Chapter Fourteen -Falling Into a Feathery Embrace-
The Cafe didn't seem as busy today, it was quieter and only a few people seemed to linger inside. Soft, hushed chatter filled the silence of the peaceful Cafe. The sun was just barely kissing the horizon good night as it settled itself down for the night. A few stars were already shining dimly in the fading blue sky. Letting the fairy lights of the Cafe shine brightly, Outer slowly entered the shop a bag in hand. Mindy's Sandwiches was written out on the paper bag. The door made a soft creaking sound as Outer slowly pushed the door open, drawing the attention of a tall feathered skeleton. Outer looked around the shop in confusion seemingly looking for someone. He sighed softly and walked up the counter, he smiled when greeted by a familiar face.
"Hey 'dere lad, good see'n 'ya again. What brings 'ya 'ere?" He asked softly and leaned back, slumping lazily. His feathers seemed to bristle slightly as his wings kept refolding neatly on his back seeming quite uncomfortable. Outer tilted his head in confusion and looked passed the taller skeleton trying to see into the back.
"Feather, right? I uhm, is Classic here. I brought him some food." Outer lifted the sandwich bag, and gently set it on the counter in front of him. Feather seemed to tense and sighed heavily, he looked behind him for a moment before looking back at Outer.
"I 'taught 'dey told 'ya already. 'm sorry Outer but 'da lass is in 'da 'his-'pital." His ancient seemed to thicken in his uneasiness. He gave Outer a saddened look and slumped further. Outer looked at Feather for a moment then sighed heavily he closed his eyes.
"He hasn't been there, long right?" Outer asked hopefully, Feather seemed to bristle at the question.
"I don't 'now much lad. Swirl only 'dus so much." Feather spoke softly and stood up straight, as Outer nodded and quickly snatched the bag off the counter. He quickly stepped towards the door and threw it open. The bell in front of the door ringing viciously. Outer looked back at Feather and gave him a small smile.
"Thanks, Feather." He then quickly left and pulled out his phone as he sped walked down the sidewalk. He dialed a familiar number and held the phone to his nonexistent ear. After a few rings, someone answered the phone seeming slightly annoyed as they spoke.
"Hey Ink."
---
The hospital was as lonely and quiet as ever, at least the part never seemed to change unlike his tests every day. Sans sighed and pushed himself into his hospital bed pulling up the blanket the covered his small frame. He just wanted to sleep but every time he's closed his eyes they just seemed to flutter back open. Sans huffed softly and rolled onto his side looking out into the hall through the large window that was poorly covered by old white blinds. He closed his eyes again and tried to keep them closed. He only managed to do this for a few moments before he heard a shuffling at his door.
He opened his eyes and looked at the door in slowly sat up in gentle surprise looking at his new visitor in shock. They panted and took in deep, greedily breathes trying to get in as much oxygen as possible. "Outer?" His voice came of scratchy and low, he seemed exhausted and sitting up only made him dizzy.
"Classic, oh gosh, you had me so worried. Why didn't you call me?" Outer panted as he slowly made his way into the room gently shutting the once open door behind him. He grabbed a lone chair sitting in a corner and dragged it over settling it close to Sans' bedside. He slowly sat down and smiled at Sans tiredly.
"I-...I didn't have my phone. I'm sorry Outer." Sans spoke in a quiet tone trying not to use his voice too much. He smiled softly at the tired out skeleton and laid back down, as the world has started to spin, and he could only wish for it to stop. He sighed heavily and placed a cold hand to his head. Outer gave him a worried look and around for a moment.
"What's wrong, dose your head hurt?" He asked softly and slowly placed his chilled hand to Sans' skull. He smiled as Sans seemed to nuzzle into his hand smiling weakly at Outer, the bags under his eyes now evident. Outer's smile seemed to falter for a moment upon seeing Sans' condition.
Sans could only give him a reassuring smile as he slowly closed his eyes and sighed softly, he let his hand drop from his head. He could hear Outer shuffle next to him for a moment, he seemed to be thinking about something. Sans slowly opened his eyes,
"What's wrong?" Sans muttered and looked over Outer trying to figure out what could possibly be the matter. Outer sighed softly and cracked a small smile, a chuckle bubbling up his throat.
"I should be asking you that, you look awful." He muttered to himself and shook his head a fond smile crossing his face. Sans giggled softly and coughed a bit his sore throat unappreciative of his laughter. Outer sighed again and slowly pulled his hand away from his forehead.
Outer slowly placed his hand in his lap and looked away, "Sans...We need to talk." he muttered and took a deep breath. He slowly looked at Sans again with a newfound determination. Sans could already tell he was about to make a rash decision.
The words seemed to just tumble out of his mouth one word after another. Outer didn't stop to take a breath as he just kept talking trying not to spill his heart out. Hoping to recollect himself and stop. But the words just kept tumbling out.
Sans could only listen in shock and surprise, his eyes widening at the words that he was hearing. Another confession from his ex while he was laid in his hospital bed, sick and disoriented. Was he drunk, what made him think this could possibly be the time for this!? He could've at least waited until he felt, better couldn't he?!
Sans shook his head with a sigh and closed his eyes, he needed time to think, this was all happening way to fast. He just got into the hospital and already feels horrible, he inhaled shakily and opened his eyes once again as Outer's voice died out. He looked at the sputtering skeleton his gaze softening. Medic had explained to him that if his condition continues to go downhill like this he may not have much longer. And when he dusts, it wouldn't really matter after that right? Everyone would go with him as the original AU crumbled away with him.
What could go wrong he doesn't have much left at this point. Screw needing time to think, if he was going to die soon, he might as well let his heart guide his choices for a while. Right? He could at least have just this one thing, couldn't he? His heart has been screaming for this to happen and a little extra support from someone he cared about wouldn't hurt any.
Sans smiled at Outer who sat across from him shifting in his seat. He looked horribly nervous and never looked up to meet Sans' eyes, he seemed almost ashamed of himself and what he had said. Sans could only smile at the nervous skeleton and closed his eyes for a moment, yeah, he could let himself be selfish just this once.
Sans spoke with his final decision in mind his throat felt raw as he spoke, but he brushed it off. "Okay, then... let's go on one date, let's make the most of this night!" Sans' voice was soft sometimes fading before growing louder again. The smile on his face widening as he spoke, Outer slowly looked up to meet Sans' gaze his eyes wide, he seemed shaken by Sans' words. He sighed heavily and looked at Sans he seemed to be lost in thought for a moment. He seemed to snap out of it after a moment.
"Classic...I... I wasn't...I was just...venting." He muttered and quickly diverted his gaze to the ground. He could hear Sans inhale sharply biting back a wince.
"Outer-"
"I can't! I can't! I'm sorry...I just...can't anymore Classic..." Outer's voice seemed to shake as he spoke, he looked back at Sans with fearful eyes. "I can't have you just to lose you!" Outer hissed through fresh tears. Purple tears sliding down his cheeks as he shook softly, he was scared, he was terrified. "I just needed you to know...I love you, before...I leave. I can't see you like this anymore. How can I love a dead man...Classic?" Outer muttered softly. He looked away for only a moment before he heard a small hiccup. He looked back at Sans and his eyes widened at the sight of tears falling from his eyes.
"Is that how you see me...?" Sans hissed and sat up, "You COWARD!" Sans yelled glared harshly at Outer, he could feel his nonexistent heart-shattering. Outer stood up and glared at Sans defensively.
"Coward!? Look at yourself Classic! Your dying-!" Outer was cut off by an angry yell from Sans the smaller standing up quickly and staggering slightly.
"DON'T YOU THINK I KNOW THAT!?" He yelled glaring dizzily at Outer the world seemed to be spinning all to fast he could barely think straight like this. "Y-you think your stress about my illness!? Try being the guy that's dying with one HP and carrying the weight OF THE WHOLE DAMN MULTIVERSE ON HIS SHOULDERS!" Sans yelled and broke into a coughing fit shortly after. He tucked his face into the crease of his arm as he coughs and stumbled back. He could feel a hand grab his shoulder and stand him upright. He swatted them away and glared at the owner of those hands. "Don't fucking touch me."
"Classi-"
"GET OUT!" Sans roared and stumbled back onto his bed, he could only glare weakly now everything was spinning and he could feel his stomach churning as a massive headache started to set in. He could hear Outer's uncertain footsteps before the sound of a door creaking open and slamming shut. He let out a breath he didn't know he was holding and doubled over holding his stomach. He could feel something hot bubbling up his throat, Sans jolted up and stumbled into the bathroom connected to his hospital room. He fell to his knees and grabbed the toilet seat with a weakened grip. He the liquid bubbled into his mouth and erupted from his mouth spilling into the toilet. He groaned softly panting as he tried to catch his breath, he whimpered as he felt more of the liquid building up in his throat again. He gagged softly and shook as he vomited for the second time. Hot tears falling from his sockets faster.
---
Sans was woken up by something poking his cheek gently, he groaned and slowly opened his eyes. He must've fallen asleep in the bathroom. His cheeks felt sticky from the dried tears and he had a horrid taste in his mouth. He slowly looked at what was poking him, he didn't have the energy to tell them to stop. He was greeted with a pearly white boned face with three scars etched into the top of his skull. His pupil's different sizes, a large smile on his face it seemed almost crazed as it pushed back some on the band-aids stuck to his cheek. He wore an unclipped straight jacket, the sleeves covering his hands as he kept poking Sans' cheek.
Sans sighed and just closed his eyes, maybe he would go away after a while. He didn't have anything left in him to deal with this. A soft, childlike voice quickly caught his attention.
"Mister? Hey Mister!" Sans slowly opened his eyes and looked around before they landed back on the person poking his cheek. He seemed to giggle and pull his hand back, "Are you okay? Your birdy friend is here to see you!" They piped up and started to giggle all over again and tilted his head to the side listening to something that wasn't there. He nodded happily,
"How...how long... was I out...?" He muttered not surprise that his voice came out rough and scratchy. The skeleton tilted his head in thought and hummed for a moment again listening to something unseen.
"I found you an hour ago!" He smiled proudly, "My big bro told me to come up here! He said you looked sad!" He giggled softly and picked up a box off the floor, he struggled the peal the band-aid covering off for a moment. Once he was successful, he cheered and gently stuck the band-aid to his cheek giggling.
Sans could only smile at the kid and allow him to push the colorfully designed band-aids to his face and arms. He had completely missed the part where he talked about his friend coming to see him. Sans slowly opened his eyes again he could see the room was still dimly lit so he couldn't have fallen asleep long ago. He slowly looked up seeing a large shadow now looming over them both. He glanced at the bathroom doorway he was surprised to see Feather standing there with a very worried look on his face.
"'Ey lass." He spoke softly as if he knew how fragile Sans was, he slowly stepped into the bathroom. He didn't turn on the light or anything he simply kneeled next to Sans. "Why 'ya sleep'n in 'da floor?" His voice was deep but smooth his accent giving an almost silly tone to it. Sans just smiled weakly at him, but he didn't try to sit up again scared that he would be sick again if he did. Feather seemed to bristle at the lack of a response but sighed, he placed a gentle hand on the child's shoulder. "'Ey kiddo leave 'da skele alone fer now. He needs 'ta rest." He whispered and the child nodded happily sticking the last band-aid one before he picked up the almost empty box and skipped into the hospital room.
Feather sighed and slowly slid his hands under the small skeleton, he lifted him slowly and stood up. Sans sighed softly and hooked his hands onto Feather's jacket burying his face into his chest. He could feel Feather taking his first steps out of the restroom, he was thankful for the lack of dizziness that followed. Before he knew it, his back had touched the soft bedding of his hospital bed.
Feather gently sat him down and left to the restroom again for a moment. He could hear the water running before it stopped again. Feather then came back out of the darkened room with a damp towel. "'Ere fer 'yer face." He again spoke so softly, Sans just let him clean his face and then dab the cool water on his forehead. He smiled softly at the cold feeling happily.
He almost whined when Feather pulled the towel away, he slowly looked up at Feather as he sat down in the chair next to the bed. He could see the child sitting next to the door talking to seemingly nobody as he played with the band-aids.
His gaze was drawn back to Feather as the monster cleared his throat, he could see the worry etched into his face. Sans sighed softly and gave him a small smiled but that seemed to do nothing to calm his worry. Feather straightens in his seat and looked Sans over for a moment.
"Why 'were 'ya on 'da bathroom floor?" He asked again and placed the back of his hand on Sans' forehead. He drew his hand back seeming slightly relieved about something. Sans took a deep breath and shook his head.
"Me and Outer...go into a fight..." He muttered and closed his eyes he could feel the tears welling in his eyes all over again. He blinked his eyes open again in surprise as a gentle hand wiped his tears away.
"Don't cry, lass." Feather whispered trying his best to comfort him, but it was clear he had no idea what to do. This brought a small smile to Sans' face as tears started to fall down his cheeks. He just watched as Feather seemed to panic for a moment and brought the towel back to his face wiping his tears away. Which were quickly replaced with new ones just as quick, he was surprised by Feather's next action.
He was gently lifted from his bed and brought into a tight hug; he could feel the rumble in his chest as he spoke. "'Come on lass, don't cry, 'yer break'n 'meh heart 'ere." He whispered and rubbed gentle circles into his back. Sans tried to stop his crying but the harder he tried the more he just seemed to cry. He looked up at Feather through teary eyes and gripped onto his fluffy jacket.
"I... I don't want to die.... I don't want to...be sick anymore!" He cried out and pushed his face into his chest as he sobbed. He trembled in Feather's arms as the other tried to calm him the best he could.
"I know...I know it hurts, but 'ya half 'ta be strong. I know it's hard lass. But... I'll be 'ere for 'ya 'da whole 'wey." He spoke softly seeming unsure of his words at first, but it fell into more of a confident tone as he finished. He slowly nodded and just cried into his chest shaking as he did.
Feather sighed softly and gently lifted Sans of the bed again, he sat himself on the bed and settled Sans in his lap. Letting the smaller cry into his chest until he couldn't cry anymore. He made the choice and now he has to stick to it. Not that he would mind really. Sans deserved to be happy and if he needs to be the one to do that for him so be it. He hummed softly and held Sans close. He could only watch Sans cry, for now, he was at a loss of words really.
It'll get better, it just has to.
----
Light leaked in from the closed curtain's spilling into the room. The sound of chirping birds echoed through the room. Sans groaned softly as he slowly opened his eyes, the bright light disturbing his sleep. He looked around tiredly, he blinked hearing a beating soul next his head, it was so soothing, he slowly looked up. A small smile crossed his face. He'd have to thank Feather for being such a good friend to him. He took in a deep breath and closed his eyes again, he felt Feather shift for a moment.
"Morni'n lass." He yawned and stretched as much as he could with Sans resting on top of him. Sans slowly looked up at him and yawned too, he took in another deep relaxed breath.
"Good morning." He hummed and smiled at him opening his eyes again. "Oh, and... Feather, thanks for helping me last night. I needed a friend." Feather cracked a smile at this and chuckled softly.
"Sure lass. 'm always happy 'ta help. But fer now, let's get 'ya cleaned up, 'yer a mess." His laughter grew as Sans started to fuss that he didn't look that back, but then again, he hasn't looked into the mirror for a while. Feather ended up winning by end of their playful argument. Feather had agreed to bring him the comfiest shirt he owned, so he didn't have to wear that awful hospital gown much longer.
Sans smiled as he slowly shifted in his now-empty bed, he slowly got up and made his way back to the bathroom to take a shower. Feather promised to be back with a shirt by the time he got out, so he might as well keep up with his end of the deal. Sides, all this playfulness has really cheered him up for the most part. He needed this, someone to escape with, to make him feel better and wanted. Sans sighed his soul still ached with the fresh pain of rejection, but he'll be okay. He can get through this. He can do it,
He can beat this...
Right?
