smiled hugging his brother back tightly. He was relived to and he was happy to see that look on Papyrus' face, a look of joy he hoped would never go away even in times of danger.

"Please don't cry, bro. Your tears are gonna become my tears at this point!" Sans joked laughing a bit as he pushed back already forming tears. He hated seeing Papyrus cry but something about these tears his brother shed. He can't help but just let him ball his eyes out onto his shoulder. He was happy, and it was addicting it was refreshing and slowly it was becoming his happiness too. Papyrus slowly pushed away, still holding onto Sans' shoulders as he did, he gazed down at his brother with a bright smile on his face.

"I cannot help it, brother! It's amazing! You're going to be okay! I cannot help but cry at a time like this! It's all we've ever hoped for!" Papyrus cheered slowly letting go of his brother's shoulders to pose heroically. Papyrus laughed softly and wiped the tears out his eyes and sat back down in the chair next to him. Sans rolled his eyes with a small laugh and wiped his own tears away as well. His soul swelled with so much joy it almost hurt.

"Yeah, it is pretty amazing isn't it Paps?" Sans hummed with a bright smile fixing itself onto his face. Papyrus slowly nodded and took in a deep breath slumping into the chair, he finally looked relaxed. His body slumped as if he had finally let go of some huge weight he was carrying, something that nobody could see. He closed his eyes for a small moment basking in the warmth of the sunlit room.

A moment passed like this, spent in blissful joy before Papyrus sat up in pure unadulterated excitement. His eyes snapping open he took in another deep breath, "I can't wait to tell everyone the news! Everyone will want to visit you! Oh dear, I have to contact everyone right away and tell them the good news! I- Oh goodness! I'll be right back Brother!" Papyrus abruptly stood up posing heroically one more time before running to the door, throwing it open and leaving the room a cell phone in hand.

Outer quickly spun into the room just as the door was closing behind him with a loud click. He was holding a cardboard tray of drinks and a bag in his hand. "Whoa! What was that all about?" Outer mused with an almost knowing grin on his face seeming amused by the whole situation. He glanced at the glass door looking out into the hall to watch Papyrus for a few moments, he then continued his trek over to Sans and sat down in one the chairs.

Sans hummed with an amused tone, "He's just excited, I told him what Medic said and now he's over the moon about it." Sans briefly explained and leaned back into the hospital bed behind him. Outer chuckled and set the drinks on the bedside table along with the bag in his hands, Sans glanced at the items in confusion, everything was plain and held no logos or anything on it. So maybe Outer brought them from his house? But it looked to cafe made to be anything like that. "What's all that stuff you got there?" Sans questioned rolling over onto his side to watch Outer.

"Okay, hear me out! I went to HorrorTale today! I heard that Sugar (HorrorTale Papyrus) had recently graduated cooking school, right? So apparently Sugar and Horror opened this kind of business of sorts. So, I stopped by and got some food from them, everyone is saying it's pretty good so I thought we could try it together!" Outer hummed flashing Sans a bright smile, he pulled out a small foam box from the bag and handed it over to Sans. Then he handed him a small thick cardboard drink, or rather sit it down next to him as he pulled out his own food.

"Really?" Sans muttered to himself and slowly rolled over with the food in his hand, being extra careful not to spill it. He sat up against the pillows and opened the box, the smell of fresh food wafted from the box. Sans blinked in utter confusion at the amazing smell, definitely something you wouldn't expect from HorrorTale. He smiled softly at the sight of syrup covered pancakes, they looked amazing actually. Sans blinked when something poked his cheek, looking over at Outer.

The starry skeleton had a fork pushed into Sans' cheek smiling at him with a teasing grin. "Here you go, hope you enjoy." Outer chuckled as Sans rolled his eyes and grabbed the fork,

"Thank you." He hummed and started on his eating his pancakes while chatting with Outer, it wasn't long before Papyrus joined them again and Outer even bought him some food to enjoy. The three sat in the cheer filled hospital room talking the morning away. It was almost like all the stress of this past year was fading away. All the mistrust, anger, sadness, anxiety, everything, he almost forgot about everything that happened between him and Outer. It felt like they were finally friends again.

It was wonderful,

---

The room was filled with people bustling around and chatting like there was no tomorrow, the small hospital room felt cramped, but it was almost welcomed despite the lack of space. Everyone was happy, Sans laid on his hospital bed, a small human child sitting next to him and signing away about everything he had missed. Another skeleton child sitting in his lap trying his best to understand what Frisk was singing. Outer sat in the chair next to him along with Papyrus, both of them chatting about something with bright smiles on their faces.

A tall feathers skeleton was caught up talking to the tall goat monster in the corner, it seemed like they were having a light-hearted conversation about something. A short artistic skeleton sat on the other side of the hospital bed; a bouncing ball of energy tucked away in his lap. A grump, glitching skeleton sitting next to him talking to Ink about something and soon getting scolded quietly.

A tall friendly goat monster chatted with a tall fish monster both laughing loudly about something no one had quite caught. Next to them was a small lizard monster and a robot attempting to join in on the chat but slowly ending up drifting into their own chat. A ghost monster floating next to them with headphones sitting neatly on his rounded head.

The entire room was bustling with life and happiness, Sans smiled down at the children resting on his bed. Trying to talk to one another and it soon ended up with Sans translating it most of the time. He grinned at the two kiddos and blinked when more weight was added to the squeaking hospital bed. Another small skeleton crawled onto the bed and laid over Sans' leg, the black boned skeleton smiled up at Sans.

"Mr. Classic!" PJ cheered and waved at Sans,

"Hello PJ, how have you been? Does your Dad know your over here?" Sans teased and patted PJ's head. A grin on his face, PJ pouted and hugged the lump in the sheets that made of Sans' leg.

"No, Daddy is talking to Papa. But I wanted to talk to you!" PJ cheered and scooted up, he blinked when a small hand was pressed against his head. Asy stuck a small band-aid to his forehead.

"Band-aid!" Asy cheered and bounced in Sans' lap a bright smile on his face, PJ smiles his eyes turning to stars at the sight of colorful band-aid in Asy's hands. He quickly pushed himself over to Asy both skeletons sitting in Sans' lap now.

"OH MY GOSH" PJ squealed in excitement making Asy giggling bubbly, "Do you wanna be friends?" PJ was quick to ask Asy seemed to light up at this and quickly pulled PJ into a hug.

"Friends!" Asy squealed and quickly let go to place more band-aid on PJ who happily let him do so, Frisk was quick to join and luckily for them, PJ understood what Frisk was signing. Gosh, how he wished he had a camera with him right now.

A small click sounded off to his right and he glanced over, Outer was holding his phone up taking pictures of him and the three kiddos sitting in his lap. Sans smiled and another click went off, he rolled his eyes. "Can you send me those pictures later?" Sans hummed as Papyrus leaned over Outer's shoulders to look at the pictures he was scrolling through on his phone.

"Sure. I'm definitely saving these though." Outer chuckled and grinned as he pointed out a picture to Papyrus the two now teasing Sans,

---

The 'party' was soon over, and everyone was back to their places in their AU's or hospital room. However, Papyrus remained, staying by his side and chatting, Medic had come in earlier saying he needed to talk to the brothers about something important.

Medic soon walked into the room holding a clipboard and a pen, he greeted the two skeletons with a smile. Setting the pen under the clip of the board. "Hey, you two, ready to get started?" Medic hummed and moved up to stand at the foot of Sans' bed. Papyrus nodded and leaned back into his chair giving Medic his full attention.

"So, I have this idea to help speed up your recovery time Classic, well, actually, this was more so planned because it was needed. Not to mention it would increase your chances of making it to remission. So, I've noticed that while the chemotherapy is helping, it isn't exactly killing the tumor in your leg. So, in order to remove it and make things easier on us, we want to ask you if we could operate on you?" Medic explained gently tapping his clipboard in a nervous manner, he glanced at Papyrus then back at Sans.

Sans sighed and looked over at his brother, well, if it increases his chances of getting better. He muttered to himself this did damper his extremely good mood. It was a serious situation, surgery. He glanced at Papyrus and then Medic, he closed his eyes and thought for a long moment. He trusts Medic and he knows he would only do anything that would help him. But he,

"Okay, you guys can operate on me," Sans muttered and leaned back into his hospital bed. Taking in a deep breath as Medic seemed to relax all the tension falling from his bones. "Besides this should help you guys too for any more skeletons who experience this too." Sans hummed and exhaled heavily. Medic nodded quickly and stepped next to Papyrus and handed Sans the board pointing out where he would need to sign off for the surgery.

---

The room was filled with bright lights and people, Medic was standing next to him, a mask covering his mouth and nose. Blue scrubs covered his body and gloves covered his hands; Sans could almost see him smile from the way his face scrunched up. He picked up a strange-looking mask and leaned over Sans for a moment. Something whirred to life next to him making a small humming noise.

"Okay Classic, I'm going to count back from three, we're going to put you to sleep for the duration of this, and afterward you should wake up in your hospital room. Okay?" Medic's voice sounded slightly muffled behind his mask, but he seemed so confident Sans couldn't help but be slightly nervous as Medic lowered the strange to his face. Gently pressing the plastic against his skull making sure it covered his mouth and nose.

"One..." Medic's voice was soft and the air inside the mask had a strange scent he's never encountered before. Slowly taking a deep breath he sucked in the scent,

"Two..." The world around him was getting blurry, everything seemed so distant and the roar of life seemed so far away. He slowly closed his eyes.

"Thr...e... -" The world was encased in darkness and just like that he was out like a light.

---

"Sans. The operation." Papyrus muttered; Sans glanced up at Papyrus as if being broken out of some trance. He felt his bone tense, Papyrus had look he's never seen before plastered to his face. His stomach twisted; he knew it. He knew something bad would happen, slowly pulling back the blanket on his bed, his eyes widened tears filling his eyes. His leg...

"M-my leg.... Papyrus my leg..." He frantically looked at his brother, but he seemed out of his, his mind was somewhere else, not paying attention to his brother's break down. He scrambled to pull up his hospital gown. His eye lights shrunk in pure fear, his leg, "My leg...is g-gone..." His voice cracked as the tears bubbled over, how the hell was he supposed to get around now!? He looked back up at his brother, reaching up to him. "P-papyr-" His eyes widened as Papyrus suddenly lurched forward pulling him into a tight hug.

"Brother...I am so sorry." He whispered, "I will... we'll find a way to fix this." He whispered to him, pulling him closer, Sans slowly lowered his hand and laid his head on his brother's shoulder. He sucked in a sharp breath his body was shaking.

"As long as we're together Sans. Nothing can defeat us, nothing can bring us down. Not even a missing leg."
