Chapter Five -Stary Nights And Classic Jokes-
Sans laid in his hospital bed sighing, the room was dark, and the currents closed by the nurse that had walked by. But that light of the moon still seemed to poor in and the beautiful stars could be seen through the cracks in the currents. It was beautiful, the way the stars shimmered amongst the dark sky. The moon seemed to draw Sans into a slight trance, the moonlight that beamed down onto his face was relaxing and brought an enjoyable quite to his now normally hectic life. Sans sighed softly and closed his eyes reminiscing in the peace he loved so much. He quickly opened his eyes and jolted slightly at the sound of a knock at his door. Sans looked at the door that led to his room, only he was met with a friendly grinning face. "Sorry, didn't mean to scare you." Outer chuckled and walked into the room, he held a large bundle of white and red roses. "Brought you some flowers, thought you might like them!" Outer hummed with the same happy smile plastered to his face, he walked to Sans' bedside and placed the large bundle of flowers into the empty vase next to his bed. Sans' small smile only seemed to grow at this, it happened a lot when Outer was around, the peace and comfort Outer would bring with him never failed to make Sans happy. Outer arranged the flowers for a moment to make the perfect mix of red and white, Sans just watched as the beautiful colors blended perfectly. Outer was done within a matter of seconds and he sat in the chair next to Sans' bed. "So, how was your day?" Outer asked softly, he has a feeling he already knows but wanted to hear it from Sans himself. Sans sighed and shrunk back slightly under Outer's expecting gaze.
"Not great, but PJ drew me a picture." Sans smile at the cute memory playing in his mind. It brought tears to his eyes how true it was. Outer smiled softly at the sight of tears that filled the ill skeleton's eyes and slowly slid down his cheeks. Sans laughed softly wiping away his tears with the blanket. "Th-then I talked to Ink for a while! But...Medic... he can't keep up with the payments fo- for my treatment and I get it! I-I really do...it just sucks." stress seemed to fill the poor skeletons soul weighing him down. Outer sighed and moved to sit next to Sans on his hospital bed. The bed seemed to cave a bit under the two's weight but was in no danger of collapsing. Outer wrapped his arm around Sans brought him close hugging him tightly.
"Tell you what Classy. I'll pitch in, with all this work in my AU with NASA and such, I have money to spare." Outer sweet words only seemed to make Sans cry harder. He hates having to ask for help like this, but it'd be stupid to refuse Outer's offer, not that Outer would let him anyway. He would find a way to pay him back without him finding out. He owes Outer that much at least, especially for coming back to spend time with after the whole break up. He did miss Outer and moments like this, but he'd never admit it.
"I-I'll pay you back..." Sans whispered through his tears but only received a quite 'no.' in response. He sighed heavily and leaned into Outer's chest falling silent. He didn't have the energy to argue that point with Outer, he could only muster a soft 'fine' in response as he closed his eyes in a sad attempt to stop his tears. His lip trembled as he ended up sobbing into Outer's chest. The thoughts that consumed his mind slowly became too much for him. Sans could use a good cry right now with no judgment or pity from his friends.
...
As the time passed Sans grew quiet and peace slowly returned, it was far into the night but neither skeleton seemed to care. The only sound to be heard was a soft dripping from Sans' morphine drip and an occasional beep from his soul monitor. Outer hummed and rubbed Sans' arm soothingly comforting the now calm skeleton. Outer cracked a smile as he looked at Sans as he thought of a joke. He hoped a few jokes would cheer Sans up and raise his spirits. "You know Classic, you almost cried Saturn's rings into a longer life span." Outer teased a bit his grin growing at the sight of Sans' small smile.
A small snort was heard from Sans shortly after the smile arrived on his face. "Ha, ha, very funny Star boy." Sans retorted with a large smile on his face again. Sans looked up at Outer for a moment before gazing back at the window. Sans looked past the curtains trying to get a better look at the stars.
Outer chuckled and interrupted Sans' stargazing for a moment, "Did you ever hear about Galileo?" Outer held back a laugh as Sans' smile grew.
"Yeah, he knew everything about constellations, some might say his knowledge of the night sky was..." Sans broke into a fit of laughter unable to hold in his giggles from the upcoming pun.
Outer's grin grew as he finished Sans' joke, "Quite astronomical?" the two quickly broke into quiet laughter over the joke. As time passed more and more jokes were shared between the two, the intensity of the pun war making it hard to keep their laughter quiet. Soon enough the room was quiet again after their small pun war, Sans just watched the stars from the cracks in the currents. Outer slowly got up letting Sans fall into the bed from his previous resting place on Outer's chest. Sans huffed in slight irritation at the sudden change and watched as Outer swiftly crossed the room and opened the currents. Outer quickly returned to his spot on the bed and smiled at Sans' look of awe. "Pretty huh?" Outer asked softly, looking at the shimmering night sky filled with beautiful glittering stars. Sans could only nod as he let himself get lost in the stars, it was beautiful. Outer leaned near Sans resting his chin on Sans' shoulder and pointed out a small constellation. "There's the little dipper." Outer whispered Sans' smile grew as he pointed to a constellation next to the little dipper.
"Found the big dipper," Sans spoke breathlessly at the sight of stars and constellations that filled the night sky.
"Did you know it's bad luck to find the little dipper but not the big dipper?" Outer whispered making Sans laugh softly, the shorter rolled his eyes and looked at Outer from the corner of his eye. He could see the outstretched smile on Outers face as he gazed down at Sans.
"Sounds like someone is super superstitious." he teased softly making Outer snort at the comment and shake his head softly. He rolled his eyes as well and they both shifted their gaze back to the window.
"As if, you'll never see me throwing salt over my shoulder any time soon." Outer chuckled his smile growing at Sans' teasing, two could play at the game but he'll spare Sans for now.
"Don't get salty now that I caught you red-handed." Sans looked over his shoulder at Outer with a large grin on his face. Outer's face scrunched up and in a fit of horribly faked anger. Sans giggled at Outer's little attempt to look offended.
"How dare you!" Outer gasped dramatically and scooted back on the bed he placed a hand on his chest in mock pain. "The Aquarius in you must be taking over!" Outer cried out jokingly making Sans laugh at his dramatic act. Outer couldn't hold his grin back anymore as a smile broke across, they starry skeletons face.
"I'm not even an Aquarius dummy!" Sans snorted his smile growing as he laughed softly. Outer chuckled and shook his head slowly as he scooted closer to Sans once again.
"Must be the cold January winds then. It would explain the cold shoulder." Outer huffed chuckling Sans snorted once more and looked away covering his mouth to laugh. A light blush covering his cheeks from holding in his laughter. Outer soon joined in his laughing fit trying his best to keep quiet.
Sans quickly quieted himself, "That was very funny Outer, quite clever indeed." Sans spoke softly trying to compose himself once more. Outer slowly stopped laughing as well and nodded a small yawn escaping his mouth. Sans yawned quickly after; Outers yawn quite contagious. "You made me yawn!" Sans whined jokingly making Outer laugh again.
"Sorry, sorry."
...
Seconds had turned into minutes and minutes had turned into hours. All that time was filled with quiet and muffled laughter, peaceful silence, and stargazing. Quite chatter would sometimes fill the room as the two talked or started another pun war. It was amazing, it was what Sans needed to relax for once since being here. Outer smiled as Sans stared into the never-ending sky looking and watching every star he could see. Outer found himself staring into Sans' eyes before quickly looking back at the sky again. In hindsight Outer couldn't remember when the stars had disappeared, the sky was painted a pitch-black devoid of any light. Suddenly Outer's gaze drifted back at Sans and that was when he saw it, the stars can't compare to his smile and the twinkle in his eyes. All the beauty that filled the sky couldn't even hold a candle to Sans' soul and the love within it. All Outer could think at the time was this one thought that kept ringing in his head all night and only grew in volume every time he looked at Sans.
'You stole the stars from the night sky like you stole my heart from my chest.'
...
The peaceful night was soon over and Outer had to leave, Sans hated saying goodbye but Outer promised to be back soon, and Sans would hold him to his word. Sans laid in his hospital bed having gotten no sleep the following night. He felt a tiredness pull at his non-existent eyelids and weigh down his soul. But it didn't hurt this time, it didn't feel forced, just peaceful. As if he could sleep this time, with no worries of what was to come or what would happen. Sans let a smile cross his skull once more as he sunk into the hospital bed. He closed his eyes slowly and felt himself quickly drift off; the smell of roses filled his senses. It was beautiful, calming, and relaxing, Sans couldn't help but let himself drift off to sleep. The memories of last night playing in his head like a movie and for once this was a dream Sans didn't want to wake up from. The room was filled with a peaceful, happy feeling as Sans slept giving the skeleton a warm and fuzzy feeling. Papyrus would be lying if he said he wasn't shocked when he had entered the room that afternoon. But the roses were a beautiful add on to the room, it was a nice change, one that they all needed and with the news that Papyrus just got from Medic, he has a feeling Sans wouldn't be losing that smile anytime soon. He hopes that smile would stay there for a long time and if it ever left that it would come back just as quickly. Papyrus had the largest smile on his face when Sans woke up that following day. Sans gave his brother a confused but happy smile, he chuckled at his brother's excitement with a drowsy undertone to it. Papyrus quickly uttered the news that he had been given to pass on. Papyrus' smile only grew when Sans' face light up with pure joy a genuine smile gracing his face for the first time in months.
