chapter 4
two weeks later:
she had just received the reports from the hospital. before anyone else could see the envelope, she snatched it from the pile of mail and rushed upstairs to close herself in a room just so that she could read the reports herself.
her hands were trembling, she tried to open the envelope but her hands didn't want to.
gauri: I have to open these.
she took her deep breath and tried to open the envelope but still she couldn't.
she was scared. once again fear found her. it spoke to her in its cackling voice. it told her legs to go weak, her stomach to lurch and her heart to ache.
gauri in mind: just open it gauri.
she managed to open it with her trembling hands and took out the papers. they were in Hindi which was good for her because she didn't understand English.
she read through every word slowly and just like that the reports fell from her hands, landing on the floor and she along with it.
she was as still as a statue on the cold floor, blood was drained from her face, her eyes were full of shock.
she grabbed the reports and read through page 2 again.
'gauri singh oberoi has leukaemia'
she read through that very line again and again till tears rolled down her cheeks. she slowly stood up and threw the reports to one side.
as much as she tried to hold it in, the pain came out like an uproar from her throat in the form of a silent scream. the beads of water started falling down one after another, without a sign of stopping. she hit the wall and tried to scream, but her voice was melted by the sound of the place. the muffled sobs wracked against her chest. the world turned into a blur, and so did all the sounds.
hasn't life tortured her enough?
her mother passed away as soon as she was born and shortly her dad. she was put into a mental asylum at a very young age.
but somehow she managed to ran away only to be adopted by some sweet people who soon died and she ended up in care of their relatives who did nothing but destroy her both mentally and physically.
forced to be kaali Thakur's. she is now in a marriage that is full of hatred from his side and love from her side.
and now leukaemia.
cancer.
she wiped her tears, grabbed her phone and dialled in a number.
person: hello dr ira here.
gauri: hello doctor, I have just received my reports. it states I have leukaemia. is this really true?
ira: yes gauri, this is true. I know it is shocking. does your family know about your disease yet?
gauri: no.
ira: do tell them soon.
gauri: ok.
she cuts the phone, crying once again.
fate has put her in a battle of life and death.
but the question was who was going to help her fight this battle?
where there is a high chance that death will win over life?
where life doesn't have much of a chance to win?
will death win?
or will life be stronger than death for once?
can one fight this battle alone?
