Chapter Eighteen -The Test-

"What happened?" Papyrus hummed for a moment, "Well, a lot really, let's see, Sans has made two friends with two skeletons named Feather and Asy. Wonder where those two ran to off really." Papyrus mumbled and sighed shaking that off, "Well, to start off, let's talk about Sans' condition." Papyrus noted gesturing towards his sleeping brother, Outer nodded and listened closely.

The words that left his mouth made Outer's soul twist and turn, he hated hearing that Sans was in just a sick state. That he was hurting, just hearing all of this made him wish Sans never got sick in the first place. Or that he had been their all that time he was sick, helping him get better or at least be there for him through it all.

----

A tall skeleton stood in the hospital lobby, his jet-black wing were nicely folded and tucked away. He looked around, the hospital seemed rather busy today, people were bustling around the halls of the large building.

the hospital seemed to be bustling with life, with patience and staff alike walking around, even the children who seemed to never leave the hospital were up and about. The skeleton sighed and scratched his head, he clicked his tongue as he looked around. He was looking for a kiddo in particular.

He jumped when someone grabbed his hand, he quickly looked down at the child that had grabbed his hand. He blinked in surprise seeing Asy standing there with a bright smile, he sighed, the child seemed to have more band-aids on him than last time they met. He gave Asy a soft smile,

"Birdy!" The child chirped, excitement shining in his eyes, the kid really was covered head to toe in band-aids but seemed happy about it non the less.

"Hey Asy, what 'ya been up 'ta? It's nice 'ta see 'ya again." The skeleton spoke in his normal thick accent, but Asy seemed to understand just fine, he giggled and bounced on his feet.

"Play with the other kids! It's so much fun here!" Asy cheered, "Are you here to see Mister?" the child questioned, it has been a while since he's seen Sans himself. Feather nodded with a smile and held up a paper bag for Asy to see.

"Bought 'em some 'ting to eat. Wan 'ta come with me?" As soon as he asked Asy was already attempting to pull Feather to Sans' room. Tugging on his arm with all the strength they had, Feather chuckled and followed the child acting like he was pulling him along. He made sure to keep his hand held carefully in his just in case Asy would fall messing around.

While walking to the elevators on the far side of the room Feather looked around the hospital. Everything looked to have been livened up quite a bit with some new decorations and pictures scattered about. Maybe even some new tools they could use to, that would explain why staff looks more relaxed and happier. It made the place seem more welcoming and friendly, less of a place that could have your possible death bed. Feather shook his head trying not to think of it like that. Sides today was a good day he finally got to see Sans again, all the time he spent with Sans the first month had to be made up in his work. Cody couldn't cover for the two of them forever, he sighed and stopped when they reached the elevator.

He stood and watched Asy for a moment in silent amusement, the child stood on their tippy toes desperately trying to press the up arrow. Asy huffed and jumped a little to reach it with no success, he looked up at Feather for help. Feather shook his head and smiled, he put the paper bag to hold in his mouth, biting down before letting go. He reached out to Asy and picked him up, lifting him up high enough to press the button. Asy quickly pressed down on the up arrow smiling as it lit up. He looked at Feather with sparkles in his eyes, "I did it! I did it!" he cheered.

Feather slowly set the child down and pulled the paper bag out of his mouth as he patted the child's head. "'Ya sure did." He hummed and waited for the elevator doors to open, Asy bounced around him in excitement, now once again holding Feathers hand.

Slowly the elevator doors opened with a soft ping, a few people got off before Feather and Asy entered. Pushing the button to the floor they wanted to travel to, the stood and chatted for a bit, the elevator doors soon closing and sending the two on their way.

He picked up Asy just enough for him to press the button, Asy lit up and looked up at Feather, "Thank you Birdy!" Asy giggled as he was set down, they waited there for a moment, the door opening with a ding and they were off to see their friend.

---

Outer smiled as Sans tiredly rambled on about something, he was mainly talking about how much he missed the ketchup from Grillby's restaurant. He felt like a huge weight had been lifted from his chest from this morning's interaction. He chuckled softly as Sans sleepy threw his arms in the air.

"And Paps won't even bring it to me! He says that getting drunk isn't what I need. But I don't even get drunk off ketchup!" He grumbled to himself and flopped back into his hospital bed, a yawn escaping him as soon as he laid down.

"Man, that is crazy. If I didn't know any better, I would think Orange gave you ketchup when I wasn't looking." Outer tease gently and smiled fondly at the pouting skeleton in front of him. Sans just rolled his eyes and pulled the blanket up, covering his face slightly. Outer sighed, he looked exhausted, he just wished Sans would sleep or maybe even take a nap. But he knew better than to hold his breath. He knew full well that Sans was in pain despite how well he hides it, he just wished Sans would get better already. Outer sighed and leaned back in his chair, closing his eyes.

A moment of silence passed, soon a heavy knock rang from the glass door, Outer flinched at the sudden noise, opening his eyes he glanced at Sans who was still tucked into the covers of the hospital bed. Looking at the door he pushed himself up from the chair and walked over to the door. Peering through the glass of the door as he opened it, he wasn't too shocked to see two skeletons standing there. He was, however, surprised that they fit the description Papyrus gave him, he didn't expect to see them so soon, but that's just his luck isn't? He's sure Sans told them about him and the stupid stuff he did.

He sighed and opened the door slowly, greeting the two skeletons with a smile, "Hey guys, what brings you here. To see Classic, I assume?" Outer questioned stepping out of the way to let them in. Holding the door open for them as they walked in, the child holding the feathered skeleton's hand must be Asy. They seemed as lively as Papyrus described and the other must be Feather. Papyrus really got them down to the letter, they match the description perfectly.

"I didn't expect 'ta see a visitor 'wit Classic." Feather noted and led Asy inside who bounded over to the bed. "Asy be careful 'wit 'em 'kay?" Feather quickly added walking over to one of the free chairs.

"Yeah, I've been here since this morning, thought I should at least visit him after a while," Outer spoke softly, scratching the back of his neck he walked back over to his seat and sat down with a sigh. Feather just nodded and watched Asy ramble to Sans about something, Sans just smiled and listened to Asy.

"So, who are 'ya? What'sa name?" Feather questioned looking over at Outer, he recognized him from somewhere, but he couldn't quite place a name to him. Outer glanced at Feather and looked down at the floor, folding his hand he debated on whether or not he should respond. He was bound to find out at some point.

"Outer, my names Outer, I assume your Feather?" Outer pointed out looking up at the skeleton, Feather seemed rather calm for hearing his name. Feather just nodded looking at Sans and Asy, the two talking away. "You and the kiddo visit Classic often?" Outer muttered feeling bad for leaving Sans to these two. Feather sighed and leaned back into his chair, looking up at the roof with a tired look.

"Yeah, we try 'ta, whenever I can get away 'ferm work." Feather gave a short answer, Outer could already tell that Feather wasn't exactly pleased with him. If it were the other way around, he wouldn't be either. He looked around the room, trying to focus on anything else other than the building tension between him and Feather.

"Hey, Outer," Sans' slightly sleepy and scratchy voice broke him out of his thoughts, he looked back at Sans. The sick skeletons eye lights were locked onto him with worry, Outer gave him a small reassuring smile. Sans sighed and looked at the door, "How long will you be staying here?" Sans asked softly but despite his soft voice, Outer felt a twinge in his soul. Did Sans want him to leave?

"I uh, I'll be staying for a while, I took the day off work, so uh, I'm free the whole day." Outer tripped over some of his words. He didn't want to make it sound like he would be staying the whole day unless Sans was okay with it. But he didn't want to sound like he was leaving right away either.

"Okay," Sans whispered a small smile on his face, he then looked back at Asy and continued their conversation about a new cartoon Asy had been introduced to.

---

Time seemed to fly Sans couldn't believe how fast it went by, he almost wished it hadn't gone that fast. Before he knew it, Medic was in the room, checking up on him and then wheeling him to an MRI. He sighed and leaned back into the wheelchair, Outer was walking and talking to Medic along the way. He smiled, he couldn't help it, Outer was finally coming back to him and actually trying. He never thought it would happen, but he's proud of him non the less, he's really trying to catch up on everything he missed.

"Well, from tests' I've run, we have no idea what stage he's in. My guess would be stage two, but with the magic the runs from his soul, it sometimes messes with the MRI. The magic blurs the images the MRI gives us making it hard to read. So, we hope today we'll get a clear answer, I've had Sci make some modifications to the MRI, he will be attending the screening as well." Medic explained most of what's been going on the whole while Classic had been in the hospital, it was true. His magic fluctuations had been screwing up everything, and the medication they've been giving him to fix it is awful. It makes him so incredibly sick, being the first skeleton recorded in medical history to come down with cancer was most likely going to be the death of him.

"So, you think this test should go well then, from what I've read we've really made some advancements in the medical field lately," Outer noted, Sans glanced up at them, the two were locked deeply into conversation. Sans sighed and zoned out their conversation looking back ahead of him. Medic was wheeling him down the winding halls of the hospital, some stretchers lined the hallway walls. Doors leading to hospital rooms and testing rooms lined the walls, some decorations hung from the white painted walls to give it more of a welcoming feeling.

Soon Medic stopped at a door the two large metal doors leading to a loud metal machine in which he admittedly hated. Medic grabbed his ID badge scanning on a sensor next to the door. The door buzzed for a moment before slowly swinging open, Sci was standing in the room picking up his tools.

The skeleton perked up and looked at the group of three, he smiled at them and set the last of his tools in the box next to him. "Hey guys, just in time I just finished up. Also hello Classic, it's been a while. How are you feeling?" Sci asked softly pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose.

"As good as I can feel with all that's going on." Classic answered, trying to be as vague about how he felt as possible. Sci just nodded and smiled worriedly at Sans, picking up the box next to him Sci waved at the other two and walked into the viewing area, Medic sighed and wheeled Sans over to the bed of the machine.

"Alright Classic, let's get this done!" Medic enthused trying his best to be positive,

---

Medic sat in a chair next to Outer, computer screens facing them and slowly sifting through images. Images of Sans' bones shifting through layer and layer, Outer watched carefully trying to spot irregularities where he could. Now he was no doctor, but he did read up quite a bit on what cancer looked like especially through x-ray images.

Medic smiled he seemed happy with the clarity of the images, "Thank you Sci this helped a lot you have no idea. I have no idea how I could repay you! Please if you need anything let me know!" Medic praised with excitement, Sci's face flushed a bright green, he was quick to dismiss the compliments with a wave of his hand.

"All in a day's work, think nothing of it, besides, I owe Classic a favor anyway, so anything that helps him, right?" Sci chuckled nervously scratching the back of his neck, he seemed flustered by the praises. Medic laughed softly and nodded,

"I guess your right, but even so, thank you, how about I treat you to lunch after this!" Medic offered, Sci seemed to flinch at the idea, but when he caught a glimpse of Outer's grin, he sighed and agreed. "Great! I'll see you at the end of my shift!" Medic paused the images; an hour had passed since they started the screen anyway. He stood up and walked out of the viewing room and over to Sans. Stopping the machine and helping him out, Outer spun around to face Sci in his chair, a large grin on his face.

"So, a date with a doctor?" He teased his grin just growing the more Sci's blush grew, the small nerdy skeleton glared at Outer and hissed at him.

"Shut up, it's not like that! It's just lunch!" Sci waved off Outer's idea and huffed watching Medic work.

"If you say so, buddy." Outer teased before spinning around and watching Medic as well.

---

Medic stood in the hospital room with Outer, Feather, and Asy, a screen hanging off the wall, a bright blue light shining from the screen. Medic attached two printed pictures from the MRI to the screen. The x-ray images showing up perfectly with the light illuminating it,

"Well, I'm sure you've noticed the images look better already. Now, Classic, we took a full-body MRI. You can see some of the cancerous masses in only a few bones now, your leg looks much better, all we would have to do is remove the section of bone and allow it to form back over time." Medic explained using a dry erase marker to outline what he was talking about, the group of skeletons listened closely to what Medic had to say on the matter. Asy looked up at Sans confused, Sans just giving Asy a small smile before listening back on Medic.

Outer nodded and interjected as soon as Medic took a breath, "Do you know what stage it is?" Outer questioned quite desperate to know himself, depending on the stage means life or death at this point. Medic sighed and pointed out a few things with his marker.

"Well with the recent modifications Sci did on the MRI, we have more of an understanding, as well the biopsy we took earlier, Classic, we've come to understand you have stage two bone cancer." Sans felt his soul swell up as soon as Medic spoke those words, he couldn't tell whether it was anxiety, happiness, or depression. Maybe it was a mix of all three he took a deep breath waiting for the worst. He didn't know what to expect from all of this,

Outer was quick to the point the question everyone wanted to know, "Is Classic going to get better?"

Medic sighed and glanced at the x-rays then at Classic, holding onto the clipboard tightly, he spoke those life-changing words. Speaking in a clear low tone,

"Well, Classic, your...-"

Tears filled Classic's eyes as the words hit him, the world around him seemed to freeze and his soul skipped a beat. He couldn't believe it, he almost couldn't take it, a small smile formed on his face,

"Going to get better, many humans have made it into remission, and I think with enough work. You'll be out of this hospital for good." Medic explained with a large smile on his face, he chuckled at the wide, tearful smile on Sans' face.

Outer quickly looked at Sans and brought him into a tight hug, tears welling up in his own eyes, Sans laughed as he was soon swarmed with tight hugs. He gave Medic a bright smile,

"Thank you." He whispered, Medic just shook his head and relax a bit,

"Think nothing of it, just comes with the job." Medic chuckled his own soft smile plastered to his face. The room swelled with happiness, the depression that once loomed over everyone who entered faded replaced with pure joy.

Sans sighed softly, relaxing into the hugs he looked at the blanket that covered his legs, "I can't wait to tell Papyrus." Sans whispered and looked up at Outer with a bright smile, Outer just chuckled.

"I can't wait for you to go home and see everyone." Outer chuckled and slowly let go of Sans just as everyone else did, Sans rolled his eyes and smiled at the thought of that.

"Yeah, I can't wait to go home. I can't wait to be home again." Sans whispered and for the first time a hopeful smile stretched across his face.
