Chapter Five

Once Marshall and Chase ended their conversation, it was decided that the Alsatian would settle down for a quick power nap.

All the food he consumed were probably churned properly by his intestines by now and it's been half an hour already since Marshall newly arrived.

"Need anything before I go?" The white coated canine with black fur dotting him queries, halting on his tracks before the elevator officially transports him back down.

Swaying his head sideways, he tells him that there won't be anything else and thanked him. They both smiled at each other, and there went Marshall.

While riding on the mechanical device, that same enthusiasm that were painted on him slowly washed away as he descends into the sardine of people and pets.

Upon arrival, everyone looked quite busy watching whatever is on the television. Ryder and Jake were preparing themselves to inspect the outside the look-out, in case there were any damages or so.

"Same old." He thought to himself as he slips into the lounge area, purposefully avoiding the Cockapoo. In order to establish that, he situated himself right beside Rubble in the corner.

"Hey Marshall!" He greets him with his usual unintentional raspy voice; in return, the Dally smiles and asks if he doesn't mind sitting beside him — which luckily, Rubble didn't mind and patted the spot beside him.

When he finally sat down, he found himself watching an all time favorite — Apollo the super pup.

The canine actually likes the said show; it was his way to escape reality for a little while. With all the amazing moves his fictional hero performs, it got him feeling amazed and drop in awe.

Of course though, he found himself sometimes disliking the idea of watching it and never knew why. We can assume that he probably just had one of those days.

Sighing, he heard Ryder and Jake bid their farewell as they will temporarily leave them alone for a quick while to purchase more dog food.

"Have a safe trip!" Say the mongrel as this is the time the duo took their departure.

The whole morning was quite uneventful. Noise coming from the tv continues to run in the background as everyone had their eyes glued onto the screen.

Marshall had locked and looked away from the tv itself multiple times already, he did so due to the fact that his eyes felt sore for some reason.

Rubbing the itch away, the English Bulldog picked this up and questioned him about this, he simply replied that he must've had a rough sleep — which was the half-truth.

Breathing deeply in and out, he threw his chin onto the fluffy cloths of the pillow as he awaits for the time to pass by. Usually, it were to be quick, but lately, it's been slow and stressful in his opinion.

He was beginning to think that Everest was one unfortunate mana given to the team.

In the midst of his train of thought, there was a ring in the counter. Immediately, the dally picked this up and went to investigate the dinging.

To his surprise — not, it was a call from Mayor Goodway, and it seems that Ryder had accidentally left his device.

Remembering Ryder's words that it is better to help despite of not being in the mood and having a dispute of whether he should or he should not, he picked it up anyway.

He assumed it had to do something with the Adventure Bay clean up, and he was right. The Mayor continued to plea for assistance in clean-up of the town, who looked like a hot mess after the said storm came to mess it up.

Completely not paying attention at all, when he knew the Mayor had finished her novel of requests, she said that the PAW Patrol will be on their way to lend a lending paw then hung up.

"Seriously. Where are the other people to help? Can't we just catch a day's breath?" He complains, not vocally though, before he went to break the news to everyone.

Engines from different sorts of vehicles began to roar to life; gears and mechanics of sorts began to twist and turn and function accordingly like that of synchronized soldiers.

Rocky and Rubble were sent early to go to the town hall to get an evaluation of the mess, while the Cockapoo checks up on the Shepherd and explained everything.

Because of this, they decided to use the allotted time to gather more materials for the clean-up, in case the duo had left anything. Having this strategy deployed, this would save them fuel and get the job done in no time.

Aimlessly walking around the floral-section of the look-out, Everest had took notice that the three original members were finishing off with their agenda before heading off to the town.

She realized though, that she has no vehicle that she could use to take herself there easily. One option she's left with was to question any of them if they'd be willing to give her a ride.

Walking over to Skye, she waved a paw in the air as the Cockapoo herself took notice of this and waved back.

"Hey Everest! What's up?" She asks as she began to hook up all sorts of things onto her copter's hook.

Shyly, the Husky politely questioned if she can tag along with her copter.

"Oh, sorry Everest.. My copter's too small to fit more than one passenger. You know how it went on our test-to-go."

Reminiscing the recent event, it was a squishy experience. Actually, it was a miracle that the two managed to sardine themselves in it.

"Yeah you're right," He laughs at the faint memory that played before her "I guess I'll ride with someone else. Thanks Skye." As she walked off towards Zuma.

Upon arrival, she could clearly hear the noticeable loud clank of different sorts of equipment clashing themselves together.

Wiping the blossoming sweat, he turned around and were surprised to see the Husky herself, in front of her.

"Ah!" He says in acknowledgment, smiling at her "What bwings you here?" He began as to continue with what he left-off. Impedimenta of sorts collided along with each other, which created an ear-ringing in the midst of their interaction.

"Can I tag along with you on your hovercraft?" She shyly asks him as this caught his attention, ears perking up in attention.

Turning around to face her properly, leaving his take undone for a short while, then tells her "I'd like to Evewest. Weally! But it seems that I've placed way too much stuff alweady. Unless I could twansfew these to someone, but that would take a lot of time.."

"Oh.. It's alright! You don't have to move them. I'll just find someone else, thanks though!" She tells him, which the Chocolate Lab politely replies back and carries on with what he was doing.

As Everest slowly strays away from him, she could hear he began to have an on-line call with Rocky, who seems to be discussing something related to the town clean-up.

Looking around the area, she noticed and realized that everyone's left already or have already gone to the town proper. Chase's still resting, and he wasn't allowed to participate in the said activity.

Like a lemon squeezing on a wound, she had her eyes wide open at the painful obvious option she'll have to settle. It was basically a yes-or-yes situation; you're left with only one recourse.

Dreading to go there, she sucked it up anyway and walked over to her one and only choice left and presented herself before them.

"H-hey.." She began. Which was shortly followed by someone familiar to look at her; a Dally. His eyes looked at her in surprise and full-well held an apprise that has a similar one to what her orbs has.

"Oh, you.." The Dalmatian mentions, not very buoyant with her presence. But because the Dalmatian himself had already enough of the awkward tension, he decided to question her what she wanted.

Hesitating whether she'll tell him or not, slowly but surely, she says "Can I.. Come with you?"

Marshall already knew that whatever she has to say is an idea he'll never will be on board with. He's surprised as to why he even bothered to question her.

Assessing what she said, he knows that Rocky hasn't started assembling of her own vehicle. It was because she still had no role as of the moment, and her skill assessment test were cut short due to the unexpected turn of events.

Feeling a little wave of sympathy for the Husky, despite of wanting to shun the idea, he offered her that she could ride, but had to balance behind him as there really is no proper space for her to sit left, but behind him — the truck roof.

"Thank you!" The Husky began, unable to contain her happiness and had suddenly leapt to the Dalmatian in glee.

Clearly in a weird position, Marshall awkwardly detached himself from that as an embarrassed Husky followed. An apology came next and Marshall just shrugged it off, for the reason that he doesn't want to dwell more on it.

"Just.. Hop on the truck. We'll be leaving soon." He tells her, as she walked away to fetch some other important things to toss onto his truck.

While the Dally busies himself, wasting time away from her as much as possible, the Husky herself got into the truck and followed his instructions. She decided that she should follow, otherwise, their last conversation may go down like last night.

"I have to do better. If he's an expert like Ryder.. What else would he think of me? Something the same with Marshall's opinion, that's for sure."

Right now, she decided to work on herself better; polishing her skills and hope to impress everyone, especially Marshall. In hope that he'll change how he sees her — not some kind of pest, and if she can manage to do that, maybe he can pass his positive opinion onto everyone, and she'll be accepted!

"Alright, ready?" A male voice questions, which caught her attention and had snapped herself out of her trance.

Nodding eagerly, determined to prove Marshall wrong of what she's capable to do, the truck engine and a few other vehicles revved up to life. All heading forth the town proper.

Arriving fashionably early, they were be held by Mayor Goodway who's discussing the tasks to the two canines.

Rocky seemed quite locked on attention to her, trying to thoroughly understand what she wanted, and Rubble seemed to listening to her as he unloads an array of plastic garbage bags — that'll be used to store the junk they've picked up during their clean-up.

"Have you called Ryder?" Marshall began, as soon as the town hall pulled up and turned off the engine's power.

Rubble nodded in affirmation that the PAW Patrol's in action without him and wished them safe during the operation.

"Mayor Goodway's mentioned your tasks, and that is picking up flown away things from trees and trash-picking. Skye will shortly scout the bay, in case there are any citizens washed away—" He took a brief pause as he looks at the Chocolate Lab who approached them.

"—And Zuma will clean-up the bay, while Everest can help by picking up the trash." Then the English Bulldog finishes off the listing by saying that he's on duty similar to Everest, and Rocky's on repair duty.

Questioning once more for any more clarifications, once they were set, they sprung into action and began their tedious, but maybe rewarding job.

As the Dally hops into his truck and began to drive around the area with his truck, Everest began to focus on the town hall, which still was littered with the debris of the storm's aftermath.

Upon facing the rest of the area, she realized that it may or may not eat most of her time. "This isn't good on my resume."

»»——⍟——««

Finally finishing the town hall's front yard — from plucking away rubbish from the Mayor's flower boxes, picking up twigs, branches and sweeping away the leaves into a bin, she finally was ready to move on to the next area.

Looking up from her completed area, she found that no one's here anymore. She could hear their vehicles far away; she hypothesized that they've finished early with the area they were handling.

"Dammit. I was too slow." She cursed underneath her breath as she began to become serious with her task.

Quickly tying the already full garbage bag and tossing it to the rest of the garbage, she picked a fresh one and ran towards somewhere they haven't covered up yet.

To her fortune, it was an area close to Marshall "This is my time to show him!" She thought to herself, as she speedily picked up the trash laying in the ground.

Occasionally, she'd steal a glance in hope that the Dally was paying attention to her. She hated the idea that he won't witness her amazing skills and not report this to Ryder.

As if the skies were listening to her, one time during cleaning the area half-way, Marshall noticed her and was watching her. Although, she was unsure if he was looking at her with amusement or hatred.

"Show off.." She managed to read off of his thoughts by reading his lips. She huffed in irritation as she angrily knots the already full bag.

Angrily storming off, she muttered a few words of disbelief to Marshall — without his knowledge though, of course. "How could he say that?! I am trying my best to be the best I can be. Can't he see that?!"

Clearly irked by Marshall's hasty and offending remark, she managed to trip herself with her own paws and crashed — not violently though — to the ground.

Of course, the Dalmatian noticed this and began to laugh at her. Him laughing just feeds itself into the Husky's fire of fury, and she was without a doubt, infuriated with him. Although on the side, was quite disappointed she can never redeem herself with this.

She just created herself a new title known to the PAW Patrol — a nuisance — and now a clumsy Husky.

"Come on. Get up." To her surprise, Marshall was in front of her, offering her his paw to stand up. Her mind flurried with responses she could take.

She thought of accepting it and stand up and continue, but half of her was still salty about the recent embarrassing event — that she wants to not take it and just walk away like a boss.

Because she decided to not look like a weakling, she stood up and brushed herself from the dust that's enlaced onto her fur.

"Thanks, but no thanks. I don't need your help." She barks at him, avoiding his gaze in utter embarrassment and anger [still].

Rolling his eyes, he walked back to his truck to climb up on his ladder to pick the last few bits of debris off of the plant.

"Y'know, if you're going to show-off, you should be careful." Her face heated more in humiliation when she found out that he most certainly knew about her motives.

          "H-how did you—?"

          "Lucky guess."

Remaining silent at his clap-back, she then took note of his words and decided to be more careful if she wants him to see her less of a nuisance.

In her opinion though, it seemed that he was becoming to think of her less of being a waste of space, only if she just hadn't fallen onto her face, maybe he would've had a better judgement about her.

Shrugging off those and putting her mindset back to what she had originally planned, she made a dash forth the town hall to drop off the newly filled garbage bag for a new and empty one.

»»——⍟——««

The day began to set, and Adventure Bay's at least forty percent cleaner than before. The group couldn't cover the whole town area, but nevertheless were they proud of what they have accomplished today.

Ryder had met up with everyone at the town hall so they all could go home altogether. In the meantime though, Ryder and the Mayor were exchanging words before leaving.

Everyone else — the pups (but they aren't really pups in the story, they're technically adult dogs but i dislike calling them that so—), were bringing their other equipment to the town hall temporarily until needed, which will be tomorrow.

They too, tossed the last bags of trash into the pile and had planned to bring them altogether when all of the trash has been fully gathered.

Everest, somewhere nearby one of the flower boxes that Mayor Goodway's set up, was standing there with a weary smile plastered upon her face.

She was gazing upon the brightly painted petals of tulips. Without a doubt was she tired, though somehow.. She's smiling with satisfaction at the thought she'd only choked once today; and throughout the twelve hours (more or less) she have spent here at Adventure Bay, she did well.

Giving herself some credit and a pat on the back, Marshall, from behind her, passed by her.

In reality, you can't feel him pass by, but it seems that the gust of wind he brings around him just managed to capture her attention.

As they met each other's gaze, they were caught in such situation that it was awkward. They both looked upon their paws, the grass, skies, the sun..

Nobody couldn't manage to walk away from the scene nor speak a single phrase. The Husky was too afraid that if she says a single thing, he may burst into something that she fears and that all the tedious efforts she built today.. Would just end up to waste.

The atmosphere between them began to tense, and it neither was it comforting to both sides.

Rubbing his nape, his mouth opened agape and says "You did well, I guess.. " He trails off.

"Except for the tripping part." Usually, this was weighted with irk or disgust, but his smile emphasized enough that he seemed to find her less.. Annoying.

"Thank you.." She replies in awe, as Marshall walked away to his fire truck. The Husky leapt in the air and did a little victory dance that he's not showing any hostility towards her anymore.

As she smiles to herself, she looked upon the skies that's starting to darken. Stars began to appear among the pastel painted atmosphere.

Zuma began to call her name to hop on his hovercraft.

She thought to herself.. Is this the start of something new? Before she ran towards Zuma, who would chaperone her back to the look-out.
